Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Coren on December 16th, 2011, 1:03 am

Coren just nodded at Hadrian's comment. “Well, there more then a few people that are disciplined enough to practice magic, but I get your point. To many people see magic as a quick way to get a lot of power or just try to learn it on a whim to satisfy some passing fancy. Never even thinking about the toll that magic takes from the wizard practicing the discipline. Still I think its possible to prepare people a little bit for the strain that magic is going to place on them mentally and physically.” Coren's eyes absentmindedly drifted towards his right arm, before adding something to what he had said. “Well at least enough to make sure they don't cripple themselves before some time has passed.”

He looked back towards Hadrian just as soon as he finished his sentence. Letting out a little laugh as Hadrian made a comment about his mask. “Oh you mean this?” He pointed towards the leather mask that was covering the lower half of his face. “No reason for you to be worried about it. Just some personal reasons why I'm wearing it.” Coren said, his tone implying that this was the end of that subject.
“Anyway, you don't have to thrust me. But your letting a nice chance to learn more from somebody who knows his stuff slip through your fingers. Besides, I'm a librarian, what would I have to gain from somebody I just met here?”

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Postby Hadrian on December 16th, 2011, 8:04 am

Not really in the mood to argue the finer points of whether certain people should practice magic or not, Hadrian nodded because Coren had somewhat similar views so far as he could tell. That he would not remove his mask or speak to its necessity did not bother Hadrian. Everyone had their secrets, and he could read many of them upon their souls by touching their auras. So long as he could touch this Coren's, he would have some idea as to whether the man was trying to play him. So far it didn't seem so, and he was growing more accustomed to the patterns and fluctuations of his energies all the while he was sitting so near to him. It was not a perfect system, for he hadn't the wisdom of a god, but it was more than many had at their disposal.

"Your occupation does not make you innocent of all wiles," he noted, "but whether I trust you or not, your words have been vague enough. If you have an offer, you should make it."

Coren let out a small chuckle ass Hadrian almost demanded to stop with his vague words and make the offer. It seemed this man was at least smart enough to try and find out the terms on his side before accepting to any kind of agreement.
“Sure sure, Lets quit with the vague words and promises and get down to business then. My part of our agreement will be that I introduce you to one crafter with the skill of your choice that I know off that will be willing to teach you about his craft.” Coren smiled underneath his mask. “Of course nothing in this world is given for free so I do expect something valuable on your part in return for the service I am doing you. Luckily for you you are already in possession of something very valuable in my eyes... Knowledge.” Coren looked straight at the man as he said the last word.
“So hadrian, is that offer clear enough and acceptable for you. Coren asked, a small hint of steel hidden in his voice and the ever shifting colors of his eyes solidified on a neutral greenish color. He was willing to barter a bit about what kind of knowledge he was going to accept, but he was not going to give anything up without getting something in return.

Hadrian considered the masked man with his purposefully vague attempt at straight talking. He got the sense that he could trust that whatever agreement they might make would be honored, but he was already teaching Kendall and Ethan, and had to keep time for his own pursuits. There was an open-ended time commitment implied by Coren's offer.

"You introduce me to someone who can teach me in exchange for me teaching you?" he asked slowly, but not because his thoughts were slow. His lips went a bit tighter; all these years of study in an attempt to distance himself from the negotiations of business and here was a man trying to bargain for his hard-won lore.

"I wish to learn to carve jewels. What is it you wish of me in exchange?"

Coren nodded as hadrian repeated his offer. “Yes, that is my part of the offer” he said in a calm and friendly voice. As hadrian asked what he would want in return for introducing somebody who could teach him coren's eye's slowly darkened from their neutral greenish color. It seemed hadrian was at least a bit interested in his offer.

“Well, what I want to learn from you in exchange? Well that mostly depends on what your actually able and willing to teach me. So why don't you tell me what kind of knowledge have and are willing to teach me so that I can actually make an informed choice?” Coren asked. Thrusting hadrian enough to not lie about what he knew and just teach him something that was completely wrong just to screw him over. The guy looked thrustfull enough for that at least.

