Shaking her head in confusion Miria slumped over in her bed. She was not okay. Whittling wood was not having the same effects as it did a few weeks ago. Losing a friend always made Miria depressed. Each time something like this would happen Miria felt like the pain from the separation threatened to split her into so many pieces! Miria cared too much and loved too fast. Then that emotion too would in the end hurt her. Leaving, letting her lying on the ground broken.
All her life seemed like a useless act.
Miria had a chance for happiness and she foolishly ran away from it all. Her marriage. Oh her marriage was a complete disaster. True that the pair of them left each other with no hard feelings but where did that leave Miria? Everyone the Whitevine has known was taken away from her both figuratively and literally. What was left for the Coolwater? Even her name was taken from her. “Miria Skyglow. That's my name.”
Times like these. That dark place the Vantha was not used to. It threatened to grab at her dragging her in until using her until there was nothing left. That petching Ronan! How dare he play with my emotions like that? Once again Miria eyes fluttered around trying to find solace in whatever she can. A part of her tugged at her threatening to separate Miria. A pain?
In someways it was but not in this moment. Right now it was promising her an escape. How grand would it be not to have anyone do anything to hurt you anymore? They did what you wanted and made you happy? Finding herself smiling Miria's eyes grew to a disgusted brown feeling that ugly emotion get the better of her. What was it called? If emotions had a life of their own the vantha knew that they would be stronger then anyone else. Perhaps even control and dominate others. Hah only a pipe dream. Something like that sounded like magic.
Spring 30, Year 513 AV
Dressing warmly Miria trudged along receiving her first lessons on magic instruction. After being lead around by an Icewatch pair the group was stalled as they sat outside in the snow, the expanses of nature helping them feel their own body's natural flow. At least that was what Miria was told and the Co...Skyglow was fine with just listening for now. If Miria was imparted any particularly useful knowledge in particular good for her. If not she had spent a nice day outside, either way looked to make this day seem nice.
“Well now. Welcome. It's nice to have people come along with an interest in working to help Avanthal. I imagine most of you are here to learn djed to join the Icewatch but if your not don't worry about it. All Vantha work to keep Avanthal safe and it's queen happy. Now then let's start off with explaining what djed is.”
Bringing out a carved square Miria found herself at a lost as the man described the square in such an odd context. Was it djed that made it wood? Or was it djed that made it a square piece of wood? Was it both? The Skyglow could not quite grasp it. Repeating after the instructor Miria felt uneasy not quite understanding what was suppose to be a universally simple concept.
“Djed cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.” Cutting the wood in half the instructor explained that it was now triangle djed. It was the second part?
“Some forms of Djed are purer then others.” Since the archer wasn't told anything otherwise she had to trust that was the truth.
“Some transformations are irreversible.” Watching the pieces of wood be burned this tenement was easy for Miria to understand. There was no way, even with the remaining ashes to have it be the same piece of wood.
After a quick session of how one attains djed and it's implications the little lesson was over with the pair handing out instructions to where they can find teachers for all the acceptable uses of magic around Avanthal. Auristics, morphing, projection, shielding, flux? Really?, Some of the Icewatch even used reinmancy. “Of course the more dangerous stuff on the list is scrutinized more but you'll find what is right and wrong as you go about learning with your various instructors." Looking at the possible personal magics one stood out to Miria. “Oh we use hypnotism?”
“Ehh some of the Skyglow say it helps with interrogation with the people in the prison. Though I suggest you learn something else just incase”
I'm a Skyglow! Such an odd coincidence. Remembering tidbits from Vaspira's stay Miria tried to recall what the feline kelvic shared with her. Hypnotism could be considered the artsy discipline among personal magic. An odd sentiment to muse over but interesting all the same. Was this my art all along?
“Thank you. I might just do that.” Miria's heart raced at the sudden epiphany then slowed entirely. Hiding herself away Miria hunched over slightly feeling once more that tugging pain inside of her. She was not well.
It was a long night in her arvinta that day spending most of it just trying to remember what the Icewatch guard and then in turn what Vaspira said about Hypnotism. Djed was what made her, her. So what would happen if she put parts of her into that closed off shell of djed everyone had around them. Was that how it worked?
Miria need to try this out. Hopping alongside her bed came the perfect candidate for Miria's shenanigans. Just like the man said before Miria tried to imagine herself as a clean slate of pure djed trying to feel that which was under the surface. “This is absolutely mental.” Still Miria closed her eyes and tried to see the world like many unbelieving initiates did before her.
Now was to put the body's djed to use. Imagine your body's sphere of influence, your shell rather and just try putting it in your intended target and see what happens. “Here Honey! Here boy! Here Honey Bun Buns!” The hare pausing slightly looked back at Miria with apt attention. That was just probably a response to his name... once he sees that I don't have food he'll just hop off. Miria's resolve shaking her trusted pet shook it's tail indignantly at it's owner still deciding what it wanted to do.
That Honey has been frozen for a long time. “Here Honey Bunny! Momma wants you to come here.” What happened next surprised the archer to say the least. For the first time in a long time she watched as Honey bounded himself forward. Though this time it wasn't away from her out of random rabbit fear this time Honey was actually hopping to her as quickly as he could before hopping near Miria's feet. Looking up once more Miria shakily leaned over and picked up the small hare. " It actually worked. Ahah!”
“But why didn't you come the first few times I asked?” Surprisingly enough the hare spoke to Miria addressing that Hypnotism was purely suggestion and conditioning. ”Put out enough of the suggestion and a mere hare like me could not resist your will.“ Miria's eyes opening in shock the archer held out Honey with two hands watching her pet's mouth move in time with her thoughts. “Oh... I was just imagining that you were talking.” “I am a hare of very few words.”
Just to make sure Miria checked the hare from top to bottom to make sure there wasn't something strange about Honey. This was her Honey right? What else did Vassy do? Oh that's right! Invoke emotional responses. Concentrating hard on Honey Miria gazed upon Honey with fierce intent. What am I doing? Soon the hare seemed to be getting aptly impatient as with a push off her hand freed himself from Miria's clutches before hopping away from the trainee neophyte. “What? No! Honey come back here.”
A bit later Miria quickly started to tire as she chased her hare around for the better part of a chime. “I can't ever catch that hare when I want to.” Seeing the shape of her favorite snow hare Miria got into a croutching position staring intently at the difficult little hare. With confidence came better results and as if on cue Honey once again came back to Miria's side.
So I guess it wasn't a fluke after all. Stroking Honey lovingly her fluffy pet settled down in her arms as Miria gazed wonderingly out at the nearby window. What did I do wrong last time? Recalling what went amiss Miria settled first settled on an emotion before trying her hypnotism on the hare.
Once, twice, three times even Miria projected the feeling at Honey until a response came. Letting out a shrill cry Honey forced himself closer to Miria nuzzling the now smiling Vantha with much enthusiasm. “So I can provide emotional responses of love and caring huh?” Holding Honey close Miria went to bed with a smile learning something new. So this was why people practiced with djed.
