8 Winter 520

Sitting at his desk Moritz looked about, waiting once more for the next part of the lesson. Today he was in math class, going over something or other involving making things bigger and smaller. Which to Mortiz mind seemed to be most of what math was.

Their instructor for math was Izo, the same person who taught cooking, who always seemed well coifed and ready for anything to Moritz eyes. Moritz did not doubt that if a giant monster came crashing in the man would take in all in stride and have just the right tool to address it. But while Moritz felt he himself had such an air while being serious and cleancut, Izo seemed to do it while joking and being fun all at once. Something Moritz did not think he could muster himself even if he tried.

For todays class chalkboards and chalk had been passed out, and Izo was writing on the front large board.

"Okay class, next is some multiplication and division. For multiplication, think of it this way. You have clusters of the same thing. Say five starfruits. And you have a certain number of clusters, say six. So how many star fruit total would you have? Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty five, thirty star fruit."

Moritz nodded in recognition, understanding the example in its physical nature. Multiplication was just like that, a way of counting groups of things... And division..

"On the other hand division its breaking up a group across so many people. Say you have twenty star fruit, and four people, how many would each person get? Four goes into twenty, four, eight, twelve, sixteen, and twenty, so five each. Assuming you don't have that one friend who sneaks an extra, and another who doesn't like to eat star fruit, then each would get five to keep or eat."

Moritz nodded again, pondering on the words from Izo. He did seem to try to explain things in a way anyone could understand, rather than just throwing information at them.

As Izo began to write out some math problems on the board for them to copy and solve Moritz looked about at the other students at his table. One was a young boy, though likely older than Moritz appeared. Another was a girl, perhaps a bit on the small size for her age whereas Mortiz was on the tall side for his own. Moritz for his part appeared like he was about eleven in his human form, though anyone who saw his eyes would know he was not just a normal human.

He had his eyes marking him as a Kelvic, matching a Okomo, though not functioning so well in the head of a human as it did when properly spaced on the head of an Okomo. In addition to that, since not many days earlier in the season, he also had markings on his eyes from his initiation into Pathfinding. All in all it did not take many more than a quick look at his eyes to note he was not human.

Not even to mention his pelt, hair in his human form, which in color matched the hue and pattern of his Okomo pelt and did not look normal on a human without die involved.

With nothing else to do until Izo finished writing out the problems for them to work on Moritz looked about the room, scanning and considering and passing his eyes from one person to another.

[Alluvion Academy]Math and Minding[Arcinia]

She was happy to be back in class, it was not too often between training and work she had time to visit school, and it gave her good reason to step out of the robes of the Shinya initiate and into clothes, her hand brushed her hair back and out of her eyes and she smiled widely, it was pleasant to get a chance to wear a nice dress instead of the large robes as well.

Listening intently to the words that came from Izo’s mouth she found herself subconsciously nodding to his questions and answers as if responding to order’s or directives during training, it was strange after so few years of training with the Shinya that her mind had changed she found herself talking less and listening more.

She made a mental note to herself about the basics of the subjects, Multiplication was dealing with groups of things, like the example starfruit could also apply to how people were grouped in a cluster in the class, each table sat a certain number of students and in the simplest aspect she looked from her table to the next, there were three students at each table and four tables so in this situation, there was for groups of three so there was a total of twelve people listening to the teacher give his speech.

On the other hand, division was the exact opposite it was a similar process as the students had been divided into four groups of three from the total of twelve, the two systems were basically the same thematically.

She was always irritated at the sound of chalk, but she dutifully copied down the questions as they came pausing between marking down the questions and looking around the room, she hadn’t been to school in a few days and wondered if any of the faces here were familiar.

Her eyes first went to the table directly behind them in which one, a girl of about her age was giggling at something and whispering to another girl next to her, but as she did so she turned to meet a pair of eyes glancing in her direction.

