Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Early Morning

Aoren bounced back and forth on the balls of his feet regarding the training dummy in front of him. The training that he had been participating in with Zehklan had shown him just how unpracticed he was when it came to martial prowess. Aoren was not a man who sought conflict but it seemed that conflict was making itself more prominent in his life. He did not shy away from such a thing but it brought him a measure of sadness. Nevertheless, it was better to live prepared than it was to hide away from a world that was harsh and mildly unforgiving.

Breathing steadily, the Drykas found the isle of calm that rest at the center of his being despite that thoughts that crashed through his head. He was familiar with the basics of his hand to hand fighting style. It was time that he ventured forward in search of his own techniques. Striking out, Aoren brought his first forward to jab at one of the training dummy arms. As he did so, his other hand came out to block the oncoming strike of his inanimate enemy. The Seer jut his palm upward pressing it into the wood feeling the kickback of its immovability. He would be sore, his hands would likely be raw by the time he was finished with this particular training session but he would be stronger for it.

This training would be different however. Reaching inside of himself, Aoren opened himself up to the awareness that lingered on the edge of his mind. He dove into the ebb and flow of himself taking a moment to focus the djed Flux within his arms. The magic was clumsy in his mental grasp. It felt heavy and barely compliant to his wishes but with focus he was able to push the flow into the muscles of his arms. Keeping hold of that energy, Aoren struck out again with an upward jab to the center of the training dummy. In his mind’s eye he envisioned the flat of his palm coming to slam against the chest of an exposed opponent. The intent behind the force of the impact was to off balance the opponent. Whether or not it would ever be a successful strike, Aoren hoped he wouldn’t have to find out. He might have been training himself to be a formidable opponent in the heat of conflict but Aoren considered himself a man of peace.

It was a curious thing to think about as he released the hold on the energy within his arms. The muscles felt heavier as a result of his exertion. The control he maintained over the Flux was still sluggish at best. Still, he knew that the only way he was going to become more familiar with how it worked, how it flowed through his body, was to use it. The magic appealed to Aoren not just because of the fact that it could enhance his physical strength, speed and reflexes but because it called to him about discipline. It resonated with him with notions of balance and familiarity with himself. For years, Aoren had felt a stranger in his own skin. Since coming to Riverfall, much of that had faded away. The Flux would only reinforce that.

Aoren adjusted his position to face the training dummy from the left. He angled his body so that he was less of a target. The less of himself that was exposed, the more difficult it would become for his opponent to hit him. It helped that he tended to keep moving. Aoren had learned long ago that the quickest way to reach the end of a fight was to be the one that remained still. He hoped that the constant movement would also help to make his moves less predictable. The Seer wasn’t foolish enough to believe that a practiced fighter would be blind to his intentions but he could hope.

He again dove into the river of energy that existed within himself. This time he compelled the strength of his body to flow downward into his right leg. What he envisioned was the rushing current of energy rippling over his leg. As he brought his leg up in a side-swiping kick, Aoren concentrated on the idea of that motion giving speed to his leg. He felt the flow of energy pulse within the leg. Whether or not that was a true result of his movement speed increasing, Aoren couldn’t be sure. Given his very rudimentary control over the powers of the Flux, the most he could do was manipulate and watch events unfold. Sometimes the results were quite visible, others were not so much. As his shin impacted the wood he winced striking it perhaps a bit harder than he had intended.

Control, Aoren. Remain focused and disciplined.

Aoren stepped back from the training dummy allowing the flow of energy within his body to fall back into its normal state. A shiver went up his spine as he felt the power that pulsed through him align itself properly once more. He looked down at his hands studying them intently. It was strange to possess even the smallest level of conscious awareness of his whole body. It was not what he would call direct awareness. He simply felt more…himself. He was beginning to have a finer understanding of how the djed within his body spurred into motion. The idea of it had always been there but to actually witness it, to feel it, to be able to tap into it, the experience awoke a resolve in Aoren that had simmered and now burned brightly.

Switching the angle of his body, Aoren moved to approach the training dummy from his right side. He was not as well balanced when it came to fighting with the left side of his body. Being naturally right handed it only felt normal to approach a situation from the left and strike out with his right fist or leg.

Adjusting the balance at his center of gravity, Aoren took a step back preparing to swing his left leg upward. Before his foot even left the ground however, something felt off about the approach. He ceased moving considering how he was going to go about getting more familiar with using his left appendages in a combat situation.

Alright. Can’t be too hard. Just think it through.

Planting his feet, Aoren brought up his left arm extending it outward in a slow jab. He repeated the motion getting the feel for it with his non-dominant hand. He went through the slow motion of performing an uppercut followed by a slow sweeping kick meant to knock his opponent off of their feet. Aoren ran through the motions several times over repeating them with slow diligence. The more he became practiced at executing a particular maneuver without having to think about it, the more rapidly he could perform it in the heat of the moment. When he felt comfortable that he could at least strike out with his left side without teetering on his own two feet, Aoren took up his stance in front of the training dummy.

Bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet, Aoren struck out as rapidly as he could with his left fist. He followed through by angling his arm to deflect an imagined blow from one of the dummy arms then leaned back spinning on his right heel to deliver a roundhouse kick with his left leg. As he lowered his leg, Aoren felt mildly satisfied with the smooth follow-through of the maneuvers. He was still a little slower than he was used to but it was something that would improve with time and practice. Breathing deeply, the Drykas resumed his stance drawing forth as much focus as he could in preparation for his next maneuver.

Opening himself up to the greater awareness in his body, Aoren drew upon the Flux once again. He directed the energy to his left arm this time instead of his right. Striking out, the Drykas went through a series of punches completing a flurry of motion that flew by much more rapidly than his first attempt. The added speed brought on by the placement of energy within his left arm made for a marginal improvement but it was hardly noticeable as something Aoren couldn’t achieve on his own. With training and discipline he could match that speed using the natural strength of his body. He breathed evenly still keeping hold of the energy flow within himself.

Tilting his head slightly, instead of releasing the energy to allow it to dissipate Aoren redirected it to his left leg. He felt the resistance of the current within his body. Furrowing his brow he was determined to move beyond that although it was hardly an easy process. The effort took much of his concentration forcing him to stand rigid in front of the training dummy.

Keeping tight hold of the Flux energy building up inside of his left leg, Aoren brought his gaze to the dummy. He was beginning to work up a fine sweat from his exertions. The whole exercise certainly reminding him of training with the weights to be found in Gideon’s Glory. Focusing on his breathing instead of the growing pushback he was feeling in his leg, Aoren wanted to see just how long he could manage to keep control over the flow. The muscles in his jaw flexed as he fought to keep the current within his mental bindings before with as much quickness as he could muster, a speed that was made more devastating with the added enhancement of the Flux, he swung his leg forward slamming it into the center post of the dummy.

Aoren immediately released the hold over the Flux energy. It dissipated a bit more slowly than before. Instead of instantly snapping back to its natural flow, it lingered before falling away. The Drykas felt a slight throb in the muscles of his leg causing him to wince when the Flux finally faded. Deciding that had been enough training for the time being, Aoren rubbed at the back of his neck feeling the tense muscles that were bunched there. He sighed heavily turning on his heel to exit the training room. He made his way through the Within going to his room retrieving a fresh set of clothing.

With fresh clothes in hand he made his way to the bath chamber undressing then stepping into the warm water. A content sigh made its way out of his lips as he felt the warmth of the water seep into sore muscles. Holding his breath, Aoren submerged himself beneath the water letting it settle over his head for a moment or two before standing back up. He ran both hands through his hair rubbing away at the salt of dirt and sweat that had no doubt accumulated there.

As he set about cleaning himself, Aoren thought about the road that lay ahead. He was nearing the point where he felt he would be comfortable going before the Akalak officials of the city to begin his Kuvan trial. The Drykas had an idea of what the trial entailed but he wasn’t entirely certain. From what he gathered it was merely a test of his skills to see whether or not he could be a proficient defender of the city if the need ever arose. The idea of being a defender of the city brought his thoughts back to Syliras. The Knights of Sylir had always been a point of interest for the Drykas. At one point in time he had considered joining the Order as a squire. Had he taken that road however, he likely would have never crossed paths with Caelum again.

Probably be on my way to meet the Lord Knight or maybe even the Grand Master.

He laughed softly to himself trying to envision himself clad in plate armor wielding a sword. It was not the life that he was meant for but it was still something interesting to ponder.

Aoren rinsed the soap out of his hair wiping away the water from his eyes. He leaned back against the edge of the pool staring into the water. His thoughts drifted away from the Knighthood and what it was that he wanted to build in Riverfall. What kind of life did he want for himself in the city on the edge of the Sea of Grass? To answer that question he needed to know himself better. He needed to know what it was that he was motivated by on the most intimate level. Turning his gaze upward he studied the patterns on the ceiling. Closing his eyes, Aoren searched for the awareness that lingered on the edge of his consciousness. It was fleeting at first. It still took concentration to actually pull that awareness to the forefront of his mind.

However he did not seek to redirect the flow of energy within himself at that moment. Instead he simply dove into the djed Flux seeking to become more familiar with it. His brow twitched as his concentration doubled. It was both strange and exhilarating to peer into the depths of how he moved, how energy flowed within his body and how it was shaped. Gathering what pieces of himself he could, Aoren studied the ebb and flow of his djed. For as much as he tried to take a hold of, just as much slipped through his mental fingers. Much like the water that surrounded him, Aoren could not quite grasp it simply by exerting sheer force of will alone. He moved with the flow of the energy following it attempting not to truly demand it concentrate in one area or another but to flow faster.

He was met with very little success. Opening his eyes, Aoren withdrew from that part of himself returning his attention to the world around him. He finished rinsing the soap off of his body then stepped out of the water grabbing a cloth to dry himself off with. As he dressed himself to get ready to tackle what lay ahead for the day, he held his head a little higher than he had when he’d woken up that morning. Aoren was beginning to feel like he was making headway in the journey to discover who he was and what he wanted in the world. It was going to take a little more exploring of that he had no doubt but he was nearly there. He could feel it.

Tossing the cloth over his shoulder he made his way out of the bath. It was his turn to clean the stables that day. He was going to need the cloth again later.
