Name K'irr Darkwater
Race Human, Svefra
Height 1.8m (6'2")
Weight 84kg (185lbs)

Birthdate 57 Spring 490
Age Twenty-seven
Origin Sebakem Ocean
Location Sunberth

----Profession Sailor
----Fluent Fratava
----Basic Common
----Gnosis Oceanus (1)

APPEARANCE

Despite his height and vibrantly coloured eyes, K'irr is the sort of man who somehow manages to blend in with those around him. He is slightly taller than average but rarely stands at his full height, more oft than not bent over a series of lines or casually slouched at a bar or gaming table. There is little about him that sets him apart from the average Sunberthian, let alone that may make him seem imposing - until you lock eyes on his face.

K'irr's eyes are the sort to give one pause; angular and set deep in his broad, rectangular face, they are a fathomless, iridescent blue, the colour shifting like the sea upon which he was born. They sit above a well-defined, long and sharply pointed nose which gives him a hawkish appearance. His lips are equally defined and full, framed by a neat, dark beard and reveal squat, square teeth when pulled into a smile. His jaw is wide and squared, finished with a matching, dimpled chin.

His body is lean and sculpted from years of sailing with broad shoulders, narrow hips and rough, callous hands. In fact, apart from his eyes, he is difficult to peg as a Svefra, preferring his clothes to remained undyed or done in rather drab colours. He also favours loose, layered pieces that often appear salt-stained or moth-eaten and worn in a slung-about, messy fashion, his tattoos and gnosis mark buried beneath. What little skin he shows is a rich tan and thick, dark hair covers his forearms and chest, often peaking out above the neckline of his shirts.

Furthermore, he lacks the extra ornamentation that is common amongst his kind save for a simple silver torc, his cutlass and a sad, beat to Hai wool-knit cap. It's rare that he's seen without it as its used more to contain his unruly, salt and wind-licked dark waves than to keep him warm and is always worn at a canter - the tip of his left ear always peaking out while the right remains tucked beneath. His hair is long and thick along his crown - the longest length falling just past his jawline, yet the sides and back are kept somewhat shorter and have the propensity to curl tightly, especially at the back of his neck.

In the end, there is something oddly warm and comfortable about him, reflecting in his aura. He smells of sea salt and slightly bitter Kline smoke and possesses a rich, chesty laugh and low husk of a voice. He is also not the sort to hide his easy, dimpled smile, as evident from the laugh lines and faint creases at the corners of his eyes.

Tattoos
Paradisa/Pod tattoo
The Darkwater Pod is known for wearing large manta ray tattoos and K'irr is no different. His appears inverted, the ray's snout starting at the base of his spine before fanning out to fins that wrap around his sides, following the curve of his hips. The long tail follows his spine and ends at the base of his skull. It is done in a tribal-like fashion with only simply black ink.

Tavan tattoo
K'irr's tavan tattoo mirror's that of his pod's, appearing on his front and done in the same black style. However, unlike his pod tattoo, it only takes up the left half of his chest and stomach. Like the tattoo on his back, his tavan is also inverted with the snub-nosed snout of the bullshark curled and bent under his bellybutton while the body and tail sweep up to his collarbone.

K'irr Darkwater

Postby K'irr Darkwater on January 7th, 2018, 2:04 pm

PERSONALITY

Although K'irr might not dress in the showy and colourful way of his race, his demeanour is distinctly Svefran and it shows in his rather laissez faire view on life, rolling with everything Lhex throws his way. He's a rather difficult man to upset because of this, taking everything on the chin or shrugging things off with a laugh. He's equally unmoved in other ways and most find it's difficult to surprise him, let alone get a rise out of him.

Despite this, he's extremely cheeky and curious, possessing a dry sense of humour and love of jests and niggles. Coupled with his seemingly unflappable ways, most that don't know him struggle with how deadpan he can be. His friends and family, on the other hand, know to take his words with a grain of salt. He's keenly interested in people's things, particularly those not tethered or tied down, and sees anything of that nature as free game when he does come on shore. This interest stems from his inquisitive nature which, in turn, extends to people. He simply loves trying to figure people out.

Then there is his love of cards, coins and dice.

K'irr's relaxed manner extends to his decision making: he always uses the flip of a coin, turn of a card, or roll of a dice. Most every decision he makes is done in this manner and he always keeps these items on him just in case they're needed. Likely linked to his need to gamble on practically everything under the sun, he simply can't help leaving things up to luck and chance.

It's safe to say that K'irr doesn't have a serious bone in his body, but this would be a lie. His casinor, Fortune's Folly is his most prized and cherished possession and he becomes a different person when sailing or tending to her. On board his ship, his cheeky grins and playful ways melt away, leaving an austere and driven man. In the end, he values his casinor above his own life, and holds the way of his pod and people sacred.

HISTORY

Born into an outer oceans Svefra pod, K'irr's early life differed very little from his fellow Suvan kin. He grew up amongst pods of dolphins, schools of fish, the odd migrating whales and his pod's revered manta rays and learned early on to respect the deep Sebakem Ocean that he called home. With that respect came his belief in Laviku, the father of all Svefra, and his youth was spent learning about and understanding the gift the God blessed him with.

He grew up a child of the pod, running amok with his cousins and the various other children that called the Darkwater ships their home. He knew his mother and father, knew of the strain and disconnect that existed between them, yet he was never left wanting. The Lia took particular interest in the cheeky boy and he fast found himself her favourite.

