Boo had little trouble understanding the reverence afforded the okomo. Despite their massive frame and heavy bodies, thanks to their crystalline skeletons, there was an undoubted grace to their movement as they casually wandered about the Sharai Peak. Khana, head of okomo caretaking endeavors, had ensured Boo was well informed and aware of just how sacred the majestic beasts were. It was an important lesson for a newcomer to learn, and he was glad for it. His appreciation and the chance to work with them was unmeasured.

He was quite settled on the fact that he liked the Sharai Peak very much. It did not share the same hustle and bustle of the other peaks, instead opting for a more laid back atmosphere that rarely was challenged. Despite that outer visage of peace and tranquility, there was in fact a busy and well oiled system at work that ensured things on the peak ran smoothly. After all, being the agricultural center of Lhavit, providing the city with the lion's share of food and produce, as well as varying cuts of meat from the regular livestock, it also grew large quantities of tea, perhaps Lhavit's primary export. Indeed, the Sharai Peak was the beating heart of Lhavit, and those who worked or resided there would not have it any other way.

Admittedly though, Boo's work for now was a little more on the laid back side. Khara had promised that in time and with training, he would learn himself to ride the okomo and in turn be able to teach others. But such a respectable task was much later down the line. For now he was a handler, shepherd, or general caretaker. Something along those lines. His duties ranged from grooming the okomo with thick haired brushes, a strap on the back so that it could be worn as a glove, to cleaning up after them. It was not the most fanciful job shoveling giant goat crap, but it certainly made a fine fertilizer. Nothing went to waste on Sharai Peak.

As well as these basic duties, he also had the task of herding back any okomo who had chosen to wander off for the day, (though it should be noted that more often than not, they returned of their own accord), checking them over for any signs of injury or disease, and the even more tranquil duty of simply standing around watching them as they free grazed across the man made pastures. It might have seemed a boring and monotonous job for some, but Boo welcomed the quiet and peaceful surroundings that his work afforded him.

Then along came Chew Brown.

Boo humored himself with giving nicknames to some of the okomo, usually the ones that had some distinct feature so that he could recognize them again. 'Chew Brown' referenced one particular okomo in such an obvious way that most likely anyone when told, would roll their eyes in mild amusement. Firstly, this okomo had a certain exaggerated manner of chewing the grass and roots, its goat mouth moving in a circular motion but in a slow pace as though savoring every moment. Meanwhile, unlike the majority of okomo that were white or off-white, Chew Brown was...well...brown. More of an earthy beige color to be precise. But otherwise, he was brown. Chew's distinguishing feature was that one of his crystal horns was about two inches longer than the other, though both still stabbed upwards like a daunting pair of rapiers.

The real standout detail in all of this was that today, Chew Brown had elected to dress himself in a rather worn and sorry looking brown hat. It hung from the longer horn, as though someone had mistaken Chew for a coat stand, having then tossed their hat nonchalantly onto the unsuspecting beast before wandering off to who knows where. Stranger yet was that Chew seemed completely oblivious to the whole thing. Or better yet, as Boo mused to himself, maybe the beast knew full well of his new fashionable statement. He was to be the finest dressed okomo on all of the peak, the envy of the rest of the herd.

Boo shook his head in amusement, was about to approach Chew to rescue the hat, when the okomo seemed suddenly to recollect a particularly tasty patch of grass elsewhere, and jerked off at a run away from the human. Indeed, Boo could only stand there mystified, but no sooner had Chew made his exit that the man thought nothing more of it. Instead he continued to walk the perimeter of the current pasture he was watching over, noting the various handlers and other scattering of folk going about their day. There were farmers entering and exiting the many hot houses that had played host to Lhavit's all important crops over the winter season, while over there in another area a group of shinya were presently saddling their okomo mounts, each going about checking straps and harnesses under the watchful gaze of what appeared to be a stern looking captain.

Some people here were simply just out for a stroll, no doubt enjoying the peace and warmer weather, now that Spring seemed more enthusiastic about its role in Lhavit. Boo continued, his mind wandering to no place in particular as he continued to observe his surroundings. The day was still in its infancy, and he wondered what the rest of it might have in store before the night took charge to spin its own story.

Better The Okomo You Know (Neive)

