6th-Fall-511 AV

It was another day. Another day Keido needed to get familiar with his weapons. But after yesterday he knew that the spear was too heavy for him to wield for too long. No, he needed to practice it more and more until he can attack effectively with it. So the plan today was to bring his spear, his net and a few weights he could wrap. Why the weights? He will be experiencing it soon enough.

He started with a warm-up. To continue thrusting the spear he needed to get his arms used to moving front and back. Even if he was no stranger to the moves which he used for his punches, the weight of the spear threw them off. Keido got on the ground with his arms at the front and his chest between then. He kicked his feet which were behind to be sure that he would not slip. Then he brought his chest down while he bend his arms outwards, keeping his body as stiff as possible to do some push-ups.

His breathing was the key to keeping this up for as long as he needed, everytime he went up, he inhaled. And when he went down, he exhaled. A dozen repetitions, his palms started to sweat. Another dozes, they started to slip. And at around thirty on his way down, his hands flew up from the accumulated sweat and he fell on his chin.

The pain made him decide that he had enough and was prepared to continue further. Keido needed to calm down after the fall. He rolled in place until he was facing up. Then he folded his knees. Crossing his arms over his chest so that they will not interfere, he started putting pressure on his feet. Pushing downwards, they traveled along the legs up the hips where he made it stay. Then he bend his hips, pushing his body upwards for some sit ups.

Like the push ups, Keido kept his breathing in line with his movements. Everytime his body went up, he inhaled. Everytime it dropped down, he exhaled. His hips were starting to feel the strain of his body weight and he started to feel tired after a while. Instead of his hands, it was his legs slipping now as they lost energy. They started to drag themselves further and further while they straightened up everytime he completed a repetition. Until right before Keido could feel that his knees could no longer keep his legs up. It was his final time going up. Inhaling, he got up and stayed in place.

The physical preparations were complete. And now it was time to sharpen his mind for the training ahead. All this while he continued his breathing on the rhythm as he warmed up and took a proper seat on the ground. With all the strain and the pain he was now experiencing, he had to really pay attention to the breath which moved past his lips just to retain control.

Lucky the spot he chose for today was quiet so Keido can really focus on this. He started to think what he needed to do today. He was going to try and use his spear. He shut his eyes to envision it. Each breath he took saw him stabbing his spear. Then he started to take deeper breaths. The spear started going further. Until his lungs could not hold it anymore. That was as far as the spear would take him he knew.

That satisfied Keido. But he needed to go further. Now in his mind, he saw a net in front of him replacing the spear. It was the same. Today he wanted to try something new. He saw the woman disarm him last time so why couldn't he do the same? But the excitement was far too much for him to maintain this mental images for long. He saw the net going forward and back, forward and back trying to get whatever he aimed at. His breaths started to get erratic. The net began to become wavy and was thrown at irregular intervals. Finally it faded. His concentration was broken.

But now Keido had a rough idea of what he had to do. He picked up his spear. He will begin with this one since it worked so much better in his mind. The weights had their role to play here and Keido took them up. Wrapping it around the shaft as close to the point as possible.

Now push it forward! (Solo)

Postby Keido on September 13th, 2011, 6:25 pm

Keido took the spear with one hand and tried to carry it up. But it was not even straightened that it fell down as soon as he did. He had a grin of satisfaction on his face. This would work. It was like killing two birds with one stone. He will get more used to stabbing with the spear accurately and he can try and develop his arm muscles further. The only downside was that he would not get to use the spear as long as he wanted. The weight will soon tire him out.

He would try using one hand. At least for a while. Then when he gets tired he can switch. He will do this over and over again until his hands cannot even lift the heavy spear anymore. Then he will work on two hands until it drops. Keido decided that today he will tire himself out, push himself to the limits and go somemore until he finally collapsed.

And so he did. It started with his left hand. Compared to how he thought about it earlier, it was hard. No sooner than he stuck the spear out, the head started falling and falling until it clattered on the ground even if his hand was on it. But Keido did not want that result. He flicked his wrist upwards as hard as he could, causing the spear to follow. It pointed to the middle, then it pointed up. When it started to fall, Keido started to push his arm forward. While the spear did follow, it followed pointing up as well. Away from anywhere he wanted to target. This would be no good in a real fight.

If his left was not strong enough, then the right should work. The spearhead remained on the ground, keeping its place while Keido tossed the shaft to the side on the awaiting hand which caught it. Then he pulled his arm up again to try and lift the spear. It was no good. But why? In anycase, he had yet to try with his arm. Keido flicked his wrist up again, flipping the spear upwards. Something was different. Because this time he could feel less of a strain on his wrist while he tried to keep the spear up. Even if when he pushed it to the front it still was the head dragging on the top. There was something different. But what?

