Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Aoren couldn’t remember the last time that he’d sat down and spent time to actually construct a purposeful scroll of power. Most of what he’d made over the past year had simply been sigils drawn upon the surface of his own skin in an attempt to direct and focus his own djed. The last time he’d attempted a scroll it had not ended so well. Much time had passed since then. Aoren felt much more confident in his abilities as a Glypher these days.

The Drykas sat in the Within library at one of the study tables. Arrayed about him were sheets of blank parchment, a jar of black paint, and the brushes that he had become so familiar with. Sitting forward in his chair Aoren picked up one of his fine detail brushes dipping it into the black paint. He brought a sheet of parchment forward touching the brush to the surface beginning the work of tracing a Focus. Glyphs were simple things. They were a work of art drawn to give meaning to something else. That meaning was what Aoren directed it to be. For Aoren it was like writing a sentence with shapes and symbols not letters. He took great care with the runes that he drew around the Focus. The Barrier of the scroll was perhaps the most important part. While simple in its fundamental design, Aoren had learned that by rushing through the construction of the Barrier, the scroll would most certainly malfunction.

There was an apartment in Syliras with a scorch mark upon the stone floor to attest to that fact. The memory brought a smirk to his face. In short order the Barrier was completed leaving only the Trigger to be mapped out accordingly. Aoren set his paint brush down contemplating on how best to fashion the Trigger to release the magic he intended to store within the scroll. He did not want to make the Trigger so broad that there was a chance it could be activated at random. Nor did he want to attempt to make it so specific that only he could utilize the scroll. He sat staring at the unfinished scroll pondering for a few moments. Taking up his brush Aoren wrote out the specifics of the Trigger slowly and methodically. Aoren keyed the Trigger to a vocal command spelling it slowly.

Power contained, be now unrestrained.

Setting his brush aside, Aoren drew upon his djed opening himself up to the lingering awareness on the edge of his consciousness. He dove into the river of his djed Flux swimming through the current until he found a point where he could anchor himself. Standing firm in that mental strem, Aoren stood there in the rapid stream of energy flowing through him. With an even breath he drew to himself the strength of will needed to become a boulder capable of redirecting those tumultuous powers into focused intent. Closing his eyes he brought his right hand forward touching it to the Focus of the scroll.

Keeping hold of that concentration, Aoren nudged the flow of his djed Flux into his right arm. Aoren envisioned the energy flowing into his arm clinging to the muscles. He instilled into that energy the idea of iron resolve. Insurmountable strength and a resolute firmness. Opening his eyes, he watched as the Focus illuminated as it drew in the power that was being directed upon it. Immediately following the glowing of the Focus the Barrier flashed brightly in conjunction with the Trigger sealing in the power.

Aoren withdrew his hand quickly as he released the hold he maintained on his djed. He felt the streams of power revert back to their original flow with a mild throb in his arm from the strain. Flux was still something he was getting accustomed to using but it was a magic that was quickly becoming his preferred discipline. He waited for a few moments expecting the runes drawn upon the surface of the parchment to glow before the Barrier cracked to release the power that was contained within it. When that didn’t happen, Aoren released a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He gingerly took up the scroll being careful not to damage the integrity of the rune upon its surface. Slowly he rolled the scroll adding a thin bit of twine to keep it from unraveling before setting it aside.

One scroll down. Five more to go.

Aoren brought another sheet of parchment in front of him. He set to work drawing the components of another Glyph upon its surface. He dipped his brush into the paint, drew the Focus with the Barrier wrapping around it. The Trigger he fashioned to follow the same steps as before to be keyed to a vocal command. The command itself was different this time. It was a precaution that Aoren felt a wise thing. He did not want to make all of his scrolls activate according to the same trigger words. Scrolls with different functions were best keyed to different commands hinting at their purpose. Adding a bit more paint to his brush he wrote out the vocal command that would activate the scroll.

Power contained, be now swift and true.

The Drykas leaned back in his chair allowing the paint to dry. He stood up from the table taking the incomplete scroll with him. Gently he set it upon the floor then stood atop the Glyph. Breathing evenly he opened himself up to the flow of energy within his body. He lingered on the edge of the roiling ocean that expanded out before him. To witness the amount of power that was coiled within every motion, every thought, and every breath that he took was still something that he was trying to wrap his head around. He did not linger on that for long. Anchoring himself at the center of his being, Aoren slowly redirected the power within himself to his legs.

As he moved the Flux into place Aoren concentrated on the idea of swiftness in motion. He instilled the thoughts of the rushing stream of energy into the djed that built up in the muscles and wrapped itself around his bones. The glow of the Glyph receiving the power that he had infused himself with caught his attention. When it began to fade the Drykas released the hold on the magic. He felt the weariness of using the Flux sink a little deeper into his muscles but trusted that he was not yet at the point where he would fall into overgiving.

Stepping off of the scroll he picked it up setting it on the study table. He waited. The moments ticked by and when it seemed that the scroll was not going to give out on him he smiled. Rolling it up wrapping a thin piece of twine around the center, he set it with the other. The Seer ran his hands through his hair resuming his seat taking up his brush once more. The steady work continued as he began fashioning another scroll bringing another sheet of parchment forward.

