Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[Sanctuary] Iron Resolution

Late Afternoon

Just outside the walls of the Sanctuary, Aoren sat painting a Focus glyph upon his right palm. It was simple work. Around him sat several things. There was a jar of plain black paint that he was using to draw the glyphs upon his skin. Just within his reach was the iron quarterstaff that he had been practicing with as of late. His shirt sat atop the toes of his boots just next to that. Aoren drew quietly, his mind thinking through the steps of what he intended to practice that afternoon.

The shape of Glyphs came to him relatively easily after having spent years getting the hang of how to inscribe them on one surface or another. The task that he had in mind for his Glyphs that day were well suited for its most basic functions. The details of the Focus were filled in quickly at which point in time Aoren kept his palm upturned, exposed to the open air. He waited for the Focus to dry before taking up the brush in that hand beginning the work of tracing the outline of another Focus upon the palm of his left hand.

As soon as both Focus glyphs were complete, Aoren proceeded to construct proper Paths to guide the flow of energy he intended to push through his arms. The trail of runes was not overly complex in design being built to merely assist the energy in moving out of its natural position more smoothly. When both arms were complete the Drykas stood up shaking his arms to loosen the muscles there. He looked skyward watching the sun make its journey across the heavens. In just a few hours it would be nightfall. Reaching down he picked up the iron staff balancing the weight of it in his hands. The blunt weapon was a bit more aggressive than his traditional wooden quarterstaff. The principles of wielding it were the same. He merely needed to grow accustomed to manipulating the weight.

To that end, Aoren intended to direct pockets of strength into the muscles of his forearms that he might better handle the weight of the staff. He began simply by tipping one end of the staff downward rotating his wrist so that the staff spun lazily. He was diligent with his movements. His intention was not for speed at this point but for control. The better he knew how to gauge the shifting weight of the staff compared to what he was used to, the better he would be able to handle it. Aoren placed one across the other spinning the staff in a propeller like motion directly in front of him. He angled his body bringing the staff down in a sweeping motion with both hands stopping just short of hitting the dirt of the ground.

Time to test myself.

Opening up his mind, Aoren dove into the greater awareness of himself as he took hold of the djed Flux within his body. He grabbed a portion of it with his mind nudging the pieces that he could retain control over into the muscles of his forearms.

Breathing steadily, Aoren repeated the swing of his staff across the length of his body twisting his wrists to bring the iron quarterstaff into a spinning motion again. As he moved he directed the flow of the Flux within his body to reinforce the strength of his forearms. He found the sliding of the energy coursing through his muscles to be slightly easier to handle than his previous excursions into the Flux.

He released the grip on his staff continuing to hold it with just one hand. He rotated it with the wrist and fingers of his right hand alone furrowing his brow he felt the smooth surface of the iron slip slightly. Aoren allowed his hand to slide slightly as he adjusted his grip continuing the rotation of the staff. He had to admit that with the added reinforcement of the Flux energy to the muscles of his forearms it made manipulating the heavier weapon easier.

Aoren switched hands continuing the rotation even as he felt the energy built up within his forearm begin to push back against the control he exerted over it. When the pressure began to become troublesome, Aoren released his hold on the Flux energy. He planted the staff gripping it tightly with both hands before straightening his posture. His chest was rising and falling more rapidly. His heart was beating faster. There was an ache within his forearms from the exertion. Whether or not that was from the concentration of Flux within his arms or simply from manipulating the staff itself, he wasn’t entirely certain.

He looked down at his arms. The Glyphs that he’d painted upon the surface of his skin were in the process of fading. The black pain began to fall away as the purpose of the Glyph was expended. He had yet to uncover a means of making Glyphs that were of a more permanent nature even after use. It was an avenue of Glyphing that he would have to explore another time. He knelt down resting the staff upon the ground once more stretching out his right leg reaching down for his toes. He held the stretch until he felt the mild discomfort that told him he was stretching the muscles adequately. He switched legs in short order repeating the stretch then folded his right leg beneath him to get more comfortable. Methodically he rolled up his pant leg until his lower leg and the lower portion of his thigh were both exposed.

Taking up his brush, Aoren dipped it into the paint leaning down so that he could trace the outline of another Focus upon the surface of his leg. He resisted the urge to chuckle as the tickling sensation of the brush felt odd against his skin. He did not often draw Glyphs upon his lower extremities having never had a real reason to.

Dipping the brush into the paint once more, Aoren moved to trace a Focus over his shin. His control over the Flux was not so refined that he could comfortably redirect that much energy into the full length of his leg. It would be easier for him to simply concentrate the energy that flowed throughout the whole of it.

With Glyphs properly drawn upon his left leg, Aoren switched to the right repeating the trace of sigils upon the surface of his skin. If there was one thing he could be grateful for when it came to Glyphing, it was that the world magic didn’t change. The only thing that differed was how he directed the Glyphs to interact with the magic it was applied to. He had been making a habit of utilizing it more thoroughly to make his exploration of newer disciplines and even some of his experiments much easier.

The Glyphs were completed in short order. After letting them dry, Aoren lowered his pant legs then took up his staff. He walked a few steps away from where his materials rested bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet a few times to gauge his limberness. When he was satisfied that he was warmed up enough to give what he hand in mind a try, Aoren began swinging the staff. He brought it first in a downward motion across his body before hooking it around his waist catching it with one of his hands. He continued moving getting his legs into motion before taking a step forward with the staff still in motion. His grip faltered slightly but he was able to adjust it by catching the staff with the back of one hand then twist it into the grip of his other.

