Grave Business

71st of Spring, 518 AV

Hachia Koat was sitting outside of his small skyglass shack, crossed-legged on the ground, smoking his pipe. His old bones protested at the hard dirt beneath him, but he ignored them. A handful of okomo milled about as always; if asked, he would deny that they were his, for he was not bonded to any of them, and no okomo could truly belong to someone in any way other than that...but it was almost the truth, for they never strayed far from the old man's house. Perhaps it was more accurate to say he belonged to them.

It was a quiet early afternoon, and the old man let out a chuckle when one of the okomo stopped grazing to plod over to him, nosing at his face. He reached up to fondly rub its head, and it brayed softly, turning to look at him with a shining, intelligent gaze. With a chuckle, Hachia fished around in his pocket until he found a nub of carrot, and offered it to the okomo. It crunched up the treat, and seemingly satisfied, went back to grazing, allowing Hachia to lean his head against its soft, woolly flank.

The peaceful moment was interrupted by the sounds of an approaching traveler, footsteps crunching on the loose rocks of the faded path that led to Kochia's shimmering shack. With a grunt, he pushed himself to his feet, knees creaking with the effort, and turned to greet whatever traveler had come to Lhavit.

"Oh my," He murmured to himself in surprise, when the person finally came into view, his bushy brows raising somewhat in surprise. A gaunt woman was making her way towards him, her movements careful and almost sluggish; her skin was pale and ashen, and black bags stretched out beneath her unnaturally pale eyes. Without question, he knew the woman was undead...a Nuit.

She was not the first to come to Lhavit, to be fair, but indeed the race was not common in the sparkling skyglass city. Their unsavoury reputation proceeded them; they were one of the few races who were sometimes barred entry altogether, and if not, they were placed under strict supervision and watched closely.

Regardless, Hachia did not particularly care; while perhaps he had been different in his youth, he had long since cast aside bigotry and the stereotypes associated with different races. His job demanded it; and so he raised a hand in greeting, taking another puff of his pipe and blowing out the smoke before speaking.

"Hullo there," He called, polite enough to sound friendly, a smile crinkling his face. "You must be weary from your travels. Would you like to rest a moment before continuing up the path?" The okomo nearest him shuffled away nervously, nostrils flaring as the Nuit approached, and Hachia clicked his tongue and uttered a few calming words.

If the undead woman wanted to rest a spell, he would bring a chair outside for her to sit on and wait patiently and quietly until she deemed herself rested. Otherwise, or as soon as she had rested, he would coax the nearest okomo into calm with the help of a few more carrots, and begin to put on their tack. As was his duty, he would bring the woman up to the gates, and wait patiently. If the Shinya barred her entrance, he would bring her right back down again.

Hachia spoke to her in a careful voice, not wanting to offend; he was not talkative, usually, but he felt it was only fair to warn travelers of mistrusted races what they would face in the city. "Now see here, miss, I know you must have come an awful long way. Our city isn't exactly the easiest to reach. So I feel like I should let you know, in all fairness and ahead of time, that your kind aren't too warmly welcomed here. I think you can understand that those who guard our city are wary of Nuit, given your...current state, and what it entails."

He paused, the okomo now saddled, and turned, gesturing to the pale woman that she could mount the beast. He paused what he was saying to reassure her. "Don't you worry, these okomo are smarter than any horse I've ever met. They're gentle beasts. You make them a tad nervous, but she won't hurt you."

He offered her help if needed, then continued to speak. "As I was saying, don't be surprised if the guards at the top question you a bit harshly and drag you off somewhere right away...they'll likely be taking you to speak with someone higher-up to arrange your stay." That was if they allowed her in at all, but Hachia didn't say that.

Savis Maren did not take her approach to the city of Lhavit lightly. Nearly a century wearing the various skins and corpses of Mizahar had educated the Nuit in the plight that came about her kind. Prejudice was heavy, but not altogether undeserved, with the Nuit herself guilty many times over of the crimes she'd be accused of upon arrival. Not one to take to illusions of naivete, Savis was very well aware of the dangers that might befall her. The possibility of being thought of as an evil body snatcher was all too high, but she was sick of the travel, of the needless planning that her condition required in order to thrive. Perhaps, in Lhavit, Savis might find the respite she'd craved for years.

