There's a Fungus Among Us (Enria)

Rengar was looking down at the many piles of logs the Dek were sorting for him. He couldn't believe that these people thought it was a good idea to use different types of wood when building the boardwalk. If you kept the woods the same, they warped less, and made repair and maintenance that much easier. One Dek had just brought over a light barked log, and Rengar called out, "Oak, fourth pile." Then he saw another Dek trying to put a pine in with the maple, "Hey! Pay attention, I said sixth pile, not seventh. Do you not know how to count?" Garren decided to chime in from within, 'You realize that is a distinct possibility right?' which Rengar just ignored.

Another Dek was struggling with an ash log, so Rengar went over to help. He bent at the knees, gripped the tough bark, and lifted, ensuring to keep his back in line so as to not hurt himself. Slowly he walked backwards, the Dek carrying the other end, until they reached the appropriate pile. They swung the log onto the pile, Rengar watching some of the bark exploding off. He turned to leave, when Garren wrested control from him.

"Stop, look, beneath the bark."

Rengar could see what Garren indicated, several stretched rings, not in the bark, but in the wood itself. He grabbed his carving axe, and began carving the bark away, finding more and more of the rings. He yelled out to the Deks, "Stop everything. One of you, where did this ash log come from?"

A man who appeared to have been severely burned in a fire answered, "A small hillock, about a bell southeast from here."

"Burn all of these ash logs, and strip the bark from the rest of the logs, and burn that too."

Rengar's boss approached him, "What are you doing Rengar, we can't just go wasting supplies like this? Why are you ordering them to burn the logs?" Rengar pointed to the rings, "See that? That's a disease that ravages ash wood. We need to burn these, and the disease may be in the bark of the other woods. It won't hurt them, but we can't have it spreading. I'm going to take a few people up to this hillock, find as many of these trees that I can, and try and stop the disease, if possible."

The boss looked perplexed at first, after all he was just a manager of Thunder Bay, and not a woodsman. "Fine fine, do what you must, might I recommend a certain Chiet though? She's been seen in the wilderness before, and her talents lie there. Her name is Enria. I'll have her fetched for you, and she'll be here within the bell."

"Sounds good, let us hope it's not too bad. It could devastate these forests if not handled immediately and properly."

His boss disappeared with a Dek, likely to make arrangements for this Enria to come down to Thunder Bay, to join Rengar and two Dek on this escapade. Rengar quickly set about to gather his cutting supplies, as well as his weapons, and his flint and tinder, awaiting the arrival of this Enria.

There's a Fungus Among Us (Enria)

Enria hunched forward, reluctantly following the Dek, toward Thunder Bay where she was told to report. She had been drawing in her room, when she was told to come to the Bay. The walk towards it consisted, mostly, of uncomfortable silences with Enria asking questions to the Dek to find out why she was suppose to go. But it was clear the Dek knew nothing more than what he had told her. If anything, Enria was rather annoyed at having her peaceful morning drawing session in her room disrupted by being dragged to the boardwalk. But she knew she was in no position to argue with an Avora.

As she neared the boardwalk, she noticed the flames licking around trees like savages. Her eyes widened, not expecting to see such disregard for nature. Enria had a simple view of nature that for a person to live a full life was to respect its beauty for such arrogance to disregard it could cost you dearly; she only took from nature when she needed to, like when she hunted. Her brow knitted together in silent concern as she witnessed the scene before her.
But it was something about the flames that drew Enria in. They seemed so entrancing, almost like they were dancing a victory lap around the trees that seemed to be suffocating in the flames. This was not the first, nor would it be the last, where Enria was lost for a moment by fire. There was just something in the mystery, beauty and danger that fire held that captured her attention. But there was something about this particular smell of burning that clawed at Enria’s nose which she scrunched in protest. This burning smelt different, wrong even.

Enria had almost forgotten why she was here, but a small sharp grunt by a Dek snapped her back to reality. The Dek pointed her in the direction of a small party that was waiting, staring at her. She nodded and walked in the direction of the party.

As she approached, the conversation of the group died down. But it was not the lull in the conversation that peeked Enria’s interest. It was a tall well-built man who had caramel eyes and scruffy clothes that mesmerised her with his skin bathing in a purple hue.

“What are you?” She asked curiously, her native tongue spilling out. “Who are you?”

Enria stood staring at the strange man, was he the one who had sent for her? If so what did he want? She stood, silently, waiting for an answer.

Rengar didn't speak Nari, so he had a nearby Dek translate for him. And the translation caused his face, and mood, to sour, especially since he'd been told the woman was Chiet. This woman clearly didn't know her place in this society, nor knew the appropriate manners for one above her caste. "Do not speak to me like that, chick. I am Rengar, the woodsman. I am also an Akalak, an Avora, and your superior. Learn your manners lest you want your wings clipped." He crossed his arms, as Dumois, his supervisor in Thunder Bay arrived with two Dek.

"I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it Rengar, you are quite the unusual sight dear friend." Rengar smiled broadly at the dreaded man, "At least my hair doesn't look like shyke and smell worse than it." The two laughed together loudly, then Rengar turned to Enria, "My friend here recommended you to assist me with a very important task. All these trees we're burning may be infected with a dangerous blight. We will be going to a hillock nearby, locating the infected ash trees, and destroying them. I'm told you're good in the wilds, and who knows, maybe a Chiet like you could learn a little something, if you can mind your manners. Now, do you have everything you need? Because we need to leave immediately."