Keido continued repeating the same things. Throwing the handle to one hand, flicking the wrist and thrusting his arm forward. Everytime he kept his eye to each stage. He watched as his hand caught the handle, how the shaft moved when he flicked the wrist and how the spearhead started to descend. Then he finally realized after watching how he caught the spear each time. His hands. They caught a different part of the shaft each time. When it was harder to control it was further from the head compared how easy it was when his hand was closer. The secret to his problems he concluded, was the distance.

So Keido moved his hand as far front as possible before lifting the spear. When he did pointing it straight to the front, the shaft went along his whole arm. But could it really be called a spear now? The strength of the spear was that it could keep enemies at bay. Not how strong it could pierce through. This would not work out. He might as well continue using his kodachi. So now Keido had to find out how to make it work.

Keido began with a quick stab while keeping his hand as close to the spearhead as possible. Then he loosened his grip on the spear a little and pulled back his arm. This allowed him to place some distance between his hand and the spearhead before he gripped the shaft again. Then after that he thrust the spear again. It was still too easy. He continued. Another fluid motion of loosening his grip over the shaft and pulling his arm back before quickly gripping it again and thrusting it forward. He did this again and again until finally the spear started dropping mid thrust. Then he remembered which spot he was holding on previously. That would be the spot he needed to keep his hand on to thrust the spear properly.

That was only for one arm. He needed to test it out with his next. But since he knew roughly which spot, that was the beginning placement of his hand. Keido gripped the spot tightly and pulled back. The spear still did not fall. That was good so far. Then he pushed his arm forward in a thrust and that was as good as it gets. The spear started to fall again. While it was still on the ground, Keido pushed his hand to the front of the shaft a little and lifted the spear again. Going through the same motions. It was the same as his right arm but very different. Instead of moving down the shaft he was not moving his hand up. Until he reached its sweet spot.

"Damn!" Keido exclaimed suddenly in realization.

All this time he kept thrusting his spear repeatedly, it had an added weight. From the weights strapped around the shaft right below the head. In a real fight he won't have that. Keido made a sigh of disappointment. He already wasted so much time on the spear today. Though no doubt he will get stronger using it as a weight and more accurate in thrusting it, he would have to readjust the positions to get the most out of this. Probably next time right before he needed a fight. He wanted to move on to the next stage he had planned.

After all that, he needed some time to rest now. Keido put his spear back on the ground and took a seat beside it. All that spearing. It made his limbs feel like throbbing. And his chest. It felt like it was about to burst. He was using his arms too much. And the strong sudden movements were taking their toll on him right now.

Keido started to cough and choke suddenly when he realized this. His lungs. They just felt so strained. It was wearing out. Keido hurriedly shut his eyes and tried to concentrate again. His point of focus was his chest. And paying attention on nothing else, it can feel every little bit it expanded and released. He coughed again. That was not good. He had to stop this. Knowing that he cannot continue if he didn't. Keido took a deep breath.

But he went too far and started choking on it. Quickly he tried to exhale but he was out of breath again. Then he inhaled again. In his panicked state he did it too fast. Keido opened his eyes and thrust his arm in front of him for support. Coughing more and more. Then he spat out a little. Whatever was choking him was cleared then but he had to make sure. Rapidly he breathed again and when he did not choke, he straightened his back and adjusted his seat before going to close his eyes again.

With his throat cleared, he started to breath again. First slowly but taking in as much as possible. He did not want a repeat of what happened earlier. Then he increased it. Even he it was getting steadier, his heart was beating fast. Too fast. It was because of the training earlier and his choking fit. Keido had to calm himself. He took even deeper breaths and breathed out just as much. As if trying to expel all the mess he had inside himself to try and fix his body.

He had no idea how long he sat there. And all he did was breathing exercises. Very unproductive but necessary for him if he wanted to continue. In a way, he took it as rest that he needed. And he kept on breathing and breathing like there was nothing else for him. Finally when he felt that he was in control, that his heart and lungs did not feel like they wanted to burst each time he took a breath. He opened his eyes and took the spear again. This time his dominant hand grasping on that sweet spot and the other slightly behind it on the shaft. Keido was going to try and control it with two hands now.

