Ustengrav started with his story, it was about when he was occupying a caravan that had been making its way from Riverfall to Syliras. Taking a deep breath he began. "The caravan had been making its way from Riverfall to Syliras, it was a gorgeous day.. the birds were chirping in the trees, the calm breeze cooled the skin and the flowers blossomed with beauty." he gave a slight smile at Brynja and took a small sip of wine, his teeth glinted against the candle light that was nestled in the middle of the table.
"It was such a fine day so I decided to have nap on one of the wagons that continued down the quiet road, getting another guard to cover for me." he continued on, his voice peaceful and unruffled. He had surprised himself with his tone of voice, it had always be deep and distinct but now it was different albeit it still had hints of his carefree attitude.
"When I eventually had fallen asleep, I dreamed that I was walking through a serene and calm glade, with nothing on my skin but nature itself. The leaves of the trees and the grass were a healthy bright green and the little dirt path intertwined through the great trunks. The glade was filled with magnificent birds and animals of every size and shape whose sounds and calls had put the worlds best musicians to shame. Then finally I came upon a sight that I would never forget, A shallow stream that stopped into a beautiful pool, the water was as clear as glass and had tasted like the finest wine. But at the end of the pool, I noticed a woman.." Ustengrav looked into Brynja's eyes, they sparkled beyond any riches he had set eyes upon.
"This woman had beauty that made the gods envious, she had long, black braided hair. Her eyes shone brighter and more gorgeous than the sun and her smile was whiter than the whitest snow. I had thought I met the goddess of beauty." Ustengrav again smiled, he had been describing Brynja, he had hoped that his little tale had brought her around into at least giving him a chance. Brynja smiled.
After listening to his tale of beauty, the two girls got up and departed saying that they were going to freshen up. This gave Ustengrav time to confer with his young friend. He listened to his young friends observations about him drooling over his fair maiden.
"Well can you blame me, she is gorgeous!" he said with his usual laugh, now completely reverted back to his carefree ways now that the girls had gotten out of earshot.
Ustengrav nodded at the suggestion of more drink, he took a serious liking to the wine, it tasted of ripe berries and smelt like the wild fruits of the forest, it even left a mild tingle in his mouth as he swallowed the drink. All he drunk before was ale, mead and occasionally some spirits if the mood took him, so it was pleasantly unfamiliar as it washed down his throat.
Reaching for the drink that Haesmar had got him, he nodded in appreciation. "Oh shes a beauty my friend!" the grizzled warrior said while taking another gulp from the glass. He did feel different around Brynja, although he didn't know what it was, perhaps his young friend was right, maybe it was love, only time could tell.
"Since the women are away, do you fancy a test of strength?" Ustengrav smirked while putting his arm up and resting it on the grubby table.
"Come and test your mettle against me boy! Unless a strong, prime youngling like yourself cant beat a weak, old fart like me in a arm wrestle!" Ustengrav laughed and winked at his young friend, while stretching his arm for the upcoming bout. |
