Bernedett walked in through the front door of the Library, past the stone busts, and up to the front desk. There, he saw a woman. He suspected that this was the Librarian, Lisaelis. He had been told that he would have to report to her when he wished to begin.
Bernedett walked over to the desk. "Hello. Are you the Head Librarian? I'm Bernedett. I've been hired to help with the restoration of some of the books here."
She looked up from her paperwork, and and eyed Bernedett with a look of annoyance. She had apparently been in the middle of something important. "Yes, I am. I heard that they had hired on a bit more help, and gods know we need it. Just fallow me; I'll show you to our work area."
She led Bernedett to the back of the Library. She was rather quiet, and seemed agitated. They continued until, finally, they reached their destination.
Bernedett saw that a desk had been fitted against the back wall, and had been piled high with dozens of large, and very old, tomes. Bernedett was overwhelmed! He had apparently not known what he had signed up for.
"Here is your work area. You won't be expected to finish them all today, of course, but we do expect you to work for at least a few hours. Now, I must return to my own work."
After that, she walked away, leaving Bernedett to his first day's work. |

"Well... about time I got to work."
Bernesett walked over to the desk, sat down, and grabbed a book from the pile to the left of him. He saw that there was a stack of papers, as well as bottle of ink and a pen on his right. He grabbed a few sheets, opened the book, dipped the pen in the ink, and began.
It began without a hitch. He got through the first few pages with little problem, but after that, he messed up a few times. He had to redo several pages, several times! Often, he had just lost his place, and ran a paragraph or two together.
Eventually, he had finished with the first book. It had taken him a while, almost five whole bells, but he had finished. Now it was time to get to the others... |

The next book was significantly smaller. It was a book covering the basic lore of Summoning, something that Bernedett was already fully aware of.
"How boring. I was hoping to find something more... advanced."
Jorgon continued with his work, and continued with relative ease. During his original training as a summoner, he had been forced to near memorize this book, so mistakes where not so common.
He finished in good time, and made good progress. He was even able to get two of the other smaller books finished by the time the library was set to close.
Bernedett stood up from his desk, and stretched himself out. Sitting behind a desk all day was not exactly his idea of a fun time. In fact, he was bored out of his mind! He had to do something quick, or he'd go insane!
He turned around, and started towards the exit. It was a bit of a walk(considering the vastness of the Library) and seemed oddly quiet. Library's were supposed to be quiet, of course, but even in the most silent of them, you could still hear books or chairs being shuffled around.
Bernedett shrugged off the silence, and continued. As he reached the door, he noticed something else that was rather odd... there were very lights on in the building at all. Enough to let him see where he's going, of course, but defiantly not enough to read or study by. When he finally reached the door... it wouldn't open.
"Wait a minute... what!?"
Bernedett pulled and pulled, but the door wouldn't budge! He looked around, and noticed, for the first time, that there was no one in the library, at all. Not even the Head Librarian.
"They didn't lock me in here did they!?" |

Bernedett was bored out of his mind. He had been sitting in this place for hours now, and he wasn't at all happy. How could they have forgotten him?! It wasn't like he was invisible or anything. Plus, he was an employee, so shouldn't someone have come back to check on him?!
"Well this is just great! Of course I'd get stuck here o the first day, and have absolutely no way out!"
Bernedett looked up suddenly. Was it possible that there was a spare key under the front desk? There had to be. Otherwise, what would they do if the first key went missing?
Bernedett rushed over, and started tearing the desk apart. He searched, and searched, and researched. He shifted through every cupboard, and drawers were over turned. He just couldn't find a key! However, as he stormed away, he saw something on the ground in front of the desk. It must have fallen off during the search.
It was a note from the head Librarian... addressed to him. As he read through the note, Bernedett was feeling all the more foolish. Apparently, Lisaelis had seen that he was working hard, and didn't want to disturb him. However, she still had to leave, due to some business she had to take care of. As a result, she left a note telling him that the spare key was under the entry mat, and that he could use it, and return it next time he came in.
Sure enough, when Bernedett checked the mat, there was the key. He also noticed that the door had been locked from the inside, not out, which would have been odd, had the situation not been explained.
Bernedett looked at the desk. It was a complete mess... he'd have to doo something about that... |
