The Thane Family

Mortemor Thane the First (senior)

Species: Human
Age: 53
Sex: Male
Profession(s): Former master-thief turned successful merchant.

History:

Thane Sr. began his life as an ambitious youngster with a talent for thievery. Thane refined his craft, and only stole the most valuable of objects from victims who could afford the loss. Having the sense of a businessman, Mortemor would sell whatever he stole, at an affordable rate; but still making a large amount of profit. With much of the money he earned from his bigger steals he would buy trade items, like food or wine, which could be sold to a larger crowd for a much more considerable profit! After years of perfecting the balance between thievery and commerce, the money flow from his many booming businesses accumulated to the point where thieving was no longer necessary, nor productive for his businesses. Realizing that his youthful days of banditry and hooliganism were coming to an end, Mortemor began to ponder the possibilities of settling down and starting a family.

One fateful season, Mortemor made a visit to the city of Wind Reach. There, while acquiring some of the Inartan’s famous glasswork, he met and fell in love with an Inartan named Seryn who worked as a glass artisan. The two moved away as soon as Seryn was able to; leaving the high reaches of the mountain town for the bustling ports of Zeltiva. Being that the port of Zeltiva is so rich in knowledge, and trade, Mortemor was able to easily set up a successful shop to support himself and his bride. Mortemor had many difficulties getting Seryn pregnant, but the two wanted a child so strongly that they continued to try. On the day they knew Seryn was with child for certain, they made a pact to name the first born after Mortemor Sr., no matter the sex.

Seryn Thane

Species: Inarta
Age: 42
Sex: Female
Profession(s): Artisan Glasswork Artist

History:

Seryn grew up in Wind Reach, she mastered glasswork at a young age and continued to sharpen her craft in order to maintain her rank in the inartan society.

Mortemor Sr. arrived in Wind Reach when Seryn had just turned 27. She fell in love with him and his sarcastic wit quickly, and ran away from the Inarta. Seryn became Mortemor Sr.’s wife and apprentice, often selling many of her glass works in his shops and bringing in quite a bit of miza with each commission. Although Seryn enjoyed her life as Mortemor Sr.’s business partner and lover, there was nothing she enjoyed more than playing the role of mother.
Mortemor Jr. Became the center of Seryn’s world when she born. Seryn wanted to make sure that Mortemor knew the best of both worlds and did her best to incorporate Inartan life into Mortemor’s, giving her a strict and vigorous parenting structure. She made sure to teach her how to craft intricate glass beads with the texture of crystal lace. She also told Mortemor Jr. about the ways of the inartan people, and especially knew how much her daughter loved hearing stories about the eagle riders. When Mortemor Jr. turned 10, Seryn gave her her first bird which was a ‘Midnight Magpie’, which the young girl promptly named Nevi. She also taught Mortemor Jr. how to enjoy hard work, and how to appreciate small details.

Species: Mixed Blood | Half Inarta/Half Human
Birth: Winter, 491 AV | Age: 20
Sex: Female

History:

Born to an artisan mother, and rogue-gone-merchant father, Mortemor Jr. had a very busy child hood. Some days she would spend hours in her mother’s workshop crafting glass ornaments, and other days she would work the front of her father’s store; picking up skills in both glass crafting and bartering. On certain days her mother would take her to practice shooting and stringing a bow. When it was her father’s turn to teach her a skill, he chose to show her something he thought would come in handy for his daughter’s future. Late at night, Mortemor Sr. and Jr. would spend all hours of the night assembling and disassembling locks by candle light, from large hefty iron locks to tricky puzzle locks. He wanted to teach his pup how to manipulate all types of tumblers with miniscule objects like needles, or scrapes of metal or iron. In her free time, her father would encourage her to visit the City Library, and often boasted about how proud he would be if his daughter enrolled in the university.

Mortemor Jr. had other dreams for her future though, and when she did go to the City Library, the only things she ever read were books about foreign lands and strange creatures. Her favorites were literature about the Inarta Culture, and their legends. When Mortemor came of age she had fixed in her thoughts how much she longed to be an endal, and no matter how profusely her parents pleaded with her to change her mind; reasoning that it would be too difficult to assimilate to Inartan life. Nothing mattered to her, the young woman’s mind was set.

