[The Bronze Woods] Tricks and Traps

As Nate trudged his way past the pond, his blood ran cold. No cattails. It wasn't the same pond. Which meant he was lost. Oh so very lost. Which way to Syliras? He didn't know. It had always been his sisters that were good at navigation, they teased he could get lost turning in a circle. Hey, circles were hard, OK? Besides, you get dizzy turning in circles. Not a fair test.

Anyway, he needed to find something to lead him home. Fortunately, he wasn't too far from Syliras, he was quite sure. He'd been mostly traveling parallel to the tree-line, so he wasn't going deeper into the forest so much as traveling along it. If he could find that first pond again, Nate was sure he could work his way back home from there, but he had no idea how to get there. Ooooh, this was bad. This was quite bad. No idea where he was, no pelt to bring home, and to top it all off he was getting hungry. Eating weeds and pollen wasn't exactly the makings of a good meal.

As Nate continued to wander, his ears picked up the gurgling of running water. Good! Running water was good. Running water always ran downhill, if he could find this stream he should be able to follow it out of the woods. Once outside he could then follow the treeline toward Syliras... assuming he was following it toward the citadel city and not away from it. Which knowing his luck, he probably would be.

Nonetheless, Nate followed his ears, and soon discovered the gurgling brook that had generated the sound he'd been hearing. The water danced and jumped over small rocks and gullies but the stream itself seemed fairly small, barely ten feet across. Nonetheless it was moving right-to-left at a fairly decent clip, and so Nate followed it downstream to see where it would lead.

As he followed the stream, Nate noticed that it seemed to be getting wider, and after about thirty chimes the "stream" had joined a few other streams that had flowed from different parts of the forest to form a much bigger flow of water. Not quite a river, but certainly not a stream anymore. Nate shrugged; this was good, right? Meant he was getting closer to the tree line.

Following the water a bit further down, Nate paused abruptly as he saw something he did not want to see. Rapids. Rapids that had what looked to be sharp stones and large sticks lying about, and the water foamed as it wound its way back and forth between them in a zig-zag pattern. It fortunately was not a waterfall, or Nate would have had to scream at Lhex for his twisted humor, but nonetheless the rapids posed a problem.

Did he try to climb down? Or did he try to go around? Going around was certainly the safer option, but also much, much slower. And he didn't even know if he could find his way back from wherever "around" would take him. So he got on his hands and knees, turned around, and backed his way down the small ledge.

It was a dangerous thing, what he was doing, and Nate was well-aware the slightest slip would have him tumbling down headfirst into the foamy water, where he would likely bash his head against one of the many rocks underneath and either get some very nasty cuts he couldn't treat other than to bandage and hope for the best, or else bash his skull open and just flat-out die. His heart began beating quickly, as he clambered down, and the gravel shifted beneath his feet.

He took another step forward and the entire rock beneath him slipped as it slid across the rock underneath it, the two were not connected as the running water had made it slick and Nate found himself struggling to stay upright, arms circling as he fell backward, feeling a sharp pain in his left arm as it fell onto some rocks and tore open the skin. Swearing, Nate lay on the cold stones for a few ticks, just absorbing what a huge mistake he'd made. He was not Lea, he had no idea how to climb. Instead of saving time, he'd injured himself. Lovely. This was just the best day.

[The Bronze Woods] Tricks and Traps

Fortunately his injuries weren't too bad. Nathan snorted. It was a sad day indeed when not being too badly injured was the highlight of his day. The sharp rocks could have gouged deep wounds into his arm, but he'd been fortunate, and had only received light scratches. Sure they bled a lot, but surface wounds tended to do that, and after careful inspection Nate concluded he didn't even need to bandage these wounds. So long as he was careful not to get infectants like dirt into them, they should be fine. Still, he removed his secondary water pouch and poured a little alcohol onto the injuries, hissing a bit from the sting. Best to be safe, after all.

