Summer 25, 517 AV

By her second full day in Ravok, Sayana was itching to start making use of herself. It wasn’t only that she wanted to feel productive, but she wanted to fit in, to truly fit in. Whenever she had her arms out, she got suspicious stares and it made it so that she frequently covered up in a cloak, despite the heat of the summer.

With the desire to become better integrated, she sought out the Silver Sliver Tavern. After a couple of glasses of wine, she became acutely aware of the circle of empty seats surrounding her and the occasional dark glance and mutter. When she proceeded to subtly ask the barkeep about potential opportunities for information gathering, either within his establishment or for other larger organizations, she was met with a cold demeanor and a glance to her arms.

“Do you even have your citizenship papers like a good honest citizen?”

She was tempted to sway him with a good dose of hypnotism, but he wasn’t the only one in the tavern making glances at her arms, which she uncomfortably tried to cover with her cloak. If she had learned anything from Clyde, it would be a good and utter waste of magic to try charming the lot of them. Trying to maintain some scrap of dignity, she slipped out without another word.

Sayana tried the whorehouse next. She had been there before and she flirted her way into the building but the response was not much better. Although they would have happily taken her on as a client, the moment the topic of employment came up it was as though she was trying to seduce a doorknob but without having the key. Faces went blank and heads turned away, not wanting to have anything to do with her.

“With six arms, you’d be better off steering a Ravosala like a common slave.”

The insult set her teeth on edge. She was not a slave. She was someone who owned slaves. If any of them even dared set foot in Ahnatep, their positions would be so utterly reversed that… Except she was the one in Ravok. She was the foreigner.

Sayana quickly turned heel and left. She had known that the city didn’t appreciate her race. She had known it was going to be a challenge. But time after time, she found herself becoming more discouraged.

The Eypharian continued through the city on foot, winding this way and that by following the floating wooden paths and bridges of the city. A few more times she asked various merchants along the way. But her heart wasn’t in it, and neither was theirs. Who would trust a six-armed mutant to collect the secrets of their competitors, and not betray their own secrets?

She had made it almost entirely across the city without success when she finally sat down on an empty crate and gazed out over the vast lake.

“Am I not good enough for you Rhysol? Do you only care for the likes of mere humans? I once thought you were the god of freedom. To be able to do anything, without morals getting in the way. To be ambitious beyond all, without people getting in the way. To carve out a new life: chaotic, free and anything within grasp.”

“I would give anything to you Rhysol, except your city and its stupid citizens are a piece of…”

She abruptly cut off her sentence as a group of Ravosalas seamlessly glided into the dock in front of her. There was a certain degree of elegance as the people steering them assisted their passengers off and onto the dock. These were not like the simple boat she had taken the other day. These instead had a sort of refinery and grace.

And here she was, moping to Rhysol about her lot in life.

The Eypharian slowly got up and approached the dock with all the thin streamline boats. There was various chatter as the man in charged paired up customers with the boats and got them on their way. However, there were several empty boats tied up to one side and Sayana looked at them curiously.

“Excuse me, but are these boats in use or might they be up for sale?”

The portly fellow strolled up to her, and only briefly grimaced at her obvious race before covering up his error with a beaming smile. “Why certainly Madam. Here at Nicolo’s we have the finest Ravosalas in all of Ravok.”

This time it was Sayana’s turn to grimace as she recalled the insulting turn of phrase she had been subjected to when it had featured the steering of “ravosalas”. But despite this, she saw potential. As long as she could convince customers one at a time that they could trust her, or at least enough to take them on a trip through the city, then she could converse with them in a casual nature without ever raising a stir.

“How much for your wares, Mister…?”

“Nicolo. And good to meet you as well. We have your basic ravosalas at a mere 75 gold mizas. Our standard elegant ravosala at 150. And for those with true elegance and style, we have the luxury ravosala at 300 gold mizas. Now if you’d like customizations and…”

“May I see a sample of your elegant ravosala?”

“Oh yes, of course Ma’am. Right this way. Here on the left is one of our elegant models. Note the intricate carvings and the plush seating.”

Sayana looked over it with an eye of scrutiny. She very much approved of the seating, but what she noted even more so was how despite her race, she seemed to be treated well as a paying customer. Had she started off the conversation as someone looking to be hired as a ravosalaman, she suspected that it would not have gone this well.