But even with two hands, the tired and aching state of his limbs did not make things easier. He actually felt like the spear which was now on his hands is heavier. He contemplated removing the weights strapped on the shaft but where will that put him? Keido decided against it. He thought of this as an investment. Whatever energy he lost at this moment trying to lift up the spear will be used as his strength when he recovered and had a fight.

Keido lifted his spear. Just like he lifted his leg below it at the same time. They both traveled in unison. Once they got high enough, Keido stamped his foot down. With it, the spear came down as well. At the feel of the impact, Keido thrust the spear forward with two hands. The force transferred from the leg right up to his arms and the spear. But it went too fast. Added with the weight already on it, the spear went faster. And Keido had already been working for too long. His hands were also slippery with sweat. Even gripping hard was not enough to stop its movements and the spear flew forward.

The sweat on his palms were wiped on his shirt before he headed to the spear to continue practicing. Keido lifted the spear up and gripped it with two hands again. He twisted his hands on it, feeling his skin moving as well to make sure it won't slip again Sure of this, he stood and thrust the spear again in front of him. Again with the added weight in front it traveled far and nearly brought Keido falling to the front.

He was lucky that he was just starting off with these weapons or he can call these failures as due to his lack of experience. Keido lifted his arms again. He did not want to keep falling forward. He had to control his strength. Keido stood there just looking at the spear and started breathing to feel himself. He breathed slow, then harder and harder. Feeling the breath in his lungs and moving to his body, his arms. Keido continued breathing as he closed his eyes and twisted his hands on the shaft again to make sure it was there. Right now he wanted to control his strength and not his spear.

With his eyes still closed he focused on the spear and then threw it forward. He felt his arms moving forward with the spear after the initial movement then he pulled his arms back a little to try and stop the spear. Not too much. He only did enough to stop. And he kept his arms as stiff as possible as he did. This time he did not fall forward because of the weight.

Keido opened his eyes satisfied with what he had done. He successfully balanced his weight with that of the spear. Now with his eyes open he kept his sights on the spearhead again as he repeated the movements. He saw the point that the head traveled when he began to stop it. Committing it to memory. Again he tried for more thrusts until the spear finally started dropping. It was enough practicing with the spear for one day.

Now push it forward! (Solo)

He has been wanting to try this when he saw it. Catching a weapon with his net. And he had the best weapon available. His spear. Especially with its weights. Once he stabbed it on the ground, it will just be like someone who was holding on to it that he needed to pry it from.

Now he had to prepare it. Keido stared at the ground in front of him. It was a little bit damp. That was good. Then he lifted his foot back. He was already tired from using the spear. He was going to use another limb to help him. There was no sense in aiming this time. HIs target was just so big. Then he kicked his foot to the front. But he misjudged the ground. His kick pushed his toes in with a cracking sound. Though there was no injury because of his shoes, it still hurt.

To dig up now that he knew his foot would be a problem, he took out his kodachi. Keido held it up to the air by his side. Then he sliced it into the ground. But it was not deep enough. Either again because of the ground's hardness of because of his tired arms. Keido needed to slice in stronger to get in deeper. So he used his other arm for support. He put a fist on the upper part of the arm and pushed on it just as the kodachi started travelling to the ground. Then he hit his arm with the fist harder, the punch putting much more force to make the blade travel faster. It sliced into the ground creating an incision in it.

But Keido was not done just yet. Now he started with the kodachi in front of him instead of at the side. Keido held the hilt with both his hands pointed diagonally at the incision. Then he plunged it in deep at an angle. He pressed his body forward. Putting his full body weight on the weapon to push it deeper. Then he releasing the pressure a little, he got up. Pushing his hands down on the kodachi again. The blade straight on the corner started to go up as the hilt was pushed down and threw a slab of dirt into the air.

Now there was a nice hole in the ground and it will be Keido's proper target. He lifted his foot far behind him. Then he extended his leg. Pushing his body up and back, the leg followed going down and front. Keido kept his eye on the target, aiming the foot at the hole. It went in, the kick full of energy behind it. And when it came sweeping back up, out came another chunk of dirt.

It became a bigger hole. The spear would surely fit. Keido lifted the spear with both hands as far up as possible. Then he adjusted the position of his arms and body. Right until a point he thought the spearhead would go straight down into the hole. Then his arms came down, followed by the spear. His back also got bent at the same time. Adding to the strength and speed. The spear was driven straight into the hole. Keido with his hands still on it pulled and pushed on it. It moved a little, but not too much either. The spear was not going to come out anytime soon.

