Fantasy fans - have you read The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson? If not, do it, and do it now! You may know of Brandon because he's the author finishing up the late RJ's Wheel of Time series, but he's also written the Mistborn Trilogy most notably.

This book is the start of his magnus opus, or so he says, but it's fantastic. It's a little bit of a slow burner at first, but the world he crafts holds so much detail it's unreal, and the book itself is beautiful, adorned with internal artwork throughout. This is one of the first fantasy books I've read with a truly unique attempt at worldbuilding, instead of pulling from tolkien or the many authors that have come after. The book is set on the world of Roshar, a plane ravaged by "highstorms", where the plants have adapted to retreat into hard buds and rock, and the fauna mainly consists of crustaceans. Cities are built within natural formation defences to protect against the storms. He follows 3 characters through the book, and I found myself connecting to all of them.

Must read, I suggest! It will tide me over until A Memory of Light is finally released at any rate!

I'm a huge fan of Brandon Sanderson! Think I've read all of his books apart from Warbringer.
I just love the way he writes. Totally agree with your reccomendation (:

Warbreaker is fun too! :) I'm glad he was picked to finish the Wheel of Time.

:D I own Warbreaker, I just haven't read it yet haaha!
My favourites are still the Mistborn trilogy, though I am excited for the rest of the Way of Kings. And his part of Wheel of Time, of course (:

Love Brandon sanderson almost as much as Brent Weeks! The Mistborn Trilogy was my favorite series from him. He is so creative it still confounds me. I mean really, who thinks of eating metal to gain superpowers :P

Olympics Opening Ceremony

I'm slightly sad I haven't seen anything on here regarding this. The Opening Ceremony has come and gone, and my fears were washed away. I truly thought it would be an embarassment for my country, but it was awesome. It was tacky, true, but so hilariously tacky in such a British way. As well as the humour, there were some epic moments, and I felt a twinkle of patriotism at certain points. I loved the opening as green pastures made way for the Industrial Revolution.

If you haven't seen it, I urge you to go watch it, or at least the highlights. Whether you care about the Olympics, sports in general, or Britain, or not, it's worth a watch. China spent billions, used enforced labour, and yet our Ceremony seemed to have SO much more life, spirit, and passion to it.

My favourite highlights include the Queen and James Bond parachuting into the stadium, and Voldemort vs Mary Poppins!

Proud to be British for a while at least. And seriously, piss off if you're going to respond to this with a downer. ;)

...is that American billions or British billions? Cause I think there's two definitions for that word, and I certainly HOPE they didn't spent over 1,000,000,000 on it... what with all the proverbial starving children in China...
