23rd Day of Winter, 518 AV, 18th Bell, Outside Ravok’s Northern Outpost

Don’t you move, you little petcher…

The pale tiger kept low to the ground, a plump, juicy rabbit well within her sights. Frankly, Zavya was amazed that the little animal hadn’t smelled her and run off—that seemed to be the case all too often in many of her recent hunting excursions. She had managed to keep herself and her human companion fed well enough so far, but the least she could be grateful for was the mild temperatures. Had these hunting trips been in the dead of a true winter, she knew they would not have fared so well. Or at least, that’s what she assumed. The young Kelvic had never known a real winter.

Its back was turned, long ears held high and at alert. Golden eyes roamed her target to assure herself it was unaware of her presence, in spite of its seeming vigilance. She shifted a paw to test its reaction, and sure enough, it didn’t even move.

I’ve got you now.

Had the tiger’s lips been capable of smiling, they would have been, but as it was, she still exuded an aura of smug satisfaction. Muscles coiling to pounce, she leapt, landing behind the rabbit with a shuddering of the earth. The poor thing hardly had a moment to react before bone-crushing jaws had closed around its neck, snapping its spine and stealing the spark from its eye.

The hot taste of blood filling her mouth was Zavya’s ecstatic reward, a grumble of contentment vibrating her throat. Lying down under the nearest tree, the cat started digging into her prize. Her maw was stained red, bones snapping beneath her teeth and tail twitching happily behind her while she ate. Nothing compared to the taste of fresh-killed meat; she would never understand humans’ penchant for cooking and preserving. Why couldn’t they understand the best flavor was the freshest?

Wrapped up in her meal as she was, the tigress was hardly aware of her surroundings, so a rustle in the tree overhead gave the Kelvic pause. A barbed tongue cleaned the remnants of blood from her teeth as she slowly stood, instantly on guard. As silently as she could, she backed up, golden eyes staring up into the leaves to see if she could decipher where the sound had come from.

There! A lumpy shape, barely distinct from the branches around it. Zavya lifted her nose to the air to try to catch a better scent, but it was certainly nothing she recognized. Narrowing her eyes, she looked closer and made out the distinct pattern of fur covering a form unlike anything she’d ever seen. Monster? Friend? …Food?

A soft growl rumbled in her chest as she approached the trunk. Staring upward, she abruptly struck the bole of the tree, unsheathed claws raking bark from its surface. Hoping to startle the creature down, she struck again and growled louder, lips peeling back and exposing dagger-like fangs. Zavya’s experience with the unknown rarely boded well, and she had no intention of letting this thing—whatever it was—catch her unawares. She’d climb the damn tree if she had to.

16th Bell, Outside Ravok’s Northern Outpost

Discovery was an adventure that Itt never failed to follow— that is if he was able to notice it in the first place and catch up to it after that. If time was on his side, Itt would follow in the shadow of curiosity and learn all the world had to offer. Even the smallest of things were of intrigue to the brown eyes gazing upon this vast world.

For instance, these past couple days, Itt had started gaining an income for the first time; it was an unofficial official job. He would take pieces of paper, small boxes, or people's words to another person and then they would give him Mizas! All he had to do was repeat after them, go to the destination they circled on the map, repeat the words to the person they described (which frankly was the hardest part considering people were exceptionally harder to find than Itt would have thought) and then return to the first person. Free Mizas! It's a win-win! They seemed happy to hear the words he said, or get the jars of honey or jam or dried leaves, and he was happy getting money to buy food.

As great as leaves were, they didn't make for a very nutritious diet. He could eat the leaves off of trees and bushes in the city, but berries on the lakeside were better. But the trip to the lakeside was too long to take daily, so buying food from that giant group of people constantly screaming about food and numbers was a great alternative. He's had more energy than he's ever felt before!

Itt took this energy from his new diet to explore the surrounding area of the Northern Outpost. He had earlier sent a message to a man named "Krahk", who laughed at his words and sent him on his way. Itt had no idea what it was that he told the man to get such an uproar, as he still was fumbling with their language, but the man's smile put a smile on his own face. It must have been pretty funny.