With the spear sticking right out of the ground, it was prepared to help Keido with the net practice. Keido lifted the net and went straight to the spear. Right until his foot touched it. Then he started walking back. He decided ten nearly ten paces should be enough. He still had the range of a real fight to think about. Once there, he stood at ready and brought his net up.

Which would he start off with first? Trying to throw or trying to disarm? Keido decided that he will start with throwing first. Mainly because he was far too tired to even think of replacing the spear if it came out of its hole.

"Ten paces" he reminded himself of the range

Keido brought his net behind him. Passing his waist, passing his legs. The starting position would be important. He did not want the net to get stuck on himself. Since this was going to be his first try, he was going to have to take things slow. Keido tried the movements once slowly. To trace where the net would be going. He brought his arms slowly in front and up. The net dragged behind slowly but what he wanted, was what he saw. It did rise up a little bit when he stopped.

Satisfied, Keido brought the net back to the same starting point. He had to be sure he was following the right path he settled for when he did this for real. This time he moved faster, quickly pushing his arms forward until it was right in front of him when he released the net. His movement was new, crude and he felt the net dragging clumsily behind him. Luckily it got past him and started flying over the spear. But in the end all the preparations cannot save him from his poor experience. He missed the spear again. This time when the new went to the side.

Keido was not satisfied by the result. Why did it have to go to the side. Quickly, he headed up to the net and when he had it in his hands, measured the ten paces he wanted. He put the net at its starting point again and stared at his target. Why did it have to go to the side? Keido thought about it a little bit more. Maybe he had to release it later than he did.

He did the movements again. This time correcting a few problems he thought he noticed. Keido lifted the net further away to his side. So there was no potential problems of being blocked with his body like he felt when the weights knocked into him earlier. He kept his arms bent throughout, so that when he released the net there will not be any unnecessary extra movements of getting into position that will waste energy and force. Keido even gave a little twist at his waist to get the net further to the side. The result? Another miss. While not what he wanted he noticed it was better. The changes had some effect.

The training continued on. Keido kept grabbing the net and bringing it back. Everytime he threw it, something changed. The position of the net may be more front than back or higher off the ground. He might straighten his arm more or keep it bent, changing it half way when it moved. Even something as slight as how far he turned his waist was considered. He kept an eye on where the nets landed too. Marking the spot with his kodachi. Finally after so many changes, Keido threw the net again. From the back straight to releasing it in front of him. He held his breath. Anticipating this final attempt when it finally landed on the spear. The weight dragging the rest of the sides down.

Now Keido can throw the net. But can he throw the net? He wanted to try grabbing the weapons from his enemies. He will try the method that the woman fighter did. He got closer to his spear. This time, Keido put the net to his side. Pulling on it so that it will go as straight as possible. Then he threw his arms forward in a circle. Moving it around so that the straightened net would fly straight at the spear. His waist twisted at the same time so that he would increase the range of the arc. He felt it when the net hit the spear and spun around. Entangling the spear.

"Was that how it worked?" he asked himself seeing it.

He tugged and pulled softly to see if the net was fastened. The weights did its work. But there was one problem. Doing this would take far to long to do in a real fight. Unless he went and tried to go faster. But he doubted he could try so soon. Nevertheless, he went to untangle the net. Preparing for another try.

Keido prepared to do his normal throw again. But he was closer to his target. Maybe five paces? He pulled back his arms and net behind the net. It was al the same as usual. Then he moved it front. Straight in front of him. But instead of releasing, he gripped on the net. The other end went forward and spread as it landed on the spear's point. Feeling it, he gave a tug. Then he gave a pull. Digging his heels on the ground and pulling his back backwards until the spear went lower, and lower. Bending.

"Now that is another way of doing it." he told himself.

He spear was embedded deep which was why it dropped. Keido did not know how effective these disarming moves would be. But even if it was not, it can still be annoying to his opponents. Which was all for the day. He was getting very tired. Keido went back to the spear and gripped it hard. Taking a deep breath he heaved and pulled upwards. Shaking the spear around to loosen it until finally it suddenly shot up. Keido who was not prepared for that toppled over on his back.

When he got back on his feet he collected his belongings. Another day fulfilled. Maybe he could put to use what he learned in the colosseum soon? A smile came on his face as he thought that and started to walk back to the inn.

Sorry this took so long to get to you. : (

Your tenses are a little weird in places. You say ‘will’ where you should say ‘would;’ if you’re questioning a passage read it aloud to yourself, and you’ll hear if the tenses are off.

Also, the spear is a two-handed weapon. It depends on having the support of both hands to keep it in place and in the control of the fighter. The only one that could possibly be used in one hand is something called a half-spear.
