A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

Healing the Spirit

Fear was worse than the pain. Especially since she did not want to admit to her own anxieties regarding the situation. No one would storm her house. No one would storm Clyde Sullins’s house… would they? With two good arms, she could still be a fearsome opponent, even if they were both her lefts. But every night she slept with at least a couple daggers at her hip and one or two more under her pillow. If they came at her one at a time, she’d easily outmatch them. But if they used the ploy of surprise and numbers… She deigned not to think about it.

Her second, and more immediate obstacle was the boredom that awaited her daily. Shiress had advised her to get lots of rest, but one could only sleep so many bells in a day, right? She didn’t dare go outside just yet. Not in her current condition. So all that remained was… The Eypharian let out a long sigh feeling at a loss. Especially since she had sent out Shiress for some errands. But in the next tick, she sat suddenly as if struck by flash of insight from some god. The movement caused an equally startling pain in her injured wrist and she winced before curling her lips into a smile. She had work to do. Work that involved getting better at morphing.

For the past few days, not only was her body broken but her spirit was too. With Clyde not around, she felt it even more profoundly. Yet now she found the remedy for one, and possibly the other. In the back of her mind, she didn’t want to lay too many hopes as if it would work. Could morphing heal? Regardless, if she could learn how to change her shape, she might be able to completely and seamlessly pass as a human.

Part of her was revolted in her desire to truly appear as a human in both shape and form, whereas a louder and more insistent part of her wished to truly fit in and cease the glares and daily harassment.

The Eypharian made herself more comfortable in her seated position on the bed. This time she was more careful to keep from bumping or straining her injuries. It had been a long time since she had last tried morphing. Two seasons ago? At the time she had seen its uses and thought she would become proficient with it. Yet she hadn’t practiced once since the time of her initiation.

Taking in a deep breath, she closed her eyes to calm her mind. Last time she had needed days of fasting. She had bloody well not need that this time. Otherwise she’d be bedridden for the rest of the season. If nothing else, Sayana distinctly remembered Riyanna’s cautionary words. Don’t change into something silly, or you might stay that way for the rest of your life. Or something along those lines.

Sayana now stopped to look critically at her body. Or at least what was within eyesight and easy reach. She needed something she could safely morph that wasn’t too hard and wouldn’t be a huge detriment if something went wrong. She was certainly not confident in her abilities, not at the moment, but only practice could help her with that. Or a teacher she did not have.

Breathing in deep, this time to calm her nerves, she held up her two left hands of her uninjured arms. The irony of messing up her only two good arms was almost too great, but she convinced herself that if the change was small enough the risk would also be low enough. Her nails. It was simple, small, and they grew naturally. She inspected those of her left mid, and cleared out the dirt from under some of them. Generally she looked after them, but they could be smoother and longer.

The Eypharian rubbed her fingers over the tips of her nails and focused on feeling and understanding the material. Riyanna had said anything naturally occurring in plants or animals could be used. She identified the natural curve of the finger nail as it went over her thumb, and also the curve at its tip. She’d have to be sure that both were maintained as she lengthened the nail.

Sayana concentrated on bringing her djed to the localized area of her fingertips. First she would do her thumb, as it was larger and likely easier to manipulate. Using her fingers on her low left, she rubbed them over her thumb again and again as if drawing the nail out. At the same time, she tried to isolate her mind from body. In this detached state, she willed her body to change, to become elastic, and to morph from the administrations she was applying.

She could feel the tingling of djed on her thumb and ever so slowly her nail became malleable. Like some sort of dough or dense clay, it softened and she could start pushing and pulling at it. Drawing out her nail slowly, and pulling gently with her fingers, she concentrated on her djed and gathered it in the near vicinity. Pinching tenderly, she made sure that the natural curve was maintained, although it was slightly lopsided with her efforts. Then patting the tip, she formed the other curve.

One fingernail done, four more to go.

The Eypharian worked slowly, always keeping the feeling of her djed alive. It required her full concentration as she maintained a detached sense of being while at the same time molding her body. Her body was hers to control, hers to manipulate, and her mind was stronger than the physical constraints of her body.

As she worked on her index finger, she pulled and stretched at the finger nail. Slowly it expanded, lengthened with her manipulations. This one was smaller than her thumbnail, so she had to be more careful with the fine tuning. The slightest curve along the top and then a curve to finish off the tip.

Sayana carried on to morph her middle finger, applying similar methods and gently pressing and pulling at her finger nail. It was getting harder to concentrate on both the new morphing and maintaining the existing morphed shapes. It was like an itch at the back of her mind, knowing that the moment she faltered all her efforts might become undone. She was momentarily distracted, and she looked down in horror as she saw her middle finger squished wide and flat with unintentional morphing.

Breathing in deeply, she tried to calm herself while pinching the sides of her finger to bring it back to its original form. The skin and flesh shifted to its usual position around the bone and she was able to breathe a sigh of relief. However, in the process of the little incident, she had completely forgotten about her other finger nails. By the time she glanced at them, they were already receding to their previous length.

This was going to take some getting used to.

The mental effort was the biggest strain as the Eypharian started the process over again. However, in her poor physical condition, it was a welcome relief to be doing something active, even just mentally. In some ways, the morphing reminded her of gardening, or sewing. Not that she was any good at either, but it involved small repetitive tasks to complete.

