Purpose: Klane's Intro To The Inverted

The troup came through the gate in the early morning hours when dawn was still stretching across the sky. The leader, a man named Barin Unas, rode the back of a snow white bear. It looked to be like one of the mighty polar bears that were common in Avanthal, but it was smaller, more the size of a grizzly and it had pink eyes. The bear lumbered with a rolling gait that made Barin's ride look smooth. The man himself looked human, a tad Vantha, though his painted white face and his shadowy eyes made his exact subrace hard to pin down. His hair was concealed under a green headscarf while his pants seemed to be made up of tattered green rags all patchwork sewn together with fringe that made his legs appear to dance on the side of the bear. His chest was bare, which was unusual for the coldness of the season (though if he was from Avanthal, Syliras' climate would seem tropical). A group was with him - a team of horses, a wagon, and a banner that advertised a traveling show.

The wagon's banner was hung with an inverted triangle and the people walking along side of it tumbled, played musical instruments, and laughed spreading candy to children that gathered around them. The guards at the gate smiled, seemed to recognize them, and then gave them permission to camp in the Northwest Square - a place reserved for traveling shows and large parties of visitors that wouldn't fit within the castle itself.

Klane would see them, naturally, and the leader himself, Barin, would offer him a friendly smile. But they'd be busy for the next few hours... erecting a tent, settling into the square, and stretching tight ropes. They were obviously getting ready for a show.

Timestamp: 50th Day of Winter

Klane woke up and rubbed his eyes. He was still tired and as such he considered going back to sleep right then. It wasn't like he had an appointment to get to, he was just a simple street performer after all. Right?

Before he could make a decision, the troupe marched in. Children's laughter and the noise of musical instruments quickly followed. Oh great, how am I going to get back to sleep in this noise, the Kelvic thought to himself bitterly. Klane tried rolling over to continue his slumber, but the noise was too penetrating. Angrily he stood up from his dirt covered bedroll and went to see what the commotion was about, and what he saw surprised him.

Klane watched as a human seemed to glide in on a polar bear. The bear seemed small for his breed, and the man was bare-chested. Yet somehow the cold did not seem to effect him the least bit. Klane then saw the guards dismiss themselves, and walk in same general direction the man on the polar bear was heading. Curious, Klane decided to follow them and see what was so important they had to wake him up.

In the end the Kelvic found himself in the Northwest Square as the group began setting tents and tightropes. It was obvious they were preparing for a show, and Klane, with nothing better to do now that they'd stolen the spot he liked to perform his own music in, decided to stay and watch.

After a few minutes he got bored of standing around and realized that it'd take awhile before they actually performed. Well, I got nothing else to do, mind as well offer up a hand, Klane acknowledged, walking over to where the troupe was setting up. He tapped one worker's shoulder and spoke simply, "Need a hand?"

By the time Klane asked if he could help, they were laying out a big tent that looked taller than one of the adjacent buildings made of stone. It had an octagon shape and had eight trailing ropes from the peak. Two men inside were erecting poles, clamping them together with huge sleeves, that extended their eight foot poles (the length of the wagon bed) into a thirty six foot main support beam. Barin, the bear rider, smiled and placed a rope in Klane's hand. "Sure. We're putting up the tent. You can help, if you'd like. Hold that, its an anchor rope. I'm Barin, who might you be?" He said, going to fetch a stake. He drove one into the loose soil between cobbles in the courtyard and showed Klane how to tie the rope around the stake to secure the tent. He then ran around the parameter and drove eight more stakes which people all grabbed onto. And following his 'HEAVE!" directions, they started pulling, drawing up the sides of the tent until they were lofting high in the air. Then the command 'SECURE" came singing through the air, and all the men were expected to stoop down and secure the tent to the pegs like Barin had demonstrated to Klane already.

Once the tent was up, a girl his age pressed a handful of plants and stone blocks into his hands. "We need to put up the benches while they finish the outside booths." She said, grinning. "Barin said you were volunteering to help. I'm Keri." She said, all but fluttering off. Kelvic, there was no doubt about it, though what type was rather hard to tell. Bird maybe? Squirrel? She had a cheerful nervousness about her that screamed athletic prowess. But otherwise it was hard to tell.

The whole group worked on deep into the afternoon, and strangely enough they treated Klane just like he was one of them. They set up benches by laying out blocks and balancing planks on them. Booths went up and they filed them with stuffed toys and odd things that made noise - wind chimes Barin called them. Then later, rolls of tickets came out when the crowd started to gather. There were also arrangements made so a local bakery delivered cookies and treats in the form of kegs of fruit juice, ale, and water set out on a large table. Then later, when a crowd had started to gather, Keri came back. "Come with me! You helped set up so you can help sell refreshments and then see the show for free." The girl said, dancing along. But first... she took him to a makeup table and they caked his face with white, much like Barins, and painted an inverted triangle on the back of his neck with grease paint. Then he joined Keri at the refreshment table, where he sold cookies for copper mizas and dished out ale, water, and juice in the patrons own mugs.

