A city floating in the center of a lake, Ravok is a place of dark beauty, romance and culture. Behind it all though is the presence of Rhysol, God of Evil and Betrayal. The city is controlled by The Black Sun, a religious organization devoted to Rhysol. [Lore]

Teach me! (Vanari)

Postby Valerius Nitrozian on November 15th, 2013, 10:12 am

As Vanari told him that he made the whole business of teaching quite enjoyable, Valerius inclined his head and gave her the briefest hint of a smile, even though he had not expected anything but a compliment from her. „Let us continue“, he agreed as he was eager to learn more. During the course of their lesson Vanari would find that, while Valerius‘ pronounciation continued to be quite good, and he had little problem remembering the vocabulary or the rules of Vani grammar, not coming across as boastful seemed to be a bit of a problem for him.

Valerius had been spoiled all his life. All his life he had been told how much better he was than the common citizens of Ravok or the few foreigners that lived in the city. He didn’t see anything wrong with boasting about his family’s wealth and influence. He was better than the others, so why not make them aware of it? In time he agreed to tone it down somewhat though. Valerius Nitrozian was arrogant and vain, sometimes too much for his own good, but he also possessed a genuine thirst for knowledge. In another life he might have become a professor rather than experiment on Kelvic and order slaves around.

„I wouldn’t mind a break, Miss Ari“, he told her. As much as he had enjoyed studying with her, he felt a little mentally exhausted. He poured himself a cup of tea and drank from it while he thought about what he had learned so far. It had indeed been a most productive afternoon. „I hope that you will be willing to work with me for the near future though. It has been a while since I’ve learned a foreign language. I have to admit, I missed the experience.“

He set his cup down again and looked at her. It seemed to him as if she were waiting for something, as if she were excited about something, but about what? „When would you like to visit the Temple with me, Miss Ari?“ he finally asked her. „I can take you there this evening or tomorrow, after I have finished my work at the Kelvic Research Institution. The choice is entirely yours.“ As he said that he wondered if he should try and convert her to Rhysol in order to gain his god’s favour or let her be, in order not to endanger the pleasant student-teacher-relationship they currently seemed to be having.

Teach me! (Vanari)

Postby Vanari on November 15th, 2013, 6:41 pm

"Certainly," Vanari beamed, at once glad and relieved she had earned the noble's approval as a teacher. "It would be my pleasure to work with you again in the future, Mister Nitrozian."

She watched in anticipation as he sipped his tea with flawless motion--not a finger, elbow, or drop of tea out of place--and set back down his delicate cup with a neat little clink. It was rather fascinating, seeing one of the nobility in action, up close and personal. Sometimes, in her bountiful spare time, she would skirt the edges of the Noble District and observe pairs or gaggles of the rich and powerful walk by, chatting and swishing the fine fabrics of their attires with idle ease.

Certainly, the Vanthas had a grace and sophistication of their own; they worked hard after all under Morwen's loving rule to thrive as a civilization in spite of their conditions. It was an act of honoring their goddess, the way they persisted in advancing their arts and culture while battling the endless cold of Taldera. Through their efforts, Morwen's favor shined, and that was enough motivation for any--well, most--Vanthas to live with grace.

But, theirs was a product of efficiency, ingenuity, and necessity--the airs and manners with which Valerius Nitrozian bore himself were something entirely different. The rules by which the nobility lived were more nuanced, more intricate, like a clever song and dance. Difficult to master, yet intoxicating once you learned how to move in and amongst others of equal footing. There was a finesse to it that the Vantha admired from afar. She wasn't quite sure if she would ever try--or want--to reach it, but for now she was content with seeing it sparkle in the distance.

"Ah, I would indeed! Perhaps tomorrow would be better, I am a little wary of traveling during the night and may have some business to attend to this evening."

A few chimes and polite exchanges later, their next meeting was set and Vanari escorted kindly to the gates. The guards offered her a carriage, but she simply smiled and shook her head, insisting she preferred to walk. She had a special friend to visit tonight, and it just wouldn't do if Ria caught her stepping out of fancy carriage without demanding some explanations. The illusionist was spiteful at best of the Stryfe; Vanari tried not to think too deeply on what Ria would do if she found out the Vantha was actually attending mass tomorrow in Rhysol's own temple.

Yes, definitely better to walk this time around.

Notes

Just a comment Vanari: with the Vantha eyes, since every Vantha has a different color 'set', it's not really an open book unless you've memorized a person's colors. While they may be able to see the changes, and assume the general emotion from the color, it's rarely that obvious... for example, with Vanari, orange means excitement/happiness. However, for my own Vantha... orange is anger :)

Also, for your way of getting into holds... technically the only way IS intermarriage. Outsiders, on occasion, might be accepted into a hold... but that's a rare occasion. Mostly Vantha marry outside of their hold, the women moving in with their husbands. Avanthal's a complicated place... XD

Oh... and Avanthal does have a tavern and an inn... the Red Diamond Tavern, and the Savintar Warrens... but yes, mostly Arvintas...

Otherwise, I like how Val simply didn't understand the basically nice nature of Avanthal... what do they do during the winter? Stories of course!

...I don't think the Vantha fight Winter, really. They worship the goddess of that season, and really... they practically love it. Sure it can be annoying and dangerous at times, but I don't think they really fight against it...

And don't forget the Icewatch! They're a lot like the Ebonstryfe! Except the giant polar bears... yea... those... :D

...I sort of doubt that Valerius would have been able to understand (and repeat) such a complicated sentence in Vani, after only learning a few words. I mean, he shouldn't have been able to understand what Vanari was even saying, when she was pretending to be a guard.

Otherwise, a nice thread! There wasn't too much Vani learning involved in a lot of it, but you earned the language Valerius! Though... barely. If there hadn't been that bit at the end glazing over the learning, I might have been a bit more hesitant about awarding it... really, only a few words and statements were mentioned... but you got it in the end ^-^