Time did not touch the Nuit's mind and as she set forth towards the city gates of Lhavit, she wasn't entirely certain just how many steps or how much time she'd taken to get there. Savis' pace was slow and deliberate, avoiding particularly large rocks and imbalances in the road as she mused, deliberated. She knew not what awaited her, but she'd heard rumours that mages were not merely welcome in the city but appreciated for the assets that they were. When a voice called over her thoughts, Savis lifted her head, the full sight of her gaunt expression visible to the scrutiny of Hachia Koat. The metre of his speech beset the Nuit with a curiosity. Savis tied her long, dark hair in a long braid that set upon her shoulders. Her posture was high and straight, her chin lifted somewhat with the assurance of one whose years far surpassed the skin she wore. Tilting her head somewhat, the Animator's curious gaze befell Hachia in turn. He was old, for a human, his kindly expression softening the Nuit's disposition, though it hardly showed on her facial expression.

"Greetings," began the Nuit. Her voice was thick like the gravel she stepped over, carrying a slight Syliran accent that she neither bothered to emphasize or disguise in her time away from the province. As he listened to his offer, she shook her head slowly.

"I'd much rather advance into the city. Though your offer is appreciated, I have a feeling that I will need the time," she mused. There was a rather frigid note to her words, one not purposely instilled into her speech. A private individual by nature, Savis Maren kept discourse short and to the point, preferring the wide expanse of thought in musings that were not contingent upon answers.

"I understand completely. I've suffered through this condition for far longer than I was a mortal and am well aware of the stigma. I'm certain, if your leadership is rational, that they might allow my stay. It could prove mutually beneficial," she added as a last thought. She nodded at the repetition of his warning, very well aware that her stay in Lhavit might not last. However, if she was granted asylum, she was eager to begin her work free from the concerns that plagued her in other places.

"Yes," she agreed. In truth, to be hauled away and engaged in discourse was her goal. She tired of needing to make arrangements and deals to earn her keep and continue her existence. It was dreary and tiresome, having her talents used to benefit so many others and never herself.

"If they don't question me, I'd be very surprised and seek out such leadership myself. I'd much rather be upfront and understood in my needs in Lhavit than need to take other measures to ensure my survival." If Hachia turned back at her words, he'd possibly notice the barest flicker of a smile set upon her features. It was meant to be reassuring and deflect the idea of threat, but perhaps it seemed darker and ominous by the nature of what she was.

Hachia nodded along as the Nuit spoke; she was well-spoken and picked her words smartly, and seemed reasonable enough. Satisfied that she knew what she was getting herself into, he returned her smile, though it was perhaps slightly creepy. Hachia lapsed into a comfortable silence as he mounted the okomo behind the undead woman.

The smell of embalming fluid was strong this close to her, and Hachia grimaced slightly, but made no comment as he gave a gentle squeeze of his legs. The okomo knew the path well enough that he didn't need to direct her. The beasts took off at a trot up the mountain path, hooves clacking on stone, and Hachia settled himself in comfortably for the ride up.

It took some time, but finally they reached the gates. "Easy, lovely," Hachia spoke, but the okomo was already coming to a halt. Hachia dismounted, stretching his stiff limbs, and helped the Nuit woman down if she needed it.

"Hail, traveler," Greeted one of the Shinya guards standing by the gate, and then lapsed into silence when Savis turned to face them. Hachia waited patiently, petting the soft blue and lavender fur of the okomo, awaiting the verdict.

Immediately, the two Shinya clustered together, speaking in urgent, hushed voices, not loud enough to carry over to Savis or Hachia. Finally, the one who had originally spoken turned to Savis; his mouth was set in a somewhat grim line, distaste evident in his gaze.

"Myself and another guard will escort you into the city," He said, briskly, his tone brooking no argument. "You will be brought to the Twuele, and speak with one of the Constellations, who will determine what is to be done with you, if indeed you are granted access to our city."

