Caran of the Icewave Pod Appearance Race: Svefra Sex: Female Birthday: 90th of Winter, 486 AV Birthplace: Southern Ahger Ocean Appearance: The clear blue eyes that define the Svefra race are also prominent in Caran, her birthright and a symbol of her claim over the sea. She has the pale skin, fair features, and bearing of her people with nearly pale blonde hair and a dark smile full of delicious secrets. She dresses in shifts or loose clothes following in the style of the inhabitants of the Western Ocean's coasts. She favours glass beads and little baubles from the Inarta in her hair and quite likes the fashion of the Myrians, wearing little pieces of bone or odds and ends from ships and people she has pilfered in the past. She is tall, at five feet and eight inches in height, and weighs at a hundred and sixty pounds. She is quick with smiles, grinning merrily as she drinks among her brothers and sisters, and yet can sober up in an instant if news of a pirate act reaches her. She is one to readily answer to the aid of another Svefra against any outsider race and deals with pirates as harshly as she must. Character Concept Amongst the right people, Caran can be quite nice, actually. She is a laughing, flirtatious woman with great courage and a level head. There has been hardship in her past, which can explain the mass migration of her pod to the Suvan Sea, and will talk about it with inquirers readily, believing in telling the story will help others sober up to the reality of the world and it's unexpected changes. Among outsiders, especially non-Svefra pirates, Caran is downright cruel. She will show no quarter, to anybody, and has taken care of crying infants aboard unspoken for ships herself when her younger relatives hesitate, dropping them into the water to be claimed by Laviku. She doesn't relate well to outside influence, choosing to imitate the style of clothing from a distance rather than get in close and make nice. However, necessity has always dictated she approach the land dwelling races for necessity and she has, although grudgingly and with a great deal of mistrust. She believes the Storm that wiped out most of her pod and others in the Ahger Ocean was caused by one of the non-Svefra. She believes it is only a matter of time before somebody does something again and destroys more Svefra lives. Caran is faithful to Laviku, the Seagod, primarily, as well as Leth for moving the water with his rise and set. Her pod has often been notorious for the worship of darker gods, as Rhysol and Akajia, as well as unusual gods like Zulrav and Eywaat. Their reasons have always been their own, but this aspect of their traditions has faded somewhat since the mass destruction of their pod that left only a few casinors to float aimlessly and try to reclaim their names. Zulrav and Akajia have been the only gods besides Laviku that the survivors now carry near to their hearts, something Caran shares with and enforces among them. Character History Caran was once only the great-niece of the Lia, before the Spring Storm of 512 AV. Afterwards, she became the Lia's cousin and her adviser, helping her make the choices that would eventually lead the remnants of their pod into the Middle Suvan and gradually further north. As a child, she was left to her own devices for the most part, gladly living in the shadow of her cousin and her own older sister, amusing herself with little bits of sea glass and small ocean creatures that they would often find on the shores after the tide lowered. She bonded easily to the small otter she would encounter on one of her journey's to the wilderness near the camp of her mother's casinor and still fondly remembers that day, bearing the tattoo on her body to symbolise the bond that had formed and the sign that she was a full member of the pod, which was rewarded by the elaborate tattoo of the shark their pod had as Pardisa. She grew up healthy, eventually gaining her own casinor and finding courtship with a man from a neighbouring pod, but it changed with the Spring Storm and the destruction it wreaked. The Icewave had to abandon their ships and flee to cover underneath rocky outcroppings on the coast of southern Kalea, near the bog. Most of their tavans that did not have the time to flee deep down died that day, and their bonded Svefra followed them loyally. Of what was once a pod of around a hundred, the Icewave became a pod of ten. The bodies of their dead were gone when the storm ended, as though swallowed up by a great beast, and the Svefra remaining mourned the loss. It was at this time that Caran's cousin was named the Lia, as was tradition, and plans were made with haste to flee the forsaken land their pod nearly died in and find fortune elsewhere. Arrival in the Middle Suvan Sea took well over a year after that day in Spring and now the eight ships of the Icewave linger outside the nearest settlement, restocking their supplies in the preparation for further migration. Language Fluent Language: Fratava Basic Language: Common Gnosis Oceanus: At the first level of this Gnosis, Marked individuals can first and foremost spot Otani readily. Otani will recognize them and often seek them out to play and communicate. Individuals with one Laviku mark can also drink salt water and have the mark automatically convert it to fresh water for ocean survival. Individuals know the direction of the sea if they are on land and how far away it is (in aprox miles). They also immediately recognize where progression tide is, meaning if it is incoming or outgoing or in transition between. Its appearance is as stylised waves spreading across Caran's chest, prominently displayed. Tavan Yolis A female otther, Yolis was Caran's first Tavan and the one she remembers dearly as being a close friend. She was unremarkable in every way but for her playfulness, which Caran often thought of as more free than the other otters she ever saw. Yolis passed away in Caran's twelfth year, making two years as the girl's Tavan. Carin A bottlenose dolphin picked up off the shores of Kalea, Carin bonded with Caran as the Svefra tended to his wounds and helped keep him safe from would-be predators. He became her Tavan when she was thirteen and died when she was twenty, marking a long and happy time for Caran. Tva A hammerhead shark, Tva came to Caran in a time of need. She represented a cold, indomitable will and a fierceness not many sea creatures ever possessed. She was more distant than Caran's other Tavan, but friendlier than other sharks, straying close to the Tavan of Caran's family and showing no desire to eat them. Sadly, Tva perished in the Djed Storm of 512 AV. Caran has not taken a Tavan since then.

