A Book of Fabric

Two scraps of well worn leather with holes punched through create a makeshift binding for a book of cloth. The book is a weavers work, a life time of creation from the first time the weaver bends weft around warp. As with all things the early creations are rough, humbling attempts to create what the weaver's eye sees. The hands don't have the skill to keep up with the scope of color and pattern within the weaver's mind. Each scrap is better than the one before as the hands slowly catch up with imagination.

Each sample of cloth holds a bit of the weaver's life and soul. Each piece telling a tale as the threads wind between each other. Some fabrics are stiff, some too dense to use as anger, fear, frustration or other negative emotions caused the weaver to beat the weft too hard, jamming the threads as tightly together as the muscles in her tense shoulders. Other fabrics are sleazy, the wrap and weft gliding over each other in and endless dance with little to no structure at all. A weaver daydreaming, distracted, preoccupied with what life has given her.

Then there are the balanced fabrics with color, pattern, and texture all coming together to create exactly what the weaver's mind wished. This fabric is well suited to the purpose it was created to serve. This speaks of a weaver focused on her work and settled firmly in the present. A mind that either was unburdened or finally learned how to leave those burdens behind and enjoy the act of creation.

From child to adult, a weavers life told in warp and weft.