The boy had an interesting hair color but something that had caught her interest even more so was the eyes, strange patterns of light were in those eyes, something strange and different about them, she smiled at him and waved her fingers in a polite gesture to the boy, he looked like he might be about her age and his eyes made her wonder if there was something different about him other than his strange appearance, not to mention that hair reminded her of something strangely familiar.

While looking around the room and waiting to write down the math problems Moritz noticed the girl at his table meeting his eyes. He was unsure if she was trying to get his attention or not, but seeing as she did not say anything he assumed she was simply trying to be... Friendly. He didn't really get the concept that well, the point of doing something just for appearances sake, but he supposed others placed some importance on it. And so he nodded in return to the gesture, before turning back to the matter at hand.

Class wasn't really a time to be talking, he felt, at least not when other stuff was needing doing. And so he didn't feel the need to start a conversation just then when there wasn't a need for it.

Once the instructor Izo finished copying down the equations he turned back to the class.

"Alright, copy down all of the problems, and then solve them. Once your done bring your board up and I will check your answers."

Moritz nodded and turned to the board, beginning to copy them down and solve them.

First was five times three. Five groups of three. Or... Three groups of five. Five, ten, fifteen. Fifteen being the answer which he scribbled down on the board next to the equals sign along the equation, a pair of horizontal lines.

Next was eight times four... A bit trickier... Four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty.... And on in groups of four until... thirty two. That was the next answer which he also scribbled down.

On the division side was nine divided by three, three went into nine... Three, six, nine, three times total.

Below that was fifteen divided by five... Five, ten, fifteen, the answer being three which was the number of times five went into fifteen.

Moritz did a few more of each, copying them down and solving them by counting things out as Izo had shown before. They were not necessarily hard if the work was put in, but he was still slow at it. He felt in time though he would get better and faster, once he was more used to such math. Like with anything he needed to see the reasoning and logic behind learning something, but it was not hard to see the reasoning behind learning math. Paying for things, buying something, collecting things into groups correctly, being able to count and do more than just simple addition and subtraction was certainly of use.

Once he was done Moritz took his board up to Izo, waiting behind another boy who was having his work checked. Izo marked through a few of the boys lines and sent him back to redo his work, which left the spot open for Moritz to step forward and have his work checked.

Handing over his board Izo went down the list one by one, checking off each one that was correct with a check mark rather than a line through the number like with the prior boys.

Once the last one was confirmed as correct Izo smiled at Moritz. "Good work. All correct. Why don't you help collect the extra chalk as people finish, there are a few boxes over there you can use."

Turning to the class Izo got everyone's attention again.

"Don't forget to turn in your extra chalk once your done. Class is almost over, so we will end a few minutes early. Once your done and have all your problems confirmed as correct you can leave. And if your having trouble you can ask me and we can go over it further."

The boy nodded at her and returned to his work, simple enough of a greeting, perhaps she should try and catch a word with this boy, after class of course there were problems at hand and schoolwork to be done.

Arcinia hummed gently to herself as she began jotting down the answer’s to her questions, she filled in the slots on all the requisite questions. The numbers came to her fairly easily, the concept was at least something not foreign to her, a common saying she had read in her Uncle’s book collection was “Divide and Conquer” to split one’s foes up you must separate unit’s from the whole.

She examined her chalkboard running her finger down the border of it as she looked between the board and her personal board to slate down her answer’s on she seemed to have everything correct but it was impossible to tell until she handed it in to the teacher.

Noticing as she stood up that she had finished a few moments after the boy with the fascinating style about him she stepped towards the teacher’s desk ahead of her were two people including the boy she had waved at who was already in progress chatting with Izo the teacher, her gaze searched around the room as the boy was instructed to gather chalk from the other students as they finished,

The boy in front of her got a slash through one of his answers and it had made her glace down and double-check her work as he heard a small click as Izo ticked off another one of the boy’s answers apparently he had gotten another answer wrong, the teacher told the boy to give a once over of the symbols on the board and compare them to the ones he had written on his own chalkboard.