“I will take it, on the premise that it comes with not just one pole, but two.”

“That will be an extra 5 gold mizas.” Nicolo answered swiftly without a hint of hesitation.

For a moment Sayana contemplated as to whether or not she wished to negotiate the deal further, but then decided to refrain. She had managed to come across someone willing to offer services to her, and she didn’t want to blow the opportunity. However she did add one final requirement.

“155 gold mizas if you’ll go over the basics of steering. My slave is ill today and I wish to get this ravosala back home without incident.”

There was a momentary pause of surprise. Either that the Eypharian owned a slave or that she was willing to steer the ravosala herself. But Nicolo gave a nod in agreement and the funds exchanged hands.

“First you’ll want to get into the ravosala, but careful not to tip it. Keep your weight in the middle. It’ll be easier for you to sit in the driver’s seat at the back because it’s centered.” Nicolo explained.

It took Sayana a moment for it to really sink in that the boat was hers. It was a reasonably expensive purchase, more than her horse had cost, and yet she had no idea how to use the boat. She stepped in carefully, yet despite her efforts, she felt it wobble beneath her weight.

“You’ll get used to it. And once you’re seated you’ll be fine.” Nicolo assured her.

She used her low and mid hands to steady herself while keeping a grip on the two poles by using her high hands. If the Ravokian noticed her extended use of her arms, he didn’t comment. Once Sayana had settled herself into the comfortable seat near the back, she felt things stabilize a bit better and it only tilted slightly as she shifted her weight.

“Now put one pole aside and use the other to push off of something.”

Even though Sayana had specifically intended to use both poles at once, she relented, and simply pulled out one of the long poles for use. Using her low and mid hands for balance, she grasped the pole in her highs and aimed the tip at the edge of the dock. With a good strong shove, she sent the ravosala sideways and teetering precariously back and forth from the force of it.

“Careful now! Don’t tip yourself over Madam. Try to give yourself more of a forwards thrust next time. Ravosalas aren’t good at going sideways.”

Her knuckles were white from clenching the sides of the boat, but eventually the rocking settled and she was able to feel balanced once again. However, another dilemma was a foot. She was very far from anything solid to push off of. As she reached, she could just barely get the tip of her pole to touch the wooden posts forming the base of the dock. With an awkward maneuver, she levered her pole sideways to get a very weak amount of push. But at least it managed to bring her in a little closer.

“Careful that you don’t get too far out. You might not have anything to push off of and you certainly can’t reach the bottom. As a last resort, you can push from another ravosala, but you’ll gain a nasty reputation if you do it too often.”

Sayana gave a slight grimace of a smile in response.

“If you’re feeling daring, many ravosalamen use a zig-zag pattern to move through the canals. They aren’t too wide and you’ll be able to push off each side as you move forwards. If you’re all set then, I’d like to bid you a very good day Ma’am.”

Despite his good nature, he seemed very much done with his lesson and Sayana simply nodded in agreement. There was only so much she’d be able to learn from words alone and he had certainly given her enough of a starting lesson for some basic maneuvering.

Sayana had to do a couple more awkward sideways swings with her pole to get back into a good position and then managed one good thrust to get her moving. She felt the eyes on her as she left the docks, but she didn’t give them the satisfaction of turning around. No, she was going to figure this out and make her way through the canals.

When she had ridden as a passenger on one of these ravosalas, the driver had made it look so easy. But now she was constantly scanning for good places to place her pole to push off. There was a wharf that jutted out and she was just within reach to give a good push. However, her ravosala was soon projected for a head on collision with a building. In a moment of panic, she swung her pole around to absorb the impact and her boat was bounced backwards, and stalled adrift.

She then angled her pole to push against the edge of the canal but also to veer the boat around the building. She was mostly successful, apart from the prevalent rocking of the ravosala that ensued, and also needing to tap the building with her pole to make the final turn. But it left her facing inwards to the very middle of the canal. A place she didn’t want to go.

Suddenly she recalled Nicolo’s last piece of advice: the method of zig zagging. Her boat happened to be lined up to go diagonally across the canal and with a good place to push off with her pole. Lining herself up and taking a deep breath, Sayana braced her pole on the edge of the building. Then with a big shove, she sailed forwards, skimming across the water.