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

"I'm not in the habit of detailing my abilities to a perfect stranger," he said reasonably, or so he thought it. After his lessons at intelligencing with MaeClair and his mandate from Loren Dyres, he had been thrust even further beneath the surface of things, at least in the realm of politics, a realm he had little wish to understand except to survive it. "But," he continued, knowing that someone would have to give somewhat or they would remain at an impasse, or someone would become an enemy of the other, "I am classically trained. I can teach glyphing and auristics."

Magecrafting and the other world magics were disciplines that really required a mentor rather than just someone for an initiation, and Hadrian didn't really want any competition where magecrafting was concerned. And really, who wanted to trust a masked stranger with powers beyond the normal man's ken?

Coren just nodded as hadrian said he wasn't going to detail his abilities to a stranger. He was doing exactly the same thing right now so he couldn't blame him for being a bit secretive. As hadrian offered two magical disciplines he could teach him coren leaned back in his chair mulling over the choice for a while. He did need a lot more instruction in glyphing since his skill in it could barely be called basic at the best of times, but the idea of polishing up his knowledge on auristic's didn't sound that bad either.

“Well, can you tell me a bit more about both those disciplines hadrian? I know that auristics is used to read aura's somehow but I never heard or read about what glyphing does, there aren't that many books on magic in this library and most of the books we have are on the more..Flashy disciplines” Coren said the last part of his sentence with a slight undertone of contempt.
“And while there are a lot of vantha stories with magic in them I don't really dare to take anything in those for truth, you know how vantha are, they exaggerate everything and suddenly the one guy that the hero won against was an entire group of bandits with dire wolf pets.” Coren said in a joking tone.

Glyph's and paper... lots of it (hadrian)

Hadrian considered for a moment.

"Most magi develop a sense for the djed the more they work with it, opening up latent senses to support their work. But Auristics is a much more powerful version of this, a discipline rather than a vague sense. It is still largely passive, but more definite, more detailed. Being that sight is the sense most people rely upon, most aurists and certainly most beginning aurists learn to see auras, but the musically gifted might hear certain tones to associate with certain people, or one might just sense the auras like a sort of heat through the palms.

"Glyphing is the use of glyphs, runes, and sigils to enhance, augment, store, change, or, in some cases, block and banish magic. An advanced example would be the Grand Oath, which binds the signing party via the Ukalas, an unbreakable oath." He himself could not yet write out a Grand Oath, but he had seen it done in a dream within a dream, and was confident that one day he would be able to do so.

Coren listened too hadrian as he began to give him an overview of what both of the offered disciplines did, coren carefully compared what hadrian was saying right now to his basic knoweldge of both of the disciplines, while he didn't think hadrian would be the type to misinform somebody about a magic discipline and how it would work, especially since that would most likely be the cause of a quick death. Magic wasn't something you would want people ignorant of how it worked mess around with.

“Well, auristic's sounds interesting, especially since it would allow for a more in dept analysis of other magical phenomenon's I might encounter later. Not to mention that if I learn glyphing from you I won't be able to use it because I don't have any magic that I am able to enhance or store with it, which would make me learning it fairly useless won't it.” Coren decided to continue to act as if he knew absolutely nothing of magic. But filed away that little tidbit on the great oath for later study. Being able to file up an unbreakable oath might just come in handy in his job.
“But before I make my decision, what are the main dangers of those disciplines and how does the initiation or them go? I want to know what I'm in for before I take that step.”

He paused for a moment, thinking that Coren wasn't offering much in exchange for this preliminary lesson, but it took no effort, really, just time that he had meant to spend studying. After explaining the most common side-effects of the overuse of Auristics, he moved to Glyphing.

"The only negative side effects of Glyphing involve mistakes when altering other magics. So if you were a pyromancer... well, you could get burned. But world magic doesn't really use much of your djed, so there is less risk of injury."