He left the man and his cart and went on his way outside the outpost, looking up at the foreign tree canopy. He had been meaning to get more familiar with the local food and flora, considering this city and lake was drastically different than his home tree in Syliras. Since he was already here, he figured he shouldn't waste time and get to looking around. He'd return to the city in a few bells.

The Kelvic didn't wander too far from the outpost before looking up a sturdy looking tree with some low hanging branches. He gripped the lowest hanging arm with both hands and a hop, the tree branch wavering with the sudden weight. Itt stared at the trunk of the tree with wide eyes, falling still in hopes that the tree would settle down and allow him to continue climbing without breaking. The tree obviously agreed, Itt smiled and hoisted his legs upward, pulling his human body onto the branch.

Straddling the living log, the two-year-old reached for the next step, gradually pulling himself up and up and up into the midsection of the forest dweller. It smelled significantly different than the trees at home. It smelled more— mmm, wild? He supposed? The trees at home smelled like horses and squirrels and other local animals. But these trees smelled of animals he's never smelled before.

This was both exciting an terrifying at the same time.

On the one hand, if it were new birds, it was wonderful. He figured there were more birds to see in the world than the small collection back at home. But if these new animal scents were predators, then that was a big no-no. A very big no-no.

Despite his growing concern, Itt gathered that he was safe in the trees. There weren't many predators who roamed the canopy from what he knew of, so most of the danger was likely on the ground. So as long as he stayed up here, among the leaves, he was perfectly safe.

Itt took a deep breath of the fresh forest air and grabbed a leaf from the branch above him, stuffing it into his mouth as his other hand gripped the bottom of his shirt. He chewed the leaf with a lazy smile, stripping his shirt and eventually his pants. Huh, what bitter leaves. They had a sort of— he smacked his lips and teeth— a pokey sort of taste. Not smooth like the ones at home. But it was still good.

Hanging his clothes from the branch he used as a support, Itt made sure his well-earned miza was secure in one of the pockets. Then finally, with the slight breeze nipping his second pair of cheeks, Itt shifted in his usual flash of light, gripping the tree branch with his new, long claws.

Off he goes! Towards adventure! To discovery! To food!

———————————————

18th Bell

Traversing the trees through overlapping branches, Itt had made relatively significant progress in his travels. He tasted many of the trees and smelled many new scents, coming to the conclusion that a lot of the trees were the exact same. There were a few he came across that were different, but they were visibly so, so he didn't need to taste them to tell. Though he tasted them anyway because that was what he was here for.

He was hanging upside down from a branch, having a quick rest when he heard a rustling of leaves from down below. Not entirely unusual, but Itt was curious enough and looked down.

Aaaaaw, it was a cute big ear! Hi little big ear! Itt knew the big ear couldn't hear him, and even if it could it couldn't understand him, but it made Itt feel good to still say hi. The big ear probably didn't eve-

WHAAAAAAT IS THAT?!

Itt froze with his brown eyes wide, staring at the gold and white blur of fur from above, the big ear being nothing more than red paste. His tiny heart pounded in his chest, the fresh scent of blood and unfamiliar musk berating his nose. Itt had smelled traces of this scent earlier, but he supposed he got lost in thought or got too tired to notice how strong it had become.

He was just glad that he wasn't that big ear. Poor little guy. He hoped he had a happy life.

Itt refused to move for some time, a few chimes passed and the... big eater, as that is what Itt decided to call it, didn't move. It ate right there in front of him, which made Itt uncomfortable. Not only was this big eater— well, big, but it didn't seem like that tiny little big ear was going to fill it up.

Eventually, the crunching of the fragile bones became too much for the sloth, and Itt slowly, ever so gently, ever so delicately like how he imagined a tiny baby bird would reach for food, tried to grab the branch to the next tree.