Clearly, judging by the glares they cast at each other, the guards had disagreed on what to do, and so had come to the compromise that was currently being explained to Savis. One of the guards up top disappeared, descending from the balconies to approach.

He nodded to Hachia, and beckoned Savis. "Come, Nuit. We best not dawdle."

Hachia, content that he was not needed any longer, gave a brief but friendly wave in farewell if Savis turned to look at him again; then he mounted the okomo, and guided her back around, returning down the way they had just come.

"Go on," The first guard nodded jerkily for Savis to follow the other one through the gates and into the city proper. Past the gates awaited the glittering city of Lhavit, skyglass shining brightly in the afternoon sun. People walked about, chatting as they went about their day; it was just past the noon rest, and most were returning to their jobs.

The Shinya that walked ahead of Savis seemed more friendly, or at least more polite, as he glanced back and spoke to her. "We're not usually so...forward with travelers, but, well...you're a bit of a special case." His smile was almost apologetic.

"I do hope you understand this is just a sort of protocol...for the safety of our citizens. No harm will come to you, rest assured of that; you will see and speak with one of our Star Lady's marked who reside in the Twuele, and they will decide what to do. At worst, you will simply be sent on your way again. You'll be able to ask any questions you might have there."

The Shinya explained patiently, as they made their way through the winding streets of Lhavit. It was a bit of a walk to the Shinyama Peak, and the sun had moved higher into the sky by the time they reached the towering building of the Twuele, edging from afternoon into evening.

Finally, however, they stood in the shadow of the Twuele. The other guard grunted, gesturing with his chin to the doors. "I'll wait out here," He said, bluntly. The friendlier guard nodded amicably, and beckoned for Savis to follow him into the building.

The Shinya approached the desk, which sat to the left of the entrance in the main room, and smiled at the woman sitting behind it. "Ah, hello. I was hoping for this lady to speak with a Reta?"

The receptionist looked surprised at that. "Well, they're quite busy...you need an appointment, as you know, unless it's something quite urgent." The woman peered past the Shinya and let out a small gasp. "Oh. I see that it is urgent, then."

Before she could speak further, a warm, feminine voice interrupted the conversation from the side of the room where the stairs lead further up into the building. "What's this we have, then?"

A beautiful woman with flowing golden hair and white horns extending from her temples approached Savis and the Shinya, Syna's marks evident around her left eye. "Ah," The Shinya man bowed deeply. "Miss Talora, what a wonderful surprise!"

Talora laughed gently, waving her hand. "Oh, stop all that," She said, with a smile. "I see we have a Nuit on our hands." Despite the words, her tone remained warm as Talora looked at Savis; her golden eyes were bright and piercing as she examined the Nuit. "I will take it from here," She addressed both the Shinya and receptionist, and beckoned for Savis to follow her.

The Ethaefal led Savis to the back of the entrance room, down a hallway. "Hopefully one of these rooms are free," She mused, glancing to the other woman. "As I'm sure you've gathered, we don't get many Nuit here, and we take certain...precautions." Her voice never lost its warmth, but it seemed perhaps slightly distant.

"You may call me Talora," She spoke, as she led Savis into an empty meeting room, motioning for her to have a seat at the table. "What is your name, and for what purpose have you come to Lhavit?"

Truly, Lhavit was a beautiful city. So much so that the Nuit did not mind the degree of suspicion she was regarded with upon entry. Even the mount that the old man and the Nuit arrived in breathed a beauty into the world that the undead woman had never seen. The expression upon her grim visage did not shift, but her mind was ablaze with the splendor that barraged her senses. The notion of Lhavit's beauty did not shift with their arrival to the Amaranthine Gates, but she did take her time in receiving it. Savis took hold of Hachia's hand as he offered his assistance in her dismount, quite grateful for his assistance and his professionalism in turn. Fair warnings were given and the Nuit was very certain of what was to come when she was confronted by the pair of Shinya. The initial greeting was rather official, then it seemed to strike them. They were not dealing with an average traveler and by their swift change of tone, the Nuit almost found a modicum of humour in the situation. She certainly didn't hear what they discussed, but the intention behind their secretive conversation was obvious.

