Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Riverfall is a maze of a city, and it can be head ache inducing for those who aren't used to being in a big city. Zephari has been in Riverfall for just over a week and is feeling that head ache. She has gone through the process of getting a home, a job, and a general feel for the city. It has been a massive shift from her home in Eyktol. Zephari has traveled from place to place, not staying for long in each place, for her entire life. All of those places have been pretty much the same, desolate sandy desert, with the occasion city in which she visited. Riverfall on the other hand is vibrant and chaotic in comparison, at least in Zephari's mind.

Waking up to the smell of the sea, Zephari panics slightly, but then remembers where she is. "By Yahals mercy that is a strange way to get up in the morning.", Zephari says as she rubbed the sleepiness from her eyes. She looks over at her side table, which has a calender on it. "Too bad I don't have work today...". Zephari has been thoroughly enjoying work in the mine's finding it simple and calming. The city life on the other hand is significantly harder. She has greatly enjoyed meeting new people and seeing all the new cultural aspects of the city, yet adjusting to the actual city part has been rather stressful. After getting out of bed and getting cleaned up, Zephari decides it time to get out of the city and go out and explore. She grabs her cloak and pick, then heads out for the city gates, leading to the sea of grass. Upon ariving at the main gate, she is stopped my an Akalak guard. "What is it?" Zephari says looking up at him, sounding slightly indignant. The guard simply says with a straight face; "Just a warning to you that the gates close at night, and night outside the city can be rather dangerous." Zephari smiles and quickly replies; "I can take care of myself even if I get caught outside at night!". She then goes outside the gate and boards one of the ferries. Once across the river, Zephari immediately cuts off of the main road onto a game trail, and follows it for a while, almost running. Her heart pumps with adrenaline as she regains that feeling of freedom she has been used to her entire life. She quickly tires after about 100 meters, having little experience in running or sprinting. She flops down into the grass and sighs happily. "This grass is almost as soft as the sand back home....". Zephari mouths a few words of thanks to Yahal for the soft grass and clean air. After lying down for about 15 minutes she stands up, looking around. "Now lets see what kind of hidden places we can find here..." she says, heading towards the top of a small ridge.

And so starts a day of exploration outside Riverfall.

Feeling Cooped Up [Shahar]

Adjusting. That was the word to best describe the turn Shahar’s life had took since the beginning of summer. Adjustments to new changes and people and animals, to traveling and settling and to the towering stone thing that was the city of Riverfall. Khida and Naiya, they took to the cobbled streets curiously now and then, but Shahar was more than content to remain as he was: outside. Stone didn’t move, stone didn’t breathe like the cloth walls of a tent. It was too easy to suffocate surrounded by unbreathing stones. He didn’t trust any place where he couldn’t see the horizon.

There were the good adjustments, too; while Naiya’s proposal hadn’t been unexpected, per se, there had always been the underlying knowledge that to join with her would bring a new set of changes. What he hadn’t known, however, was just how wide those changes would reach.

Physically sharing a tent would take some getting used to, although it wasn’t as unpleasant as it was simply unfamiliar; he had shared with Khida on occasion, although she usually preferred to sleep in feathers and her human-nights were few and far between. Naiya was Drykas, and Naiya was human; she lay down her head and slept and covered herself with blankets like Shahar did, and the sharing of his sleeping space was only just beginning to sink into his bones as something regular. With that feeling came something… pleasant. Shahar liked sleeping so near to her.

What he didn’t like, however, were wandering zibri.

The younger one, Irna, she had made her way away from comp sometime during the morning, while none of the Danwhispers had been paying attention. As the hunter of the group, the task had naturally fallen to Shahar to find her and bring her back. Although she displayed a basic understanding of Pavi and Sign, Irna was the least predictable of the herd, and so Shahar had brought along some rope just in case.

He was accompanied by his Strider and attended by his hunting cat, both of whom seemed to have surmised the situation and were as bemused by it as Shahar was. None of them had much experience with zibri, but they couldn’t write it off to buy themselves time; they had to learn on the job if they were to retain their animals, and keeping their animals inside the camp was a good start.

