Having had time to absorb some of the material he had read during his time in the library, Elem believed that one of those disciplines would be intuitive enough to practice on his own: Auristics. Sitting at his desk with several candles lit, he decided to begin with something simple, taking his Antiquities Society medallion from around his neck. It was something he always wore and being an inanimate, physical object, he suspected it would be the easiest thing to start with. Placing the small circlet of gold, emblazoned with the compass rose of the Society, on the desk before him, Elem touched it with his fingers as if it might do something.
It was a simple thing to do, as more and more examples of Djed had been presented to the Zeltivan over time. However, in this case, he knew that Auristics was a passive discipline and he would not be manipulating the Djed of this object, rather sensing and analyzing it. His eyes traveled over it, moving over its shape and breadth, until he began to notice something akin to a shadow around it. A second circle, slightly larger, encompassed the compass. At first, he found that it was better to look at it indirectly, using his peripheral vision. This made what could only be the aura more prominent. He had to focus, however, devoting his full concentration to the task at hand.
Squinting in the candlelight, he kept moving his eyes around the circular field, expecting to see some sort of color or visual representation, though he also did not expect that at all. What was beginning to occur was entirely different. It was the tactile sensation of cool metal that Elem noticed first, though he wasn't entirely sure where he was sensing it. His fingertips had no change in their feeling, but he could somehow just tell that it was metal. He also felt that if he had a way to guess at weight, he would be able to know the medallion's. Another important finding was a strange frequency, though again Elem could not place where he was sensing it. It just was. It wasn't a sound per se, just a strange particular wavelength that came from the item.
