It wasn’t until Addy missed a night or two of taking Ash out to fly that she began to realize what an escape the hours she spent with the Owl outside the city walls had become. She had gone to bed both times with a scowl on her face, a crimp in her neck and a weight on her shoulder. Though she whined about it constantly, it didn’t make that fact that her duty as an Endal and a healer was almost more than the little woman could bear any less true. In fact, it had only gotten worse.
Her trip to the Dreaming Lady only a few nights ago had helped immensely and Addy found herself lying in bed next to her slumbering bondmate thinking of Chemar. Though Addy would roll in the fur with just about anything attractive and alive, the mysterious young woman hadn’t seemed interested in her in that way. Instead, Addy felt phantom fingers massaging the knot from her shoulders, bathing her in such relaxation that she had just drifted off into sleep without a breath of the usual resistance. Sure, she could have easily asked Sira for a massage, glad for the easy excuse to touch each other though they hardly needed one, it just wasn’t the same.
The day had been a long one and Addy had hardly a moment to herself as she ran this way and that, kissing boo boo’s and splinting broken arms, breaking up fights and settling arguments; she couldn’t even remember what she had gotten for lunch, or if she had even ever managed to stop and eat it at all. And after all that, as taxing as the day was, Addy still lay in bed for goddess knows how many bells simply trying to sleep. But it never came.
Fighting to keep herself from flinging the furs from the bed as she stood, Addy tip-toed from the room, leaving Sira asleep behind her as she made her way in the aerie that held both Sira’s nest and Ash’s perch. The little owl was there, still as stone and practically invisible against the night sky, his large amber eyes wide as he stared out into the darkness. He hooted as Addy approached, shifting on his perch, talons clicking against the wood as he turned towards his master. Addy slipped her arm into the thick leather glove that she always kept nearby, holding out her arm so that her owl could easily scoot from his branch to her arm.
“Do you want to go out tonight, little one?” Gentle fingers of her ungloved hand stroked softly over the sleek black feathers that covered his head, smiling as the owl rotated his head towards her and hooted softly in response, fluffing out his wings and shifting from foot to foot in what appeared to be excitement. Ash wasn’t like normal birds; Addy had found out early on that she needn’t contain him, for the little guy never flew off without her. He also seemed extremely attached to the little woman, more so than any other raptor she’d ever handled. True, she had saved his wing and raised him from a chick but that still didn’t explain the attachment. Writing it off simply as another oddity acquired thanks to the proximity of the Wind Eagles, Addy simply enjoyed her companion as he was.
It took only a moment or two for her to get dressed and grab the satchel that she kept her falconry gear in, slinging it over her back as she retrieved the glove and Ash, carrying him over to where the aerie opened to the sky. “I’ll meet you by the road.” Hooting his acquiescence, the owl took off into the night sky with hardly a sound, losing sight of him after only a few dozen feet. It took the little healer nearly a bell to cross the city and exit through the gate, seeing not a single soul, not even Val, the ever-vigilant gatekeeper. As much as an escape as her night falconry might be, Addy had to admit that it was somewhat lonely.
The wind whipped briskly over the open road, cutting through all of the healers layers as she stepped out from the shelter of the gate, shivering and immediately shrugging into the heavy cloak she brought with her just in case. Tugging the fabric tight around her shoulders and crossing her arms over her chest, Addy nuzzled her face down into the collar of the cloak and set off at a brisk pace down the mountain, keeping her senses alert for any sign of her little owl, angling her path towards the foreboding tree line of The Unforgiving.
