Rengar was looking down at the many piles of logs the Dek were sorting for him. He couldn't believe that these people thought it was a good idea to use different types of wood when building the boardwalk. If you kept the woods the same, they warped less, and made repair and maintenance that much easier. One Dek had just brought over a light barked log, and Rengar called out, "Oak, fourth pile." Then he saw another Dek trying to put a pine in with the maple, "Hey! Pay attention, I said sixth pile, not seventh. Do you not know how to count?" Garren decided to chime in from within, 'You realize that is a distinct possibility right?' which Rengar just ignored.
Another Dek was struggling with an ash log, so Rengar went over to help. He bent at the knees, gripped the tough bark, and lifted, ensuring to keep his back in line so as to not hurt himself. Slowly he walked backwards, the Dek carrying the other end, until they reached the appropriate pile. They swung the log onto the pile, Rengar watching some of the bark exploding off. He turned to leave, when Garren wrested control from him.
"Stop, look, beneath the bark."
Rengar could see what Garren indicated, several stretched rings, not in the bark, but in the wood itself. He grabbed his carving axe, and began carving the bark away, finding more and more of the rings. He yelled out to the Deks, "Stop everything. One of you, where did this ash log come from?"
A man who appeared to have been severely burned in a fire answered, "A small hillock, about a bell southeast from here."
"Burn all of these ash logs, and strip the bark from the rest of the logs, and burn that too."
Rengar's boss approached him, "What are you doing Rengar, we can't just go wasting supplies like this? Why are you ordering them to burn the logs?" Rengar pointed to the rings, "See that? That's a disease that ravages ash wood. We need to burn these, and the disease may be in the bark of the other woods. It won't hurt them, but we can't have it spreading. I'm going to take a few people up to this hillock, find as many of these trees that I can, and try and stop the disease, if possible."
The boss looked perplexed at first, after all he was just a manager of Thunder Bay, and not a woodsman. "Fine fine, do what you must, might I recommend a certain Chiet though? She's been seen in the wilderness before, and her talents lie there. Her name is Enria. I'll have her fetched for you, and she'll be here within the bell."
"Sounds good, let us hope it's not too bad. It could devastate these forests if not handled immediately and properly."
His boss disappeared with a Dek, likely to make arrangements for this Enria to come down to Thunder Bay, to join Rengar and two Dek on this escapade. Rengar quickly set about to gather his cutting supplies, as well as his weapons, and his flint and tinder, awaiting the arrival of this Enria. |