Well, he couldn't really climb back up, now, Nate realized. If he tried he risked even more injury, and frankly if he was going to get injured either way he'd rather get injured climbing down rather than up. Steeling himself, he once again clambered to his arms and knees and shuffled his way forward, testing his footholds this time to make sure they didn't shift beneath him before putting his weight on it. He moved very slowly this time, taking a tick every ten chimes or so to just pause and take a breath. The slow going meant after two bells he had just crossed the rapids. It was unclear whether he'd actually saved any time at all. But at least he was on the other side.

"The other side" in this case was a continuation of the running water, which seemed to turn slightly to the left. Following it, Nate realized the aching in his arm meant the wasn't likely to be able to pull the bow until they healed, which he estimated would take about two or three days. They weren't serious, but they smarted, and the shock of pain from pulling the string would simply throw his aim too much. Petch! This day was seriously shyke.

But finally, Nate saw what he'd been hoping to see, as the broad fields of Syliras slowly came into view. The city was visible, far in the distance, but Nathaniel could never mistake those gray walls, those towers and crenelations and powerful stone. It was, perhaps, the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen. But still, Nate felt a sense of intense disappointment. What had he even managed to achieve today?

Nate decided to simply follow the tree line rather than cutting across the field. At least he knew if he followed the trees with Syliras in sight, he'd eventually hit the small path he'd taken to get to the Bronze Woods. In any event, it was safer than taking an unknown route, especially given his skill with navigation. He'd had enough bad luck today, he didn't need more.

As he strolled, Nate couldn't help but notice another rabbit run from the semi-circular patches of grazed grass, and the faintest whiff of rabbit droppings. But without the ability to draw his bow, Nate didn't know if he'd even be able to catch any rabbits, and he was about to move on when his foot nearly fell into what looked to be a pit. Jumping back slightly, Nate bent down and peered at the curiously dug hole.

It was a pit approximately ten or twelve feet deep, and around a foot and a half in diameter. It had been covered in leaves and dirt, which was why Nate's foot had nearly gone inside, but shifting the covering, Nate realized what this was. A pit trap. Someone had constructed a pit trap for rabbits. And there was something inside this pit trap, which was also why enough of the covering had been disturbed that Nate noticed it before his foot had fallen in.

The pit trap was very simply built, just a hole covered up with twigs and leaves. He suspected its efficacy was mainly in where the pit trap was. If he was right, whoever made this trap had placed it where he'd seen the rabbits graze. It did seem like rabbits as a rule were creatures of habit; once they chose a grazing path they rarely deviated from it, making pit traps like this quite effective.

And then Nate realized he had an opportunity. He could take the rabbit he saw inside the pit trap for his own, leaving it empty for whatever unfortunate trapper dug the pit. It would be rather cruel to do so, but in the wilds, that was sometimes the risk you took when you trapped rather than hunted. Sometimes it wasn't even humans that poached the kill; he'd seen foxes, wolves, and large cats steal from traps as well. But someone had made this trap, and Nate was loathe to steal from it. If it had been his trap...

In the end it was his growling stomach that made the decision. Nate felt sorry for whoever dug the pit trap, but in the end, he and his sisters needed to eat. Whispering a silent apology to the other hunter, he grabbed the rabbit inside by the ears, lifted it up, and drawing his kukri from his belt, he gave it a sharp rap against the back of its neck with the blunt end of his weapon, killing it instantly. Quietly slipping the rabbit into his backpack, Nate continued to walk home, guilt warring with anger in his stomach.

Only one rabbit to show for an entire day, and he hadn't even caught it himself. Still, he had remembered how that pit trap was constructed. Perhaps he could make some of his own. At the very least, he needed to try. With a groan at his protesting left arm, Nate reached into his rucksack and pulled out a small section of cloth, using it to bandage the arm after another stinging soak in alcohol. Glaring up at the sun, Nate made a resolution to see if he couldn't dig some pit traps himself.

But, he would have to do it tomorrow.

Notes :
Solid solo, as always, Nathan. :)

Just a note, Lhex and Tanroa are very powerful and secretive gods so information about them should not be widespread. Nathan shouldn't know about them unless he has the proper lores, just keep in mind in your future threads. :)
