43rd Winter, 521av.
Zach passed through the huge skygalss doors of the Bharani Library, nodding to the Shinya that stood outside. The hall inside was massive, hallways heading every which way, and the Drykas paused for a moment to take it all in. He had never been inside a library before, the entire notion of such a place being a foreign one to a Drykas. After a moment he moved over to the imposing desk right in the centre of the room, the woman seated behind it watching him expectantly.
“Welcome, do you have your pebble?”
Zach blinked at her. “My…”
“Pebble.”
She motioned for another person to come over when Zach said he did not have a pebble, and he wondered if he was about to be shown the door. “Okay, well if you would like to go with the Seeker here, we can sort you out and get you entry to the Library.”
A little bewildered, Zach followed the man who was now waiting for him. They entered the tall shelves and the hunter wondered at the sheer amount of information that must be held in all the books. Eventually the Seeker stopped at a table and gestured for Zach to sit, which he did.
“In order for you to have use of the Library, we ask that you offer some information. Do you have a story, or a skill you can write down for me?”
Zach almost laughed, for he had been worried that he was about to receive some sort of interrogation. “Of course.” The Seeker pushed some parchment and a pen towards him. “Any information at all?” The Seeker nodded. “We will gladly accept whatever you wish to share.”
Zach paused with the pen held above the paper for a tick. He had been about to write about the Drykas tradition of feasting, using his bonding as an example, but he found that was a memory he would rather not revisit. Instead, he wrote out instructions on how to build a hunting blind, taught to him last season by Long Stan of the Hunter’s Guild. Satisfied he had it correct, he set the pen down and passed it to the Seeker to read. The man gave a nod, and produced a small white pebble from somewhere within his robe and placed it in front of Zach before gathering the pen and ink.
“Enjoy the Library.”
Left to his own devices, it took Zach a good while to find anything remotely resembling what he was after. He had managed to find a small section where the books were written in what he recognised to be Kontinese. Unfortunately for the Drykas, he couldn’t actually read the titles of any of them, that fact being the reason he was here in the first place.
Zach could say a small handful of words in the language of the Konti, and read even less. He was however, determined to learn but he couldn’t ask Dev’Ania for help. It was for her that he wanted to do it, so it would ruin the whole surprise. He had picked up a few words and phrase or two just from being around her long enough, but nothing that allowed him to speak to her properly.
The Drykas sighed in frustration as he continued opening books, hoping to see some sort of guide, or at least a few words written in common to get an understanding of the subject matter. It seemed it might take him a while…
