The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

It was early in the day and Ari’Ellin wanted to go spend some time in Alheas Park, enjoying the bizarre enigma that was the beautifully coloured plants. Humming to herself, she made her way across the peaks, finding the path that lead towards Kotex Temple, and then as the path split and veered away, she followed it cautiously, watching as the path moved into a patch of trees and finally emerged in the park.

The park always amazed her, with it’s beautiful array of colours, and of plants that she had never seen anywhere else. She loved the peace and quiet of the park too, and how she could spend most of her day there and still never run into anyone else strolling through the park and enjoy everything it had to offer.

Humming softly to herself still, she began to walk around the park, half wishing that she was an artist so that she could try to capture the beauty of the park for all to see, especially those that had never been to Lhavit and would never see the park with their own two eyes.

Unfortunately she had never been creatively gifted. She’d seen others pick up a tool and somehow manage to instantly be able to make something that looked somewhat decent, whereas when Ari had attempted to do the same thing, her creations had been pointless. They’d looked restrained and cautious and showed no natural talent for the things. She knew that if she wanted to try something creative in those ways, she’d have to work hard at it and have someone show her the basics first.

It had disappointed her at first, but she’d found that she had other talents she could throw herself into.

Glancing around she saw nobody around and calmly she made her way over to a pretty bench that seemed to be made of the skyglass that decorated so much of the shining city. It was a substance that she’d never seen before coming to Lhavit, and it had always amazed her. The way that the light hitting it produced such beautiful rainbows was enough to entrance her. It was something that she wished had been in Mura. She wished that she could take some to Mura herself to show to everyone, just to show them what they had been missing from the rest of the world.

Sighing softly she leant back against the bench, her eyes looking towards the sky and tried to remember some of the songs her mother had song to her as a child while she’d watch the sky. One of those songs soon found it’s way into her mind, what she thought was the tune before she found herself trying to sing along to it, her voice quiet and apprehensive as she did so.

“Early one morning,
Just as the sun was rising,
I heard a maid sing,
In the valley below.

O, don’t deceive me,
O, never leave me,
How could you-“

Her voice cracked slightly as she tried to change her pitch two suddenly, a grimace spreading across her face as the strangled sound escaped from her, and she found herself suddenly unable to recall the words, too distracted by the sound that she had made.

Sounds and Songs

She spent a few moments glancing around to make sure that nobody else was there and nobody had heard her failed attempt at singing, before she took a few deep breaths and hummed loudly, trying to find a way to ease her nerves. She remembered her mother being a pleasant singer, and she was determined to find a way to try to match her mothers attempts. Her mother wasn’t trained or professional by any means, and Ari’Ellin wanted to see that she was able to hold a tune, no matter how long it would take.

Exhaling slowly and then inhaling again, Ari’Ellin stood up from the bench, walking slowly along the path as she realised that she seemed to be able to breathe more deeply now that she was standing. Perhaps her lack of ability had been down to her sitting down? She wasn’t certain, but for now she preferred to blame that than blame her lack of musical ability.

Breathing deeply for a few more chimes, she listened to what she remembered of the song, at least how her mother had sang it. The higher pitched part was where she had failed earlier, so maybe she could try to start at a lower pitch, something that she was more comfortable with to begin with.

Nodding to herself, she started with the song, trying to sing it a bit lower and this time trying to refuse to let any awkward pitches distract her.

“Early one morning,
Just as the sun was rising,
I heard a maiden sing,
In the valley below.

O, don't deceive me,
O, never leave me,
How could you use
A poor maiden so?

Remember the vows,
That you made to your Mary,
Remember the bower,
Where you vowed to be true,

O, don't deceive me,
O, never leave me,
How could you use
A poor maiden so?”

Part way through she found herself beginning to run out of her breath, seemingly not breathing enough during her attempts at singing. Desperate to try to finish the full song, she paused briefly and loudly gasped for air, inhaling deeply before she continued the song, her pitching wobbling more than it had been earlier as she tried to keep herself in tune. She tried to ignore it, but as she continued she could feel a frown spread across her face.

