40th Fall of 518

It was dark out as Taren finished his breakfast, packed the leftovers into his pack with a little the last of his fresh fruit for the trip. His leg had healed nicely after he laid off of it mostly for a couple of weeks and worked around the camp and fished but for now he strapped his sword and lakan onto his hip before he secured his pack onto his back. Fresh waterskins in the top of his pack to start with, he had been far too inactive lately and needed some exercise so he was quite ready to go as he took off at a run down the beach toward Stair Step Falls

It felt good as he started to run, he edged down into the surf as it rolled in and out, water splashed as the waves rolled off his boots, and the noise of it made sand crabs run back up the beach into the forest as he approached. The chimes passed as he ran, the exercise felt good, and worked any stiffness out of his leg. After he expended his pent up energy, he tried to slow down into a pace he could maintain for a while but failed and after no more then half a bell he walked again to catch his breath. He watched as the first of Syna’s light broke over the horizon and started to brighten the skies to the east as he reached the path that lead up to top of the falls.

He removed his pack, set it down beside him as he sat to watch Syna rise. It had gotten easy to overlook the danger or the beauty of the area around him and he needed to find the balance for his safety but at the moment he sat down to take a minute and appreciate the beauty before he set off into the jungle. The sky slowly lightened, increased in brightness as the chimes passed, and started to gleam on the clouds off the horizon and the light switched from shades of red and oranges He snacked on a couple of bananas as he watched the tip of Syna crest the horizon to shine bright waves onto the Suvan, as the sky brightened, it also showed a new threat as a storm was out over the Suvan and he hoped it wasn’t coming in his direction but only time would tell.

He pulled his pack back on as he started toward the path as he loosened his Kopis on the pack and removed it for use. With kopis in hand, he set off down the path while he cut back the foliage. He knew the work would be hard and long but should prove beneficial he hoped. Last time he was here the foliage had become very overgrown and since then it had only gotten worse so he put his Kopis to use as he started to clear the path again for more use. Within chimes he had a start to allow two to walk side by side and tall enough even for Taren to walk upright. He didn’t cut much above him as he stood a foot taller over most everyone in Syka, or the ones that he had met to date anyway. This cutting should last for a good long time he hoped but regardless it would open it up again for some time.

For bells he cut the foliage back as he slowly inched forward at a snail's pace, he simply tossed everything he cut into the edge of the path to get it out of the way so the cutting didn’t have to walked on. The sweat rolled down his back as he worked regardless of the cool breeze that was coming in off the Suvan while it pushed the storm inward toward him but he wouldn’t worry about that until it was much closer to him but it looked to be quite a nasty storm. He continued onward down the path, often he would work in small sections to clear one side then another while leaving the top afterward. When he came upon an open section it was like a gift from Wysar be able to walk forward quicker but he endured the work as his muscle groaned at him from exertion.

Many bells had elapsed as he cut his way up the path until his stomach reminded him to eat. Being outside of Syka, he didn’t care how often he ate but he pulled the remains of his fish out and finished it off as he cracked pecans from his pack to go with it. The sounds of the falls lulled him into many memories of Riverfall that he refused to allow himself the luxury of getting lost into them, however he kept a close eye on his surroundings as he worked. Most importantly he kept an ear open for the animals to use them as a warning, birds sang all around him most of the day unless he spooked them into flight but they returned quickly enough afterward. Small animals and primates often chattered at him from a distance or just sat and watched him, he payed them little attention so far as they seemed more inquisitive of him then aggressive but when they jungle went quiet he paid very close attention to his surroundings to make sure a predator wasn’t close by or worse like he was already being stalked. Regardless on how he felt, his weapon belt was always on his hip and the Kopis was almost always in his hand or stuck in side his weapon belt to pull fronds down and out of the way.

He worked his way up the switchbacks, thankfully they cut back faster as they had less foliage on them however he often had to drag any foliage down the trail to find a good place to discard it which gave his arm a needed break but also created more work for him. Once on the top he looked back down and was quite pleased with the work he had done, the trail was clear and easily seen without the need for the red ribbon he had from Juli. The journey took a long time compared to last time, at least double he figured but it could even of been longer he had no way of really knowing especially with the storm that had approached all day. He could see it still way off in the distance, a growing dark area and he could see the rain coming down over the Suvan but it approached toward him slowly, he knew he would be stuck in the jungle for it later today or tonight.