Ultimately her parents decided that this journey would help their youngster mature into a stronger person, and help her to define her sense of purpose in life. They allowed her leave, first offering all the assistance they could, but were turned down by Mortemor, who simply wanted enough money from them to get to the next Region.

Physical Description

Mortemor stands at a 'whopping' 5'1", with a somewhat fuller build due to her weight (120lbs), height and muscle tone. Her eyes are large but usually half lidded as though with disinterest, but they are shaded a beautiful green that seems to shift tone in the light. If one were to look closely they could spot the flecks of gold near the center of her pupils. She has pale, smooth skin, being that she has been well taken care of by her Artisan mother, and Merchant father. She has also inherited a birthmark from her father that sits near the lower left side of her bottom lip. Her hair is a Flaming-red, which is usually carelessly thrown around her shoulders.

Mortemor's attire is never anything impressive. when it comes to clothes, practically takes presence over luxury. She is usually found sporting loose fitting men's clothes, that include nothing but long-sleeve shirts, pants, trousers, and long shorts.Seldom is she ever caught in a dress.

Mortemor sports a few glass beads and a feather her mother gave her in her hair, weaving them onto a single braid that hangs from the lower strands of her hair. The most precious bead Mortemor adorns is called the “Winged Hope”; it is shaped in the form of wings and shines like crystal, often changing colors from a deep purple or blue, to a bright silver.

Personality

o Mortemor has a mix of both Human habits and Inarta passion! At times she can be very abrasive and her first instinct would be to charge head long into a situation, but her human side is constantly making the young woman doubt herself. Therefore there is a constant struggle between the spirited Inarta side who wants to “pull-no-punches”, and the human side, which just wants to step back for a moment and assess the situation.

o At times she can be very humorous, either outright joking, or hiding her sense of humor beneath a well placed sarcastic quip. Other times, she can be downright scornful, but unlike other Inarta she is able to conceal her anger and distaste, if need be.

o Naive. Mortemor is very young and has many questions about the world that are still unanswered.

o Above all else Mortemor is always polite... Or at least tries to be! She sees the world as a giant school house where everywhere you go, and everyone you meet offers a new opportunity to learn something! Therefore she doesn’t like to risk insulting anyone when first meeting them.

Ethics

o Mortemor has a strong sense of following through with things she starts! But she is still in the process of building a standard of what is right in the world and what is wrong. Although, she does abide by one rule, and holds everyone in the same accordance; “Be honest enough not to cheat! And be wise enough not to be cheated!”. It is a motto her father would continually spout as he straightened the shelves of his storefront.

Likes

o Books, scrolls, parchment! Anything that is filled with knowledge or stories! Mortemor has a great love for the written word, and often purchases books during her travels; if not only to pass the time with a good read, but to educate herself.

o Sculptures, paintings, art, finely cut jewels, glass and other refined things like satin, silk, and works of literary genius also catch this halfling’s eyes. Not because it is luxurious; she admires the amount of work and quality put into a piece. She hates settling for anything she knows to be sub-par.

o Hard Work! Mortemor enjoys the idea and act of doing hard work and earning her keep. In fact she will take on just about any job and do it cheerfully, so long as the pay fits the labor!

o Birds! Another secret love of Mortemor’s… get her into an aviary and you may have trouble getting her to come out again! Mortemor could stand around for hours marveling at birds of all sorts and shapes. Her favorite is her pet Magpie given to her by her mother.

Dislikes

o Sleeping on the ground! (No one enjoys a stiff back in the morning…)

o Failing! Mortemor hates to fail! She takes most unsuccessful undertakings quite hard, but usually tries to learn from the experience.

o Eating things she can’t identify!

o Water! Although Mortemor Jr. Grew up in a city near the docks, she can’t stand the water. It could be possibly due in part to the fact that she has nearly drowned several times in her life by ‘seemingly’ complete freak accidents.

o Getting cheated! Seriously, she might get into a fist fight if she doesn't think she's getting a fair share.

o Violence! Although Mortemor may face many battles in the future, she never hopes that it comes to harming another being. More times than naught, she will try to use her wit to get her out of some sticky situations.
