Season of Winter, 1st day, 505AV, the first hour of the morning...

The Rearing Stallion

The celebrations were like nothing Seamus had ever seen before. The Stallion was packed to well over capacity, to the point where there were as many people inside the Tavern as there were spilling out onto the avenue. Ale was flowing like a fountain, and bottles of wine were being consumed by the hundreds. Aargon had stored up dozens upon dozens of ale casks for this night, preparing for the celebrations that would inevitably unfold, for it was the first day of the New Year, 505AV.

And a fine year it was turning out to be so far.

Seamus had never seen such extravagance in his life. His brothers had promised him a night he would never forget, and so far they had pulled through. He was overwhelmed by the celebrations, feeling as if he had stepped into a foreign world where everyone was constantly intoxicated and rowdy song was the common tongue.

All his senses were saturated with information, hundreds of new things being thrown at him at once. To start, the sound was earsplitting and never ceasing; Men and women were laughing, yelling and stomping feet. Flagons of ale were being knocked together in cheers for the new year. Music was being played by a group of drunken travelling bards, on the small stage against the wall. And above it all, the singing! There must have been twenty songs being sung all at once within the tavern, all over top of each other, vying to be the loudest and most heartfully sung.

The smells were layered and wonderful: roasting meat, sweet wine, and woodsmoke from the plentiful bonfires across the city.

And, oh, the things to see. All the colors of the world, worn on dresses and doublets and hats, and flown on banners and flags. Fireworks like explosive rainbows shot above the city from the domed castle. Sylirian Knights paraded through the streets, contrasting the spectrum of color in their crisp white uniforms and shining steel armor. There were dancing bears in the squares, and jesters doing cartwheels down the avenues. There were fire-breathers and sword-swallowers, and even, Seamus had seen, a Myrian ambassador riding an unimaginably huge and remarkably fine looking tiger.

This was Seamus' first New Year celebration at which his brothers had allowed him to join them at the Stallion. They considered him old enough now, and he was proud and excited to join them on one of their famed nights of mischief and mayhem.

Seamus had three brothers, all older. The eldest, Patrick, was named after their father. He stood six feet tall, and was an impressive, quiet man of twenty-five years. The youngest of the three was Arthur, fairer than the others, and handsome at the age of twenty. In between the two was the somewhat portly and always cheery Jack, or "Jax" as he was known amongst family and friends. They all shared the same dark eyes, and the fair skin inherited from their late Mother. And they all, all four, wore around their neck the silver crosses given to them by their father on his deathbed.

The crosses were roughly hewn from pure silver, and the marks from the smith's hammer could be seen upon the metal. The bars of the crosses were of equal length, and were just less than a centimeter wide each. They all hung from leather thongs tied around each brother's neck.

Brotherhood was the most important aspect of Seamus' life. He looked up to his three brothers almost as gods. They were men who knew the world, and all it's secrets, and joining their ranks as an equal was the highest honor Seamus could ever achieve.

Today was the happiest day of his life.

The four young men made their way through the throngs of locals gathered outside the Stallion, and entered the tavern, laughing and telling stories. They walked in pairs, handsome Arthur and fat Jax first, joking and horsing about, while Seamus walked with his eldest brother, Patrick. Patrick had an arm around Seamus' shoulders and his other hand in a pocket, and they walked in admirable silence through the crowded tavern.

They made their way to the bar, and Patrick ordered four mugs of ale from the pretty girl behind the counter, paying for them all. The girl smiled at the brothers, and gave Seamus a wink and blew him a kiss.

A kiss! Seamus felt the blood rise to his cheeks and knew for a fact that he was bright red with embarrassment.

Jax laughed and gave Seamus a punch to the shoulder.

"Dont you take it to heart, lad! Carmen's a saucy girl, you're not the first man she's made turn into a tomato!" The brothers shared a laugh, and then grabbed their flagons from the counter where Carmen had put them up. The girl had moved on to another patron, but Seamus could not keep his eyes off of her. She had blown him a kiss...

"Oy, Seamus!" Arthur called to him, smacking him upside the head and snapping Seamus out of his reverie. "This is a night for brothers, not for some wench. So, I say we drink to the men who share our blood and who we'd gladly take a knife for any day of the week. We're the only family we've got, after all! To brothers, lads, and may nothing tear us apart!"

"Aye!" They all joined their mugs with a clink and a cheer, and then took mighty draughts of their rich ales. Seamus closed his eyes, and drank as much (if not more) as his brothers. He savored every drop of the cool liquid gracing his tastebuds and pouring down his throat like liquid heaven. When he had drank his fill, Patrick clasped him on the shoulder and looked him straight in the eyes.

"Seamus. Brother. You are a man now." Seamus averted his eyes, embarrassed for the tears that were welling up. "Look at me Seamus, and hear me well." Seamus locked eyes with his eldest brother, fighting back tears. "Do not cry, for there is nothing sad here. You must remember that your brothers are always there for you, no matter what. You must remember that you are a man now, and that everything you do has consequences. You must remember that your life is precious, and so is the life of your fellow man. And above all Seamus, remember your father, for he would be proud of you today." Patrick gave Seamus' shoulder an extra squeeze.

"Aye, Seamus," Jax said in uncharacteristically serious tones, "He would be proud were he here today, as we are.

"Let us drink, to our father. May he rest in peace."

They raised their glasses, but this time there was no cheer. Each brother looked into his fellow man's eyes, and then, as one, they drank long and they drank deep.

"Well, I'm sure father would have wanted us to get sloshed," Seamus said, and Jax laughed so hard that ale came flying out of his nose. Arthur punched him, Jax punched back, and then they both came flying at Seamus, jovially evil grins stretched across their faces. The tension was broken, and as the three of them wrestled and ale flew everywhere from their flagons, Patrick ordered another round from the bar.

For it was New Years, and they were all men. And what do men do?

Drink!