Taren cleared the area to the lake where he pulled his pack off and hung it off a tree to pull the fish line and hooks from his survival kit. He strung a hook onto the line but was forced to use the kopis to hunt for worms. It didn’t take long before he found a few which he grabbed one and put it on the hook, once on he tossed the line into the water and waited as the line slowly stretched out while it drifted downstream. Impatience and lack of knowledge caused him to really have no idea what he was doing, so as soon as it stretched out he wound the line up and threw it back into the lake to be swept slowly away again. This went on for many chimes before he wound the line up in frustration and set it down.

He went back to clearing a quick campsite for use. He dug a small fire pit before he chopped some quick firewood to cook some dinner if he managed to catch anything at all. He returned to his pack and pulled a snare out before he walked down the edge of the water until he found any kind of trail, like the small one he found now. It wasn’t much of one but it did show tracks of some kind of small animal using it so he followed it a few feet into the underbrush until he liked a spot to set up the snare which he did as efficiently as he could.

With a look to the sky he knew the clock had started ticking before the storm arrived. He needed to make some food if he wanted anything beside rations but of course he would also have to catch something first. Trap out and set meant he needed to start a fire and if he had any luck whatsoever he might even catch a fish. As he walked back up the bank of the lake, he grabbed the fishing line, he put another worm on the hook and threw it out into the water to drift away again. This time he looked up and tied the line to a tree branch so he could start a fire then prepare for the incoming storm.

He pulled the fronds he had cut near the fire pit, then searched around to gather a large pile of them, found several large limbs that he cleaned down for a frame, and a bunch of vines to tie everything together. He also pulled his hammock out and stretched it between a pair of trees but put it very close to the ground, he set his tarp on the hammock. He set the limbs into a shape of a frame and tied the ends together before he tied several long lines between the ends so he could weave the fronds between lines and make a slight shelter before he noticed the limb shook where he tied the fishing line from.

He scrambled over to the line and quickly hauled the fish into the shore, it wasn’t large but it was something that would do for dinner. He gutted the fish before he leaned it over the firepit and built a fire in the pit. He slowly fed the fire until the fish had enough heat to start cooking. Once he had the fish over the fire, he baited his hook to toss back into the lake again while he put his newly made cover on a lean over his hammock to try and keep some of the rain and wind off him tonight when the storm reached him.

The wind picked up and brought the rain in quickly, he pulled his fish off the fire as he snuck onto his hammock under the makeshift lean to he had just finished setting over the hammock. He sat on the hammock to eat his fish as the storm started and the wind howled around him. After he finished the fish he pitched the remains out and away from him and laid out on the hammock as he tucked his tarp around him so he was laying on it as much as under it as well putting himself in a little cocoon to keep away from the weather. He stretched out to take advantage of any rest he might get.

The storm raged around him as he slept in spurts, he lean had failed early into the storm. While it had fallen on him but with the light construction it only awoken him from sleep before he dozed back off. The wind rocked the hammock on and off as it blew into the night but he stayed dry wrapped up in the tarp as instructed. It had proven to be an easy cover for the cost and ease of carrying it, not to mention the fact that he stayed comfortable dry for the most part while under it. Overnight he finally awoken to find the storm had quieted down at some point while he extradited himself from his cocoon.

(41st of Fall, 518)

Once out and off the hammock he folded the tarp back up to set on top of the hammock so it would stay dry as he walked to the lake so he could see the sky. Night had fallen and he really had no idea of the time but he felt refreshed so he expected it was very early morning at least. The sky was still covered in clouds and the wind had calmed but still was angry around him. Leaves and fronds were littered everywhere in evidence of the storm that had battered the area around him. His pack was wet but the interior stayed dry as could be as he pulled some fruit out for a quick breakfast, everything had been soaked so he had no hope of starting a fire soon.

When he checked his fishing line he found another fish had been caught but he released it without being able to start a fire and he definitely wasn’t hungry enough to eat a raw fish yet. He also checked the snare to find it empty still so he stashed both the snare and fishing line back into his pack for use later when he needed it again while he made the red ribbon to mark the new trail with. The calls of the birds started to return to the jungle as morning approached, he readied his gear in preparation of continuing his trek. The once paved road up the hill seemed to continue back further into the jungle so he wanted to explore it further.

As he followed the pavers, he moved around and through the jungle with a more practised ease. He marked the trail as he went and often was forced to backtrack to find where he left the paved areas but they were more overgrown and harder to find the deeper he went into the jungle. He cut what foliage he needed to but not like yesterday, he had no idea if or where this trail may lead yet so he wasn’t going to waste time or energy for nothing. The day wore on as he travelled, he marked as went but the weaved to and from the water at many points and eventually went due west into the jungle as he checked his compass to not get lost out here. Although he tried to follow the paved areas he wasn’t certain how much he really did follow it or not, for all he knew he could of crossed multiple pathways but he managed to keep going in a generally straight line into the jungle. Everything went denser, darker, quieter, and even a little more suspenseful as he went, a feeling of dread crept into him as he continued on. The sounds of the jungle went eerily quiet until no jungle sounds came at all and even the breeze died, before long as it became ominous and as still as a cemetary that seemed to penetrate not only his bones but his soul or in his case both his souls as well. Every fiber of his body vibrated with anticipation of things that might happen as he watched around himself carefully.

