78thth of Winter 518AV

”Hello, what can I help you with today?” The Chiet Inarta that came to Lani was unnervingly friendly for such a morbid place to work. Surrounding Lani were the starving, sick, and injured. Winter had taken a toll on the whole mountain, and it seemed the Infirmary was slammed. Lani had taken the most time she could to wait until she had no choice but to seek medical help, there were only so many things she was able to care for on her own, this was not one of them. She had already ruined her sheets and multiple pairs of undergarments. There seemed to be not enough rags to sop up the painful events happening in her insides, and although the twenty-two year old was not new to the horrors of menstruation, she had never experienced anything as painful or persistent as these symptoms. Getting from her dwelling to the infirmary had been just about all she could have mustered. Paired with the recent retraction of portions for eating, Lani was not in good shape.

”I bleed,” The Chiet seemed immediately concerned, dark brown eyes searching Lani’s immediately visible skin for cuts or wounds that could cause such a thing, and the mixed blood shook her head. Her hands had been cupping her lower abdomen during her whole wait, as if taking the pressure from the roiling cramps and odd shivering would make it worse. But now she had to relieve one hand of its duty to hold her together, and point at her affected area. ”Here.”

”Oh,” The woman seemed to visibly relax, moving closer to Lani and wrapping one arm around her shoulder to help guide her to a bed. It concerned Lani that specifying the location had relaxed the medical Chiet, because it had worried the mixed blood considerably more. She realized she was wearing her black Bryda, so the woman could not see the blood that had thoroughly soaked more than half of the garment during her wait. Deciding that the woman would see soon enough, Lani waddled over to the bed that the Chiet directed her to, carefully sliding onto the leather wrapped mattress that had a thin veil of cotton for sheets. She recognized it was for easy cleaning, but something about it made her uncomfortable.

”My name is Kirro, what is yours?”

”Lani,” The Mixed blood muttered.

”Okay, hi Lani. I’m just going to ask you a few questions, and if necessary we will go get an Avora.” The Chiet spoke in a slow comforting tone. Lani didn’t like it, because she wasn’t sure if it was slow because of her clear lack of grasp on the language or because the Chiet was trying not to panic her. The thought that she had a reason to panic and shouldn’t only made Lani begin to panic. She had worked hard to make her breathes even and measured through the convulsions that had been wracking through her all afternoon, but as she laid back on the bed they were coming in in short shattered gasps. Each breathe demanded more from her and took away from her ability to distract herself from the pain, which meant she was beginning to wear it on her face.

”So you’re bleeding? When was your last moon cycle?” The Chiet cooed carefully at her in Nari, and Lani winced, gripping at her abdomen and curling in on herself.

”Two or three moons ago?” She hadn’t normally kept track. When she saw the spotting she simply affixed a rag and continued on with her day. The cramps usually did not bother her enough to require herbs, and she knew she was luckier as far as women went, the moon was kind to her during her cycles. There was a fraction of a pause before the Chiet continued on, seemingly digesting this information, which concerned Lani. She had missed cycles before, and she had never really thought anything of it, was it reason for concern? Kirro was walking around the bed, pulling curtains for privacy, which also began to concern Lani.

”And how long do they usually last? Do you experience a lot of pain?”

”No,” Lani answered the last question first, trying to twist her head to keep her eye on the Chiet. The girl was opening up a small case with some instruments that looked nothing like anything Lani recognized. ”Three days, maybe four.” She answered honestly, watching the woman take out a strange cone-like thing and a spreading metallic object that worried her.

”Okay, and since your last bleeding, have you experienced any weird feelings? Like swelling or nausea?” The woman’s questions seemed more pointed now, and Lani scrunched her brow, folding in on herself as another convulsion wracked her body. The short scattered breathes weren’t helping with the strange pain and she ignored the woman while she focused on keeping the strange painful shivering down. The Chiet was placing her hands on Lani, one hand feeling her forehead, now slick with sweat, and the other pressing on the sides of her abdomen. It hurt, but nothing in comparison to the convulsion she was currently experiencing, which distracted her from answering for a few ticks. The Chiet yelled something, but Lani didn’t listen to it, clutching at her bloody pants as if it would help the pain. Within a few ticks she felt the cool relieve of a wet towel on her forehead, and there was more than one pair of hands pulling at her now, forcing her to stretch out on the cot so she faced up. It hurt but she complied with the prodding hands, feeling suddenly more safe now that someone other than herself was acknowledging the symptoms.

