It was early in the day as Ari entered Healing Hands just in time to see Kita finishing a conversation and exchange of money and goods with a customer.

Carefully, Ari stepped out of the way and bowed her head to the customer as he left, before smiling at Kita as a greeting, bowing her head respectfully as she spoke to the older woman. “Morning Kita. Successful?” she asked, indicating the money the woman was putting away.

“Yes, so far. He was nice, just needed some Chamayo tonic for his mother. Apparently she’s started to get quite confused and forgetful lately. Told him that it wouldn’t cure her, but that one dose a day will make it less severe.” The woman said, and Ari took a few moments to process what she had said before she nodded solemnly at the realization of what had been said.

“Every little helps? Less severe is more good memory?” she said, tilting her head as she watched the other woman as she seemed to remember something.

“Oh, speaking of which we have some more Chamayo seeds. Chances are he’ll be back so could you be a dear and go make some more tonic ready for when he does return needing more?” the older woman asked and after processing what she’d said, Ari smiled and nodded.

“Of course.” she agreed, before heading into the back room, just as she heard Kita call out.

“Remas should be in there somewhere so if you can’t find anything, just ask him.” the human woman’s voice rung out and Ari kept smiling slightly, immediately going to grab a decently sized jar.

“Chamayo tonic? That jar is too big for one container. Don’t make too much otherwise it’ll go to waste.” the soft voice startled Ari slightly as she glanced to see Remas cleaning a few of the shelves. “This one will be better.”, he said, holding out a jar about a third of the size of the one she had picked out.

“Thank you.” she said calmly, accepting the jar and putting the other one back, before looking for the Chamayo seeds, soon realizing she had never actually worked with the Chamayo seeds before.

“Third shelf just at the left. The tonic is an infusion, so I’d just crush them up a little and then soak them in hot water until it gets cold.” the man said, continuing on with his cleaning, and Ari nodded in response, smiling appreciatively at the man but ultimately keeping quiet as she found the correct shelf.

She grabbed a handful of the seeds and rinsed them, before placing them into the jar, adding a couple more until it looked like there was enough in the jar. Next she found a spoon and carefully used the back of the spoon to crush the seeds as well as she could against the side of the jar, glad to see that they weren’t particular hard seeds and her attempt at crushing them had split them all into smaller pieces.

Tonics and Tinctures

Postby Ari'Ellin on October 1st, 2020, 10:55 am

Soon she found a metal pot and filled it with water, carefully she placed it over the fire and waited for a couple of chimes until the water was boiling. Being careful not to spill anything, Ari used a piece of cloth to protect her hands from burns and carried the water to the jar, slowly pouring it into the jar until it was mostly full and the Chamayo seeds were now floating around in the water, the slight colour beginning to leech into the water as it started to infuse.

Not wanting to put the lid on the jar until it had cooled down but also wanting to keep any curious insects out of the tonic, Ari picked up a nearby cloth and covered the mixture with it, quickly glancing around and finding a piece of string to tie it into place.

“I strain when it’s cold?” she asked, looking towards Remas and watching him nodding as a smile found its way onto Ari’s face.

“Yes, you can make an infusion with cold water too, but using hot water quickens the process and you know to strain it when the water has cooled down.” Remas spoke softly, seeming to be engrossed in his cleaning and reorganizing of the room.

Ari smiled softly and nodded at the mans words before she picked up one of the unused Chamayo seeds, rolling it between her fingers before turning to Remas and gesturing to the seed.

“Is poison?” she hummed, tilting her head and watching Remas shake his head as a grin spread across her face. She was curious to see if the seed had an aura she could read, and if it did, what it would look like. Humming to herself, she tried to focus on the seed, trying to force her djed to her eyes as she focused on the seed. It was a few moments of pushing her djed to her eyes and a strange feeling of pressure beginning to build before a faint ring of colour began to appear around the seed.

It was small and didn’t extend far past the seed itself, and although it was faint she could tell that the aura was there. She exhaled through her nose, still focusing on the seed and turning it in her hands, paying attention to the subtle colours of the aura and the way in which it seemed to pulsate and shift slightly. She wanted to try to see what the seeds aura could tell her, and to commit the seeds aura to her memory so she could try to recognize it in the future.

