Oswald Adams

Appearance

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Birthday: 80 Fall 492 A.V.
Birthplace: Sahova
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 160 lbs

Appearance: Oswald does not cut an impressive figure standing amongst the strange and beautiful creatures of Mizahar. He is a skinny, lanky man who carries himself with a closed body language and sloping posture.

His red-brown hair, much like the man himself, falls into an unruly, disheveled style. He does keep his hair short and attempts to tame it on occasion, but somehow it always manages to tangle itself up again.

He has smiling, soulful green eyes which shine against his rather pale, slightly freckled skin. He can often be found with a lopsided grin on his face, crinkling the skin around his eyes and setting his face alight with joy.

Character Concept

Oswald is a man consumed by a drive to explore and discover. His head is filled with dreams of far off lands populated by interesting people just waiting to meet him. He is a kind soul and an optimist through and through, always managing to find hope even in dark or dangerous circumstances. Very trusting and bounding about with youthful energy, Oswald is the type of person who would meet a stranger for a minute and feel as though they had known each other for a millennium. He finds miracles in the most mundane of situations, and tries to approach each day with an open mind and an adventurous spirit.

Though an upbeat and helpful sort, Oswald is not without his edges. He is assured in his beliefs, both intellectual and spiritual, and will defend them doggedly in a manner bordering on blind arrogance. He hates admitting that he was wrong and loathes asking for help even more. He is likely to turn the other cheek when wronged, but when the line is crossed and his friends or family are abused, one might find a monster behind the man with the far-away gaze and the cheery smile.

Character History

Oswald’s life began with a bet.

In the dreary halls of the Citadel of Sahova, two Nuit wizards argued over the malleability of human minds. One, Seforen, theorized that man was born with an innate nature, a temperament that could not be changed no matter the circumstances of their environment. The other, Tetrias, disagreed, saying that humans were more like a slate yet to be carved; containing all the potential in the world if given proper guidance. In order to test their theory, an agreement was formed between the two. Seforen would pick a child from the Pulsars, an angry and vile thing long since separated from his birth family, and Tetrias would attempt to shape the boy into scholar and a mage. If three years passed and Tetrias failed, the wizard would abdicate his rank in favor of serving as Seforen’s apprentice for three times that amount of time; an embarrassment that his reputation would not easily recover from. With the terms set and the child chosen, Oswald was plucked from poverty and placed into a world unknown.

The first year-and-a-half was unbearable for both Oswald and Tetrias. Oswald hated the Nuit for what he was and wanted no part of any game that his kind was playing. He spited the wizard every chance got, refusing lessons and knowledge in favor of frustrating his captor. Tetrias had tried compassion to teach the young human, he had tried discipline, but it was beginning to seem like his colleague was right. Oswald would not learn no matter the Nuit’s efforts. His nature would not allow it.

The Prairie of Sahova proved the turning point in this experiment. Tetrias had dragged the boy out to the fields to attempt and appeal to his ambition by showing how powerful the knowledge he offered would make him. It started as calm a day as anyone in Sahova could expect, clouds looming overhead but withholding the rain that they promised. Oswald watched Tetrias demonstrate his magic with the same bored, petulant expression that had been a permanent companion throughout his year with the Nuit. Tetrias tried in vain to emphasize how miraculous the power he was attempting to gift to the boy was. All was calm, until the skies broke open and an otherworldly roar rivaled the thunder above.

Someone’s summoning experiment went awry as the rain poured forth, disrupting their circle and thus their control of the creature that they had summoned. It raged onward against the storm, seeking out food and settling for the unlikely pair not thirty meters away. Oswald looked into its eyes and saw an emptiness that even the most villainous Nuit could not match. As the monster rushed closer to him, the boy knew that today death would claim him.

He did expect the tattered form of the Nuit whom he had hated to step in front of the beast. He did expect that Nuit to use the very same power he had been demonstrating moments before to summon a portal of swirling black between he and the monster. He did not expect the monster to vanish as it passed into the nothingness before him. He did not expect for the Nuit to scoop his shaking form into his arms as he clung to the safety those dead limbs promised. He did not expect that after that day, he would consider that Nuit family.

The year-and-a-half that followed was some of the happiest times of either Oswald’s or Tetrias’ life. Oswald found he had a passion for discovery and learning. Tetrias found himself fond of teaching such an eager mind, and fonder still of the boy who possessed it. The Nuit initiated him in Summoning, Voiding, and Glyphing, so that he might never know the fear of being helpless again. Oswald, in turn, helped in any way he could around the lab. The two became a common sight, almost inseparable despite their differences or perhaps because of them. It seemed that Tetrias would win his bet with Seforen after all. Surprisingly, the Nuit did not relish that fact.

Tetrias knew that once this bet was over, Oswald would be turned loose into the streets of Sahova. Tetrias could apprentice him, yes, perhaps even adopt him, but he knew in his unbeating heart that the Citadel was no place for the happy child. An island of the dead was not a place that the living could find safety or success in. He could not abandon the boy he had come to consider a son without knowing he was safe. So, in the dead of night and with as much as they could both carry, Tetrias and Oswald set out for the safest place the Nuit knew. Ravok. There, under the uneasy protection of Rhysol, Tetrias could raise the boy he loved into the man that Oswald was destined to be.

The years that followed were a blend of laughter, learning, and love. Oswald and Tetrias obtained citizenship papers, the Nuit began to work at the Institute of higher learning, and the boy continued to grow alongside the canals of Lake Ravok. His studies continued at an admirable rate, devouring any knowledge he could come across and reveling in amount life the city had. He continued to help in his adopted father’s experiments, and would have happily done so for the rest of his life had not fate intervened.

Oswald had gone out to run errands when Tetrias had disappeared. There was no notice, no trace, and no evidence of why or where he had gone. Many who knew him held suspicions that the Nuit had simply gotten tired of the quiet life with his adopted son, traded bodies with a corpse, and vanished into the night. Oswald refused to believe that, knew that there had to have been some reason for his teacher’s absence. In Tetrias’ notes he had found hasty scribblings of the Nuit’s discovery of a new set of astral coordinates, but no writings of the coordinates themselves. The only other option being abandonment, Oswald now searches for his father among the stars; seeking out new and dangerous worlds all in a desperate attempt to find the only family he has ever known.

Welcome to Mizahar! There are a few errors with your character sheet so lets get started

  • No humans can be born on Sahova, the Isle of the Nuit is not a place for the living.
  • You would be 23 so far, as Fall of 516 has not come around yet
  • Cloak OR Coat, not both.
  • Your Heirloom is not allowed. No heirloom can contain information regarding magics, notes or otherwise.
  • How did you learn Nadar-Canoch the ancient language?
  • Your housing sounds like an actual starting package, if it is you cannot trade in your housing, otherwise please list the inn/tavern you are residing in.

Once you have completed what I have asked please let me know via Private Message.

Thank you,
Astator.
Which way do you want to go? Up or Down?

Attention Players, Graders, and Storytellers:

A character sheet does not require the green checkmark for the player to roleplay. This is just a notification to all that the character sheet has passed through the Liaisons thorough checklist and meets Mizahar standards.

All sheets with a large red X or a speech bubble beside their thread title do not recieve grades and cannot continue threads they are currently involved in until all issues have been fixed and verified.