“Gay is the garland,
And fresh are the roses,
I've culled from the garden,
To place upon thy brow.

O, don't deceive me,
O, never leave me,
How could you use
A poor maiden so?”

Sighing, she shook her head, giving up with the song just as she spotted a particularly pretty flower that caught her eye. Smiling again, she bent down close to the flower, wafting it’s scent towards her and humming softly at the pretty, floral scent, with hints of something that smelt almost like honey, that seemed to emanate from the pastel blue flower, with almost triangular looking petals. It was a beautiful little thing, and the scent that came from it made her wonder just how such a small thing could produce such a beautiful scent.

Plants fascinated her. They always would do. There were so many different types that could be used for so many purposes. Some made good medicines, others she’d heard could be used for cosmetic purposes, while some were edible. It seemed bizarre to her that things all considered plants could be so different, and even more bizarre was that people had had theories of what each plant could do and somehow gained the courage to be able to test those plants, risking their lives and the lives of who knows how many others in the process.

At least now so many plants had been tested that similar traits were found for each purpose, and a more educated guess could be used, but in earlier times it must have been almost completely random as to how it was decided which plants would be tested for what. Just the idea of that was something that Ari’Ellin couldn’t understand. The way that so many people had chosen to throw caution to the wind in favour of attempts to better civilisation and progress to a more civilised and advanced world.

Shaking her head, Ari'Ellin continued along the path in silence, pulling her coat tighter around her as she turned her attention back to the beautiful scenery around her, half wishing that her mother or her friends back in Mura were here to share the beauty of the park. She knew plenty of artists back in Mura that would have enjoyed pondering over the colours and the shapes of the park and that would have used everything in the park as some form of inspiration for whatever creative projects they were working on, whether than was sewing, embroidery, painting, or even music. She was curious to see what people had made using the park as their inspiration.

Humming softly to herself, she was aware of a young girl, perhaps around seven years of age heading the opposite direction to her, and Ari watched in confusion for a moment, concerned that the girl was alone before she heard someone shouting what could have been a name. Ari watched as the young girl giggled and jumped into the plants, making her way behind some trees, perhaps attempting to hide herself.

It wasn't long before a group of other children around the same age or older came running after the young girl, some of them half chanting, half singing a song.

"Where'd you go?
Where'd you hide?
Of all the places that we tried.
Looking near.
Looking far.
Give a hint from where you are?"

The children song and then Ari'Ellin heard a whistle coming from the area that the girl was trying to hide. She watched the group of children argue for a moment, each one claiming the whistle had come from a different place as one of the older girls took charge and directed them closer to Ari'Ellin.

For a moment Ari'Ellin debated what to do. The park was big and the girl had looked small. She didn't want to risk the little girl getting left behind in the park and getting lost. Hurriedly she made her decision and reaching out to tap the shoulder of the girl that had taken charge.

"Little girl yes? This big?" she asked, as she gestured how tall she thought the little girl looked, before watching the older girl nod. "Not that way. Sing. Teach?" she asked and watched in silence for a few ticks before the children realised and started their song again. This time Ari'Ellin joined in slightly, mumbling the words as in tune and on times as she could try.

"Where'd you go?
Where'd you hide?
Of all the places that we tried.
Looking near.
Looking far.
Give a hint from where you are?"

This time, instead of the whistling sound coming from the trees, the little girl emerged from them, pouting and frowning.

"That isn't far! You aren't supposed to ask other people!" she protested as the children swarmed to her, babbling voices becoming louder than the smallest girl as they all began to ignore the Konti again, far more interested in each other as they discussed which game they should play next.

Half of Ari'Ellin wanted to stay and observe whatever games they would play, while the other half of her guessed that the children wouldn't want someone of her age intruding on them. Instead she kept walking down the path in the direction that the children had come from, a slight grimace on her face as she saw broken plant stems and trodden flowers from where the youngsters had seemindly gotten a little too rowdy with their games.