After a few moments, Ari inhaled, closing her eyes and rubbing at them slightly before putting the seed back into its place. She took a few moments to open her eyes again and immediately looked to Remas.

“We need more of things?” she asked in broken common, watching the man continue has work for a few moments as he checked over a shelf or two before he nodded and briefly turned to her.

Tonics and Tinctures

Postby Ari'Ellin on October 1st, 2020, 6:11 pm

“We’re beginning to run low on Jile berries if you’re up to going looking for it outside. They’re available all year around.” the man said calmly, grabbing two berries and handing one to Ari, allowing her to examine the berries for a chime or two.

“They found here?” she asked, looking up at the man in time to see him nod. “From bush? Tree?” she questioned. “What look?” she asked as she looked over the berry, paying attention to its blackish brown colour and its tiny size. She hummed softly, sniffing the berry slightly to get the faint scent of pine that caused her to chuckle slightly.

“Sometimes a tree or shrug. It has green nettles and smells like pine.” the man said calmly, finding a book and opening to the correct page before showing a picture of the plant to her.

Again Ari looked over the drawing carefully, and took note of everything that was in the drawing, before going to hand the berry back to Remas before seeing him shake his head, indicating that she should keep it as he handed a jar to her.

“There’ll be lots of different ages of berries on there, so get the ones that look most like that one, and put them into here. Just pick them from the tree and put them in here, okay?” he asked, going back to wiping down a shelf as Ari took a moment to nod, rolling the berry in her palm as she nodded again before heading out of the front door of the shop, bowing her head to Kita on her way.

It wasn’t long before she was walking through Lhavit, getting closer to every area with plants that she could find, taking extra time to check the shape of the leaves of each plant to see if she could find the right plant.

Soon she found herself on the trail up to Koten temple, finding the path that veered towards the left and she followed it, making her way into Alheas park, grinning widely at the view and all the plants as she started to make her way amongst the plants, looking for the one specific plant. It took half a bell of carefully examining each plant until she managed to find the one that she was looking for.

She checked it’s leaves to find green nettles, and looking closer she saw a myriad of small brown and black berries, some looking lighter in colour than others. The scent of pine was unmistakeable to her, and grinning widely she moved as though to pick the berries before pausing and furrowing her brow.

Carefully she pulled the Jile berry from the jar and looked at it, exhaling slowly before she started to focus on it, forcing djed to her eyes and mouth as she hoped to have two ways to detect it’s aura. It took a chime or two for enough djed to pool into her eyes and an aura began to disperse outwards from the berry, less than an inch thick. She looked overa1 the berry’s aura carefully, examining it’s colours and the way it seemed to pulsate, before she opened her mouth, the taste of pine pooling into her mouth and causing her to cough slightly, not having expected it to work.

Tonics and Tinctures

Postby Ari'Ellin on October 2nd, 2020, 6:11 am

Her impromptu coughing fit had caused her to lose her focus and when she looked back to the berry she found that the djed pooling in her eyes had already dissipated. Frowning to herself, she placed the Jile berry back into the jar, reaching out and picking one of the similar looking berry’s from the plant.

Taking a few moments to breathe again, she closed her eyes, keeping her eyes closed while the djed pooled until she felt ready to open her eyes. She looked over this berry’s aura and grinned widely as she found just how similar it looked to the Jile berries aura, and soon she tested the pine-like aura on her tongue as she opened her mouth, this time more prepared for the taste of pine. Grinning, she came to realise that this was a Jile berry and she stopped focusing as hard, allowing the pooled djed to dissipate away from her eyes and to the rest of her body again, hurriedly reach for the berries and picking them carefully but as quickly as she could without crushing them.

The jar that Remas had given her was small, and the berries she had found on the plant had mostly filled it, and hurriedly she returned to the shop, bowing her head to Kita again and holding up the jar to show what she’d been doing as the woman smiled back.

