Who: Rhyus

When Ssacarirhyuss heard footsteps coming towards his blue colored moss bed, he immediately raised his head to see who was coming. The snake-ling's first thought was either Mother or the Food Lady. When he saw it was the Food Lady, the colorful little snake nudged his sister Nafarye in head with his snout and slithered quickly to the edge of the circular bed. Rhyus knew if he was the first one to the edge. He would get the best opportunity to get a fat mouse for breakfast. Lifting up his head, the snake-ling flicked his tongue to smell the scent in the air and smelled another familiar scent his mother. When he recognized the smell of the his mother, the young viper lifted his head higher and did a happy dance for the dark haired and paled skinned woman. The dance consisted of a combination between swinging his head from side to side and eventually bobbing his head back and forth. It wasn't much of a dance, but did his best for his mother. During his little dance, the rest of his clutch slithered over to side of the bed to get a look at their mother. Rhyus was the only male in a clutch of six, so he wasn't as important as his sisters to the grand scheme of Zinrah, but he did his best to stand out to his mother.

Ssacarirhyuss kept up with his dance until his mother tapped him on the top head with pale finger. Proud of himself, he looked at Nafarye and nudge her with his snout and said in snake tongue, “Momma touched me first! I am the winner!”

Nafarye turned her black head to Rhyus, flicked him the side of his head with her tongue, and responded, “No you're not if I was a awake! You would be the loser!”

Rhyus heard the rest of his sisters trying to get the attention of there mother, but she was to busy talking to the Food Lady. Rhyus looked at his sister, flicked her in the head with his tongue to get her attention, and said quietly to her, “Wanna try to hear what Momma saying to Food Lady?”

Nafarye shook head sheepishly and said quietly to him, “No I can wait..”

Rhyus wasn't surprised that his sister hesitated when he was about to do something that can get him in trouble. She wasn't the bravest snake-ling in the basket, but he wasn't going to pressure his sister into doing something foolish. Rhyus slithered to the edge of the bed, looked up, and saw the circular moss bed was about a foot tall. Lifting up the front of his body, the young snake-ling strained to reach the highest part of the best. He could feel the muscles in his back start to burn when he finally rested his head on the edge. Looking back at his siblings, Rhyus saw that they were all staring at him in shock. He flicked his tongue at them in amusement and started to stretch out his head to hear the conversation between the Food Lady and Mother better.

“Thanks to Nallis and the rest of you. My babies have grown big enough to hunt on their own, so I want to take them to the Training Gallery to train.”

Rhyus couldn't hear what the Food lady was saying, so he curled the lower half of his body into a tight coil and stretched out his head past the bed to hear them better. The Food Lady said with a look of concern on her face, “I will have to clear it with Nallis, but you need to keep track of them in the Training Gallery. You know how active it can be in there...”

Rhyus could feel his balance starting to falter, so he moved back slight and heard his mother said with a hint of annoyance in her voice, “It is night time, so everyone is working. I know how to take care of my children, Priestess...” The red haired woman gave her a flat look, and his mother sighed and said in more respectful tone, “I will wait patiently for Nallis' OK.”

The Food Lady nodded to her and said softly, “Thank you for your understanding, Nematavernuss.”

When the Food Lady started to walk away, Rhyus started to pull back as his mother turned to look at him. The viper woman shook her head, laughed a her adventurous snake-ling, walked over, and helped him back into the moss bed, and said to him with a smile, “The nurse was warning me about you, Rhyus. I do need to keep a eye on you Little One.” Looking over at the rest of her clutch, Mother said to them with a smile, “When the nurse give me the OK, I am going to take you all to Training Gallery. Are you excited my babies?” All the females started to talk at once at their mother, and Rhyus started to do his happy dance since she wouldn't able to hear over the excited females."

When the girls started to quiet down, Rhyus asked with excitement in his voice, “If I see a mouse, I am going to kill it for you, Momma!”

Nematavernuss looked at her son and said with wide smile, “Aren't you the mighty hunter, Ssacariryhuss? You going to make one lucky female a happy mate one day...”

Suddenly Rhyus upper body went stiff, and he hissed back her in disgust, “What? Gross Mom! Females are icky!” Suddenly, Nafarye flicked the side of his head with her tongue, and he spun around at her and hissed loudly at his sister, “Nafarye! Stop it! See they are ICKY!”

My First Kill!

Hearing his mother laugh, his mother tapped both Nafarye and Rhyus on the head. When his mother decided to turn her attention to his other four sisters, Rhyus laid his head on the cushion mat and sulked because he wasn't the center of her attention. Nafarye decided to curl up next to him as they waited for the Food Lady to come back with her boss' answer. To the snake-ling, ten chimes seemed like forever, but the Dhani woman said with a smile, “Nalliss ssaid you can take them to the Training Gallery, but be aware that there have been ssightingss of large salamanders in the hallways leading up to Gallery, so you need to be on you best guard, Nematavernusss.”

Rhyus heard his mother say simply, “You have no fear, Narrasss. These sssnake-lings are the last thing my late beloved left me. I will be damned if I let a ssslimy sssalamander eat one of them...”

“I am still sorry about losing Rhyuss last year. How are you holding up?”

“You worry to much, Narrassss, but I am fine, but thank you for assking.”

As he laid on the cushion, Rhyus was surprised that he heard his name, but he remembered his mother told him that he was named after his late father. His mother didn't him about his father's death, but she told him that he died bravely against the savage Myrian horde. Unlike his mother who was a career hunter. His father Rhyus was a guard. She told her clutch that she met him when he escorted her hunting party east through the jungle to the banks of the great river Savkhan. Rhyus lifted his head up when he heard the word Salamander. The rest of snake-lings constrictor, rattlers, and vipers know of the dangers these beasts can be to snake-lings. Often the snake-lings would tell scary stories of salamanders sneaking into the nursery at night and eating whole clutches. It was totally ridiculous notion because a priestess was always around to keep them safe, but it was still fun listening and telling the horror stories. Rhyus looked over and saw his sister hiding her head in her coil. The viper knew Nafarye never saw a salamander before, but she was still terrified of them.

Rhyus put his head next to her and hissed in snake tongue, “You know Momma and I will be here to protect you. You have nothing to fear.”

Rhyus watched his sister and heard her muffled reply through her coil, “You can go. I am sstaying here. It ssafer and warmer than the dirty cavesss...”

The colorful male said to his sister, “You need to learn how to hunt. The Food Lady won't feed you forever...” When his sister said nothing, Rhyus looked up at his mother and said softly, “Nafarye is terrified of Ssalamanderss, Mom. Sshe wants to sstay here.”

Immediately, his mother looked at her curled up daughter and gave the snake-ling a sympathetic smile. Reaching down with her human hands, she picked up her daughter in both her hands and lifted her into the air. Rhyus watch his mother consul her daughter, and eventually, she allowed his sister to wrap around her shoulder for the trip down to the training gallery. Once his sister was secured around his mother neck, she helped the rest of his sisters out of her cushioned bed and onto the floor. Rhyus was last to picked up and placed on the floor. When the viper clutch was ready to go, his mother started to walk to the door and her children followed close behind her.
