The massive stretch of desert that overwhelms Eyktol. Here, a man's water is worth more than his life, and the burying sands are the unfortunate's mute undertaker.

Sadisfarh

Half buried in the dunes, a gorge of warped red stones weaves through the desolate, rocky wastes, defying the penetrating eyes of even the deftest trackers. Highly elusive, it only appears to the unwary. There are huge blocks of stone, shaped and scoured by the dust of dreams. The jut of menhirs, plunging up like spears from the ruddy sands and crested by the ragged nests of vultures. Sadisfarh sprawls out in a crinkling web of canyons and ravines, like a cage of ribs, that boil and simmer with pockets of wild djed. The few scrubs are spiny, twisted things. Their roots lace thickly, breaking through rock.

Sadisfarh may be there with the fall of dusk, yet covered by the shifting sands before the damn. There’s no way of knowing where it leads, for it seems to slither like a vast serpent. There are chasms that lead below the ground, concealed within the chaotic whorls. The tantalizing murmur of rushing water is a lonely refrain, broken only the grating of gritty gusts against tortured ears. The gorge is overwhelmingly empty. Few wanderers dare venture through its depths, and the irregular herds of goats tend to shy away or stampede if caught by the immensity of unyielding rock.

The baked ground is strewn with desultory heaps of sand, hiding fragments of rusty, pitted iron, shards of pottery, bleached scraps of fabric and yellowed bones. The keenly sighted sometimes discern the vague contours of beams and roofs, leading to conjecture that the petrified rocks conceal the buried remnants of ruins. That may be so, for many objects plucked from the shifting sands are perfectly preserved, through most are in various stages of decay. Tsanas are known to inhabit the gorge, along with large, spindly carnivorous spiders larger than a man’s head. They feast on a scurrying sprawl of horned beetles, clad by shiny jet carapaces.
