31st Fall, 520

It was fairly early morning as Ari’Ellin made her way through the streets of Lhavit to Zintia, the central peak of the city. She knew that there was a large park on Zintia peak and though she’d stepped into the park from time to time, she’d never really had the chance to fully explore the park in all of it’s glory, by sunlight or moonlight.

She didn’t particularly trust herself to not get lost, and the idea of being lost at night wasn’t something that she particularly liked the thought of, and so she’d set off from her home just as the sun was rising and beginning to illuminate the city.

She’d packed her backpack with her book, quill, and ink, as well as her coat for when she would likely get cold later on in the day, and then she’d pulled on her boots, taking care to lace them up properly before heading out.

It wasn’t too long since she’d found her way onto Zintia peak, having crossed Shinyama peak on her way there, and now she was finding the right trail to get into the park.

“Koten temple...” she mumbled to herself, reading a few signs and nodding as she found the right way, the Temple getting more and more visible until the path veered left abruptly and she followed it, smiling as it lead into a forest and then opened out into a park that was decorated with warm hues of oranges, reds, and pinks. It was a beautiful sight to see, completely different from almost everything she’d seen before in her short life so far.

It was beautiful and she was glad that she’d planned to spend most of, if not all of her day, in the park so she could enjoy it more fully and explore it to see what the park hid within itself.

At first she just made her way along one of the paths, meandering slowly down it as she occasionally stopped to look at the plants and flowers that drew her attention. She wasn’t sure if they were poisonous, or had any medical benefits, or whether they had purely decorative purposes, but something about the colours and the unusual nature of the plants was captivating to Ari’Ellin.

“One day I’ll know what you all are!” she told the flowers and plants, confident in her abilities. She would be sure to ask Kita about all the flowers in the park, just to see what the older woman could teach her. One day she might even take one of the flowers into work with her, just to ask Kita if they could be used for anything. For now she was content with just enjoying the beauty of the park and the occasional float scent drifting over on the wind.

Humming happily to herself she continued on her way, passing another person occasionally and nodding her head to them as a silent greeting, not wanting to intrude on them and them having the same respect to avoid intruding on her as she enjoy the peace and quiet of the park.

As she made her way through the park and looked at the plants, she began to wonder whether the things she had been taught about plants back home would apply to somewhere like this.

She hummed as she looked over a couple of the plants, trying to recall what she had been told back home. She knew that there was something about the leaves that was usually a tell tale sign of something being poisonous.

Frowning to herself, she looked over all of the plants before one sent a slight uneasy feeling washing over her rapidly as she counted the leaves in each cluster.

“Three...” she mumbled to herself, before her memory shook itself into place as she recalled the rhyme that her mother had taught her. “Leaves of three, let it be... Also singular leaves...” she grinned and nodded, happy with her memory.

She knew that that wouldn’t cover all of the poisonous plants throughout the world, but back on Mura it had been a good indicator of the plant being poisonous. Now she wanted to test that rhyme here...

She didn’t think it would be a good approach to go straight into eating the plant. Instead she inspected the plant with the clusters of three leaves closely, taking note of how the leaves had jagged, uneven edges, and their glossy finish, along with the vibrant orangish colour that made it seem so very different when she recalled all over the other plants she’d seen in her past.

Carefully she pulled one of the leaves from the plant, scrunching her nose up and grimacing at the sight of the milky sap dripping from where the leaf had connected to the stem of the plant.

Something about the cloudy, whitish liquid didn’t seem like something that would be beneficial to a state of living healthily. Ingesting it was definitely not a good idea in her mind, yet still she wanted a way to test whether it would be dangerous...

Humming to herself, she looked at the leaf, dripping with the milky sap, and then at her inner arm, using the leaf to smear a small amount of the sap on the inside of her arm. If it irritated her arm then she would know that it truly was dangerous to ingest, after all something that irritated the outside of her arm could surely irritate her mouth and throat and the rest of her insides, that much seemed as though it would be definite in her mind.

Nodding to herself, she spent a few moments just watching the patch of her arm that had been smeared with the sap, before putting the leaf back next to the plant, happy to let it decompose back to the ground where it had initially come from.

Glancing around, she spotted a bench that seemed to diffuse rainbows around it, and instantly she was drawing over to it, smiling as she looked over the sky glass bench, marvelling at how much it complemented the ethereal beauty of the park with the rainbows bouncing from it’s surface.

Chuckling softly to herself, Ari’Ellin made her way further along the path, occasionally stopping to check her arm to see if any sign of irritation began to appear. For now, it seemed as though nothing was happening and Ari nodded, slightly disappointed by the lack of reaction. If nothing happened, it would mean that she’d have to learn new ways to see which plants were poisonous and which ones were safe to consume and touch.

The sun was beginning to climb higher and higher in the sky as she continued walking throughout the park, and it wasn’t long until it was at it’s highest point in the sky. Most people tended to take some time to sleep around this time, and Ari’Ellin could feel herself beginning to tire slightly.

Luckily it wasn’t long until she found another sky glass bench, this one shaded by a beautiful, strangely coloured tree who’s leaves crept over the pathway and offered shelter from the sun. She had no intention of actually sleeping in the park, as even though it was part of the city, it was still possible for something to get into the park from outside of the city, and she didn’t want to wake up to something mauling her. Instead, she just wanted to close her eyes and rest them for a few moments whilst she enjoyed the sounds of the birdsong and the gentle rustling of the plants as small animals and the wind moved through them.

Relaxing onto the bench, she tilted her head back as she closed her eyes, able to see the mottled light shining softly through the leaves of the strange tree, finding that the light was good to keep her awake and alert enough to react quickly, should she need to.