His glare is dour and impressive, his war cry a brutal sound of passion and fearlessness, and his smiles tender and loving, when they come. He is filled with emotion, not always good ones, but his love holds steadfast for his family throughout it all. He shares a casinor with Corinthe, his wife. He currently doesn’t have a tavan, his previous one having perished. She is a troubled soul, uncertain of her lot in life, but leads her people with passion and personality enough to stunt the growth of anyone’s doubts in her abilities. She is friendly and personable, loyal to a fault, but isn’t ignorant to the possible future of her pod. She will fall into a brooding silence if left alone. Her tavan is a hammerhead shark named Deva. Name: Corinthe Icewave Date of Birth: 12th of Fall, 489 AV Sex: Female Race: Svefra Skills: Navigation 30; Medicine 20 Gnosis: Healing 1 Description: Corinthe is the Icewave’s resident peace keeper. She is a demure woman, almost completely introverted, and rarely comes out of her shell unless the nearby topics are medicine, sailing, navigation, or the purpose of life. She is often philosophical, however her words are often shrouded in many meanings, making her seem somewhat mystical. She shares a casinor with Alex, her husband. Her tavan is an albatross named Tarnsel. Name: Tval Icewave Date of Birth: 78th of Summer, 486 AV Sex: Male Race: Svefra Skills: Shortbow 10; Sailing 20; Navigation 20 Description: Tval is an easygoing person, much easier to relate to due to his cheerful attitude and tendency to humanise himself. Even so, he can be menacing if it so suits him, as most of the Icewave are capable of doing so, and this change in him is startling to those that know him personally. His tavan is an orca whale named Orolis. Name: Torsal Icewave Date of Birth: 87th of Summer 489 AV Sex: Male Race: Svefra Skills: Fishing 30; Sewing 10; Morphing 10 Gnosis: Oceanus 1 Description: Torsal is a free spirited member of the pod, able to be non-judgemental and friendly to even the worst sort of company. He is often smiling, showing his sharpened teeth in his shudder-inducing grins, although he typically means no harm with them. Like most of the rest of the pod, his fearlessness and fierceness as well as eagerness to fight is an overwhelming force to be reckoned with. If he got close enough to somebody, he could try to rip out chunks of their flesh with little warning. He doesn’t have a Tavan, however he will often assume the form of a tiger shark to help assist in fishing and attacking in the water. Name: Dorsal Icewave Date of Birth: 87th of Summer 489 AV Sex: Male Race: Svefra Skills: Sailing 10; Observation 10; Playing Musical Instrument –Drums 30 Gnosis: Audius 1 Description: Dorsal, like his brother, is an easygoing, fun-loving Icewave. He can laugh at himself, take a tease with grace, and is openly accepting of criticism and threats, often trading his own. He doesn’t fight, at least not willingly, but will rouse the pod up in times of crisis with his drumming and singing (he can’t sing well, but it does the job). His earning of Rhaus’s mark is a secret, even among most of the family, but when he brings out his drums the questions no longer matter. His Tavan is a bottlenose dolphin named Scrap. The poor creature is often harassed by the other, more predatory, Tavan that swim with the pod. Travelling Companion Name: Laudrel Icewave Date of Birth: Summer 14th 500 AV Sex: Female Race: Svefra Skills: Fishing 10; Navigation 10; Swimming 10 Gnosis: Oceanus 1 Description: The daughter of Caran’s older sister, Laudrel is the spitting image of her deceased mother and a reminder of what had been but would never be again. Orphaned in the Djed Storm that had destroyed the members of the pod with impunity, Caran took her role as aunt to Laudrel seriously and invited the girl to stay on board. Laudrel took time to come out of her shell and demonstrated, once out, that she could be as proud and stubborn as Caran. She is prideful, independent, and loves to spend more time in the sea than on land. Her tavan is a tiger shark with the name of Carsis.