Then Garren decided to take over, and Rengar had no problem with this. Besides, his brother could never resist a pretty face.

You know me so well brother.

Well, we have been together for a few years, give or take.

Oh, so now YOU'RE the one doing jokes.

Garren smiled down at the little red head, "I apologize for my brother, he's such an uptight stickler for rules and protocols. Don't worry, he always gets a little edgy when an emergency arrives. If we don't nip this in the bud, we could lose much more than a few trees. Let's go, maybe you could tell me a bit about yourself Enria, I do so love chatting with a beautiful young woman." With that, Garren through his hatchet onto his shoulders, his arms hanging over it, and began hiking southeast, toward the tree line, back into the forest he loved.

There's a Fungus Among Us (Enria)

As the Dek translated what she had said to the stranger into common, she began to tense. The mood seemed to drop to a frosty reception, once he understood what she had said. She began to feel uncomfortable under his direct gaze. He addressed her but all Enria could grasp with her basic knowledge of common was the he was an Akalak, though she wasn’t entirely sure what that was and what it meant, but she did understand that he was an Avora, which indeed make him a superior to her. But what really enraged Enria were the insults he spat at her, it felt almost like a slap in the face; perhaps she would have preferred that. She bit her tongue out of respect but also try not to show the hurt that he inflicted to her.

Enria hadn’t felt like what she had asked him was of that much offence, let alone of the insults he flung at her like she was a Dek. If anything she was wary of the stranger. She wanted to find out who he was, what he was and why he was here. She had always been wary of people that weren’t her own – it was like a safety mechanism that tried to protect her from getting hurt by a potential threat. She didn’t mean to come across as rude, let alone an Inarta who did not know her place; she understood perfectly well where she was in the hierarchy and took it as an insult that this stranger would accuse her of that ignorance. These thoughts baited her growing anger and hurt at him. But she felt the urge to explain herself, prove her case.

She stood straighter, looked at him square in the eye, whilst he folded his arms as if needing a barrier to hold in his anger. She was about to reply, ready to explain herself, before Dumois arrived with two Deks in tow. She had only heard tid bits of information on Dumois that circled around Wind Reach; nothing substantial but enough to warn Enria that he may chide her for being so ‘rude’ to one of his colleagues. But as she tried to wade through the confusing common language that he picked up on her thoughts on the stranger. She was about to agree before the stranger addressed her again.

He mentioned that the trees they were burning were infected and they needed her to help them see if there were anymore by taking them the hillock nearby. Enria was confused by this, she didn’t think trees could be ‘infected’, let alone why that means they have to be destroyed instead of treated; like when an Inarta is ill, they do not kill them but they treat them with medicines. Why the, in Enria’s eyes, senseless destruction?

He had almost mentioned that she would need her things because they were leaving immediately. She looked around for the Dek who had been carrying her bag and sword. They had warned her prior to leading her to the Bay that she needed to be prepared but for what they didn’t know. She grabbed anything that could be of use and a weapon in case the worse came to the worse; besides it always made Enria feel safer to have her sword by her side, she felt less vulnerable then. She then proceeded to made them carry it because they hadn’t told her why she needed it.

A Dek appeared to her right and held out her things. She placed her sword by her side and her bag over her shoulder. All the while being watched by him, who Enria had noticed hadn’t introduced himself. Were they in such a hurry that he couldn’t even introduce himself? She turned to face him again but his demeanour had changed, which unsettled Enria. Everything about this whole situation and the man standing before her began to confuse her more, but the more confused Enria got the more interested she was in finding out what it was that made them so confusing to her in the first place.

"I apologize for my brother, he's such an uptight stickler for rules and protocols. Don't worry, he always gets a little edgy when an emergency arrives. If we don't nip this in the bud, we could lose much more than a few trees. Let's go, maybe you could tell me a bit about yourself Enria, I do so love chatting with a beautiful young woman."

What? Enria seemed confused. One minute this man had insulted her then the next minute he was blaming it on a brother she couldn’t see. What was going on? Enria certainly was not expecting this when she was told to report to the Bay.

“I…I…” Enria fumbled around for something she could ask him. She seemed to be at the disadvantage of not being informed just who exactly was standing in front of her and that frustrated her. Her brow furrowed in concentration as she tried so desperately to find something to say about this situation which was growing more confusing by the minute.

“I’m not quite sure I follow.” She looked toward the man who had begun to walk towards the tree line. She hurried to catch him up. “I didn’t mean to…be rude…I’ve just never met a purple man before.”

After a moment or two, Enria added, under her breath, as if she were speaking merely to herself. “You confuse me.”

Enria, although still hurt by his earlier comments, decided to offer an olive branch. She needed to be on good terms with him if they were going to work together effectively and besides if she befriended him maybe he would clear up a few things about himself that puzzled her. That and hopefully he could teach her something.

She picked up the pace, edging slightly in front of him, and began to lead him into the forest. She took a large inhale of the scent, feeling slightly calmer as she began leading them to the hillock he had mentioned earlier.

Bonus:

Additional Comments: I gave you a point in interrogation for some of the questioning of who Rengar was. It sucks it ended so abruptly and I wish I could give you more. I tried to reward what I could.

Make sure you update your age if you wish to post it in your CS :) It isn't a requirement, only your birthdate is. Also your ledger is a little difficult to comprehend. Using a table will make it easier to keep track of everything overall, from start of play to present.