The power and the gliding was exhilarating. That is, until another ravosala appeared out of nowhere, directly in her path.

“Look out!” She called without even thinking. Then she swung her pole around and used it to bounce off the other boat. There were dark looks from the riders of the other ravosala as they were jostled from the impact, but it wasn’t as bad as it might have been.

All in all, she had made it across the canal and now there were a whole new set of piers and docks and buildings to pole from.

To her left stood a tall imposing brick building. There were windows but no real platforms for people to step out on. She kept along the side of the canal and did small but frequent thrusts off the dark building. It was slow going, but it was controlled.

On the other side of the canal, something else peaked her interest. There was a beautiful display of greenery and people chit chatting around tables and chairs. Looking far more interesting than the tall brick building, Sayana angled her ravosala and gave a strong shove with her pole. Unfortunately, in the process the pole slipped on the brickwork and resulted in a pitiful thrust of the boat. She quickly attempted another push, but she was too late and the building was no longer in reach. Instead, she had to wait as the ravosala drifted into the middle of the canal and began to slow down. There wasn’t that much she could do, but she noticed that even though it had slowed substantially, there was still some energy left as it continued forwards, albeit very very slowly.

When at last she got close enough to the other side to swing the boat around, she was quite relieved that she hadn’t gotten stuck in the middle. There was a cute little dock with steps coming down from the establishment. It looked like a place to eat and had far more plants decorating the venue than most of the buildings in Ravok.

As she sat idling with her boat, a smartly dressed man came swiftly down the steps. “Rhysol’s Blessing. Ravosala! Can you take me to the Institute for Higher Learning? I have a lesson that starts in fifteen chimes. And I, ahem, got… delayed.”

The reason for the delay was fairly obvious by his guilty smile and the slight reddening of his cheeks, and she picked that up almost immediately. However she had no idea, in all of Ravok, where this place for higher learning was.

Before she could protest, he was already climbing into the somewhat parked ravosala and finding a comfortable seat. “Shall we swing around this way, or that way?” Sayana asked gesturing to the two directions of the canal. She hoped to avoid sounding naïve and unprofessional yet at the same time gaining insight to where this place was.

“That way, of course! I have to get to the other side of the city.” He replied impatiently.

What had she gotten herself into? But there was no time for that. The Eypharian aimed her pole and braced it against the dock. With a powerful shove, she propelled them forwards in the direction of the heart of the city.

With time being of the essence, each thrust of her pole wobbled the boat but generally sent it in the right direction. The young man seemed used to riding on ravosalas and was more anxious about getting there quickly than the less than smooth ride.

Sayana focused most of her attention on finding those good push off points. Often she utilized solid buildings or wharfs, but occasionally she took a chance with rounded wooden post sticking out from the lake.

There was silence between them as she concentrated her efforts on not getting stalled in the middle of the canal and he gripped the side of the ravosala with white knuckles, clearly tense about the time. Looming ahead was an array of buildings. Sayana hoped against hope that she wasn’t steering them into a dead end, but even if it was a fork in the canal, she’d have to make a decision. Or he would.

Catching his eye after a painfully slow spot, which clearly showed her lack of skill, Sayana reached inside to summon her djed. Pulling at it within her body and concentrating it in her eyes, she fused two distinct thoughts to her magic before sending her djed out like spurs. Does she even know where we’re going? I should give her directions so I’m not late.

Even though she didn’t like revealing her inaptitude, it was preferred that he came to the conclusion ‘on his own’ and sought to help rather than accusing her of incompetence. He made a funny expression, which she wasn’t sure what to think of, and then turned back to facing forwards in the ravosala.

They were getting closer to the series of buildings blocking their path and the canal was also becoming more crowded with other boats. She gave another series of small shoves, trying to keep up with the other ravosalas, yet they were sailing easily past her. Come on, come on, come on…

“I think we should turn left here.” The young man spoke up. Yet there was a hint of hesitation in his voice. Oh great. Neither of them knew how to get there with any certainty.

But regardless, Sayana was glad for the input and as they neared the intersecting canals, she found a solid building for one hefty shove to send them skimming over the water towards the left.

By now her arms were starting to ache. She had no idea whether they were halfway there or just a quarter of the way there. Time was still ticking and she was starting to wonder if they were going to make it before his lesson began. The Eypharian switched the pole to her mid hands and got out the second pole to aim it straight out like a lance using her high hands.