The Glyph was created in short order following the same steps as the previous ones. Aoren was fairly confident that he had a solid foundation to work from at this point. He modified this particular scroll with something different however. Instead of a single Barrier, he formed a distinct Path for the power that would be contained within the Focus to travel. The Seer set down his brush bringing the middle finger of his left hand forward. He squeezed the finger rubbing it so that the pad became red with blood. Taking a calming breath Aoren brought it to his mouth catching the skin between his canine teeth. He squeezed his eyes shut biting down through the flesh.

His eyes watered slightly as the pain lanced through his hand he opened his eyes lowering his hand to the parchment as a bead of blood welled up. He let it drop onto the sheet then quickly retracted his hand. Without hesitation he opened himself up to the soothing power of Rak’keli’s gift. It washed through him taking with it the wound that he had created for himself. The pain evaporated leaving behind nothing but a memory. Taking up a different brush, Aoren placed it directly in the bead of blood that rest on the parchment. Methodically he used it to paint a symbol different than that of the runes encircling the Focus as the Path and even that of the Trigger. The Switch took shape slowly as Aoren was largely inexperienced with its implementation. He knew the principles behind how it was supposed to work. Whether or not they would work effectively in this case remained to be seen.

When the rudimentary scroll was complete, Aoren set to work on imbuing it with power. Again he drew upon his djed opening himself up to the energy that flowed within his body. It was more difficult than his previous attempt. The navigation of the streams of power was less smooth as the strain on his djed became more pressing. Still, Aoren managed to weave his mental hold upon the magic through himself to the point where he could solidly achieve what he had in mind.

Grasping the Flux, Aoren brought both of his hands forward to touch the edge of the Focus resting at the center of the scroll. He breathed steadily calming the storm within his mind. He sought to soothe the energy within himself that it might be easier to put into motion. The harshest edges of the energy within him remained but the rolling stream was calmed slightly. The Drykas sorcerer gave a mental command to the power that he could take hold of. In it he instilled the idea that this djed, this energy was fashioned for a single purpose and that was strength. He envisioned the Akalak warriors who trained in Gideon’s Glory honing the strength of their bodies. He thought on the years of training that he had spent disciplining himself to be a martial combatant. He even pondered on the immovable power there was to behold in the beauty of a mountain.

All of these thoughts he poured into the djed he was directing into the Focus of the Glyph. It glowed in response copying the magic that was being directed at it. When that task was complete, Aoren released the hold he held over the djed within his body. He could feel it pressing against his mental restraints demanding to fall back into its natural current. With a sigh he allowed the energy to do so.

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Aoren fought back the wave of weariness that settled itself in his muscles. He sank back in his chair considering how to approach his next course of action.

Simple enough in theory. Will it actually work however?

He didn’t honestly know. This was not something that he attempted often. With that in mind he was approaching it cautiously. He allowed himself just a few moments of reprieve after his forceful exertions over the power of Flux. Leaning forward he picked up the scroll rising from his seat to place it on the floor once more. It was best that he not rest for too long otherwise he would not truly find the motivation to complete his project.

Carefully he stood atop the parchment being mindful of not to tear the sheet or smudge the Glyph in some way. With a calming breath, Aoren opened himself back up to the power that existed within his own body. The Flux still existed as an interesting aspect of himself. It was, in many ways, like staring into a mirror. Within it he could feel every part of himself even if he did not fully understand what those part of himself meant. It was an exploration of the truth that burned at the heart of his being. For that reason alone the magic was incredibly appealing to him. It required him to delve into the very depths of his soul in search of answers.

[Sanctuary] Scrollcrafting

With a mildly shaky exhale, Aoren began to manipulate the energy within his body. The kickback was instantaneous. He felt a pain lance through his core that made him grit his teeth but he pressed through it. The Drykas mage redirected the Flux to his legs grasping for ideas of speed and agility. Pieces of his control over his djed Flux slipped through his mental fingers causing the muscles in his legs to spasm. Still, Aoren persevered. He kept hold of the magic as the Glyph illuminated once again registering the djed that was being pushed upon it. When the illumination faded, Aoren immediately released the hold he maintained over the Flux magic. Reaching back he gripped the back of the chair as he gingerly stepped off of the scroll.

His whole body shook as he picked it up off the floor still using the sturdiness of the chair as a measure of support. With a weary sigh he plopped back into the chair setting the scroll in front of him. Aoren propped his elbow upon the surface of the table just breathing steadily for a few moments. He closed his eyes wading through the tiredness that had infused itself into his body. Even then his head felt heavy so he simply folded his arms upon the table laying his head down just listening to the world around him. The moments ticked by as he simply drifted through his consciousness. When he finally managed to pull himself out of his sleepy state, Aoren rubbed his face.

Leaning back in his chair he stared at the scroll in front of him. With a sigh he picked up a brush dipping it in the black paint once more. There was still once aspect of the scroll that needed to be completed. Touching the brush to the surface of the parchment he shaped the command that would release the magic contained within the scroll.

Power contained, be mighty and fast.

A scroll designed to enhance both speed and strength. He felt it a suitable combination that built upon the principles of Flux magic. Whether or not it would actually work he wasn’t quite sure yet. The only way to see that through was to witness the scrolls in action. He gave the paint time to dry before rolling the scroll up now that the Trigger had been completed. Wrapping the twine around the scroll he set it with the others sitting back to consider the work that he’d done.

Glyphing opened the door to many possibilities. As he studied the scrolls that he’d made he realized he was just beginning to venture into the broader depths of what he was capable of doing with the magic. His foray into those depths would have to wait for another day. Rising from his chair Aoren gathered his materials including the scrolls making his way out the library.