As quarry, Irna was not at all difficult to follow. The thick brush of Riverfall’s neighboring fields was helpful, with a wider range of things to give signs of passage. That, added to the fact that Irna was large, lumbering zibri made her recent trail stunningly easy to follow. Tuka’s determined sniffing of the ground helped, too.

He would find that cow within minutes, for certain.

Feeling Cooped Up [Shahar]

Postby Zephari on May 5th, 2015, 4:40 pm

Walking out in the open brought back memories. Being able to walk in one direction for more than 100 feet without running into a building felt great. In the deserts Eyktol you could walk for days and not see a single sign of civilization, or even anyone at all. The feeling of real freedom settled back into Zephari after walking for just over a mile. Her thoughts eventually wandered to the question of why. Why had she decided to move to somewhere so radically different than what she knew? At the begining of the previous year she had been working among a caravan of metalworking traders, which had been a stable and happy living. But she wasn't content with it. She wanted more, something different. With little to no warning she had packed up her things and set out for the nearest port city. It had almost been as if something had called her away. Was something calling to her? She didn't know, but Zephari knew she had made a good decision to travel, as hard as it has been. "Yahal, give me the strength to keep moving." Zephari said, letting out a deep breath she'd been holding, deep in thought.

Reaching the end of the small ridge, Zephari looked out towards a small rocky outcropping in the middle of a lowland grass patch. "Well now that looks promissing." she thought, walking down the hill towards it. The land here is so different she couldn't recognize any of the rocks or sand types, so this was a new and slightly intimidating place. As she came closer to the outcropping, she noticed a large juniper-esque bush, that gave off a long shadow. It was a a rather warm day so she decided to take shelter from the sun for a few minutes. After sitting down her thoughts drifted back to the question of why. "I hope I can figure out what I am looking for, because wandering around just isn't working anymore..." She said with a slightly bit of sadness.

Then the sound of branches being crushed behind her tore her away from her thoughts, her muscles tightening with adrenaline. She slowly turns, ready to either run or fight, then relaxes seeing that it is simply a zibri. "Goodness the scared the the crap out of me!" she said, exasperated. As her heart rate slowed back down to normal, she slowly walked backwards away from the animal, still cautious of it. While it was obviously a herbivore it could still be dangerous purely based on its size. Zephari then realized that it looked much like the oxen of her homeland, so it was most likely a herd animal, owned by someone. She looked back towards Riverfall which was a good distance away. "You must be a long way from home bud" she said, assuming this was a stray from one of Riverfall's herds. The animal just stood there, munching on some of the bush's rough leaves, staring at Zephari. She sat down on on a rock, examining the animal. Never before had she seen an ox or cow this woolly. "Perhaps the winters here are much worse than back home?" Zephari said. She then smacked her forehead, making it sting slightly. "I can't believe I am so lost and lonely I'm talking to a cow...." said with annoyance. She scolded herself for doing something so silly. After rubbing her eyes Zephari stood up on top of a waist high rock, looking for any other animals in the area, or maybe people who may own it.

"Well a cow is better than nothing, but you probably belong to someone."

When Tuka found the recent scent, she stopped and looked at Shahar tensely, ears pricked forward. Shahar was immediately proud that she had stopped and waited for his signal instead of rushing off, and his posture said so. Good girl, he said. Go find, lead us there.

Tuka wheeled without a second thought and plunged after the zibri. Akaidras needed little urging to follow.

Tuka was not stretching to full speed, and so the Drykas and Strider were forced to keep to a slow half-canter to remain apace without overshooting her. She was determined in her search, and even from his vantage point Shahar could see the signs of Ira’s passage; chewed branches, lingering hair, the almost-tunnel through the brush that remained in her wake. They were getting close.

Then, suddenly, Tuka halted. Akaidras snorted in irritated surprise and ground to a halt to avoid her, while Shahar tossed off a quick what is it something wrong? The she-cat had barely taken notice of the horse’s annoyance, and was instead focusing on something else closer to the ground. Shahar gave Akaidras a steadying pat on the neck and dismounted to take a closer look.

