PHYSICAL

Lyner like many young men engaged in an active lifestyles has the healthy, vibrant flush of vigour in his complexion. Likewise his brown eyes are always in animation, rarely without a glimmer of lively curiosity – or lust. He wears his black hair loose and cut short on the advice of older pit fighters in Sunberth.

Despite being hardened by years of pit fighting Lyner doesn’t have the looks one would expect from a man imprisoned. His face is almost disarmingly boyish and devoid of scars or deformity. His jaws are are sharp & angular. He endeavors to keep his chin clean and stubble free. In surprising contrast to his face his body is littered with constant reminders of his confinement and the battles he's survived. Scars both long and small litter his skin, not too many that he would look frightening but enough for anyone to realize that he has a violent past. Most notable of his scars are the three horizontal callouses on his back from his first & only lashing.

The scars do not serve as the lone evidence of his misspent youth however. His physique was also something forged in those dark pits. His frame is Isurian in perfection, his eight pac abs rock hard, his arms like sculpted granite and his shoulders firm and solid. He actively maintains his figure, not simply because of vanity but because his fitness had saved his life on more than one occasion in the past.

TRAITS

Lyner is generally a good natured guy. He is slow to anger, enjoys friendly banter and always finds a silver lining to any grim situation. As a personification of indomitable cheer it can be difficult to read Lyner's likes and dislikes though he often supplies his information, thoughts and feelings voluntarily if he notices that his companions fail to understand him.

Strangely enough, this warm personality is the very same he wears in combat. Used to being inches from death, he has learned to live accepting the idea that everyone has to die and that if he cannot escape demise he would at least die with a smile on his face.

Unknown to anyone but his family, Lyner is actually one of two twins. His younger brother Ryner, was the friendly and bright boy and Lyner the cold anti-social kid who kept to himself. In an event that would forever shape Lyner, Ryner would push his brother out of the way of a rampaging stallion and end up mortally injured in his brother's place. Ryner's dying wish was for Lyner to quit brooding and embrace life so he could enjoy it in his stead.

He has honored that wish since the day of Ryner's funeral.

BELIEFS

Despite the multitude of gods gracing the land of Mizhar Lyner believes in none of them. Years as a pit fighter in Sunberth has burned out any faith in the gods he might have nurtured. Nights of prayers left unanswered has forced him to accept that if something should happen in his favour it will only come to pass if it is by his own hands. The only thing he believes in now is his own strength.

Lyner follows no code of honor, Sunbert’s lawlessness and the merciless pit fights he participated in has taught him that anything is acceptable so long as you can survive the repercussions. He doesn’t believe in law, only in what he feels. Despite being a level-headed fellow, Lyner occasionally makes irrational decisions based on his feelings and will stubbornly stick by them.

BACKGROUND HISTORY:

When people were captured and thrown into slavery as prize-fighters in Sunberth, they cease to be people, their deaths almost guaranteed at the hands of another inmate, their caretaker, hunger or illness. The life of a prize fighter is not an easy life, even the celebration of the crowd at the end of a duel was a pale and shallow reward to a man who had nothing to look forward to but his next warm meal and maybe the touch of a whore if he should find his benefactor generous. It didn’t help that there were no such things as kind patrons in this dark corner of the world.

Enter Lyner, an ordinary human boy who was captured on a merchant caravan on route from Syliras to Zeltiva. Like many young boys on the verge of manhood without talent for craft, rhetoric or arithmetic he had the lofty goal of becoming a port labourer. There were few places in the world that had a port still active with the amount of traffic Zeltiva enjoyed, that meant there were many vacancies for able bodied young men who were willing to sweat and toil for a few coins and Lyner was one such person.