Carefully now Itt. Just gently transfer your weight. Like a fea-

SNAP

Oh no.

Itt's everything stopped and watched the top of the branch tumble through the other leaves and to the ground. The flash of golden eyes shook him to his core, he couldn't even feel his heart beating. If his digestive system wasn't so slow, he would have literally pooped himself. The eyes searched and searched the canopy. It didn't seem to see him, it couldn't see him, he was fine, there was no way it could see hi- it was looking at him, oh no, it saw him, oh no, oh no, oh no, no, no, no!

Within moments, the big eater was pounding the tree. That was no way to treat trees! But if that's what it wanted to do instead of eating him then it was totally welcome to. After all, there was no way it was going to bring the whole tree down.

The tree trembled.

Okay, maybe it could bring the whole tree down.

Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope! Itt clung to the branch for dear life, hoping with all of his might that he could hold on. Luckily for him, sloths have been known to cling to trees even after death, so until the branch broken or the big eater climbed up, there was no getting the terrified sloth out of the tree.

The animal—whatever it was—showed no signs of leaving the tree, a growl rumbling in the depths of Zavya’s chest. Of course it didn’t come down… why would it? Were she in its position, she wouldn’t either. What sane creature would willingly walk into the jaws of certain death? The Kelvic gave a very uncatlike shrug of her shoulders and gazed along the trunk of the tree. Oh, well. If it wouldn’t come down, she’d just have to go up.

Claws unsheathed, she wrapped her front legs around the bole and dug her paws into the bark, tugging so that she might bring her back legs up, as well. The effect was in no way graceful, but it served her purpose well enough—the tigress slowly shimmying up the trunk inch by careful inch. When she was within reach of the first branch, her back legs lost their purchase and she slipped a few feet. Golden eyes widened in alarm before she caught herself again, clinging desperately so that she didn’t fall all the way to the ground.

Large face set in determination, Zavya started clawing her way up again, this time with a little more success. She scraped and scrambled more than a few times, but she refused to let up. Finally reaching the first branch, she tested its strength with one paw by pushing down to see if it would crack. Finding it sturdy enough, she bore more of her weight on the limb and pulled until her body rapidly followed. Propelling herself from one set of branches to the next, she did her best not to look down and to ignore the tree’s trembling when it shook from her weight.

A few more chimes of this and she spotted her quarry, a fuzzy little thing with no sort of face that she recognized. What the hell was this long-armed, big-eyed mess of a critter? His scent wasn’t particularly appealing, either, the tigress nearly instantly coming to regret her effort in climbing all the way up the tree for an animal that wasn’t even remotely appetizing. She momentarily thought about giving up the chase altogether before peering a little closer at what would have been her prey.

Underneath the slightly moldy scent was another smell, one that rang a bell of familiarity. Upon getting a clearer view of the creature, Zavya finally realized why the scent was so familiar even while it was so foreign. He was a Kelvic! This thing was another Kelvic! What was he doing out here? And how?

Even if her intentions in following the animal had changed, of course, he had no way of knowing this, and the terrified creature was doing his best to evade her fangs and claws as if his life depended on it. Which, admittedly, up until a few ticks ago, it had. Zavya had never been that great with first impressions.

Clinging to the branch beneath her for all she was worth, a near blinding swirl of light permeated the foliage and replaced the massive feline with a scarred woman of a much more reasonable size. Zavya gulped as she looked down at the considerable distance between herself and the ground before jerking her gaze back to the fleeing Kelvic. “Wait!” she cried out in a raspy voice, one arm letting go of the branch to reach out toward the tiny fuzzball. “Wait, come back!”

Einar likely would have scolded her for revealing herself to a stranger in such a way, but then he wasn’t here, was he? Besides, no matter her master’s determination, she heavily doubted he would send another Kelvic looking for her. Zavya knew Ryker better than she knew anyone. He’d never put such trust in a non-human, particularly a Kelvic. To him, they were nothing more than dumb animals and only worthy of his regard if they could be used for something. And even if he had thought to send a Kelvic after her, it never would have been an animal like this, not to retrieve a tiger. Her master was many things, but stupid was not one of them.

