[Opal Temple Grounds] Spring Sunshine

Spring 79, 490 AV
early afternoon

The morning was bright and clear and warm, the kind of day exactly perfect for being outside and enjoying the atmosphere of spring. Small wonder then, that Eleret took herself outdoors for today's studies, emerging into the gardens of the Opal Temple with a book in hand. Not a library book, forbidden as it was to remove them from the library, but a volume without obvious title on cover or spine, bound in the simple fashion typical of personal journals -- or in this case, an herbalism student's notebook.

Birds sang in haphazard chorus from the trees and bushes on the temple grounds, their twitters and chirps and warbles providing pleasant background noise. The crunch of loose gravel beneath her feet was no more obtrusive, being an accustomed sound. The Konti gave her attention more to the landscaping she walked past, whether tree-dappled shade or sunlit flowerbed, or the open expanses of green which stretched between. She had already perused much of the area immediately around the North Tower... which left the entire rest of the gardens open for today.

Undecided in the face of many options, Eleret decided to wander until something piqued her interest. The temple grounds were beautiful to look at, with many flowers now in the prime of their blooming season and others promising to emerge very soon. The Konti paused in her progress to admire the tall purple spires of a foxglove, gently leaning one forward to inhale its fragrance. This had the unintended consequence of letting several tiny black ants run over her fingers and get stuck there when she released the flower. There were really quite a lot of them scampering all over the plant. For lack of any better method, Eleret got rid of the ants by shaking her hand until they fell off; hopefully, they landed somewhere where they could readily get back to their business.

Foxglove, according to her notes, strengthens a weak or erratic heart, but must be used with caution. Too much can stop the heart.

A dangerous herb. But a lovely plant, also, Eleret mused, considering the densely planted bed with its rows of purple and white spires. Even the ants appreciated it, though undoubtedly for a different reason -- the nectar of the flowers, perhaps, or aphids hidden among its foliage.

Eleret sat beside the pebble-edged bed, turning her notebook around so the blank left page lay beneath her main hand. Then she set to sketching, adding a record of the plant to go with her notes on its function.

Every part but the roots is active; the leaves are most commonly used. Give no more than five grains ground leaf, or one ounce from a pint of water infused with a dram of leaf. Overdosing weakens the heart, brings paleness and lethargy, and can cause stomach pains, headaches, and rash.

A long, straight line for the central stem, thick at the base, fading away to an apical point. Flared triangles to represent the flowers, or flattened ellipses for ones facing the artist, crowded densely around the stem. Round buds towards the top, where blossoms had yet to open. Thin triangles for leaves, confined to the lower portion of the plant.

An overdose of foxglove can be treated with emetics, but these may further disrupt the heart. The better treatment is to administer a generally purifying and strengthening tonic with such ingredients as chamomile, dandelion, ground charcoal, and raspberry.

In the margins, she drew a leaf in detail: long and gradually tapering to a point, lightly toothed at the edges. A thick line down the center, but only little lines radiating to the sides. Also a flower, or an approximation of one: a trumpet with deep throat, curling petals, and white-edged dark flecks along its lower inside.

As botanical sketches went... well, it would never grace an herbal tome such as those her notes had been taken from. But it would stand for Eleret's own memory of these flowers, and in that serve her just fine.
