Lora approached the closed door to her new shop. She frowned. Her hands were full carrying her palette, covered in a rainbow of paints, and a bowl full of water. Carefully balanced the bowl on a open shop on her palate, she had a free hand to open the door.

She opened the door, ready for her first day at her new job. Yesterday, she had spent nearly the whole day preparing the shop and so she had decided to just go home after it was ready. Today she was actually going to sell something.

Leaving the door opened so that the early morning sunlight streamed into the shop, creating a stripe on the floor. The yellow light gave the hard looking room a more warm and nice feeling. Lora smiled. She decided that from now on she would leave the door opened to the shop every day. She only hoped it wouldn’t make the room get too cold. She adjusted the cloak that hung around her neck as she thought about the cold.

Lora set her palate and water bowl down on the desk. Taking her satchel off of her shoulder, Lora plopped it down on the ground next to her new chair and she took a seat in it. It wasn’t the most comfortable seat she had ever been it. It was hard wood. She scooted it in closer to the desk.

Reaching over, she pulled her satchel up onto the desk next to the pallette. It made a subtle thud as it hit the hardwood. She pulled the bag opened. There were a number of canvases in the bag, each waiting to be painted on. Lora selected one of the medium sized canvases. Then she reached into the bottom of her bag, to do that she had to stand up because her arm was not long enough. She scooped up her set paint brushes and laid them out on the desk.

Running her eyes over all of the objects she had lain out on the desk, Lora made sure she had everything she needed for painting. Once she was sure she had everything, she set the satchel back onto the ground and prepared to paint.

With the blank canvas set out in front of her, Lora realized there was nothing for her to paint. When she had sold her paintings in Mura she had the entire ocean and constantly changing types of boats to paint. Now there was only the inside of the building. She knew she could probably paint the inside of the building but she found nothing particularly interesting about it.

Lora suddenly realized that she was going to need to paint something without looking at it. This was a form of art that she had been wanting to do for a while now. She had tried it numerous times before but she hoped that now that she was forced to do it, she hoped she would get better at it. Maybe she would even developed her own style.

Taking a deep breath, Lora prepared to start painting.

Dipping her paintbrush into the yellow paint, Lora pulled a glob of it into the air. She decided to paint a flower. She had painted flowers numerous times in the past and so hoped that she would be able to remember how to paint one without looking at the physical object.

She lowered the paintbrush down to the paper and began to create the relative outline of the petals. Her hand moved unsteadily across the paper. This was new, something she had never done before, so naturally, she was nervous. What if I messed up? She took a deep breath, steadying her hand. There was nothing worse than being nervous while painting.

Now with the vibrant yellow base down, Lora removed her paint brush from the canvas. She stuck it back into the yellow but this time instead of transferring the color directly to the art surface, she kept it on the palate. She mixed it with some of the white paint, making it a much lighter pale color. It reminded Lora of the color sunbeams made when you looked at them just right and it looked as though you could see them there, floating in the air.

She frowned as she noticed a speck of yellow in the white paint. When she had first started painting, Lora had always cleaned her brush off between switching colors but now, especially when she was mixing the paints she rarely did that, thinking it took far too much time. Instead she got the second color of paint with a sort of scooping motion. The problem with this was that it often allowed some of the first color into the paint of the second color. Usually it didn’t cause too much of a problem so Lora decided to leave it.

She took her newly mixed sunbeam yellow and began to add highlights to the drooping petals of the flower on her canvas. On the few occasions when she had tried to paint an image without looking at it, she had always had some difficulty with keeping track of where her imaginary light source was. In this image, she decided to make it look as though the light was coming from directly behind the viewer.

Suddenly, Lora had an idea. She was going to paint the flower as if it was being seen at night and was lit only by the light of a torch. Being used to painting her images in bright sunlight, she thought this would make this image different on multiple accounts.

Lora moved quickly to mix her light yellow with a drop of orange. She knew that in order to paint the flower in torch light, she would need some orange in the highlighted parts. She hoped she would be able to emulate the warm glow that came from a torch off of the petals of the flower.

With the new, light orange-yellow color paint on her brush, Lora prepared to add it to the page when suddenly she heard a light knock at her opened door. It was her first customer.

Lora had been so involved in her painting that she had failed to notice the young man approaching her building. He had dirty blond hair and a round, kind looking face. His knuckles were held playfully against the wooden door and he was smiling.

“You new here?” He asked with a professional coolness. His voice was soft but still carried enough authority to be heard. It sounded warm. Lora placed her paintbrush down on the desk in front of her and rose to her feet.

“Yes, today is actually my first day. Here. My first day here.” She corrected herself. “I have sold my paintings elsewhere before. Back in Mura where I used to live. Actually, you are my first customer here.” She frowned as he found herself rambling. The man just giggled lightly. He took a step into the store and glance around curiously.

“So you sell paintings?” He walked over to one of the tables and began to examine the paintings.

“Yes, that is correct.” Lora responded. She bit her lip as he didn’t respond and instead stared intently at her painting. She was suddenly concerned that she didn’t live up here his standards. It had seemed like an awfully long time that he had been looking over the paintings.

“Where is this from?” He asked pointing to one of the painting of the docks back in Mura. She had taken many of her paintings from Mura with her to Syliras. Although she was not ready to part with all of them, she had put a number of them in her store to be sold.

“Mura. Its Mura. I used to live there. Actually, I just moved from there.” She explained.