He found himself drawn to the cookies, though whether he ate some or not was his own choice. Keri snitched one or two, and gestured to him to do the same if he wanted. Meanwhile, business was brisk.

They sold out of the baked goods as the first act started. Keri ferreted the money away, and with her own painted face, lead him into the large tent with the crowd. There was at least a couple of hundred people crowded into the tent for the show. It was hot within the press of bodies, but pleasantly so because it was actually cold outside still being winter. Klane might have normally been uncomfortable, but with Keri there, it wasn't so bad at all. As he passed through the tent flaps, expecting to take a seat, something odd happened to his clothing. Instead of his usual garb he was wearing a glittering silver tunic, black leggings, and silver boots topped with bells. His instrument was clutched at his back, and he found himself skipping along with Keri, not to a seat, but down the center of the seating area and onto the main stage. They were by no means the first act, but the crowd was obviously enjoying themselves and primed for more entertainment.

They walked out into the center of the ring that served as a stage and Keri took a bow, urging Klane to do the same thing too. She turned to him, grinned, and said... "Play for me... so I can sing!"

"Sure. We're putting up the tent. You can help, if you'd like. Hold that, its an anchor rope. I'm Barin, who might you be?" Klane turned towards Barin as he began to speak and nodded his understanding. He grasped the rope, a bit tighter than he needed to, and his knuckles turned a little white.

"Hello Barin, I'm Klane. Nice to meet you. Hey," Klane began with the slightest hint of nervousness, but before he could continue Barin shouted for everyone to heave. The Kelvic followed the example set by everyone else holding a rope, and he pulled on his. Once everyone was done Barin yelled his second command. Klane dropped to his knees to attach his rope to the tent. It wasn't perfect, but it would hold. Yet... Just in case... Klane thought to himself as he made sure his knot was tied right. He tugged a little on the rope. Once he was happy with the tie, Klane took a step back to examine the tent. It was probably the biggest tent he'd ever seen, and if not it was at least it was the tallest. He turned to find Barin and ask what this whole thing was about, but before he could run after the man a girl came up to him.

"We need to put up the benches while they finish the outside booths. Barin said you were volunteering to help. I'm Keri," the girl said with a grin, putting some blocks of stone and a few planks into his hands. He looked at her, she was obviously a Kelvic. Klane was always less nervous around his own kind, and it was no different here.

"Call me Klane, and just tell me what to do," there was no hint of nervousness in his voice this time, as there was when he introduced himself to Barin. As they worked, which took up a decent portion of the afternoon, Klane was treated not like a stranger, but instead he felt as though he was one of them. Booths were set with toys and other odd items, which Barin called wind chimes when Klane asked. Once everything was set up, Keri came back.

"Come with me! You helped set up so you can help sell refreshments and then see the show for free." Once she was done speaking Klane nodded in gratefulness. He was excited to see what they had set up, and selling refreshments was a small price to pay in order to save his precious Mizas. She walked, or really danced, along to a makeup table. Despite his complaints he eventually gave in to the makeup artists, understanding that everyone helping out would look like him, and he allowed them to cover his face in a white. Then, the ever so intriguing inverted triangle was painted onto the back of Klane's neck.

The two Kelvics then went to the refreshment stand, where people came and bought
food. At one point Keri took a cookie for herself, and Klane, noticing he was craving one as well, followed her actions thankfully.

Upon noticing how many people where coming to see this show Klane began to wonder what was in store for him tonight.

Once they sold out, Keri lead Klane into the large tent. Again he noticed the huge number of people that came to see the performance. They squeezed passed warm bodies until they came to a seat. He was about to sit down when something strange, to say the least, happened. The Kelvic found himself in wearing a glittering tunic, black leggings, and boots topped with bells, yet he could have sworn he was wearing his normal worn clothing a mere second ago. Stranger still he felt a sudden weight on his back. He looked back to find his mandolin had also mysteriously appeared, and to top it all off he was skipping. In the end he found himself on the main stage.

"Play for me... so I can sing!" Keri started suddenly. Klane was more confused than ever, as he had no intention of being part of the show, only watching it. Let alone have what seemed to be magic casted on him and his clothing. Not wanted to ruin the crowds buzz of enjoyment the Kelvic nodded and started to play. He tried his best, and hoped that many of his mistakes would be drowned out by the shouting people below.

"OOC"Ohhhh! Planks! You spelled it plants, and I got confused >.<, and why does everyone want me to sing!?!?!?

And I didn't start playing too much yet because I wasn't sure if someone was going to improve the sound of Klane's playing

Sorry!Sorry about the plants verses planks! It's spell checker gone wild!