There was a new trail, one that overlapped and crossed Irna’s, only much smaller. Its impact was less, and Shahar narrowed his eyes to measure strides through the grass. There, there, there… no, this wasn’t a regular animal. The indentations were long and narrow, and there were only two feet involved. A human, then, or something similar. He walked alongside them for a few paces, comparing the steps to his own. They were much shorter strides, and the indentations of his own feet were noticeably larger. Female, then, or a young adolescent; certainly not an Akalak, in any case.

Her trail was layered over Irna’s, although they appeared to be heading in the same general direction. The zibri had come by first, and then the woman, although both were too recent for him to really gauge the time difference. It could have been minutes, it could have been seconds; he didn’t know.

Intent carved the shape of his shoulders as he returned to his horse and hunting partner; both prepared to move even before he’d reached them. He swung into the yvas and signaled for Tuka to follow; he was close enough to follow Irna by sight. A quick tap to the sides brought Akaidras to a brisk trot, and within minutes they had crested the end of a small ridge and broken free of the thick Riverfall brush. Immediately Shahar spotted the large, lumbering form of Irna, and a moment later he noticed the lean shape of a person, both near a jagged outcropping of rock.

Keep close, Shahar said to Tuka. Be wary, only what I tell you.

Shahar urged Akaidras down the ridge, making no attempt to hide his approach. Greeting was on his hands, although he had little hope that she actually knew Pavi, much less Grassland Sign. Nevertheless, he kept his hands away from his axe, javelins and rope, lacing them through Akaidras’ mane in an attempt to avoid any appearance of intending to harm the woman, for it was indeed a woman. Dark-skinned, dark-haired, with an oddly arid cut to her cloth; was she native to Riverfall, or a foreigner?

It didn’t matter.

Raising a hand in the air in greeting, palm outward, Shahar halted Akaidras. He didn’t know her languages, and he didn’t want to bother questioning and deducing; with little mind for idle talk, Shahar simply pointed to himself, then to the zibri cow.

Feeling Cooped Up [Shahar]

Postby Zephari on May 6th, 2015, 5:11 am

Standing on top of the rock, Zephari looked around for any signs of people or animal for several minutes. After having no luck, her eyes drifted to the stone monolith in the distance; Riverfall. Having never looked upon the city from out outside, Zephari had not realized just how imposing it looked. The massive stone walls and towers stood out far above the rest of the land, looking almost as if some titanic race had just come along and dropped the city in place. "No wonder I felt out of place in there" she thought, remembering the stressful morning. Zephari jumped off of the rock back down to the cow. After a minute or so of awkward silence Zephari grabs a handful of tall grass from next to the rock outcropping. She then slowly walked towards the animal, holding out the handful of grass to it. As she almost reaches close enough to touch it, the cow gobbles down the grass, causing Zephari to flinch away from its quick movement.

Now knowing that it is for sure just a hungry cattle animal, Zephari relaxes. "Well at least I don't think your gonna try to eat me!" she said with a slightly sarcastic laugh. Leaving the cow to munch on the grass Zephari searches around the outcrop, looking for any interesting rocks or minerals. taking her pick ax she chipped away at some of the larger boulders, trying to get under the surface of the stone. After four or five swings she reveals some small quartz crystals. "Ah finally something I recognize!" she yelped happily. Smokey Quartz was the first crystal she'd found as a young child, so it held a special place in her heart. It take just a few seconds to extract the crystal. Its nothing special, just a cloudy grey and white crystal about the size of her thumb. Once she exacted the crystal, two small green Agate crystals fell out of the rock, tumbling to the ground. Knowing Agate wasn't all that interesting but was valuable, she pocketed those and returned her attention to the quartz.

As soon as she gets a chance to examine the stone in her palm, a man riding a brown horse approaches startling Zephari. Quickly putting the gem down on the boulder she reached for her pick. Gripping her pick in cautious adrenaline, Zephari waved at the man as he came close. He was making some kind of hand sign. "Possibly some type of greeting around here?" Zephari thought, trying to recall if she had ever seen it before. The man then stopped, pointed at the cow and then himself. It took a couple seconds to register in her head that he was saying this was his animal. "Oh so this guy is yours then? I was wondering if someone would come looking for it." said with a friendly tone. He finger tips started to go slightly numb, making her realize she had been tightly gripping her pick the entire time. Zephari quickly tried to put it on her belt, but instead dropping it thanks to her numbed fingers. Looking up, cheeks slightly red with embarrassment, she asked; "So this one a runaway?".