”Lani? Lani I need you to chew on this.” Something pressed against her lips, and she opened her mouth, accepting the strange textured thing. Willow Bark. Her mind told her. She did not recognize the taste, but the recent study of the medicinal plant had informed her it was commonly used to reduce pain. The convulsions had stopped now, and Lani surrendered back into the aching cramping and seeping blood she could feel, her mind becoming more aware of those surrounding her again. She could see three faces looking down at her now, all ringed with a halo of various shades of red and speckled with freckles. The brown eyed Chiet, Kirro, who had originally helped her was adjusting something at her hips, and as she felt her hips being lifted, she realized they were undressing her. The blue eyed Inarta near her face was addressing her, and she could assume this was the doctor.

”Okay Lani, Kirro asked you, but I need an answer, have you been sick since your last menstruation?” Lani nodded, lucidity returning as she listened to the Avora. ”Can you tell me what it was?” Unashamed, Lani’s bloody hands grabbed her breasts, testing the familiar swollen and sensitive feeling that had plagued her the past few moons. Apparently it was still there. Lani took the chewed bark from her mouth, pinching it in one hand and swallowing the icky taste before speaking.

”Pain here, sick in stomach, tired all time.” She spoke the things that had worried her earlier but that she had not found worth visiting the infirmary. This information seemed to tell the Avora something, and she picked up the instrument that Kirro had been about to use, placing the large end of the cone on Lani’s lower abdomen, and pressing her ear against the other end. The Avora’s assistants seemed to understand what she was doing and stopped as soon as they got her bottoms completely off of her, watching the Avora for some sign that told them what she heard. Taking in the atmosphere, Lani did the same, trying to keep her breathing even and watching for some sort of reaction.

The doctor was likely practiced in not revealing anything with her face, because the observant mixed blood saw no sign of any emotion when she removed her ear from the cone and put it on a table nearby. She turned to the two chiet, and whistled something so quick in Nari that Lani didn’t catch it. Not wanting to miss information, Lani focused on her Auristics. It was difficult with the pain, but she could feel the worry that emanated from the three people in the small isolated section with her. It was an overwhelming emotion, and Lani immediately gave up on concentrating on the magic, instead letting the passive sense feed her information and opting to ask directly.

”What? What was that?” She asked, not liking that the doctor was not consulting her. Wasn’t she the sick one here? The bark was still clutched in her hand, and she didn’t feel as though it was making a difference. She wanted alcohol. Or drugs.

”Don’t worry dear, we will tell you everything you need to know. You have to trust us now.” The Avora spoke in the same strange soothing tone that annoyed Lani, and moved to the bottom of the bed where Lani was bare from the waist down. Following her with black eyes, Lani was able to see that her pants were not nearly as soaked with blood as she thought, but a strange watery feeling was still over them, almost as if she had wet herself. The thought embarrassed and terrified her but none of the Inarta in the small curtained off room seemed bothered or at all noticing it. They were jabbering at each other in swift Nari with words much larger than she could understand, even the smaller ones seemed unfamiliar to her. They seemed to talk to one another for a few chimes, and Lani waited patiently, trying to keep down the pain and discontent with not knowing what was happening.

Again a convulsion began to rack through her, and Lani moaned, her hands reached for her abdomen to press against it again. Someone stopped her, and she writhed underneath them, trying to grasp at her lower stomach as if it would help. Nari was being spoke, and then something else was being pressed just under her lips.

”Drink.” She heard the Nari command, and someone was tilting her head up so she could do so. Drugs Her mind informed her and Lani was quick to take a large gulp, getting down as much of the thick disgusting syrup as she could. It reminded her of the smell of raw fished mixed with chalk compacted into a powder. She grimaced, but forced it down, happy to surrender higher thought and let these redhaired savages take care of her while the pain racked through her.

The convulsion had not yet stopped when Lani could feel the effect. The world seemed to lift and swirl around her, taking on a hallucinogenic filter. The pain that the convulsions racked her with and the dull aching cramps that were consistent were still felt with the full force, but Lani found she didn’t care as much. It was painful, so what? To Lani the world slowed and twisted, light became brighter and shadows became darker as the three people worked on her. She could feel them moving her legs around, spreading them, propping them on something, and then prodding at the area between. There were sharp uncomfortable pains inside of her, and she knew that the one part of her body that was reserved for pleasure, and pleasure alone, was feeling pain like it had never felt before. Cold metal devices scraped at her insides, and although someone kept changing the wet towel over her head, pressing cold fingers into her sweaty neck to check her pulse, there was no comfort offered.