Carefully sidling along the branch and ignoring the twigs and stems that pulled at her skin, she called out to the other Kelvic again, “Please, I’m sorry! I didn’t realize… you don’t have to keep running! I won’t eat you, I promise!” Why he might believe her, she had no idea, but she never got to be around other Kelvics, not since Ryker had bought her. And the one she had gotten to meet, well… she’d just petched that up royally, hadn’t she? Not that it was going much better this time around…

Itt had clenched his eyes tight in preparation for his doom. He didn't want to see the dirty jaws that he may fall into should his branch give way to the big eater's favour. He was quite content with not knowing what the inside of another creature's mouth looked like. Unless it was a bird, then he'd be interested. Unless that bird what a giant hawk trying to eat him, then he wasn't so interested.

The odd sounds of scratching and scrambling pried Itt's eyes open, looking over to the trunk where the beast had been. What in the world was it doing? It appeared to be... hugging the tree? Oh, maybe it was apologizing! After all, it had been quite rude to be trying to push the tree around like it was, shaking its leaves off and shimmying its branches. The tree was just trying to have a nice day-

Oh wait, it wasn't hugging the tree.

Itt had met very few felines in his few days, and many of those felines had all feet firmly planted on the ground. And they were smaller. Much smaller. So it never occurred to Itt that there was a chance that these things could climb. After all, dogs couldn't. So this new information came with mixed feelings because it was cool he got to know more about these creatures he rarely sees. But also his chances of dying were flying through the clouds and he did not like it.

Screaming internally through his heart, he started to move. He climbed as quickly as he could to go towards the overlapping branches of the next tree and grab on. The beast was bigger than he was, so if it dared tried to chase him on his branch, the weaker end of it will break, so he didn't want to fall to the ground with it.

Of course, Itt wasn't thinking about the plan in such a linear fashion, only piecing something together through the horrified screaming thoughts saying RUUUUUUUN and AAAAAAAAAAAH! His paw reached out for the next branch for the next few ticks.

The sloth didn't think it was possible to be more panicked than he was, but when the branch he had been on shook with heavy steps, Itt's mind lost it. He needed to run, he needed to go, he needed to be human and run NOW!!

Ironically, at the same time as the tigress, Itt shifted into human form. He was slightly surprised by the amount of light his shift supposedly produced this time, but he figured it was due to his fear rather than it being a second light source. But Itt didn't really think about the consequences of being human on the thinnest part of a branch as possible.

The new weight bearing down on the small twig prooved too much, and half of the branch crunched nearly in half. Itt and the branch swung down, Itt now audibly screamed as he was thrown into the side of the next tree. He hit the trunk with an oof and splinters, smelling human flesh berate his nose.

Oh no, it ate humans too!! He didn't want to die!

He glanced at the ground and wondered if he could outrun the thing on foot. He didn't know much about felines, he only saw them walking around, and they didn't seem all that fast. But this cat had already deceived him multiple times so he didn't know whether to risk it or not.

As his red face and heaving chest started to take in too much air, the voice of an angel called to him, settling on his ears. Was someone there? Did someone come here to save him? He owed them his life! He would kiss their feet and feed them the best berries and, and- wait, where are they?

He glanced on the ground and saw no signs of life, not even in the big ear. He looked up and saw a woman?

Itt sniffed again and his eyebrows raised. Oooooooooooooooooooh! That's why he smelled human!

"Kelvic!" He exclaimed, his sudden relief sounding like joy in comparison to his cries of bloody murder. His arms and hands wobbled, so he let go, falling to the ground the rest of the six or so feet. He landed on his feet but fell backward onto his back with another oof.

Yes! He wasn't going to die! He wasn't going to die today!