The woman was considerably startled by Shahar’s appearance, setting down whatever she had been holding to reach for her pick––a decidedly defensive gesture, one that had Shahar think briefly on what he must have looked like to her. Tuka became taut at his side, and he tossed off a quick stay, be calm to keep the cat in place. He did not believe the woman to be a dire threat, but neither did he want to frighten her into something dangerous for both of them. This was the Sea of Grass, after all, and so he lifted both hands and showed them to her, palms facing out, to prove he had no weapon in hand. Beyond that, however, he did not feel the need to reassure her and deeper.

She seemed to understand his gesture, letting loose a warm, friendly string of Common words that came too fast and fluent for Shahar to understand. He watched her blankly as she began to fumble with her pick, dropped it, then looking up with reddened cheeks. Again she spoke, and again the words flew over Shahar’s head; he continued to observe her motions as she spoke and gauge her body language. She seemed somewhat tense, although not aggressively so; in the case of an escalation, she seemed far more likely to evacuate than to confront.

“No common,” Shahar rasped when she finished. It seemed more effective to simply avoid the ground of language altogether than to try and gesture for her to speak slower and more clearly, at least for the moment; he wasn’t here to negotiate with her or learn from her, he was here to bring back his zibri.

To that end, Shahar rose from the yvas and swung one leg over his strider’s back, landing lightly on the ground. Tuka’s ears pricked, and she looked his way; she, too, had decided that the strange woman’s tension was not aggressive, and had decided to relax instead of remain cautious. Shahar tapped stay here on Akaidras’ shoulder and retrieved the coil of rope from the yvas-bags, turning towards the zibri with intent on his shoulders. He hoped the rope wouldn’t be necessary to get the animal back home, but it never hurt to be prepared.

Feeling Cooped Up [Shahar]

Postby Zephari on May 14th, 2015, 4:42 am

The man looked confused, but not alarmed by her fumbling with the pick ax. Addressing him did not provide any response from the man on the horse, her words seemingly lost on him. Does he not speak?. The man raised both of his hands in the universal gesture of being unarmed. Zephari now able to mostly relax, thought still ready to move quickly if needed.

"No common" said the man in a friendly but monotone voice. Realizing that its not that he can't speak, but simply doesn't understand her language, Zephari tried to focus more on her appearance rather than what she was saying. She sagged her shoulders, letting all tension leave them. Hoping to find out about the cow, she strafed sideways, over to an angle wear she was away from the animal and the man, but still between both of them in a triangle formation. Stick to basic movements... She pointed at the man, then nodded her head at the cow.

Getting off his horse, tapping the horse as he did so, he grabbed a rope and walked toward the cow. So it is yours. Grabbing a handful of grass and slowly walk over to the animal, Zephari tried to lure the cow closer to the man, so that he could more easily get the rope around its head. I hope he takes this as a good intention. She kept a smile the entire time while approaching the animal, the handful of grass held out. Upon the animal munching on the grass Zephari asked, very slowly, while also making a talking movement with her other hand; "This one escaped?". Hoping he would understand, she showed the friendliest smile she could muster, as now that she was close enough to examine the guy, she realized he hugely outclassed her physically.

OOC NoteYes I did steal the italicized colored thing for writing my characters thoughts from you. I got tired of saying it as "Zephari thought". I wrote this one while being a little tired, so there are probably a couple mistakes, and that's my excuse.

As he had hoped for, Shahar’s blunt denial of the Common language had thoroughly discouraged her from continuing it. The tawny woman fell silent, and after a moment of contemplation seemed to decide that focusing her energy on wordless gestures would be more productive; she let her shoulders drop, presumably to convey relaxation, then strafed to the side to complete the third point of a triangle that involved Shahar, herself and Irna. The zibri arced her head back and forth, unsure what to make of the two of them or of what they were doing.