Of course, Savis expected the discourse that erupted between them. Evidently, there was some debate as to whether she merited further consideration at all. Their discussion ended quickly and when they turned to face Savis again she was fully prepared for a negative outcome. However, when that turned out for naught, she simply nodded curtly. Savis Maren turned back towards Hachia in time for her to notice the wave. She offered a similar gesture before wordlessly following the Shinya. It was very clear to her that she was detained, held by the Shinya until her fate was determined. One of the guards referenced the Twuele and Constellations, an unknown term and a word that seemed out of context. Clearly, it was some faction within the city.

The pair broke apart and a single Shinya guided her into the city proper, but rather than take in the entirety of Lhavit she instead kept her gaze trained on the guard's back, following his movements, albeit slower. She lagged behind but sought to attempt to keep pace. Fortunately, the guard broke the silence when looking back at her. Savis Maren lifted her gaze to meet the Shinya's, nodding in agreement with his statement. Certainly, she was a special case. It was only made clear over and over, in each place she sought to make a home. The practice grew tedious and she hoped very much for it to end in Lhavit. When the Shinya finished speaking, Savis did not show much of a reaction to the statement. She did, however, make it clear in her tone that she was appreciative of his sympathies.

"I understand. I did not choose this existence, but I continue it with the understanding that I might be seen as something I am not. It is admirable, in fact, to be so thorough in the preservation of your populace." Words came easily to the Nuit, and she certainly took great care in expressing her thoughts succinctly. When it was at last time to part ways with the Shinya, he was offered a smile similar in nature to the one Hachia received before. Over and over, the Nuit was confronted with terminology she did not know. The word 'Reta' was thrown about and she was curious to learn what it meant. The answer came quickly enough, in the form of an exquisite creature that seemed everything Savis herself was not. Beautiful, eternal and marked with the light of the Sun, Savis Maren could not help but be enthralled by the being she saw before her. Beauty came easily to Savis' senses, an appreciation for such not lost in the ugliness that was her own existence.

The distance in Talora's voice was expected, and Savis heard it before and would hear it in the future. She did not mind it. In fact, she often wondered if it was a product of her own tone and reception of those around her. The Nuit couldn't help it and it seemed that mortals and luminous beings alike couldn't either. Savis took the seat she was offered. Her hands rose over the table and interlocked before her. The Nuit took a moment to consider her answer, offering a brief nod to the question so that Talora knew she had intent to respond.

"My name is Saven Maren, Talora. I have come to Lhavit for several reasons. It is my understanding that the city is very forthcoming in its appreciation for the arcane and I wish for a home that might take an appreciation for the knowledge I possess. Additionally, I hope to reach an accord and find an opportunity to perform the rituals that continue my existence without needing to take drastic action in acquiring a shell to replace the one I must shed." The phrasing Savis used was meant to be gentler than what was literally done, and she hoped to convey some kind of consideration in her tone.

Talora waited for Savis to have a seat, then shut the door to the room behind her with a gentle click. Grace written in every one of her movements, she withdrew the chair across from Savis, and sat down as well, crossing one leg over the other. Her hands rested folded in her lap, and she was quiet, allowing the Nuit to explain herself, golden eyes intent on her undead face.

Talora was quiet for a moment when Savis finished speaking, her brow furrowed slightly, a small and contemplative frown on her lips. She could admire the forthrightness with which the Nuit spoke, and her honesty; though the last few words sent an unpleasant chill down Talora's spine.

The word 'shell' when referring to the body of a once living person seemed harsh and cold; but she took a moment to remind herself that this was the norm for the woman sitting across from her, and who knew how long she had been alive? Talora leaned back slightly, reaching one hand up to press her fingers against her mouth as she mulled over Savis' words.

"Savis, I must say, I try to be impartial when meeting new people, but even I am put off by a presence of a Nuit." Talora chose her words carefully, speaking delicately; she believed in being kind, but that was no reason not to be honest.

"However, I must say, I appreciate your honesty. I am sure as someone who has a...longer life, no matter the reasons, you do indeed possess knowledge that could be useful to our city. Similarly, I admire your interest in seeking out knowledge you don't have. That's something we pride ourselves on."