When the branch broke and the other Kelvic fell, Zavya was violently rocked back and forth, clinging for dear life to the limb that now threatened to dump her at any tick. Hugging it like she would a lover, she held her breath until it ceased its moving, cursing herself for climbing the damn thing in the first place. Once she’d gotten past the hurdle of getting up here, she hadn’t even once considered the trouble in getting back down. And it sure was a long way down.

The tigress released her breath in a shuddering sigh once the tree stopped moving, trembling slightly as she sat back up. She supposed there was always the option of falling like he had; obviously, it wasn’t as far as it seemed since he didn’t seem too banged up. But Zavya was a cat with dignity. She’d gotten herself into this, and she could very well get herself back out. Hopefully.

“I’m coming down!” she warned the now human on the ground, slowly inching backwards on the branch. “Or, at least I’m trying to,” she added in a mutter under her breath, before calling out louder, “I’m not going to hurt you! Please don’t leave!” As if he should believe me. Let’s just hope he does, huh?

Having scooted along until she could feel her back pressed up to the trunk, Zavya carefully turned so that she was facing it again. Wrapping her arms around the bole, she shifted her weight until her legs soon followed. Slowly, she started shimmying down until she could see another branch, her feet dropping to its length while her arms still clung to the trunk. The Kelvic repeated this process a few times until she was only a few feet from the ground. Almost there, almost made it, she thought as she reached for the next branch down, her foot finally slipping and sending her tumbling to the ground with a yowl.

Zavya collided with the earth with a loud thump, pausing a few ticks to catch her breath before scrambling back to her feet with all the offended grace of an upset housecat. Pretending as if she wasn’t a fearsome predator who had just clattered to the ground with the agility of a shambling toddler, she turned to face the other Kelvic with her chin in the air. “Who are you?” she asked, doing her best to sound friendly even as it came out sounding like a demand. “What are you doing out here?”

Had the man not already run by then, the tigress stepped forward, golden eyes curiously burning up and down his unclad form. His nudity mattered little to her; it wasn’t that she was inspecting. She only wondered at the animal she’d seen before, looking for signs of it in the creature that now stood before her. “For that matter… what are you?” she added, noting the slightly greenish hue that lingered in the locks atop his head. “I grew up around all kinds of Kelvics, and I can’t say I’ve ever seen an animal like you before.”

Itt turned over to his side and pushed his hands into the soft patch of dirt to stand, his head and eyes facing the tigress with his full attention. Even when he finally stood he didn't bother to wipe the clumps of dirt that clung to his skin until she started to hug the tree and climb down. Aaaaaw, she was apologizing! Good, he was glad the two made up. The poor tree had been through a lot over the past ticks. It deserved a hug. He took a step towards her, head cranked upward to see her progress, entirely unaware of the social boundaries that normally would be upheld in such situations. Looking up a woman's skirt at her knickers would cause decent enough punishment for most folk, but Itt was luckily in good enough company that committing a far worse offense wouldn't lead to punishment. At least tradition punishment.

His foot snapped the small branch that had originally caught the woman's attention, Itt peering down, and then towards the limp arm of the tree. He grimaced at the injury, the pale innards of the forest being contrasting heavily with the dark outer skin. He should probably apologize too.

Stepping over the tree, he patted it's wrinkled bark, giving it a moment of gentle embrace. It was a good tree. A good tree with a broken arm but a good tree nonetheless. Continue on growing big guy.

Completing his apology with a squeeze, he let go of the hefty trunk, looking up again to see his assailant's progress. Huh, she hadn't gotten that far, had she? She seemed to be a pretty good climber earlier. Why didn't she just go back to her climbing cat? "Oh, uh," he raised a hand in a gentle point towards a branch she could use as a hand hold and swing down. Though she was distracted and continued to shimmy down the trunk. Itt didn't think the trunk was all that great of a hand hold for climbing, but if that's how she climbed then he guessed he couldn't protest.

Silently pointing to possible branches for support that almost always went ignored, Itt followed her descent until she finally fell the rest of the way down. He visibly winced, his shoulders bunching up at his ears and his face twisting into wrinkles like he ate a lemon. He peeked one eye open. "Ow," he voiced what he empathized inside.