Shahar, however, didn’t particularly need to know what the woman was doing, and he did need to get Irna home. He spread his burdened hands in peace, greeting, intent come closer and took a few short steps Irna’s way––but paused in puzzlement when the woman began to make her own move at the beast. No, not immediately; first the woman tore up a handful of grass and held it out, moving towards Irna nonthreateningly. Irna, never one to turn down offered food, closed the distance and took a share of it unhurriedly. Shahar tilted his head. Was the woman trying to help him?

That was a puzzle he could figure out once he had the rope around her neck.

Shahar stepped to the zibri’s shoulder and drew the rope in a loose loop around her shaggy neck. It wasn’t at all tight, because Shahar was fairly certain that Irna wouldn’t find enough motivating factors in the open Sea to actually escape it, and it was more of a reminder to her to follow that is was an actual leash. She was the first animal Shahar had dealt with that actually needed such a thing.

Occupied by the grass as she was, Irna put up no protest when he knotted the rope closed. He straightened and examined his work, which was satisfactory.

The woman was gesturing.

Shahar turned blankly to watch her as she gestured slowly as the cow, then spoke even more slowly in Common. ‘This one’ he understood, but her third word was completely foreign to him. She was quite obviously talking about Irna, although what exactly she had just said about her shahar’s couldn’t guess. She seemed to be taking pains to remain nonthreatening, though, as she took care to remain relaxed and pulled on a wide smile. What was she asking him? Did she expect him to respond? What was it she had said about Irna?

A moment of wondering, and Shahar realized that the answer wouldn’t change anything about their current situation.

“No common,” he grunted again.

Again he had grumbled that he spoke no common. The frustrated Zephari a little though she could see why. He was obviously not of the city, and was probably a wanderer by the look of his build.

At least he's not hostile at all. Most likely he just wants to get his animal back to his herd, or whatever he has. Hopefully there isn't any more of them around here to sneak up on me. As the strange man began to turn back to his horse, Zephari gave the slowly curved wave, thinking this was a universal way of saying goodbye.

After watching the man pull the zibri back towards his horse, Zephari returned to the boulder, and collected an additional two crystals that she noticed in the pocket she had mined out. They were the same type of agate, light green, but also had iridescent blue streaks that shined brightly in the sunlight.

She tossed one of them up and down in her hand, watching the stone glimmer and send light spots all around her as it spun. I love ones like this, so beautiful. Can't sell them very well but I guess I'll just keep these. On one particular toss, the light caught the iridescent blue streak just perfectly, sending a streak of blue light towards the man on the horse.

oocI know this part sounds a little silly, but I did at one point blind myself by doing exactly this. I had a piece of red agate, which is sometimes highly reflective. I tossed it into the air, causing it to spin, catch the light perfectly then it blinded me for a few seconds. It was a very bright day.

This is the color of speech.
This is the color of thought.

His second denial of Common seemed to irritate her, although not to the point of becoming an actual threat––she seemed a bit disgruntled at his lack of communication, but Shahar didn’t pay it much mind. He had Irna now, and so he needed to return home or Naiya would have his hide.

He turned and began to make his way back to Akaidras, who had let his head drop to peruse halfheartedly through the spring grass. A quick click of his tongue and the horse looked up, spotted the Drykas and zibri and uncanted his forefoot. Tuka flicked her tail impatiently; this was a decidedly long trip for a decidedly boring prize. She had likely expected them to be hunting.

A movement out of the corner of his eye caused Shahar to glance back at the woman, and he discovered that she was slowly waving at him. Was she trying to communicate again? Perhaps… was she saying goodbye?

Unable and unwilling to decipher the gesture, Shahar simply made the same motion back at her and continued on to his horse.

The woman continued on to her own work.

Shahar reached Akaidras and signaled for for both strider, cat and zibri to prepare to move. He turned back to his meandering bovine to check the comfort of her makeshift leash, and in doing so spared a vaguely curious look at what the woman was doing.

He was rewarded with a flash in the eye.

Shahar yelped and dropped the rope, stumbling back in stunned pain as the sun reflected from the surface of the woman’s agate and into his face. He clamped his eyes shut and covered them with a hand, rubbing the lids in a useless attempt to clear away the swirling green and purple lights inside them. What magic was this?
