[Lapis Park] Tia'aria meets a Kelvic woman named Dust in one of the most beautiful, wild places Riverfall offers.

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

30th of Winter, 512 AV

Lapis Park was always a stunning place for Aria to go. She had been only rarely throughout her life but every occasion she was present, she remembered the scenery acutely. Even in Winter it was gorgeous. The large gem landmarks stood out starkly against the white landscape, highlighting the snow they sat by and reflecting off the ice around them to leave shimmering designs on nearby surfaces.

The Konti girl had been seated at the same bench for the past bell, mystified deeply by the stones before her. The designs kept her attention upon the ice, leaving her awed by this small instance of incredible beauty in the one untamed park Riverfall had.

It was a cold, clear day for sitting in the park. The cloudless skies had good promises for the rest of the season to come. Winter was one of the more lovely times of the year when the landscape was frozen white and when wind brushed across the tall grass covered in snow, it revealed the yellow of dead stalks and brown cattails still frozen as well as carefully tended poison ivy kept in controlled groupings further from the benches. What Aria knew of poison ivy, she suspected the gardeners to have kept it because of the colours it changed to in the Fall. It usually changed colours first and the few leaves that remained on it were a dull red against the revealing snow.

She was alone on the bench that day. People who walked by, also idling their time, let her have her peace. She was grateful for that, although she could admit that the blank face of snow did allow her to feel a mite lonely. Not that she would complain. There were a few birds and rustling rodents deep in the grasses to keep her company.

It wasn't quite like the forest, or any true wilderness, but Dust found Lapis Park intriguing in its own right. It wasn't quite like any of the other open spaces she'd seen in Riverfall, either. For one thing, there were the rocks. Large, gleaming with all different kinds of colors, they seemed to have just been dug out of the earth and dropped into the park -- not carved, not sculpted, and not assembled into the structures so common around the city. It was different!

The path had been cleared of snow, in that meticulous way Dust was beginning to associate with Riverfall -- completely clear where people would walk, but not disturbed in the slightest outside that space. The divide between was sharp and precise, so that she had briefly wondered if the snow had been cut with a knife. It seemed like an Akalak thing to do. But that topic didn't hold the raven Kelvic's attention for long.

No, as she meandered her way through the park, her attention flitted between the landscape around her and the other people who braved the cool weather. Those who walked past her returned Dust's cheerful smile of greeting; but as her gaze continued to wander, she saw one who sat alone on a bench, unacknowledged by the passers-by. Dust paused to study her back for a moment -- which amounted to a view of blonde hair and winter clothing. Then she padded over to stand behind the bench, leaning her forearms companionably on its back.

"Hello! Are you waiting for someone?"

Tia started when a woman spoke out, breaking her reverie and startling a gasp past her coral lips. She turned her head this way and that before she found the person that had spoken, a blond girl that could have been Konti if not for the lack of most other Konti features. Still, Tia smiled with greeting. It wasn't immediately apparent, but she hadn't understood anything of importance the question asked of her.

"Hello!" She exclaimed. The woman was leaning on the back of the bench, so Tia turned around in her seat to better be able to see her and smiled pleasantly again. She spoke Common, as she usually did when conversing with apparent Humans. Most didn't speak Kontinese, and a startling amount also didn't readily speak Tukant. So, she was always sure to inquire about it, just in case she had found a rare Human that could speak one or the other. "Speak Konti or Akalak?" She inquired politely, folding her hands upon her lap. "Not... not... not know what said you." She didn't know the word 'understand' in Common, and had to make do with asking it a different way. She hoped the woman would understand so she could actually know what had been asked of her.

"Oh!" Dust exclaimed as the woman turned around to face her. "You're Konti!" Then she fell quiet, pressing her lips together over her eagerness to talk with this new person; she clearly had words beyond the initial greeting to also say, so Dust gave her the conversational room for it.

She was surprised to learn the woman -- Girl? She looked even younger than Dust did, really. -- didn't know Common at all well, and the Kelvic mused over that for a moment rather than immediately replying. How did you talk to someone who didn't share more than the littlest bit of language with you? "No," she finally answered, shaking her head. But still smiling back at the woman. "Hmm..."

Dust held up her hand against her chest, thumb and finger at her collarbones. "Dust," she offered by way of introduction, making a conscious effort to keep the words simple and few. How long that would last... Lowering her hand, she gestured at the seat beside the Konti. "May I?"

The Konti smiled and nodded in agreement with the woman's realisation, glad the woman knew of Konti. She could see that the woman didn't know the languages Tia was conversational in and frowned in understanding. It was hard, sometimes, to converse with people that didn't understand you but at least the woman was still polite and eager to give them a chance.

"I am Tia'aria," Tia said, placing her own hand on her chest. She knew the name the woman, Dust, had given her was more apt to describe the little floating bits in the air and settled on things that weren't bothered in a while and marked it as an unusual aspect of the woman. It was charming. Tia'aria also had a meaning in Kontinese, something along the lines of "she sees clearly in rain" in typical Konti fashion.

She nodded when the woman asked to sit, pleased Dust was speaking simply enough for her ease of understanding. She didn't have to think as hard to understand the simple words and was not insulted by the use of them.

Once Dust had taken her seat, Tia'aria turned to face her. They might have looked like they were friends meeting again in the park to an outsider but to the Konti she saw this as a meeting between strangers that she found already, even in this beginning stage, to be quite well received.

"Come here to look at pretty things?" Tia decided she would try and get this conversation started with a polite question. She hoped she was making sense.

"Tia'aria," Dust echoed, considering the sound of those syllables, the way they flowed. "That's a very pretty name!" she declared, smiling at the Konti. Then paused, reminding herself she needed to be careful with her words. Mostly just slow, Dust thought, so the Konti could catch each one -- she could remember how hard it was to pick out words in Pavi, or in Tukant for that matter, when she was listening to native speakers. "It's nice to meet you," she finished, looking at her companion to see if she understood.

"Pretty things," Dust echoed by way of confirmation, bobbing her head. "The rocks are very pretty." She glanced over towards the rocks in front of their particular bench, gleaming with vivid color in the wintry sunlight. After a moment, her gaze turned back to the Konti, and the flow of words started again. "I was thinking, this park, it's kinda not like the rest of the city. You know, all neat and tidy and pretty." A pause. "Well, it is pretty. You know what I mean..." Or maybe the Konti didn't, as Dust realized she'd been talking too fast -- and maybe too much -- getting caught up in her own energy. Speaking slow and simple was surprisingly hard!

The Kelvic grimaced sheepishly, then raised her hands before herself, palms outwards. "Sorry! Never mind. Umm..." She cast about for something simpler to ask of her companion, rather than expound on at length. "Do you know... where they come from?" she asked, then gestured towards the boulders nearby. "The pretty rocks?"