She was still choosing her words with care, and her caution returned when the topic once again, inevitably, came back to Savis' situation. "I am...glad to hear you wish to avoid drastic measures when changing bodies. It is, of course, the main reason why you were brought here to speak with someone."

Talora let out a long, quiet sigh as she considered. Bodies were not a common commodity in Lhavit; the city wasn't as big as some others, and most bodies were burned as soon as possible. That's not to say it wasn't possible at all...Nuit had been to the city before.

"I have, what I believe, would be a suitable arrangement, should you be allowed to stay. If you disagree, I'm afraid there is no other option, and you will be escorted out of the city." Her voice was still gentle, but there was a firmness to it; if Savis disagreed with whatever the Ethaefal next said, she would find herself back on an okomo and heading down the mountain again before the sun was set.

"We may be able to keep a handful of bodies in cold storage for you until you need them. I must admit, I'm unaware of how frequently these changes take place. However, these bodies will not be for you to choose; they will come from people who have already died of either natural causes or injury, though we will be certain that whatever injuries they sustained would not cause harm to you."

Talora watched Savis closely for a reaction as she spoke. "You will have to let us know what sorts of injuries are acceptable, but most bodies will probably come from natural causes such as old age or illness. This is non-negotiable; do we have an understanding?"

She waited a beat for Savis' response. If she said no, then the conversation would simply be over, and she would escort Savis back to the main room for a Shinya to take her back to the Gates.

Otherwise, if Savis agreed, Talora would relax exponentially, and flash a brief but gentle smile. "Good. I'm glad to hear that. Now that we have that out of the way, I want to ask you...where are you coming from? What knowledge specifically do you have that you think might benefit Lhavit? You mention the arcane; do you have knowledge of any magic?"

The tone of the conversation seemed more relaxed, and Talora seemed genuinely curious as she asked, shifting slightly in her seat to a more comfortable position.

Savis Maren's cold, unmoving features painted the picture of calm but there was a measure of fear in her heart. First, the magnificent Ethaefal called her off-putting and the Nuit was filled with exasperation. She was not proud of how she acquired her current shell, but gods be damned if it wasn't the most beautiful one she'd worn in years. Vanity flared fire within the Nuit's mind and a younger woman might have shown it upon her expression. The undead remained silent in the face of Talora's scrutiny, a hand moving to brush a stray strand of hair that entered her vision.

Followed by her admonishment, however, was an admittance of utility. In Lhavit, a shining monument to the pursuit of knowledge, her age was seen as an asset. There was appreciation in her words and the anger that festered in the back of her mind evaporated. The next statement was somewhat less pleasant. The idea of needing to occupy elderly bodies was off-putting, to say the least. Her past was marred with incidental bloodshed to satisfy her desire for lovely corpses to inhabit. It seemed that the habit would die with her safety. There was no fighting what she proposed, for nothing was asked of her. The Nuit nodded as she leaned forward just slightly. It was difficult for the undead to take her eyes off of the Syna-blessed. It wasn't a physical attraction, but rather a fascination with the inhuman form that enthralled her.

The nod was followed by an easy, "Yes. I understand." She answered simply, implying that her agreement to stay was in spite of what she needed to say next. She was, however, cut off by the relaxed nature of the Ethaefal's voice. It was an ease that was appreciated greatly. The Nuit leaned back in her seat as well. A laugh escaped her lips, one of relief. It felt foreign, to hear laughter spill from her lips. The next questions asked were clearly conversational in nature. From her expression and tone, the Nuit figured she piqued curiosity with her reason for coming to the city.

"For many years I served as an assistant to the Animator that performed the Daek-nuit. My master had no students, nor did he provide lessons to me, but it was inevitable that I gleaned the process from him. Later on, he rewarded my servitude with the knowledge of auras and how to study them. When it became useful to him, I was taught to Glyph when such menial tasks became beneath him." Her upbringing in magic was not one she could be considered proud of, but the knowledge she had because of it outweighed shame.

"When that life was over, I studied very briefly in Sahova... I think I will prefer Lhavit. The citadel did not agree with me, but I gained access to Projection. If I am allowed the time to re-familiarize myself with the intricacies of spellcraft, my stay here will be quite productive."