Postby Neive on March 17th, 2016, 2:08 pm

The very air of the Sharai Peak radiated serenity as the young Inarta breathed in deep. Her usually milky complexion was tinged like that of a rose from her hike. Having tramped all the way from the Zintia Peak, the young Inarta huffed and puffed – her fitness was not what it used to be. As Syna’s bright gleam shone over the lush green of the agricultural epicentre, Neive faltered a step, her cerulean gaze overwhelmed with the sights of Lhavit’s more rural part of the city.
As far as the eye could see, emerald seas of plush grasses, divided into manmade pastures for the iconic Okomo to roam. Dotted around the landscape, fields of produce were being racked and prepped for the seedlings as the farmers began to plant their crops.
The Peak was afire with activity, yet not in the sense of the intense buzz as like the more paved and built areas of Lhavit. There was a soothing feel to the place, it was quite delightful as Neive let the warm breeze wash over her, her gaze soaking in the wondrous sights, her fiery locks dancing across her face.
From her vantage point upon a high rise of the Peak, Neive searched the sprawled land for the Okomo Estates. Shifting the heavy weight of the burden in her pack to a more comfortable position upon her slender shoulders, the young Inarta once again found herself incredibly swamped by the enormity of one of Lhavit’s Peaks.
Mixed throughout the shimmering, dancing green meadows were several hothouses, cottages, sheds and barns. It was near impossible from this view to pinpoint a specific housing estate. She would simply need to throw herself into the sea of green and hope that she could find it. Sighing to herself as she set off down the rise, Neive reminded herself that she really needed to get herself a map or something. She had been here a season already and still she did not know her way around even a fraction of the City.

As Syna shifted across the blue, cumulous dotted sky, Neive began to doubt her plan. She had been weaving her way across the dusty pathways of the Sharai Peak for a while and to no avail. Using her hand to shield her gaze from the glaring light of Syna, the young Inarta glanced around her.
Fields, fields, fields and more fields, in every direction for as far as she could see, with only the odd barn to break up the jade scenery. Planting both her fists on her hips in resignation, the young Inarta bit her lower lip as she pondered her predicament.
Her mentor would have her hide if she didn’t deliver this commission today. Mindful of the fragile good nestled safely in her backpack, the young Inarta knew that it had been a special order made for the important owner of the Okomo Estates. A high priority client and a delivery the young Inarta could not mess up. Thus was the duties of an apprentice.
The young Inarta started off once again, tramping along the dusty trail, following alongside a large open field where a herd of the majestic Okomo grazed. Admiring the large, goat-antelope’s surprising grace, Neive smiled as they contently wandered, feasting upon the dancing stems of grass.
Their lives seemed so simple, so pleasant. As the young Inarta mused about what life would be like if she was ever to be reincarnated as an Okomo, her azure gaze suddenly caught a glimpse of human movement in the distance.
Her stomach suddenly aflutter at the prospect of salvation, the young Inarta raced along the fencing in hopes of finding the soul watching over the field of foraging Okomo.
As she caught up with the man, Neive smiled with a relieved sigh, raising a hand in address as she raced to greet him, waving to catch the male’s attention, “Hey!”

Better The Okomo You Know (Neive)

Boo had ceased his progress for a time, leaning back on the three foot tall wall that was constructed of stones of varying shapes and sizes. If one were to look at it with scrutiny, the wall did not present itself as sturdy or confident, as far as walls went. Instead the combination of different stones, that had been seemingly piled one on top the other without prejudice or plan, gave the impression they might topple over in unison from perhaps even the slightest gust of wind.

But looks were deceiving, a fact that echoed through time immemorial. That stone wall might have been in the business of misrepresenting itself to any who bothered to cast a glance it's way, but underneath the visual facade, that wall had heart and strength. It had witnessed raging storms and heavy rains. It had been tested, challenged and bullied by a clumsy okomo here, or a Lhavtian who climbed over it for a shortcut there. But still it stood, the stones bringing their individual strength to form an army of stubborn resilience.

Looks were deceiving indeed.

Having lingered for a while, Boo pushed himself up and headed along the wall's edge. Further along a gate awaited, leading into the adjoining pasture. It would have been easy enough to vault the wall to save a minute or two, but Boo was quite decided on the fact that walls were walls and gates were gates. Life is full of walls and gates, he thought to himself, pondering on the implications of his observation.

Closing the gate behind him, Boo sensed a flicker of movement out the corner of his eye. His attention was turned back to the wall behind him for a moment, hearing the familiar resonance of Elsa's voice address him in her sardonic tone. "Don't look now, but a scruffy looking vagabond is heading your way." Boo turned back to see a figure running along the edge of the pasture, without doubt heading straight towards him. As she drew closer, she flashed a smile as she raised her hand, issuing an almost breathless 'Hey', resulting from her exertions.

"Ridden hard and put up wet," Elsa announced out loud. Boo had a few moments before the woman was within conversational distance, affording him the chance to deliver a questioning look at Elsa. The woman in red had taken up court upon the stone wall, leaning back on her hands either side of her while she playfully kicked her legs in rhythm. As always, the brim of her hat obscured her face, leaving only that accusing smirk in view. Sensing Boo's question, Elsa let out a huff of air, as though in contempt of having to explain herself further. "She looks as though these foul smelling beasts trampled her. A small mercy if they'd finished the job."

As always when people were near, Boo chose to ignore Elsa's sharp tongue, allowing just a quick shake of his head to show he had not approved of the comment. One day, I swear, that woman will say something kind. He was not about to bet on today though, instead moving towards the newcomer to put a little distance between him and Elsa. "Hey there," he shot back. He was quite curious as to what this interruption could mean, waiting patiently for the woman to catch her breath and provide the answers he sought.