Aoren took another step. His grip on the spinning staff did not falter this time which gave him a little more confidence. He angled the staff perpendicular to his body planting it on the ground kicking forward with one leg. As soon as his leg began falling back down to the earth, Aoren picked up the staff continuing the exercise of motion. He opened himself up to the awareness lingering on the edges of his consciousness.

His djed Flux was brought to the forefront of his mind. Taking hold of the flow of energy within his body he redirected a stronger portion of it to both legs. The drain upon his djed was much higher than if he had simply pushed the control into a single of his extremities. He forced himself to breathe through his concentration thankful of the constant meditation he undertook to maintain focus.

Keeping himself moving, Aoren braced himself for what he was about to do. He exhaled planting the iron quarterstaff on the ground pushing down with his legs as he did. He gripped the shaft of the staff with both hands as he used his momentum to push himself into the air using the staff as an anchor. With the Flux lending a slight increase in the strength within the muscles of his legs, Aoren’s downward push was made that much more forceful. He found he didn’t have to exert as much strength to lift himself up. His concentration however was divided between balancing himself in the air and maintaining control over his body as the momentum carried him up and around the iron pole in his hands.

As Aoren arced around the staff he kept hold of the flow of energy within his legs. When his feet touched the ground he envisioned the Flux flowing more rapidly through his legs. The pushback against his hold on the flow was aggressive. He was pushing the limit of what he was capable of with what little familiarity he had over the magic. Still, he pressed onward rotating on both heels gripping the quarterstaff with both hands swinging it forcefully around his body. As soon as the maneuver was complete he ceased dominating the flow of energy within his body with his will. A shuddering weakness passed through him making Aoren’s knees buckle slightly. He extended his staff outward to catch himself as he stumbled.

The unexpected weakness caught him by surprise. The Drykas sorcerer grit his teeth as he leaned on his staff for momentary support. He could feel his natural energy falling back into place little by little. With it the shocking weariness began to fade. His heart was pounding in his ears. His breathing was deeper. He felt as if he’d run for at least a mile and a half despite having only pushed himself physically for a short period of time. On his own, the maneuvers he was attempting were mostly within his skill to do without the assistance of the Flux. What he was hoping to achieve was a finer balance of how to apply the power at his command into the manner it was intended.

Walking back over to where his materials rest, he set the staff upon the ground resuming a meditative pose that he might consider what he’d observed. The addition of the Glyphs had made the harnessing of his djed Flux a lot smoother. In spite of that, his control over the natural flow within his body was still rudimentary at best. The fact that he had been in constant motion while manipulating the flow of his own energy had certainly helped in visualizing where he wanted it to go and how he wanted to apply it. The addition of the Glyphs did not however make maintaining control over that energy easier. It simply made moving it less troublesome.

Aoren took up the paintbrush again. He dipped it into the paint bringing the bristles to touch down on his chest. He worked slowly this time. The Focus that he began to draw he took his time with. It was odd working at an angle where he was looking down his nose and craning his neck to ensure he was drawing it properly.

The Focus drawn at the center of his chest came into form slowly enough. When he finished it, Aoren moved to the palms of his hands. He painted with patient strokes content to let his body rest as he went about the almost meditative process of drawing the Glyphs. When the Focus sigils were completed on his palms, he moved to the tops of his feet carefully outlining a Focus on each. He let the paint dry upon completion then folded his legs beneath him resting the backs of his hands upon the tops of his knees.

Aoren closed his eyes concentrating on his breathing. He concentrated on regulating the amount of breaths he was taking. He listened to his heartbeat.

Breathing in he tapped into the awareness lingering on the edge of his consciousness. As he exhaled, Aoren dove into the river of his djed Flux. He followed the current not seeking to control but to become familiar with it. He climbed through the channels of energy feeling the way they interacted with the muscles in his body and even the bones beneath them. His brow twitched slightly as the drain upon his djed began to interfere with his concentration. Nevertheless, Aoren pressed forward.

With the assistance of the Glyphs painted on his body, Aoren found that the stream of energy within his body moved for him a little easier. He tugged at the strings of djed that connected the streams finding they slid away from their natural position with less force. Upon grasping them, Aoren thought on accelerating the energy. He nudged the Flux into motion but the kickback was like trying to move a boulder. Aoren’s brow furrowed as he tried to push past it to no avail. He released the hold he maintained on his djed stepping out of the flow of energy within his body. He opened his eyes squinting in the sunlight.

The world was a plane of white for a moment before his vision cleared. The Seer blinked a few times before the sounds of the world visited his ears. The Sea of Grass came into focus. He looked over his shoulder to see the walls of the Sanctuary rising. Looking down at his body, the Glyphs had faded but with them had Aoren’s desire to continue exploring the depths of Flux for that day. Reaching over, Aoren tugged on his boots rotating his ankles so that they rest comfortably on his feet. He picked up his materials tossing his shirt over his shoulder. With staff and materials in hand he made his way back to the Sanctuary.

His stomach grumbled bringing a smirk to his lips. He sighed chuckling to himself. Improvement was always a journey but it was one he was happy to embark upon. He was getting stronger. Little by little.