Humming softly to herself, Ari'Ellin crept closer to the destroyed flowers, checking them over to try to see what they were and whether they could be saved. She reached out, her hand gently caressing the damaged petals and then moving down the stem to where they were unnaturally bent. Upon closer inspection, it seemed that the stems were not bent, but instead they had been almost completely severed, the stems connected just by a couple of fibres. It seemed that it wouldn't be possible to save the flowers and Ari'Ellin frowned slightly, checking over the surrounding live flowers. She couldn't even tell what the delicate orange flowers were or what they might be useful for.

Quietly, she stood up straight again, preparing to continue on her way down the path when she head something rustling in the trees behind her. Hurriedly she turned around and for a few moments she looked towards the trees, trying to see what was their before she noticed some sort of fabric sticking out from the side of one of the trees. It looked as though it could be part of a coat that someone was wearing whilst trying to hide, and a thought came into Ari's head.

"Where'd you go?
Where'd you hide?
Of all the places that we tried.
Looking near.
Looking far.
Give a hint from where you are?"

She half sang out, eyes watching the slip of fabric as it shifted slightly, and then a whistle came from that direction. Carefully, Ari'Ellin stepped off the path and made her way to the tree, being careful to avoid stepping on any more flowers. It wasn't long before she was at the tree and checking around it to see a young boy who was possibly nine years of age.

As the boy looked back at her, the look of disappointment on his face was unmistakeable, and for a moment, Ari'Ellin felt guilty for ruining his fun, before she pointed the direction the group of kids had ran in earlier.

"I see children, you age, run that way?" she said and she saw the boys expression grow even more disappointed as it appeared that his 'friends' had forgotten him. Silently the boy nodded at her and stood still for a few moments, casting his eyes to the floor before he started running after the other children. It looked as though he had made his choice to go catch up to the others before he ended up left alone in the park for gods know how long.

Sighing softly, Ari'Ellin carefully made her way back to the park, silently shaking her head as she hoped that the boy would catch up to the others and enjoy the rest of his day, what little there was left of it at least. She doubted that many of the children's parents would be happy with them staying at the park past sunset, at least not without an adult or at least a child that was older than the rest of them.

She looked in the direction the boy had run for a few moments, making sure that none of the others came running again to try to lose the child. Once she was certain that there would be no sign, she nodded to herself, continuing on her way further into the park, determined to try to stay in the park until the sun had set, just to see what the plants looked like during the night.

Now that she was alone again, it was easier to slowly turn her thoughts away from the children and the game they were playing. She started to just enjoy her surroundings again, appreciating the parks beauty in the gradually cooling temperatures. She couldn't help but wonder just how beautiful the park was in the height of summer, when the weather was at its warmest and the days were longer, and where it was any different, or whether some sort of magic kept the plants thriving all night long. She knew that she would have to come to the park each month, just to see what the area was truly like.

Nodding to herself, she started to feel comfortable that she was alone again, and the childish song crept back into her head again as she wondered who could have made the song and who chose to make a game for it, or whether the song had been made specifically for the game.

A frown spread across her face as she tried to get that song out of her mind. She spent a few moments trying to remember other times that her mother has sung to her, or for any songs that she'd heard on Konti Isle. Finally a song came to her mind and a grin spread across her as she began to remember the tune and words to the song. It wasn't long before she was humming the tune to herself happily, the words echoing through her head. A few moments just enjoying the tune passed before she began to sing along to the tune, her voice hushed and her eyes darting around as she did so.

"I was a giant ocean whale,
Pushing through the seas.
The shadow of my likeness,
Brought sailors to their knees.

I never went to fight them,
Instead went on my way.
But those fearful sailors,
Would end my finally day."

She sang, beginning to realise just what the song had been about. It was one that her father had sun to her when she was much younger, It seemed that her naivete as a child had stopped her from actually listening to the words of the song, not having let her realise exactly what the song was about. Even if she had listened more carefully to the words, she doubted she'd have realised the song was about a whales feelings towards getting killed.

Shaking her head, she felt a chuckle escaping her. It wasn't surprising that the song was about killing a whale. After all she was certain that plenty of songs involved killing various different creatures, some even about killing unfaithful lovers. It just surprised her that such a song was one that her father had sung to her and taught her when she had been so young!