Their excavation of her insides seemed to take forever and no time at all. Every time she closed her eyes to surrender to the strange hypnotic drug that told her pain didn’t matter, someone was tapping on her face and pulling at her lids, annoying her until she opened them again. They said something to her in Nari that felt like a mother chastising her child, but Lani wasn’t entirely sure what the garbled language said any more. She thought they wanted her to keep her eyes open. Fine, she could do that. Her black gaze watched the decorative stained glass ceiling above her, pain and pressure accompanying the strange drug-induced waking dream that filled her everything. After a while Lani began to realize they were done. Someone was wiping her down, and she could feel the cool caress of water around her thighs and hips. She could hear the sharp curse of scissors over her top garment, and then someone was cleaning her there too.

Strong arms lifted the tripping foreigner onto a stretcher, and she had the vague idea she was being carried somewhere. But when she arrived, she was just looking at the decorative ceiling from a different part of the room. The same uncomfortable mattress with thin sheets was beneath her, but this one was not covered with her blood and sweat.

Someone caressed her cheek kindly, and Lani reached for it, but by the time her hands found her face, it was only her own skin she felt underneath her. The world was dimming once more as shadows and light did not seem so at odds with one another. Lani was beginning to recognize that there was a red-headed girl that was peaking around her curtains every few ticks, sweeping through the small isolated cot, checking her temperature, her pulse, forcing her to drink water, and tucking the sheets around her closer. It was only on the fourth time of the repetitive check in that she realized it was not every few ticks, but about once a bell if not less. She thought the time between was getting longer, but as she watched the sun’s evening glare filter through the stained glass, she realized it was a by-bell check in.

Lani felt herself coming to, and although rational thought wanted her mind to swirl and her mouth to ask what had happened, a strong fatigue was settling over the mixed blood, and the young woman found herself drifting off to sleep, comforted by the moans of the sick and the jabbering of the medicinal workers that filled the room just outside her little curtained sanctuary. Whatever had happened was done, and now that she was allowed to sleep, she was going to.

By the time Lani found herself rising from her dreamless slumber, she recognized that one of the curtains surrounding her had been adjusted slightly. There was a gap from someone moving it around and not putting it quite back enough. The infirmary was dark now. She could see the soft glow of candles on her peripheral, but the atmosphere sang her the song of many bodies slumbering, snoring and muttering to themselves, turning in their sheets and moaning their pain away under the dimmed veil of unconsciousness. She could hear a few people walking and moving around, but the activity from earlier that day was nearly void by this time of night. Lani reached up to scratch the sand from her eyes, saddened to find that the moon did not penetrate the stained glass ceiling nearly as well as the sun had. Lani liked Syna, she just liked Leth better.

It was then that she also became aware of the pain. Her lower abdomen and space between her legs screamed with soreness and pain. As far as she could tell the cramps and convulsions had ceased, leaving damaged and sore muscles and organs in their wake. Whatever the Inarta had done to her also danced like fire in her crotch, as if someone had literally scraped away her insides as she had imagined they had been doing.

”Lani?” The mixed blood’s head turned to the side, recognizing her name but not the voice. In the dark she could faintly see Narth’s hulking figure and beard, but she immediately realized she had never heard her name on his lips, and so did not recognize the tone of his voice as readily. A soft smile seeped into her lips at the comforting sight of the man. Everything had been so painful and unfamiliar. The Inarta had not been unkind to her, but they had not been familiar with her either. It didn’t take long for her to feel Narth’s warm calloused fingers on her temple, down her cheek, cupping her face, caressing her shoulder. He did not kiss her or touch her inappropriately, but she could feel him petting her all over, somehow avoiding the pained areas. The soft fingers in her hair cooled the pain that she could no longer ignore and the mixed blood closed her eyes to try and surrender herself to the comforting touch. She felt herself drifting into Nysel’s grasp yet again, although the soft Nari words that Narth spoke before her release into the sanctuary of the unconscious sang in her brain. ”You’re okay, you lost the baby, but you’re okay.”