Klane soon learned that no one was paying attention to his playing. Even though, oddly enough, as he moved the instrument from his back to his hands, he felt a confidence infuse him that made him feel... somehow larger than life as he stood on the stage. The crowd roared as Keri took her first steps, and as she began to dance, the whole audience was riveted. Each step, each sway, each beat he played - it didn't matter if it was a fast or slow song - the girl before him changed. Even her costume changed. First she was a dark-haired beauty and then she was a pale blond Konti. The next swirl she was an over endowed buxom and then a thin waif with barely no curves at all. She danced her heart out even as her face changed and there was a magic behind the motions that pulled at Klane's heart and made him realize that from one step to another she became first one man's fantasy, then another, then another until there was no man in the audience that was not wholly enthralled by her performance.

Oddly enough, she only kept her eyes on Klane. As she danced, it was as if she danced only for him. Maybe the rest of the men in the audience had the same impression, maybe not, but with Keri and him... it was different. It wasn't a seduction of sorts. It was more of a conversation - an exploration of possibilities. And as he played for her, he felt himself doing something he'd never done before. He arched from one rift to another on his mandolin changing music as fluidly as she changed her face. It was a heady exciting experience as energy seemed to flow into him through her dance steps, powering his hands, making him pour himself into the art of creating sound. He knew his playing was sub par, but this wasn't about his skill at music. It was as if Keri and himself wove an illusion between them that had the audience on their feet, screaming, clapping, as he played faster, higher, lower, more boldly with each pluck of his fingers.

He felt alive.... fully alive. And the thrill it brought him was like none other he'd ever experienced. With Keri he'd made magic on that stage and he knew it because a power flowed through him that was so alien and yet so welcoming that he couldn't have possibly have understood it or believed it if someone had presented it to him as a story.

The moment lasted only a short while before relativity came back, the power withdrew, and Keri was taking a bow to the last notes of his instrument. The crowd was on their feet roaring, stomping, cheering, even as the girl stepped back, bowed again, and gestured at Klane. The roar was suddenly for him as well, and he felt it sweep around him, buoy him up and catch him with the magic of the moment.

The eyes of the little kelvic dancer met his and for a moment there was a power in them... a piercing glare that ate him alive and burned him all the way to his soul. Her lips smiled, and for an instant she seemed almost male, almost someone completely different, as she whispered "You'll do fine. More than fine. Welcome to my fold." And then it was just Keri standing there, breathless and sweating. She laughed, tipping her head back and hugged Klane spontaneously. "That was great! Just great! You played like you owned the house! Thank you so much.. thats the most fun I've had in forever!" She said, catching his hand and dragging him off the stage a far different way than they'd come on it. They ducked a prop, wove through some ropes held together with pulleys, and came out into another tent adjacent the big one that was filled with soft seats - couches, pillows, chairs - which held an enormous buffet table. Barin wasn't there, but several other cast members were. Keri went right for the food, dragging Klane with her.

And in a hearbeat he realized... he was starving. Sure enough, the table had very rare meat and a wide assortment of other foods and drinks he could indulge in. She was busy filling a plate with bread and fruit, still in many ways dancing excitedly. Then, she took a seat by a brazier used to warm the tent, and began to eat greedily... replacing calories shed' lost dancing up on stage.

There were other acts that followed, but they weren't called back to the stage. Soon enough, the event was over for the day, and the whole crew gathered around to partake of the feast and unwind. Klane was truthfully treated just like one of them.

The experience was nothing short of purely amazing for Klane. As he played his mandolin, Keri danced, her entire form seeming to shift with each and every step. Klane found himself lifting a fist from the instrument at times just to rub his eyes and make sure he wasn't hallucinating. His thoughts were almost nonexistent, as the music, along with the surreal image before him, took over his every sense. At points he may have vaguely admired the grace, and spectacular beauty of Keri and her dance, and then a stray thought may ask how he was playing so much better than his usual amateur performances. Other than those smallest of thoughts, though, Klane just gave in to whatever strange force was manipulating his emotions in such a happy way. There may have been points where he questioned the obvious magic taking place, but before those thoughts could fully form, he'd forget about it and decide to just have fun. He came to the Northwest Square somewhat of a nervous wreck, just asking if he could help out and see whatever show they had prepared, and now the Kelvic was having a spectacular time.

Unfortunately, as Klane knew all too well by now, good times always have to end. When the music faded and Keri stopped her dance, that was when Klane was forced back into reality. It was a more gradual transition, though. First, he was in a state of total merriment, and even that was an understatement. Then, as the song ended Klane was roared on from the crowd. Never before had he felt so much like a king when he ended a performance on the streets. Then, at last, his descent from godhood was complete. He was back to being as normal as one could be after such a show.