[Job Thread] Better The Okomo You Know

The young lady and since caught her breath, after which she managed to compose herself and inquire after some directions. With the girl on her way, Boo turned his attention back to Elsa on the wall. But the sharp tongued madame had apparently decided the current situation was no longer worthy of her attention. Instead Boo opted to return to the field he had come from, scanning the immediate area for an okomo that he might give a once over. That was after all his reason for being here. Okomo handlers did not simply stand about all day staring into space

Closing the gate behind him, Boo almost jumped as he turned, finding Chew Brown but a couple of feet in front. Quite how the huge beast had managed to stealthily creep up on him with only a three foot wall to hide behind was quite the mystery. "Chew! You nearly gave me a heart attack, you fiend." There was a forgiving tone to Boo's voice, as he reached up to scratch the okomo behind the ear. Chew meanwhile seemed oblivious to any wrongdoing, instead focusing on the patch of grass before him, from which he took sizeable bites and proceeded to chew them in the manner fitting of his name.

With Chew seemingly content, Boo set to the task of checking the beast over. There was not really a lot to it if he was honest. One simply needed to be attentive and patient. The first was in order to catch anything that looked out of the ordinary. For example, he had a few days earlier found one okomo with a small shard of glass protruding from one of its massive hoofs. Thankfully the animal had not seemed to be in immediate discomfort, but of course the injury needed to be tended before any type of infection could set in. It was also important to look for any signs of discoloration or markings that were out of place. Okomo were large, yet graceful. But they were not impervious to injury. Bruising was a little more easier to note on the white furred variety, just as matted blood from any wounds was. But for darker toned okomo like Chew, a more detailed inspection was necessary.

As for the patience part, okomo were of the belief that they were free souls. As such, they did not understand the concept of standing still while a strange human looked them over. So it was then that you might be halfway through examining an okomo's fur, before it decided to turn about and wander off without any inclination of how rude it was being. "Okomo's prerogative", a colleague had called it. Thankfully in this instance, the grass patch before Chew had proven a most delectable selection, keeping him in place for the duration of Boo's exam. He ran his hands through the okomo's fur, feeling for any suspect or foreign entities, while also ensuring there was nothing else at fault with the otherwise magnificent beast. The hooves were all free of hitchhikers, the ears seemed clear of infection, Chew's nose was moist, a clear sign of good health. All in all Boo was satisfied that Chew Brown was in perfect working order, without any sign or indication of anything to suggest to contrary.

The only noticeable absence from Chew's earlier appearance was, of course, his brown hat. Before it had sat proudly atop the longer of his two horns. But now the fashionable attire was missing. Boo scanned the immediate area, wondering if perhaps the okomo had clumsily let it drop while grazing. But there was no sign at all of the brown hat. A mystery then. Perhaps he had imagined the whole thing, hat wearing okomo proving to be nothing more than a daydreamer's fancy, designed to pass the time of day with such silliness.

"Well, I'd say you're good to go, big guy." With that, Boo gave the beast a hearty pat on the rump, though Chew Brown remained rooted to the spot, clearly intent on going nowhere. It was then that the beast started to choke. At least it sounded like choking. Coughing maybe? Did okomo cough? What did that even sound like? In any case, Boo rushed to the front of the beast, dropping to one knee as he tried to lift Chew's head up. That was definitely some form of choking, as far as he could tell. He had no choice but to try and pry the mighty animal's mouth open, no easy task of course when said animal had no intention of letting someone do that. Chew took a few steps back in protest, evidently disgruntled by this invasion of privacy.

Boo followed, grabbing Chew by the jowl in a renewed effort. He somehow managed to get his hand in far enough where it was stuck. No teeth were clasping down on his hand, but it was in there for sure, and not about to come out. Chew backed up again, this time dragging Boo with him so that he was yanked off his feet. Mouth opened to release hand, leading Boo to plop face down on the ground in a prone position. There was a final spluttering before he felt something warm and wet land on top of his head. Slowly he drew himself to his knees, thinking at first that Chew had vomited all over him. Reluctantly his hands raised towards his head, fingers taking hold of whatever it was Chew had deposited on him. Not vomit at least. More like...fabric of some kind?

Pulling the item off his head, Boo held the sorry looking, chewed up and sodden hat in his hands. Apparently the hat had not been as tasty as the okomo first thought. Neither had it proved to be a good fit for Boo, who if he was honest, was not really into hats much at all, least of all those that had spent some time in an okomo's gullet. Dusting himself off and wiping away the last remnants of okomo phlegm from his head, Boo decided it was probably an ideal time to head back to headquarters for a break.

As for Chew Brown, he simply bowed his head once more, grabbed another mouthful of grass, and began to work it around in his mouth in that unique way of his. Boo could not be sure, but he felt as though Chew's gaze followed him, a subtle grin on his oxen like face. "I swear, if they ever make okomo meat legal...!"