“So your saying you will not be making more like this anytime soon?” The man clasped his hands behind his back. He continued to look over the paintings.

“Well, I suppose but I have been working on painting without looking at things. So, maybe I will be able to paint more, from my mind.”

“Hmm.” The man considered. “I’ll take this one. How much is it?” He turned around with a large painting in his hands. It was one of the many paintings Lora had done of the docks.

“Of course, it is large so it costs one gold and two silver mizas.” Lora informed him.

The man didn’t respond but placed the painting back on the table and stuck his hand into his left pocket. He pulled out a large money back. He appeared to be fairly well off from the size of it.

He slid it opened slowly, as if he were trying to show it off. He sorted through its contents for what seemed like longer than it should take for one to pull out a few coins but Lora gave it no mind as the man placed the coins into her hand.

She suddenly didn’t know what to do with them. She needed to keep them separate from her own personal money so that she could turn the profit into the knights. She had not thought about where she would put the money previously and so now was left hold the money awkwardly in her hand. Not sure what to do, Lora set the coins down on the desk. They clicked on its wooden surface.

“Thank you. Is there anything else I can assist you with?” Lora smiled courteously. When her main audience had been people at the docks who she would likely never see again, she had not needed to try to get them to come back. Now, the same people were always going to be around her shop. It was bad business for her to not try to bring them back.

The man nodded, straight faced. He silently returned to the painting he had bought which was laying on the table with the other paintings. He picked it up with careful hands and quickly left the building. It seemed as though he was in a hurry, although Lora had never gotten that impression from him before. She frowned. He was sort of odd.

Now to deal with the money she would need to keep for the knight.

“Oh, and I need to start keeping a record of what I sell.” She remembered. Glancing around, she realized she would need a notebook of some kind or something else to keep her records in. She would also need a pouch of some kind to hold her money. She didn’t have either of those.

Lora stood up. She remembered seeing a general store a little ways down the road. Those seemed like items she could easily obtain at a general store. Quickly running her hand over her pocket, Lora made sure she had some of her own money there to buy what she needed. Feeling the outline of a few coins, she skipped over to the door.

Stepping out onto the street, Lora closed her store door behind her. She hoped that would indicate to people that is was closed.

“Which way was it?” Lora questioned to herself. “Right or left?”

She furrowed her eyebrows in thought. Realizing her house was to the left so that must have been the directions she had come from and seen the store, she began to walk in that direction.

As always, the streets were full of people. The earliness of the morning didn’t hinder them as they went about their daily lives. Although, Lora realized it wasn’t early morning any more, it was barely morning.

Not positive on the exact location of the general store, Lora scanned the sides of the street. She nearly ran into a few people because she was not paying attention to her direction but eventually she spotted the place.

It was located on the opposite side of the road so Lora had to walk around a few people who were going in the opposite direction as her. Her small frame allowed her to maneuver the crowd with ease. She dashed into the well lit stone building and skidded to a halt.

There were a few other people browsing the numerous shelves stuffed into the small room. The place seemed packed with all the items being sold. Lora wasn’t sure how to find what she was looking for. Suddenly a section off to her left containing notebooks caught her eye. She smiled and walked over to it.

There were a few different types of notebooks, varying in size and colors. Lora selected a medium sized one with a dark blue cover. She picked it up and looked it over. Opening it, she flipped through the pages. It seemed like exactly what she needed. Next to the notebook section was a few shelves dedicated to to quills and bottles of ink. Lora smiled as she remember that she already owned that equipment and had even elected to take it with her to the her store. Although she had brought it for a different reason, she was glad that it would be of use.

Now to find the sack for her coins.

Lora began to wander through the tight aisles, searching for anything that could hold her money. It took a bit longer this time but eventually she found a leather money pouch. Unlike the notebooks, it was alone on its shelf surrounded by very different things. This seemed to be the miscellaneous section for items that didn’t fit anywhere else.

Lora scooped up the sack with her hand that wasn’t carrying the notebook. She took her items to the woman sitting at the desk stuffed into the back corner of the room.

“I would like to buy these please.” Lora called for the woman’s attention and placed the items onto the desk. The woman was just past her prime, her black hair growing specked with numerous strands of white. Her face was angular and pointed but the woman had a generally kind air about her.

“Of course, that will be four gold for the notebook and five silver for the pouch.” The woman said. Lora reached into her pocket and shuffled around with her coins to get the correct amount and then handed it to the woman. She smiled and took them.

Lora exited the building and headed directly back to her shop. She walked with more purpose now that she knew where she was going.

Upon arriving, Lora left the door opened hoping for more visitors. She settled into her desk and poured the coins, which were still sitting on it into the new pouch she had for them. The desk had a number of drawers along the legs of it, Lora opened the top one on the right and put in the pouch. This city was fairly safe but there was no reason for Lora to keep her money out in the open.

She then pulled the ink vial and the feather quill out of her bag. The bottle made a hollow popping noise as Lora pulled the cork off the top of it. Lora shifted her painting out of her way so that she could open the notebook in front of her. she was suddenly struck with the fact she didn’t know what to write. She dipped the quill in the ink slowly and waved it over the vial, trying to come up with a solution. Eventually the settled on:

1 large painting +1gm 2sm

She hoped those were the kinds of records she was suppose to keep because she was still not sure.

Shifting her notebook, ink and quill to the side of the desk, Lora drew up her paintbrush. Now she had all the material she needed to really sell artwork. She began once again to paint her scene and wait for customers.