Sayana smoothed out and elongated her thumb nail with more precision this time round. And always she kept half a mind on keeping her djed active so it would not revert back. One finger nail, then another and another. It started to get easier the more she worked at it, although her pinky finger was a challenge in of itself. It ended up looking more like a long hard claw than a finger nail.

Once she completed the first hand, her left mid, the Eypharian took a few chimes for a break. However, she didn’t completely let up and she marveled at the results on her hand. One or two nails looked a little peculiar, but for the most part they had been lengthened in a beautiful fashion.

As Sayana moved onto the next hand, it reminded her of crafting a disguise, or putting on makeup. In this case, she was quite literally doing her nails. It was slow, like painting a picture, but with the right precision and careful attention, she could make small adjustments to look like something completely different.

By the time she was finished, she looked at her hands with a certain amount of pride. It was akin to a craftsman admiring his work, or a bodybuilder looking in the mirror. Even though it was such a small piece of morphing, she had accomplished it, giving her a certain amount of pride in her efforts.

For the time being, she didn’t trust herself to attempt to work magic on her broken wrist. That would just be asking for trouble. But even just knowing that she had an alternative, a way out, a means to be someone completely different in this city of mere humans. It was enough. And it would give her new perseverance for the future that awaited her.

Sayana watched as her finger nails receded, like tiny serpents slithering back into their den. One success, albeit small, was enough to rekindle her spirits. But she wanted to try at least one more thing. For a moment she considered what other part of her body she could manipulate with minimal consequence. When the answer finally came, it was as obvious as the sky was blue. Her hair. And speaking of colours… The Eypharian ran her fingers through her brown locks and gazed at the colouring of her curls.

Hair was sometimes the most striking yet simple aspect of a disguise. Even a simple hair cut could dramatically change one’s looks. Although once hair was cut, it was hard to restore. That is, the natural way. She idly considered how easy it would be to grow or shorten one’s hair through morphing but then returned her focus to the task at hand.

Before she was to begin, the Eypharian rummaged through her belongings to find a small hand held mirror. Gazing at her reflection, she was reminded just how ragged she looked after being bedridden for a few days. Feeling especially self-conscious, she also grabbed a comb and pulled it through her tangled locks. The task of completely going through her hair was too extensive at this moment, but at least she looked a little more presentable.

Crouched over the mirror in her low hand, she grabbed a small lock of hair with her left mid. Concentrating on her djed once more, she let it move and flow towards her head and into her hair. The feeling was akin to the tingle before enacting a hypnotic stare and she willed the lightening of colour. In a repetitive motion, she stroked her fingers down the lock of hair as if cleaning it, removing dirt, or even ‘polishing’ it. With repeated motions and focus, she watched as it changed from a dark brown to a lighter auburn brown.

It was a small change, and internally she chided herself for not focusing on the final colour so much. Just focusing on the fact that it was not a dark brown. With renewed efforts, she concentrated on the light golden blonde she had seen on several individuals in Ravok. Like straw, or the sands of Ahnatep, she imagined the colour sinking into her hair and dying it.

Sayana repeated the process of pulling gently on her hair as she ran her fingers along it. With the sandy colour fixed in her mind, the new colour began to permeate along her strands of hair. Feeling energized, she began on the next lock of hair. Moving further into her somewhat tangled mess, she considered restoring a sense of order and imagined parallel strands of hair in addition to the colour change as she worked on morphing the next clump.

As predicted, the change in hair colour was striking. Yet it contrasted sharply with her dark complexion. Her face… she would need to do something about that. As Sayana took the time to touch up the roots of her hair near her scalp, she decided that her face would also need lightening.

The Eypharian propped up her mirror and winced slightly at the movement caused in her injured wrist. The light sandy hair looked almost gaudy against her dark skin. Using her uninjured mid, she started to rub small circles on her skin, almost as if applying a face paste. She focused her attention on the pale rosy colour she’d seen on others in the city. As she worked away, her skin slowly lightened in the places she concentrated on. This time, she wasn’t so naïve to completely forget about her existing hair, and part of her mind was split towards maintaining the earlier illusion.

Was it really an illusion? Or was she actually changing her physical features? For the moment, it didn’t matter, and she continued applying her djed like paint to her face. Her complexion lightened to something almost ghost-like, or akin to the nuit of Sahova. Too often she seemed to forget about the pinky glow, but it still got the point across. Not to be sloppy or lazy, she remembered to do her ears and neck, but stopped at her collar bone.

By the time she looked back in the mirror, her face was not her own.

It was strange seeing her thick hair parted in her usual haircut, her wide nose, her full lips… but all placed on a pale face with sandy blonde hair. For a moment she was tempted to try changing her eyes to blue, ones which would match Clyde’s own deep watery gaze. But caution with a pinch of fear calmed that desire.

At last, with the new face, she retrieved some old cosmetic supplies. A couple were dried out, but there was just enough moisture to apply some lip pomade and a bit of khol. Her left hand was less precise than her right, but she managed to trace out the curves of her lips and the outlines of her eyes. Beauty. Something she had long forgone in the ever changing world that was hers. And yet it seemed to make all the difference in the world. She touched up the edges of her lips and smacked them with a slight pop.

“Hello Miss Sophia.”
