Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[The Sanctuary] Open petals in the Rain

An autumn storm had rolled in early this morning. It didnt look to be too serious however with high winds, heavy rain and low visibility made travelling nigh impossible and house ridden almost everyone. However Faryon doubt this weather could stop the mountain of muscle that made up the race of Akalak. Brushing the random thought aside, she continued to make her way to the library. She figured with this nasty weather the library was the perfect place to weather out the storm.

She was still trying to get her bearings since arriving here not too long ago. Just coming from the stables, to check on Kachal and Rhyni and how they were fairing with the new surroundings. Both would be antsy from being cooped up today so to help relieve them of some stress she brushed both thoroughly until their coats practically shined. Rhyni enjoyed the brushing more so than Kachal but he enjoyed the long rambling Faryon offered.

Faryon had also given them a mini check up. She could only offer basics but it was often the basics that helped the most. From the basics a healer could determine the root of a problem and go from there, however both passed the Faryon novice check.

Next was to muck out their stalls and fill them with fresh hay. The work was hard on her body but she enjoyed it. The smell of the horses mixed with the smell of hay was soothing to the Drykas, kinda reminded her of her pavilion back at the Sea of Grass. They would be in their fall location clearly on the other side of Cyphrus. Faryon was far too stubborn and wasnt ready to admit she was homesick because then that would mean her father was right, she shouldn't have left her pavilion. Faryon enjoyed working at the Sanctuary but she couldn't help but feel a slight tug to home.

The library was back at the front of the Sanctuary by the main entrance and kitchen so being in the back by the boarding stalls, Faryon had to deal with the rain some. Reaching the library 10 chimes later, the young Drykas was fairly wet. She stood in front of the fancy fireplace to dry off enough were she wouldn't mess up the beautiful furniture with water marks and stains.

Dry enough to be called semi damp she browsed the bookcase. Faryon already saw quite a few she would read and make notes from and as she continued it seemed she would most definitely at some point read them all. Not sure which book to start with she pulled out, Basic Medicines and a book by the simple title of Herbalism. She considered getting Introduction to Philtring as well but saved it for a later date. Faryon carried them to an empty desk, turn the light on and found a blank journal, quill, and a small bottle of ink.

Hm which one to start off with.. The girl closes her eyes and randomly twirled her hand over the two books and stopped landing over the Basic Medicines book. Smiling at her choice, she opened the leather bound book carefully.

Faryon skimmed through the index, most of the medicines she have heard of but never personally tried to make. Going to the first medicine listed as Sweet blossom tincture, she began copying the entry into her journal.

"Sweet blossom tincture: A liquid base medicine made from a strong mix of Sweet blossom leaves and clear spirits. The Sweet blossom is a flower that grows in dry arid desert regions.
Uses: This medicine is used to relieve a case of diarrhea."

The entry in the book had a rough sketch of a flower and labeled as Sweet blossom. Faryon had no artistic talent so she didn't even bother trying to copying the flower as well but instead burned it and its description into her memory. She knew she had dried sections of the flower already in her apothecary chest.

There was another entry about Sweet blossoms and it was titled Sweetblossom syrup. This particular medicine Faryon was familiar with, having to take the nasty concoction when she was young, when she had eaten a weird berry and cause her stomach to do 'flip-flops'. Thinking about it gave her the chills. She copied the entry as well.

"Sweet blossom syrup: A bitter syrup made from the stems of the Sweet blossom. The juices is very sticky and high in sugar content despite its bitter taste which comes from the chlorophyll.
Uses: Relieves the symptoms of indigestion and flatulence within the bell."

The page continued on to various tonics. She scanned them over. Chamayo tonic.. Mandrake tonic.. Hangover tonic.. Faryon was curious about the Mandrake one, her pavilion forbid the use or the making of this particular medicine due to the toxic nature of mandrakes.

"Mandrake Tonic: Made with chopped mandrakes soaked in various other warm liquids to mask the bitter flavor.
Uses: To relieve sore throats, coughs, labored breathing and restores lost voices.
WARNING: MANDRAKES ARE POISONOUS SO OVERDOSES WILL LEAD TO SICKNESS AND/OR DEATH. USE WITH CAUTION!"

The tonic itself seemed innocent enough and seemed pretty useful but Faryon decided to stay clear of it until she was more experienced. She flipped a few more pages and landed on a medicine she had never heard of before.

"Solily Tea: A soothing tea made from the roots of the Solily flower flower and mashed white willow bark. Both can be found in wet, marshy areas or along huge river banks and lakes. Drink one cup of tea three to four times daily for full effects.
Uses: Can be used as an anti-inflammatory or pain reducer. It also has high antioxidant, antiseptic and immune-boosting properties. This tea not only provides comfort from pain, but sustains overall health and wellness."

Faryon quickly scribbled the entry in her new journal, the handwriting was just barely legible, to all but the teen. She wasn't one to read much but this book was beginning to get fascinating. The Drykas particularly liked the drawings of the various ingredients needed. She had wonders why this book was so thick when all it suppose to contain is information of basic medicines. Definitely more extensive than previous thought.

Before she was just skimming through the book but now Faryon slowed down and read it word for word, absorbing the information like a sponge. Whenever she came across an interesting entry she would copy it into her new journal. As the teen wrote, she decided when it cleared up some, her and Kachal would go out and do a bit of field journaling.

Another entry caught her eye and like the precious one Faryon haven't heard of this one.

"Blumea poultice: A fragrant paste made from the leaves and roots of the Blumea plant.
Found in tropical and sub tropical regions. The fruits are highly popular to use as well.
Uses: If mixed with cold water and made into a compress can relive fevers due to colds if applies to the back of the neck. If mixed with hot water and made into a compress can help relieve pain in joints, can be directly applied to body parts as well. Has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties as well so can be used on various cuts and wounds."

Faryon made a mental note to catalog what she has in her apothecary chest exactly. Her mother had told her when she gave it to Faryon for her 8th birthday but only had used the more common herbs and plants out of it.

It was still raining but it had let up enough for her to travel back to the barns to get started on mucking out stalls and brushing down the horses. Faryon decided to copy one more entry randomly from the book and came across Mugwort oil.

"Mugwort Oil: An oil made from mugwort leaves, common wildflowers and diluted alcohol. Common throughout Mizahar this yellow wild flower has a smell similar to the herb Rosemary.
Uses: Rubbed liberally on the skin, it works as an insect repellant. Sprinkled in gardens to reduce the number of parasite that would otherwise ravage it."

Faryon finished up the last little bit and waited until it dried enough before closing the journal. She thought she had done a decent amount of research and was proud of herself. Getting up from the desk, Faryon stretched hearing a slight pop emit from her lower back. She returned the books back were they belonged then the teen rushed out of the on site library and to the barns to start working.