"You'll do fine. More than fine. Welcome to my fold." An unfamiliar voice started, and it took a minute for Klane to realize it was Keri again. Hugging Klane she continued, "That was great! Just great! You played like you owned the house! Thank you so much.. thats the most fun I've had in forever!" Then she proceeded to once again grab the Kelvic and haul him off stage. By now, Klane was getting used to the always overjoyed Keri, and sincerely enjoyed her company.

He soon realized he too was starved, and when the two finally arrived at a buffet Klane followed Keri's actions and began to fill a plate with an assortment of meat. When the girl sat down on one of the many comfy looking seats, Klane picked a spot next to her. After he'd finished his first serving of the delicious food, Klane spoke for the first time since the performance. "Thanks, that was... Awesome." He grinned at lost for any other words. The usually mistreated ex-slave reflected that he probably hadn't had so much fun in his entire short life.

Soon the rest of the show was over, and the other performers gathered for another feast. Klane was still stuffed from the buffet prior, but it was impossible to hold back when he had such an array of amazing aromas laid out before him. Especially considering he'd spent most of his life eating raw meat, and never had a chance to enjoy such pleasures. They treated him like a member of some extended family, and he accepted the treatment gratefully. He joined in conversations and wished that the whole event didn't have to end. It was all too great.

[Syliras Quest] Right Side Wrong (Klane)

Postby Laeraix Cerys on May 14th, 2010, 5:31 pm

Laeraix watched the show and was enraptured by it, as the players performed each act with the grace of a people that had perfected a craft that was solely their own. The acts left no audience member disappointed as exotic animals were brought across the stage and acrobats flew from the rafters with remarkable ease. For Laeraix, it was odd to see a people so at home in a place that was the opposite of a home by society’s standards. Somehow, she doubted these performers cared about how society judged them. She didn’t mind spending a few mizas on a ticket to a show that seemed so enticing. Lately, her nights had been filled with mediocre entertainment in the middle of bars, and she had wondered where the legendary charm of Syliras had escaped to. Surely it was not amid the overly filled cobblestone streets that felt so foreign. Maybe the city wasn’t her home, but she hoped this performance would be a turning point in her day.

The animals on stage amazed her, but favorite act was near the end. A girl danced on the stage to an instrument that Laeraix had never seen or heard before. Rhythms and melodies changed every instant, but the effect was nothing short of pleasant. The whole night had built up to this crescendo, and she was amazed at the versatility of the troupe. Had they collected every talented person on the face of Mizahar? The girl seemed to be changing not only her dance steps but her appearance as well. Laeraix stood up and moved as close as she could to the edge of the broad stage. Her eyes had not deceived her, as she had first thought they had. The young girl truly was changing everything about her appearance from her hair down to her toes. Her hair was soft spun gold one second and rich brown a minute later. A bold and voluptuous body made men hoot and holler while a lithe one made them draw in their breaths. Laeraix was as entranced as the crowd and she found her smiling at the end of the act and cheering with the rest the riotous crowd. The dancer and the boy bowed and the crowds screaming rose to a level of noise that was almost incomprehensible. She found herself yelling along with the rest of them.

A few acts followed but they seemed bland in comparison. The crowd was slowly filing out of the massive tent, and their excitement flooded onto the streets of Syliras. She wouldn’t be surprised if she found many of them in bars later that night, drunk and still speaking of the sensual lady that danced for only them. The tent had seemed so small when it was filled with patrons, but it was now empty, save for a few lingering souls such as herself. They were overly excited and still spoke of their favorite acts and how they would get a few more mizas to see the next show. Laeraix considered doing the same. Maybe if she watched the girl a few more times she could figure out the secret to the camouflage she used with such skill. Only it wasn’t camouflage, because it hid nothing except for the girl’s true identity. This was the exact opposite of camouflage, with effects that were more versatile than any camouflage she had ever seen or wore. The girl enhanced every aspect of her appearance to the point that it was impossible to tell what was real and what wasn’t. She hadn’t expected to enjoy the show as much as she had, and she wished to thank the performers for the lovely show. A few mizas didn’t seem like enough for such an experience.

A loud source of noise near the back of the tent proved to be the troupe. They had converged around a massive table that was laden with meats, fruits and delicacies of every assortment. She hesitated for a second. It seemed rude to interrupt them during such a feast, but she still wanted to thank them. Hopefully, they wouldn’t be too angry at her. She stepped forward and smiled as some of the performers faced her. Though they varied in size and shape, the performers all wore elaborate face paint that centered around inverted triangles. Laeraix took a deep breath and spoke.

“I just wanted to thank you for the performance. It was wonderful, all the talented things you could do. I’ve never seen anything like it and you all seemed-“

She stopped suddenly when she realized that she was rambling. She smiled apologetically and spoke again:

“You seemed so at home here. But, anyways… thank you.”