Found in the Jungle

The oppressive feeling he had started having wouldn’t go away but only deepened. The jungle canopy grew denser, soon the entire area looked more like evening then mid-afternoon like it should be but that didn’t even slow him down. As he advanced onward he slashed at the nearest offending branches when his kopis struck something hard while the sparks flew from the impact. He reached up to find that he had hit stone that was covered in vines instead of more foliage as he had expected. He stuck the kopis in his belt to keep it handy but also loosened the sword on his hip in case he needed it, he wanted it to be free. He reached up and started to pull down much of the vines on the wall to see what was under it. After many chimes he found what might be the remains of an ancient wall under the vines, it was far from complete or even in good condition but he thought he found a doorway for a human sized individual, he definitely had to crouch down to get his large frame through it.

On the other side of the wall he saw that a large area was completely devoid of trees although a variety of small ferns , shrubs, and vines covered everything around him but everything was layered with one green or another to completely hide whatever is below, as he realized that the ever present bugs of the jungle wasn’t even in this place. His skin crawled as he made the realization. He pulled a couple of torches out of his pack and lit them with his flint and steel, he didn’t need them but the burning fire comforted him slightly as the gloom deepened and set them spaced far apart. He suspected evening was coming above the canopy of trees above him, had he been inside here that long? He had no idea for sure but he also knew he wasn’t ready to leave just yet.

WIth the torches set, he started to clear the moss and vines from some of the surfaces to see if he might find anything of interest. He cleared off areas of the walls, floors, or any area that caught his interest. Some spots were small trees that had started to take root in patches of dirt, others were some kind of stone but he really didn’t know if it was natural or made but he continued to look around. The chimes and then bells ticked away in the quiet as he looked around, the piles of his clipping grew in size and multiplied as he worked, when he finally inspected all the work he had accomplished he was no closer to any answers from before he started.

Tired, grumpy, and worked up from the anxiety this place was causing him, he sat down to eat a some rations from his pack as he chided himself for not bringing more preserved food. He doubted he could hunt or catch anything at all around here and he didn’t really want to try it so he just pulled some rations for a meal to be done with it. Afterwards he leaned his back against the largest wall that he cleared, set his long sword unsheathed across lap, while he tried to relax and possibly get a little bit of rest if he could.

Although he attempted to rest, sleep only came in small spurts but he didn’t get any real rest. Every time he fell asleep he had strange dreams that woke him up just as quickly as he fell asleep probably caused by the general uneasy feeling that he had since just before he found the place. He wasn’t sure if dreams was the best description of what they were as he wasn’t sure he had actually fallen asleep yet or not but the they were something that made him even more uneasy from what he already had been.

(42nd Fall of 518)

Eventually he gave up trying to sleep, took a drink of water, before he stood back up and started to work again. He went to an area he hadn’t started to check yet, he stripped the vines from the wall and floor as he walked, thrown into a heap away from the wall he continued around the wall. Suddenly something glinted behind him in the torchlight, closer inspection revealed a small metal coin in the corner of the wall, quite tarnished but still hinted of some metal. Taren took the coin over to inspect it under one of the torches, slightly larger than a miza, nor was it made of a normal metal he was used to, but as he rubbed at the strange coin some of the dirt rubbed away to reveal more of the metal.

He pulled his waterskin out, took a nice long drink, and then rinsed the coin with a bit of water from his skin. The dirt fell away to reveal a clean shiny coin with strange markings on one side. Pleased with his find, he decided it might be best to work his way back home to Syka so he packed his items back into the pack, made sure gear was stowed properly, and extinguished both of the torches to cool. He sat down to let his eyes adjust to the new darkness which he still found harder to focus on the smaller details around him. He shouldered his pack, checked his weapons and pulled the Kopis again to trek back into the jungle.

With his gear set, he crouched down and removed himself from behind the wall to be back on the path he had cut late yesterday. He found it hard to see his red markers that lined the path partly from the lack of sleep on the previous night, regardless he moved onward and away from this place. With a check of his compass to make sure he hadn’t mixed his direction before he strode off.
