47th, Summer, 516 A.V.
The Crystal Hall

Alexandra was proud of how well the festival went down, despite how difficult it’s start was. The Aurora Soiree had it’s perks and it’s downfalls… and Alek was currently feeling the latter. Everything that was set up days ago now needed to be torn down, and part of that fell to the Winterflame hold. The amount of food that was served over the course of three days was in-measurable, not to mention all the slack in some responsibilities in the upkeep. Now it seemed all that slack was falling hard on the hold.

There were unintentional broken dishes scattered about, or pots that had been overlooked in the aftermath and that was just within the main hall. From the amount of work Alekxandra was staring at she almost wished there were arguments that needed overseeing. At least it wouldn’t involve her spending the day scrubbing out pots that reeked… and quite possibly had very unpleasant things growing from them.

Either way she figured the best way to work was up. Stepping on broken plates could lead to accidents and honestly the last thing Alek wanted was a visit to a healer because she got tripped up over a forgotten spoon lying on the ground. With a sigh she picked her way across the main part of the hall. While her hold had much to do, they were not the only ones doing the cleaning. There were ice sculptures that many Skyglow members were ensuring did not melt and made it out of the hall safely in one piece.

Several others from various holds were also picking up after the main hall, some of them scrubbing clean the sections that were clear. Many were so engrossed in their work they barely noticed Alek doing her best to avoid bumping into them. The hall that was once filled with joyous laughter–well it was still mostly that way. There was conversation and laughter still, but it did not hold the carefree tone it had in the days before. The few that did notice her simply gave her a nod in which she returned until she reached the kitchens. With a deep breath she crossed the threshold, sincerely hoping that things were not nearly as bad as they might appear.

The kitchens status compared to the hall… well it was neither as bad as she had feared, but nowhere near as clean as she had hoped. The floors and tabletops were smeared with forgotten food, and the sinks were nearly filled to the brim with pots and dishes. There were scraps of unusable food lying about here and there, but all in all the bulk of work wouldn’t be too hard with various members of her hold already skittering about the kitchens in work.

”Here, we could use some help with the floor.” Alek jolted back slightly at the sudden appearance of a broom in her face. The hand holding the broom out to her belonged to a girl probably around sixteen–familiar but Alek couldn’t put a name to her face. Without complain however she took the broom and followed the girl towards the back of the kitchen where most of the scraps seemed to have been thrown probably in the middle of a rush.

”Start to the left and move to the right.” It wasn’t as if sweeping was a difficult task, but with the looks of the kitchen it seemed like a ridiculous task to start with. Many were just tossing what scraps they could from the tables to the floor in order to deep clean the tables. But there seemed to be a method to the madness in the kitchen, one she had never seen before on such a large scale and she wasn’t about to argue.

Alek started with a mostly broken pile of plates in the far corner of the room. By the looks of it it had been where any broke dishes had simply been tossed in the rush of the three day party. Along with her there were several others with brooms and they worked quickly–like one entity–to clear the floor from one end to the other.

In some spots the scraps within the kitchen just refused to come up. The lack of care had left many of the once softer items to dry and solidify nearly solid to the floor and Alek couldn’t help but glare slightly at the offending scraps that meant she’d have to get on the floor and scrub just to get off.

Across the kitchen there were already pots of water resting precariously on the edge of bricks as close to the fire as possible without literally being in it. Next to the pots on a table were clean rags and a few spare bars of soap. Snagging a rag for each hand and shoving a bar of soap into her pocket, Alek used the rags to lift one of the pots of water. She wobbled slightly as the weight of the pot threatened to cause her to spill, but Alek managed to make it back safely with a few small spills.

Placing the pot down first, she tossed the second rag onto the nearest table and dipped the first into the water. She hissed slightly as the water scalded his fingers–hot but luckily not severe enough to leave permanent damage. Heat was something she was well experienced with and very used to being burned by.

Taking a deep breath–trying her best to ignore the pain shifting through her fingers–she twisted the rag until the hot water splashed across some tried pieces of fat stuck to the floor. While the water began to soften the fat, Alek pulled the soap out of her pocket and dipped just the end of it into the pot and used the rag to scrub the end of the soap firmly. She knew the fat would come up easily with the hot water, but getting if off the floor and keeping it from getting slick would be the harder part.

Puffing out her cheeks with a sigh, Alek fetched the second rag from the table and pressed it to the fat and water, letting the fabric soak the water. Scrubbing the rag across the floor a few times she made sure the majority of the fat had come up before tossing it aside and returning to the rag she had scrubbed soap all over.