“Jile berries? Remas said we were running low! Thank you dear! Could you pass them to Remas so he can organise them? Then send him out front so he can take over?” the woman asked, a look of pride on her face as she mentioned her son. The look on her face was enough to send a smile across Ari’s face as she nodded to the woman happily.

“I will!” she said cheerily, making her way into the back room where she could see Remas. Proudly she held up the jar and grinned, before proclaiming. “Jile berries! Kita want you in front.” she said, watching the man turn around and take the jar, checking over its contents before putting it down onto one of the shelves, presumably in the jars new home.

“There…” the man said, moving to put his cloth away before he exhaled, turning and heading towards the front of the shop in a calm silence. Ari could hear a bit of conversation before Kita appeared, entering the back room with a warm smile on her face and a bag of leaves in her hand.

“Vyfox leaves. I need to dry them so they’ll last longer. Care to help me dear?” the woman ask and Ari nodded before making her way closer to the woman.

“What you need?” Ari asked calmly before the woman stopped her.

“What do you need.” Kita corrected her and Ari nodded and smiled slightly.

“What do you need?” Ari applied the correction and grinned more at Kita as the woman nodded in approval.

“Well, first we need to rinse these leaves, and then because they’re fairly moist we’ll have to use the fire to dry them. Be a dear and get a pot of water and a couple of those trays?” the woman asked and Ari nodded, quickly grabbing the tools and water that Kita had asked for.

Tonics and Tinctures

The older woman took the trays and gestured for Ari to follow her as she set the trays next to the fireplace, indicating for Ari to put the pot of water down near to them, before the older woman moved to sit cross legged on the floor and Ari copied her.

“Have you ever dried herbs before?” the older woman asked before placing a handful of leaves into the water, moving them around before pulling some out and shaking them off, lying them onto the sheet and pulling the stem away from each of the larger leaves.

“Not like this… I seen dried… hanging?” Ari stated, beginning to copy the older woman as she went through and washed a handful of leaves at a time.

“Yes, we can dry them by hanging if they’re sturdier and drier. These leaves are too moist and delicate. It would take too long to dry them that way and they would begin to mould, which would make them dangerous. We’re going to use heat to dry them here.” the older woman explain and Ari listening carefully, nodding to show that she had been listening.

“So the hanging is only strong, dry herbs?” she questioned.

“For…” Kita offered the correction prompt and Ari felt an awkward smile creep over her.

“Hanging is only… for… the strong dry herbs?” she corrected herself, looking to the woman as she nodded at both the correction in her language and the question. “And these weak… these are weak and moist herbs, so we heat them?” Ari questioned again, watching as the woman nodded.

Ari grinned wider and set to work, grabbing the leaves and and rinsing more of them off, laying them carefully on the tray and pulling off the thicker, larger stems as she had seen Kita doing earlier. It didn’t take long for the two women working together to complete the task.

“Now we dry them?” Ari quizzed the older woman as she nodded.

“The fire is mostly just embers, but it’s still warm. This is good for what we need! And see these notches here, above the fire? These will be what holds those trays in place. Be a dear and put them into that for me?” Ari’Ellin nodded, carefully picking up one of the two trays and sliding it into the two notches that were carved just above the fire, then carefully she copied her motions with the second tray.

“We wait now? How long?” Ari asked, turning to Kita and watching the woman.

“We’ll check every half bell. Until then, I believe your Chamayo decoction should be cooled. Could you strain that into this?” Kita asked, handing a jar to Ari as Ari nodded, heading back to the jar of now cool, slightly brown tinted water that had various pieces of Chamayo seeds floating in it.

Nodding to herself, she checked it over and grabbed a clean piece of cloth to strain the mixture with. She took the original covering cloth off the jar and replaced it with the clean cloth, tying it in place with a piece of twine.

Carefully she opened the jar that would be the tonics home, and Ari picked up the jar of liquid with both hands, focusing carefully on pouring it into it’s new jar. Once the liquid had been transferred, she carefully held the jar with one hand, patting it a couple of times to see if there was anything left. Finally satisfied with what she’d accomplished, she put the jar down and screwed the lid onto the new jar of what should have been Chamayo tonic, a wide grin spreading across her face as she looked it over a few times.