It was a pleasant feeling, being able to just rest her eyes in such a way without having to worry too much about disrupting or distracting anyone else in the park as it seemed that so few people were in the large park today. It was an enjoyable experience, one where she got to just focus on herself rather than spending so much time thinking about others that were around her. It even reminded her of some parts of Mura that were equally as tranquil, as the park.

She sighed contentedly, briefly opening her eyes to grab her coat from her backpack and use it as a blanket to ensure that her lack of motion wouldn’t cool her down too much. She hadn’t expected such an action to relax her so much and help her to trust the park so easily. Soon she found her closed eyelids growing heavier and heavier until they too heavy to open them again, and her waking conscience gave in to the promise of a warm, comfortable nap surrounded by the sounds and smells of nature. Within a matter of ticks, she’d drifted into a shallow slumber, the birdsong shifting her dreams to match the sweet, delicate music that resonated through the warm noon air.

Meander

She wasn’t sure how long had passed when she roused and woke up, but the first thing she felt was a slight drop of rain on her face, then something pulling at her coat. Her first reflex at something pulling her coat was to reach out and grab her coat back, and so she did.

She felt her hand hit something soft and squishy, and almost immediately she heard something grunt and groan in pain. She opened her eyes, fully awake now, and what she saw was a man doubled over, clutching at his groin and hissing in pain.

“I... Sorry!” she called out, watching as the man shook his head in response, the hit having seemingly forced all the wind from his lungs. “I help, what need?” she asked, jumping up from the seat and grabbing the man’s arm, directing him to sit on the bench instead.

“Wa-ter.” she heard him manage to choke out, one of his hands gesturing to the bag flung over his shoulder. Quickly Ari’Ellin reached her hand into the bag and pulled out a container filled with water, being careful not to look at too much else within the bag as she passed the water to the man.

“Sorry, did not mean to hit.” Ari’Ellin grimaced slightly as she realised just how much pain she’d put someone in, though the man kept shaking his head as he opened his water and took several long drinks from the container before putting them away.

“I was just trying to wake you up!” he said, shaking his head, obviously regretting his act of kindness. “It’s going to rain you know!”

Ari’Ellin winced again, shaking her head. “Sorry, did not see.” she said calmly. “You need go? I help.” Ari stated, her eyes looking over the man as she spoke.

“Koten Temple. I need to go back there.” he said, and Ari’Ellin nodded, standing closer to him and holding a hand out to him so that he could pull himself to standing.

She moved closer to him, pulling his arm around her shoulders so she could support him a little easier and in almost complete silence she started directing the man back the way that she’d came. She could feel him leaning against her and every few steps she heard him wince and a fresh wave of guilt swept over her until she started to feel something on her arm furthest from the man starting to itch.

She looked down at her arm to see the entire patch of skin near her elbow having turned red with some patches beginning to swell up. At first she was confused, though less than a few moments later she remembered crushing up the leaf and smearing it’s sap onto her arm.

“Shyke almighty...” she muttered under her breath, looking over her arm then back ahead of her.

“What is that?” the man asked and Ari couldn’t help but chuckled at her own carelessness.

“I test to see plant dangerous.” she started before chuckling again. “It look like it is dangerous. Had leaves three, gloss leaves. Looks like they poisonous.”

The man stayed quiet, seemingly bewildered by the Konti’s prior choices to test the plant on her own arm. There were a few chimes of silence before the man finally opened his mouth.

“Did you not think to ask someone?” his tone was sharp and short, and Ari’Ellin felt a slight frown across her face as she shrugged.

“Nobody near. I want know how test.” she said, her own voice mirroring his in the sharpness as she looked directly ahead, not interested in the man other than how long it would take to get him to the entrance to the park so she could finally leave him and go back to enjoying her day.

The rest of the walk was in complete silence, other than the occasional wince of pain from the man who she was certain was just over exaggerating at this point. Ari’Ellin just kept her eyes down, wanting to avoid showing her disdain for the man.

Fortunately it wasn’t too long until they got to the entrance of the park and she hurriedly stepped away from him.

“You here. You can find alone yes?” she stated, her question being more of a statement than anything, and as she looked at the man, he simply nodded and started on his way, no farewells exchanged.

She simply stood, watching him leave until he’d left her line of sight and she could frown more, her hand going to scratch at her arm, the itching getting more than she could bear.

She looked over the red patch with the swelling beginning to spread more and more and a sigh escaped her lips as she decided she would be best off heading back to her home and resigning to her decision, she started on her way, scuffing her feet on the floor as she dragged them behind her.

It took a few chimes but eventually she got home and instantly she grabbed some water, splashing it over her arm and instantly wincing at the feeling of the itching growing more and more intense. She kept watching the red, swelling skin as she splashed it again, using her hand to aggressively rub the water over the patch of skin, hoping to relieve some of the itching and the swelling as she silently cursed herself for not having thought of what to do should there be a reaction to the plant.

It was difficult for her to choose what to do next, though she didn’t want to have to visit the Healing Hands or the Catholicon to have someone look over her potential injury, at least not until it seemed that the itching wasn’t going to dissipate. Instead she chose to try to thing of something else she could do to keep her occupied whilst she waited to see what would happen.

Sighing softly, she opted to organise the chest in her room. She knelt in front of it as she opened it to see her few possessions haphazardly thrown into the wooden container and quickly she started to move them away, trying to create some sort of organisational system.

It was only around half a bell later that she’d moved everything in all the ways that she could think of, so frowning to herself she closed the chest and looked at her arm, seeing that the swelling seemed to have dissipated slightly, and the redness seeming to have lessened in colour.

Smiling to herself, she splashed her arm with water one more time, determined to make sure that the area was kept clean. She continued on with her day, checking her arm over and over again until the reaction seemed to have vanished, or at least got to a point where it no longer intruded upon her.