Reaching her hand into the hot water, she was relieved to find it had cooled slightly. It was still plenty warm but it didn’t cause her to flinch in pain this time. Cupping a handful of water, she sprinkled it across the area where the fat had laid, following up with the soapy rag and used her weight to scrub the soap into the floor. There wasn’t much for suds on the floor, but gradually she could feel the floor instead of sliding across the leftover fat. Unfortunately Alek knew this was only one of many sections that would need this type of treatment before anyone could even think to just mop the floor.

Cracking her neck, Alek pushed herself to her feet . It wasn’t going to take care of itself after all.

”Hey Alek think you could do us a favor?” Whirling around to find Zsuska of the Tasty Flakes right behind her. The older woman shot her a grin and tapped the end of Alek’s nose. She barely held in a disgusted groan as she realized just what the woman wanted with her nose. She had managed to so far to block out the smells tickling her nose and the woman wanted her to sniff out anything that might be rotting in hard to reach places…

”Yes ma’am.”

”Hey do you mind helping me put this stuff back?” A young boy–maybe twelve or so–tugged on the back of her shirt in question. Alek smiled, ruffling the boy’s hair before following the boy back to the table where there was a mirade of different storage jars. Dried herbs mostly, though there were several jars looked to be different kinds of fats from animals.

Some of the herbs were familiar, but most of them were unknown to her. It wasn’t too often herbs were used in cooking, generally saved for large occasions like the Soiree. Examining the names faintly scribbled onto the jars, she hefted as many as she could safely carry into her arms before heading off towards one of the storage closets, her sensitive ears picking up the sound of more jars being gathered up and the boy following behind her.

Using her left foot to kick open the door Alek let her eyes scan the shelves for any sort of order–and knowing her hold there would be an order–before finding a mostly empty shelf to place the jars she had been carrying down. The boy who had followed her put his jars next to hers and for the next few chimes Alekxandra meticulously arranged the jars as best she could.

There were a few duplicate herbs that made it easy to find their homes on the shelves, but there were a few that were unmarked and Alek did her best to find them homes among the others as well. She made a silent note that she would like to learn more about the few herbs lining the walls–she had every intention of knowing their purposes as they ranked important enough to use during a large party.

The boy who had requested her help did his best too, but the poor boy’s height unfortunately didn’t help much. This wasn’t all that surprising for Alek, given she tended to be taller than most of the Vantha, even if it was only by an inch or two. Her mother had always teased it was easy to place Alek in a crowd based on her height and the color of her hair.

”I have a few pots and pan to put away as well. The clean ones are finally starting to outnumber the dirty.” It wasn’t a question if she could help, but Alek smiled all the same and headed back out to the kitchen. The entire area was already looking so much better than it had when she had come in. The group of Winterflames had started on the left side of the kitchen and were already half way across to the other side of the kitchen.

Humming to herself in approval, Alek followed the boy to the dish area and went about picking up anything that the boy wouldn’t like be able to reach.

”I think that’s about all that’s left. Good job everyone!” A voice barked out over the now nearly silent kitchen. Pans and tables washed, floor scrubbed clean. Any food that had been left over properly discarded or turned over for use elsewhere.

Alek had been doing some of the leftover sweeping of the main area as she heard the announcement and leaned against her broom in relief. There was nothing like a party, but she really really hated the clean up. Blowing out a harsh breath, she pulled her hairpin free from her hair and looped it carefully into her belt.

The hall finally resembled its former pre-party glory and Alek was all the more proud for it. Quite a few of her hold were heading out, probably to the tavern or commons, mingling with the remnants of other holds. It was a tempting idea, to follow and get something to eat that didn’t actually require her to cook herself.

The only problem she had was she really needed to get cleaned up. Despite all the work she had done cleaning up, she still had work in a few bells. She desperately needed to take a bath and maybe even get in a nap before she hauled herself to the commons herself.

Giving a few stray sweeps to the center of the room where the very last of the cleanup was centered, she found the tucked away closet for the brooms and leaned hers up against the far wall. Brushing her hair back from her shoulders she ducked out of the Crystal hall with one last glance over her shoulder before slipping out into the cold.

Grader :
For her duty in cleaning up after the Soiree, Alek receives a small, leather-bound notebook with twenty pages. The leather is old, frayed along the edges and a soft brown, almost orange color. It's the perfect size for a recipe book. It's not anything special but there is a small frame on the spine for a picture or a note as well as one on the inside of the front cover.