He grew closer to his father as he aged and learned to sail his casinor - then called the Sea Skipper - along the the Eastern Syliras coastline with the man's help and guidance. Although not upgraded to handle extended offshore sailing like some of the other Darkwater ships, it still served as the perfect learning tool and K'irr was quick to grow enamoured with it, hanging on ever story his father told of his adventures upon the dark-hulled ship.

His relationship with his mother was entirely different. Although not an unhappy one, it lacked the same depth and connection that he had with his father and his aunt and it chaffed on Wynne. Needless to say, she was quick to nurture his interest in her tarot cards when it arose, eager to keep his interest and company. She lacked the charisma and warmth that her sister and former lover possessed yet the two still managed to bond over the cards, K'irr devising a way to turn them into games, much to his mother's chagrin. And so his love of gambling, risk and chance began.

He had assumed the role of sailor on the Borealis, one of the Darkwater's two palivars, by the age of sixteen and had grown accustomed to the pods ways and dealings. Known to raid and harry trade ships that followed the Mura route, the Darkwaters often commandeered the more exotic and unusual items to keep, barter or sell. The Djed Storm of 512 changed everything, however, impacting not only the pod but the waters and cities they depended upon for trade.

K'irr's pod, like many other Svefra pods, did not suffer as greatly as those on land, having been warned of the impending danger by the many sea creatures that made the Sebakem Ocean their home. Although not directly affected by the storm, the pod found themselves dealing with the fallout. Cities they had previously traded with struggled to overcome the effects and the Darkwaters gradually adapted, turning to the risky business of smuggling and trafficking.

Unfortunately, the winter following the Djed Storm saw the pod lose K'irr's father, O'shen, after he disappeared at sea while doing a run. The Darkwaters found his casinor in near ruin, no doubt ravaged by a winter storm, and K'irr took it upon himself to take over the vessel and get it seaworthy once more. He renamed his father's casinor Fortune's Folly and made it his mission to get her back to how she was during her glory days as a means to honour the man he had grown to respect and admire so deeply.

It was during a rare time on land that he crossed paths with the inquisitive bull shark that would become his Tavan. He had careened his casinor on a beach south of Nyka and had paused to drift to the water to wash the sweat from his body when he found himself face-to-face with the juvenile. Wary, K'irr gave the creature a wide berth; he had had every intention of returning to his ship to continue his work when he noticed a small school of fish further up the beach and changed his course. He didn't know what lead him to driving the school towards the young predator but he decided it must have been fate's work. The two grew to respect each other during the period of time K'irr remained on that beach, working together while getting to know how the other functioned and, by the time K'irr was ready to return to his pod, the bull shark - now affectionately known as Walu - followed.

Now, with a casinor of his own and a renewed sense of direction and purpose, he is keen to leave his mark on the Darkwater Pod.

FORTUNE'S FOLLY

K'irr's casinor, Fortune's Folly, doubles as his home. It is a 30ft, single mast vessel that looked rather imposing when it was in its prime with its three head sails and single mainsail. These days, it looks a little worse for wear, the dark paint along its hull faded and chipped with large sections along the starboard side having been scraped off near the bow. The exposed wooden deck also shows its age despite how tidy K'irr keeps it yet the faded sails and lines appear in good condition. His heirloom, a heavy harpoon, is mounted on the bow and serves as the ship's main line of defence.

A small cabin is tucked snugly below deck and houses all of his personal belongings. A simple bunk rests on the port side, his blanket thrown haphazardly across it and chamber pot nudged up against the foot. A single chair and table rests on the starboard side next to a washbasin and stove. The rest of his items are stored neatly within his chest which is tucked away under his bunk.

Fortune's Folly is a ship best suited to coastline sailing. As its a living vessel, much of the hold is taken up by K'irr's living quarters which limits the ship's max cargo to 500lbs. He is not one to regularly take strangers on board unless they know what they are doing but, if he must, he is capable of ferrying a maximum of five people at a time.

Tavan
--♦ Walu the Bull Shark
Walu is a sizeable bull shark that became K'irr's tavan shortly after his father's death five years ago. Walu has only reached maturity and measures around 2.5m in length (8' 3") and is quite a heavy and girthy guy. He looks like any male bull shark with a noticeably blunt snout, grey back and white belly. His tail fin is low and long and first dorsal fin larger than his second. He keeps close to K'irr's casinor, guarding it like he's some Imperial Watcher, and has been known to surprise commonfolk with the odd jaunt up the Mudway or excursion into the flooded streets of the Seaside Market during high tide.

FAITH

K'irr is, at his heart, a superstitious fellow and, although he may not be devout of faith, he harbours a deep respect for a large array of Gods and Goddesses. Laviku is, by far, his patron diety and, like the majority of Svefra. His belief in Laviku is rivalled only by his reverence of Ovek and he pays homage to both Gods regularly through words, games and sacrifice.

Laviku
I need the sea because it teaches me.

MARKS

Oceanus
--♦ First Mark of Laviku
Marked individuals can first and foremost spot Otani readily. Otani will recognize them and often seek them out to play and communicate. Individuals with one Laviku mark can also drink salt water and have the mark automatically convert it to fresh water for ocean survival. Individuals know the direction of the sea if they are on land and how far away it is (in aprox miles). They also immediately recognize what the tide is, meaning if it is incoming or outgoing or in transition between.

K'irr's mark rests upon the inside of his left forearm and appears as an ever-shifting stylised wave. The colours match the deeper waters he grew up upon, an array of ever-changing dark blue and green hues that lighten to white frothy waves. The wave, itself, rests at the mid-point of his forearm and curls and twists; the rest of his lower forearm appears in a shifting gradient with the odd ripple and visible current or rip breaking through.