When she stood with energy and ferocity, Itt took a single step back, finally remembering to wipe the dirt off his back and behind.

She was pretty, like a lot of the woman he's seen. She reminded him of this orange bird he had seen once a while back at home. He didn't linger on her nakedness, rather focused on her golden eyes that questioned him without saying a word. Except when she did.

He had been so engrossed in her dominant gaze that he missed the first question, catching the second, which he didn't quite understand. What meant it was a question, but the filler words jumbled the possible interpretation he formulated in his head. Was she asking who he was? That's usually what people asked him when they first met him. But then she said his name right after. Why would she ask him who he was if she already knew his name?

"Yes, What the Petch is That." He smiled a toothy grin, his arms extending some as if presenting himself to her like a parent does to their child's new puppy. "Kelvic, yes, Kelvic, I Kelvic." He nodded. He had been hiding his Kelvic nature from most everyone in the city, due to the warnings from the one who saved him at the lake, but if she was a Kelvic too, and no one was around, then he didn't see any harm in her knowing what he was. Not that it was a hidden secrete at this point. They already knew far more about each other than what most friends know about one another, like how Itt didn't seem to quite stand up straight, and how his hair had green splotches in it, and his teeth were flat and rounded. However she stood tall with a wide, strong stance, and her voice almost boomed, Itt's own cracking and lingering in the air like a stale yawn.

He grinned at her, then at the stain grass and bones behind her that was the little big ear. "What?" He pointed at the remains. What he really meant to say was "How did you come out of know where and kill it so quickly?" but Itt's linguistic skills were limited and very often flat out wrong, so "What" was the closest he could get to what he actually meant.

Before she could open her mouth to speak, there was a rustle in the bushes to their left. Itt turned, brown eyes wide, searching. His frozen body allowed him to quickly be able to spot movement, but there wasn't much moving in the first place. Itt narrowed his eyes, squinting at the bush. With this faux focus, Itt noticed a rather large branch, a bit bigger than his forearm was in the middle of the bush.

The sloth relaxed his shoulder and looked up, finding a splintered stub in the tree above them. He giggled. They were scared of a branch. Heh. Heh. Heh. He turned to beam at the woman, but as stealthily as she had come she was gone.

Itt frowned, glancing around in case there were obvious signs of her. After all, he did still smell her, so she couldn't be that far. Then again, he's never come across an animal quite like her before, so maybe she was already a mile away. Some animals can run pretty fast after all. What type of animal was she, anyway?

Sniffing the air a moment and walking over with heavy feet to where she had stood proud, he looked at the ground and where it had indented when she landed. There were also some clumps of dirt that looked like they had been kicked up that he didn't remember being there before when he was looking at the little big ear. Looked a bit like the ground when he started to run really fast all of a sudden. Maybe she took off the way she had come?

Looking forward for further signs of her presence, he started walking where he assumed she had gone, based on the direction of the muddy clumps and her original hunting position. The scent of her was still strong, and really unique actually, so he continued in as straight of a line as possible until the scent fell short and Itt was left alone. He checked the ground for more mud clumps or footprints, orange hair, or any other signs of her but his eyes couldn't detect such things, and his nose was getting too used to the smell to really pick it up anymore in such small quantities.

Itt frowned once more, rubbing his neck. Maybe she'll come back?

Itt looked up the nearest tree and went over to its burly trunk. Wedging his hand into the crevice of the lowest branch and the trunk, he held on to the tree with his sloth grip, yanking himself up with a quick movement. With the branch now at his hip, he swung his leg to the side, resting it on the branch lengthwise. After that, all he needed to do was roll over, push himself to sit up, and then repeat the process up each branch. He only went a few tiers higher, however, because he wanted to be low enough for her to see him if she came back.

He found a nice sturdy limb to sit on. With his back against the trunk and leaves within his reach to munch on, he waited for her with hope and curiosity.

She never came back.