The young man looked at her with a confused expression on his face. “To avoid collision. It’s starting to get busy.” Sayana explained.

She gave another strong shove with her primary pole, yet it slipped off the rounded surface she was trying for and turned into a weak stutter of the boat.

“So was it a girl you fancied at the inn back there?” Sayana asked, trying to keep him distracted by the ever ticking clock and their slow progress.

His face reddened and he answered somewhat sharply. “It’s not an inn. I’m not sleeping with her. It’s called Café Fleurs. And yes, she is nice. And pretty. She’s, uh, quite something.”

Sensing that it was a delicate topic, Sayana instead moved to something else. “And your studies? What kind of lessons are you taking?”

“Reimancy.” He answered without hesitation. But then he added, “But this is a stupid architecture lesson. Bunch of drawings and numbers that I couldn’t care less about. My father wants to get me into something ‘practical’ but what could be more practical than becoming a master reimancer?”

Sayana gave a nod and a smile. However inwardly, she was surprised just how open he was about learning magic. Maybe Ravok was just different in that respect. Whereas she would prefer to keep most, if not all her magics secretive.

They were coming up to another crossing of major canals, yet oddly as she looked across the water some of the buildings seemed familiar. As she gave a hard shove with the pole, sending them towards the middle of the two canals.

“To the right, to the right!” Her passenger called out, as she realized a little too late that they were going to end up in the middle of the water with nothing to push off of. Suddenly a much larger boat came zipping by and Sayana decided to take her chances. The boat was almost straight ahead and she tensed up her left arms, holding the lance-like pole. With a loud thud, she bounced off that boat and sent them veering off to the right towards what she hoped to be the correct channel.

The Ravok bell tower began tolling. Dong! Dong! Dong…

“Petchers, my class is about to start.” Came the disgruntled voice of her passenger. “Faster, and drop me off just over there. I can sprint the rest.” He anxiously stood facing the water and pointed to one of the docks as she sought out another place to firmly send them forwards.

“Oh and here.” The young man shoved a handful of coins at her, which she took graciously knowing that he would jump out of the ravosala the moment he had a chance.

As they neared the wooden platform, Sayana felt the ravosala bump roughly against it. The young noble leapt out only a tick later, sending the boat rocking side to side as a result.

“Thanks for the lift.”

The Eypharian gave a brief wave, but already he was running in the opposite direction. Despite the urgency and the lack of real conversation, she felt rather elated by the experience. Even with her awkward attempts at steering the boat. She paused for a chime or two with one pole laid flat across the ravosala, keeping it stable against the side of the dock. She could see herself doing this more.

Curiously, she decided to follow after where she thought he had gone. She had never seen this institute for higher learning, and now she was no longer in such a rush. As she prodded the ravosala along with the pole, she couldn’t help but gaze distractedly up at the towering buildings of the city centre. They seemed grander, more luxurious, and far older than the other parts of the city.

Keeping to the left side in which she had dropped off the young noble, she followed the path of one bridge, and then another until she reached a vast soaring building surrounded by a tall dark wall. It seemed nothing like a traditional place of learning, filled with books, yet at the same time the slim spires and the protective metal gate gave a sense of foreboding. It was a secretive place to learn magic in private. And there was something else about it, that messed with her vision, making it blurry and almost like an illusion. Had Clyde learned his magic here? Or had he done so in Sahova? She missed him, even in the first few days upon arriving in Rhysol’s city. For a couple of chimes, she simply sat in the ravosala looking up at the ominous beauty of the place.

“Ravosala! Ravosala!”

Her head turned sharply as a pair finely garbed ladies waved her over. For a moment they almost seemed out of place, but of course, there were shops and stalls within sight and not too far off.

“Could you take us to the market square?”

Tearing her gaze away from the grandeur of the Institute of Higher Learning, Sayana focused on the two women as they boarded her ravosala. Her day on the canals had only just begun.

Very well done Sayana, quite a good showing on how to learn and use a brand new skill. I particularly enjoyed showing the accurate Ravokian attitudes toward an Eypharian. I also enjoyed your particular use of hypnotism as well. Over all, a lovely thread. Please mark your post in queue as graded.
