A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

Forging in the Open

It was a warm morning, the way Doros loved them. He had learned to love the weather in Ravok for the little while he had been in the city, it seemed to be just right, although he believed it was likely because that was the best season to be in the city. Being so far north as it was, the city would probably get too cold in the Winter. But this fact had confused him since his arrival, as the city itself did not seem quite prepared to deal with a harsh cold weather. How would those ravosalas move in frozen water?

Having had enough of his short reverie, the Isur threw on the floor the remaining pieces of wrought iron he had been given by his new contact in the Docks. He had plenty of work to do, and as such he couldn't be happier. All an Isur needs to be entertained is a hammer, a furnace and some scrap. He had many other different activities to entertain him back at home, but that was a very different situation for him. Now he needed to work to pay for a living in a foreign place, and that was exactly what he intended to do.

His portable forge was all spread on the wooden floor, the anvil waiting for the impact of the hammer, the iron pieces getting warm in the sun and the furnace filled with charcoal and burning with fire. Various hammers of different shapes and sizes rested in a small open wooden box. The tools were simple and generally small, in a sense that he could not produce anything of incredible quality with them, but this specific work was simple enough for him. He could not wait enough to scrap the rust off his long unused smithing abilities.

The Docks were the best place for him to work, as the forging noise and fumes were sure to get him kicked out of Tarsin's Boarding House. Surely he would attract plenty of looks out in the open simply for being an Isur in a human city, but he had grown to enjoy the attention, and he needed to get himself some fame. Perhaps he'd even find some new clients in the docks? Surprisingly most people seemed to know much about his race in Ravok, which Doros found quite interesting when considering the distance of the place from Mt. Izurith and the common isolationism of his people for the past hundreds of years. Even under such circumstances it seemed other Isur must have had left quite an image in the city recently. Perhaps other Isur even still live in Ravok? The idea seemed unlikely.

His green arm buried a piece of wrought iron into the fire of the burning furnace. The bigger part of it was burning under the flames, slightly changing into warm colors, and the rest of the bar was kept safe from the flames. He would soon begin his work, hence he removed his shirt and threw it near the pile of iron on the floor, exposing his silver-veined chest. That was best to deal with the forge heat as well as keeping the fabric safe from the work. Ideally he'd have a blacksmith apron to wear for work, but his old one had been lost, and while he enjoyed showing his physique in public, sometimes it could be risky to work bare-chested. Perhaps the gold from this job could be used to buy himself a new apron, as he was still unsure of what use he would put to it. In a sense returning to the forge was even more rewarding than the thought of earning coins itself.

It took a chime or two for the metal to shine brightly with a light yellow color. The Isur identified this moment with a glance, and picked the colder area of the bar with his right hand. The other end of the piece burned in heat, and was soon surrounded by his green left hand. The metallic hand squeezed and pulled the iron, drawing the metal and giving it a new shape, as easily as if it were clay. Doros only needed it to be a rough shape, even after having had this done so many times he was still quite horrible at this molding process. Perhaps he could practice it with actual clay some other time. He only needed to elongate the bar this time, however, even a child could do it right.

As the yellow brightness slowly faded into red, and then into the metal's original black color, the bar gained shape as it was guided by the emerald hand. It could perhaps not seem much surprising to the common observer, but this simple molding step would have required a lot of heating and hammering to be achieved without an Isurian arm. Doros could only thank his deity for his Isur blood, as that alone was quite a time saver and allowed him a much better productivity.

After separating the newly shaped piece from the rest, he glanced at the rest of the bars with a raised eyebrow, they were all cold on the floor. He would have to heat and work each piece individually, shape and mold and separate the iron into general shapes similar to the one he had first created, only to then hammer them and give the iron a more precise shape. Those were the general steps he would have to follow, but did he truly have to do each one at a time? Doros looked at the forge thinking of a way to organize the work in order to make it happen more efficiently. The iron could not be overheated, as that would ruin its structure, so he would have to remove the pieces from the fire at the right time. It could not be too cold either, otherwise he would not be able to properly shape it with his metallic hand.
