The Ehktar Pass
While the Unforgiving does not have roads that wind through the mountains, there are, nevertheless, passes and trails that have seen more footfall than other areas of Kalea. The Ehktar Pass is one of these. Nestled a few days march from Alvadas, if one were to walk as the crow flies towards Kalinor, they would stumble upon this break in the mountains.
The Ehktar Pass is one of the few areas in Kalea where the ground is nearly at sea level. Nestled between two fearsome peaks, the Pass is devoid of vegetation, save some shrubs and low-lying plants that can survive without much rich soil. The Pass itself is made up of broken rocks that have tumbled from the mountains above and shattered in the valley, forming a sort of flat walk way between the peaks. Often the Pass seems to be covered with fog, though this is really dust particles displaced in the air from the rockfalls that occur in the mountains. It would take two days to walk from end to end of the Pass.
Travellers are extremely wary of the Ehktar Pass when moving through the Unforgiving. Not only is the Pass itself treacherous, devoid of water, plants and games, and the ground covered with unstable rocks, the threat of further rockfall everpresent, but so too is there a secret danger that lurks beneath the crevices.
The Unforgiving has one of the largest Zith concentrations in Mizahar, the winged pests living in colonies in the mountains, and they have taken advantage of the Pass. Using their knowledge of surviving in the mountains, the Zith often use the Ehktar Pass as a place of ambush for unwitting travellers, taking them dead or alive, as meat or as slaves. For this reason, none but the very foolish or the very skilled would choose to take the Ehktar Pass, and it is recommended that if done so, it is done with many swords and a watchful eye.