Fortunately in Sunberth, being young and able bodied was just as much a blessing as it was when he would have been spending his time lifting sacks or crates. He was inexperienced in combat and was a good natured fellow who avoided the hassle of fighting when he could. Unfortunately fighting was as natural as breathing in Sunberth’s combat pits and it was here that his physique served him well, his stamina and light feet allowed him to survive a dangerous fight with an old veteran who was suffering from disease. The next few days after his miraculous win he hastily acquainted himself with the art of fighting through buying lessons by splitting what little rations he had.

Months of this hard lifestyle rid the youth of hesitation and mercy. Fear of battle was only a potent drug the first few times one tasted it and Lyner found it hard to feel merciful against someone who wanted to put a spear head between his ribs. In abandoning his innocence he became a man, a seasoned fighter who’d learned to use any scheme and tactic to come out on top.

But the trials of a warrior were far more difficult than that of a rotting corpse. When one was no longer preoccupied with immediate survival, when he had time to look at the bigger picture, that was when he realized that the life of an indentured prize fighter may be a fate worse than death. The sky was small when one gazed upon it from the pit and the unchanging and endless string of matches was all the awaited even seasoned veterans. It was this maddening hopelessness, this bleak stressful existence that broke many strong willed men. Life as a prize fighter was not life, it was simply survival. Only the legendary few who became peerless with their skill in the blade or their fist escaped Sunberth alive and whole.

But Lyner was a young man and like any other young man Lyner was entitled to dream and hope against all the darkness of the world.

Hope it turns out, was a rare commodity in Sunberth and Lyner, well... he was someone who possessed and endless supply of it. Where most people lost hope, he didn’t. While people stopped trying to escape after a few failures and lashings he didn’t. When people talked about their family and how they would never get to see them, he was the one who still meant to see his family next spring.

The fool, they called him.

And he remained a fool, a jolly fool. Three years of seeing nothing but Sunberth’s walls did nothing to diminish his persistence. He was as bright and cheery as ever and people grew to like him for that. He was something like a mascot to his fellow prisoners, a reminder to the weary worn souls of what men were before the shackles of misfortune starved their spirits into quiet submission.

The arrival of a curious cloaked slave trader would change his fortune for good or ill though. The slaver had no name, no face to show, but he had money and a lot of it. He paid for the boy with little negotiation and he was out of Sunberth as quickly as he was thrown into it.

Now this strange slaver did not sleep, eat or even seem to breathe at times. His manner of speech too was subject to Lyner’s curiosity as much as his foul stench. The man kept to himself on the road and actually actively avoided interacting with people. Lyner would never find out his intentions however as the slaver never had the opportunity to show the boy what he meant to do. In only two days a group of bandits from the city of Sunberth picked up the trail of this rich slaver’s whereabouts and had pursued him on horseback. The bandits easily caught up with the slaver's sluggish cart-drawn wagon, and though the slaver did put up some resistance burning those he could with strange magic he was summarily decapitated leaving only three of the several bandits alive.

Lyner, in the confusion of the battle between the slaver and the bandits picked up one of the swords from a charred corpse that had rolled near his cage. With blade in hand he fanatically hacked away at the cage's lock, breaking it and ruining the perfectly good sword in the process. He was ignored by the three remaining bandits who seemed to only have eyes on the chest of coins they'd discovered the cart and each other. Meanwhile Lyner took with him only what was in arm's reach, a small leather sling bag containing a hefty sum of mizas, embalming fluid and a map of the region before he disappeared into the woods.

Lyner was overjoyed at his luck, it seemed that some god had answered all those prayers that he'd thought to have fallen on deaf ears. He was free, had in his possession more money than he had ever had and he could finally see his family again. His joy however was short lived. He arrived in Syliras weeks later only to discover that his once single mother had married a rich merchant shortly after his disappearance and her new husband was not pleased with the idea of adopting another child besides his younger sister.

Not wanting to risk ending his mother and sister's new life of luxury Lyner has taken it upon himself to start a new life elsewhere. After bidding them farewell he has tagged along with the first merchant barge out of Syliras to find himself a new home.
