Task: Flashback Meeting Ialari
Location: Gyvaka Swamp
People: Ialari
The girl stood in the stand at the edge of the water. She came daily waiting for the big ship to pass by. Ozantha, her mentor, had said it was overdue, so rather than waiting for the sailors to make the trek inland once they'd landed, she'd started sending Haeli out to the beach to see if she could spot the traders. Haeli wasn't sure why it was exactly so important. Oazntha was worried because she was almost out of sugar and flour for her cooking which Haeli didn't see as exactly a crisis. They could go to Zinrah and trade or else live off the swamp without bread and salt for a bit longer. Besides, she knew how to dry sea water to make salt. Everyone did didnt' they? All you did was leave shallow trays of water out in the sun and let the heat cook the water off leaving only the salt behind. Sure, it took a lot of trays of water and a lot of hot days, but salt was free in essence, wasn't it?
Besides what the traders brought wasn't always the best, even though the pair gave forth their best herbals and poisons in exchange.
Haeli resented the run out to the beach. It took her away from her study so she'd adopted a egret form after careful study of the birds. Flying, especially when it made the trip half again as short, was a far better option than running. Even when, as the girl had started to believe, there was not going to be a ship. And oh how she wanted one. Haeli missed the company of the sailors when they departed. Both men and women, the girl was fascinated wtih the crews and always asked them endless questions about where they came from and what they were doing and what they were using as tools and asked for news of the outside world.
Haeli hadn't been eager to open up to them at first. Having been born in a swamp and raised running wild, she was more apt to watch than talk. So it had taken years of visits by the same people over and over again to bring the little girl out of her shell.
Now, in her late teens, she was quite talkative and not unfamiliar with the sailors that routinely stopped for both fresh water at the coastal springs and for the trade with Ozantha.
Which brought her back to the reason she was standing on the beach in the sand staring out to sea. Sails. Big ones, tacking into the natural harbor and probably weighing anchor. Haeli wondered if they wanted to go see Ozantha or if she should go tell the witch that there indeed was a ship here and have her gather her tradegoods to be ready to trade. Haeli glanced at the sky and shook her head. No.. it was too late in the day. Ozantha wouldn't start out until early early morning the next day to make the quarter days sail by flatboat to the coast. The girl knew she might as well wait on the sand for the visitors to make landfall then greet them properly and tell them that Ozantha would be there the next day.