Pretty sure of herself she handed the chalkboard over to Izo and he went down the board leaving a small checkmark on each of her answers, so far nothing had gone wrong she was nervous she had gotten something wrong, she had an air of perfectionism to her and tried to uphold the standards very well.

“Good job, you got them all correct, please hand in your chalk, class will be over soon”

She walked over to the people with boxes collecting chalk and she placed the wand of chalk into the box of the boy she took the chance as Izo was done speaking and it seemed as if everyone had finished the math problems and turned in their chalk.

“Hello, My name is Arcinia, would you like to talk after class let’s out ?”

At Izo's suggestion Moritz headed over and grabbed a box partially filled with chalk. With that in hand he made the rounds of the tables accepting peoples extra leftover chalk. This did not take too long, only a few chimes, and before long he was back at his own table collecting his own chalk.

It was as he moved along his original table that the girl who had for some unknown reason tried to get his attention once more seemed interesed in talking and getting Moritz attention. For his part Moritz was unsure why, and was not overly concerned about it. Perhaps she had heard something about Moritz, and wanted to confirm it? Many people had noticed his odd eyes before, and upon realizing he was a kelvic had chattered in the background about this. Several fewer, but still several, had noted the odd change in his eyes of late. He was unsure why more had not noticed, since his original goat like square eyes juxtaposed against the explosion that was his Iraso markings. But while he had heard it discussed in the background none had actually asked Moritz about it.

Moritz for his part felt no need to tell people, not really feeling it was their business, but also as they had not asked... Well he was left unsure if he would tell someone if they asked, but was saved from that by not being asked. Instead the other children chattered around him, assuming he was hard of hearing perhaps? Which seemed rather silly a reasoning, since he clearly did not have issues with hearing instructions or lessons. If that was not the reason, he could not imagine another for why the other children would halfway speak in a surreptitious tone about him, but without actually concealing anything.

A young girl, apparently by the name of Arcinia, on the short side Moritz felt, tried once more to get his attention. This time by actually talking, rather than by odd and random gesturing which left Moritz unsure of her desire.

Moritz was about to answer her when he stopped and frowned in concentration. Something she had said confused him. She had asked... if he wanted to talk after class... But she had not actually said that she wanted to. But Moritz could not think why she would ask him if she herself did not want to talk to him... Her roundabout method of asking him something was disconcerting, and it was a effort to work through the odd logic of the question which took several moments to untangle.

Reasoning- assumption the first- the girl was asking if Moritz wanted to talk, but in fact she wanted to talk to him.
Reasoning- assumption the second- the girl desired discussion, but did not want to ask directly, or perhaps was trying to confuse the subject? Or possibly make it seem he was the one to start the conversation... This second one seemed less likely, seeing as its logic did not easily come to a conclusion. What after all would she gain by such a maneuver? So logically it left Moritz with the assumption that the first assumption was the correct one, or some other third one he had not yet thought of.

While it did not take long for Moritz to work through all of the reasoning and logic needed for the simple question the pause in his response would be noticeable as he frowned in concentration and stared off in thought before finally responding.

"That seems a rather confusing way to ask a question, and perhaps a bit deceptive. Why not just ask a question directly? So first your question. I don't really care to or not care to talk after class is let out. I am... What is the word... Ambivalent."

Pausing again, this time more for emphasis and to break up his two distinct thoughts, Moritz continued onward in his response.

"Now as for what you did not ask but what you possibly implied, I am willing to talk, but am ambivalent. I suppose the question then is are you wanting to talk after class? Or do you have something to discuss. Since I am ambivalent to a discussion, and do not have anything to talk about specifically, I suppose it depends on your answer on if you are wanting to talk after class. If so, then I suppose we can proceed."

Before fully working through the logic of the girls question Moritz had nearly responded with a flat no and walked off, but after further reasoning saw the deception of the question and the second layered question beneath the first which implied something other than what had been asked.

Assuming that Arcinia responded with an affirmative response that she did want to talk or did have something specific to discuss, Moritz would follow along after her as she left the class and hear what she had to say.
