Laudrel was complaining, again. The mutters Caran was able to hear were pointed, barbed things, but Caran couldn't hear what it was she was complaining about in full. Having to clean? Was that really such a problem? When she was Laudrel's age...

"Gods, I hate this," Laudrel muttered, cutting off Caran's thoughts with a loud enough complaint. Caran gave her a look, but the young woman didn't see it. "Can we make land already?"

"No." Caran replied, firm and incisive. She didn't even have to look at Laudrel to see her expression. "We have some place to be, Laudrel. Land will make us later than the others are going to be. Do you want to go to land so much you'll not be there when we take those pirates?"

Laudrel didn't reply, and thinking she had managed to make her quiet, Caran returned to sailing. The girl went back to her cleaning, tending to the mast every so often when it seemed the wind was more favourable. That annoyed Caran considerably. The mast should be fully open so they could travel as fast as possible and there Laudrel was playing with it whenever the wind died down. After a few times this happened, she finally was frustrated enough to turn around and look at her niece.

"If you don't leave it open I swear I'll throw you into the sea and leave you here," she snapped.

Laudrel looked around, evidently interested in the idea, but her interest turned to dismay as soon as she realised the nearest strip of land had to be a full day's swim from where they were.

"But there is no land," she moaned. "You'd drown me!"

Caran gave her a disgusted look and turned back to the tiller, righting her course after glancing at the sun and realising they were veering straight north rather than north-west as she had wanted.

"Grow up already," she said. "There is land ahead."

"How do you know that?" Laudrel moped.

...

The sun had traveled far before they reached land, but it was only in the last two bells that Caran truly regretted letting Laudrel sea the strip on the horizon. It was a small island that Caran could just barely make out before, but as the slim casinor approached they could see the island was actually quite large, intimidating, and covered beyond ten metres of the shore with lush foliage. The shore was dark, the sand apparently not being pale tan like it was on other shores, and that was interesting beyond anything else.

"We are settling here for the night, Laudrel," Caran said as they neared the island. The closer they got, the choppier the waters were. Caran dropped the mast and then lowered the anchor into the dark waters, feeling the ship come to a halt as it caught on something unseen in the depths. Below the waves, Caran could make out moving shapes, but whether they were animals or seaweed or driftwood, she didn't know.

"Get your things and make for land," she told her niece as she collected some belongings from below deck and then leapt overboard and into the water, trusting in Laviku's good will that there wouldn't be something large and menacing down there ready to eat them.

A dark fin broached the water beside the Casinor, small eddies swirling around its progress through the water, but as Laudrel launched herself from the bow into the murky depths, it became quite apparent that this predator was none other than Carsis, who had been slowly circling the ship on their journey. Filled up from a few snacks on the journey, Laudrel giggled as the shark playfully rammed her within the water.

The shore was less beach than it was rocks, jagged peaks with small bars of dark, rough sand. Despite the nature of the beach, the small island that they had found had lush vegetation, perhaps home to more than a few edible plants if one cared to take a look, though it was doubtful the small space provided much room to support fauna aside from the occasional migratory bird.

Surfacing after an extended amount of time under the water, and not even attempting to aid Caran with tying off the ship the young Svefra blew out a spout of water. "So...what are we going to eat then?"

Large blue eyes gazed up expectantly at her caretaker, the tiger shark circling around her floating body in a lazy manner. It was a question that of course, Laudrel knew the answer to. Her aunt knew things about fishing, and though Laudrel knew her way around the water, as well as a boat, she had never professed an interest in catching fish. Carsis did that well enough on his own, and why compete with a shark?