Savis Maren did not pretend that the past didn't injure her. Her features adopted a tinge of disgust as her tale was uttered. The existence she maintained was not one she'd ever grow a taste for, but undeath was not the same as death itself. She feared the claws it bore, and her craving for understanding kept her switching shells over and over. Talora's proposal had lined up with her goals perfectly, and the candid questions demanded forthcoming answers. After all, Savis Maren had nothing to hide when it came to what she knew.

"Time provides many stories to be shared, but more so it offers perspective and tempers one's ambitions with realities. With the proposal you've offered, my needs are satisfied entirely and I can dedicate myself to craft once again," she completed. The Nuit's pale gaze looked directly into Talora's eyes to portray the sincerity of her statement. She abhorred the violence and chaos of the world. And, in truth, with the treacherous terrain and steep height traveled to get to the city, she doubted her safety if she needed to leave at all.

"If you don't mind my sharing... It is best for bodies to be as fresh as possible. Freezing a body for future use is acceptable, as it is difficult to determine exactly when a change is needed. There are extraneous factors such as condition and climate. Of course, I will tend to the body and ensure that it is suitable for the purpose. If possible, a line of communication might be extended when a death happens?"

The laugh that slipped past the Nuit's cold, blackened lips took Talora by surprise; she blinked her amber eyes once, but otherwise remained quiet, listening to Savis as she answered the questions the Eth had posed.

She mentally ticked off the disciplines that Savis mentioned as she spoke; she had no idea how skilled the undead woman was in them, but certainly they were useful. "Auristics, glyphing, and projection. Oh, and animation, I suppose. That's quite a list." Indeed, it was not overly common for people to know an extensive list of magical disciplines; even in Lhavit, most had their specialties.

Talora examined the Nuit's expression curiously as she told the tale of her life, no doubt severely shortened; she wasn't sure what to make of it, but she quietly filed it away for future reference if needed.

Savis' cold, pale eyes were unnerving to stare into, but Talora held her gaze without wavering; she seemed sincere, at the very least, and Talora hoped that it would mean less trouble down the line. Aysel would likely disagree with her decision, but it had been made already, and she didn't go back on her word. As long as Savis behaved, followed the rules of the city, and listened to the terms of their agreement, she would be perfectly safe to live in Lhavit.

Of course, it was inevitable that the topic of discussion rolled back around to that of a more unpleasant nature; it was, after all, the main reason why the two were meeting. Talora inclined her head. "I admit I am almost entirely clueless as to the...process, and so is what acceptable or not. You will be notified when a body becomes available, and depending on if you need it or not at that time, we can discuss what to do from there."

Talora smiled faintly, though it wasn't entirely amused, and said in a wry voice, "I have a feeling we may be seeing each other relatively regularly, Miss Maren. Though of course you may need to deal with someone else at times, and I do assure you everyone here will be informed of the situation; they will be competent and courteous, and if you experience any problems, don't hesitate to let me know."

Distasteful and downright appalling as many would find the situation, an agreement had been concluded, and Talora would not tolerate guests of the city being mistreated, no matter their state of being. The Ethaefal tucked a loose strange of hair behind her ear, folding her hands neatly in her lap. "I believe that is all, then, with those arrangements made. Do you have any further questions?"

If she did, Talora would take the time to answer them. Otherwise, or when she was finished answering any questions Savis may have, she would escort the Nuit back to the entrance of the Twuele.

"It was interesting meeting you, Miss Maren," Talora nodded to Savis. She wouldn't lie and say it was pleasant, for certainly the Nuit would be able to tell it wasn't the truth, and Talora didn't wish to disrespect her with such a blatant falsehood. But indeed it had been interesting.

"If you need any help finding the Cosmos Center, feel free to ask a Shinya to guide you, or give you directions at the very least. You can arrange for housing and exchange your currency there, and you may do well to inquire after a job."

With that last bit of advice, Talora nodded to Savis, gave a faint smile, and turned to sweep back into the Twuele, supposedly with other business that she needed to attend.
