Painting The Bracelet

Time stamp 81 Fall 513

Taylani sits outside the Windchaser pavilion, on a little blanket to protect her clothing from the wet grass. The others of the pavilion who were not quite so hobbled as she was, her ankle mostly healed but still sore to walk for too long on, were preparing for the first move in a few days. The storms have passed, atleast the weather related ones, and the storms within this pavilion seem to have lessened in fury for now. She and Fallan were still ..exploring the new facet of their relationship, and it was confusing enough for her that she struggled with the idea of anything turning out for the better. However, in these early hours of dawn her mind was most clear. The light was building in the east, and the boy who had ran to fetch her some paints from the market returned with her change. She let him keep a copper miza for his trouble.

She hadn't bought much, there were no unusual colors or rare, simply three different colored powders of red blue and yellow. A pound each, should last her a long while and she will be able to decorate her jewelry pieces for a while on these. She had borrowed the leather beakers that Fallan had used the first night to serve her the foul tasting wine -something she has vowed not to do again. Alcohol and her apparently were not friends- and had carefully poured just a little water in each. In the first beaker she pinched a little of the red powder, then used the tiny detail paintbrush that the Drykas boy had also fetched for her to stir. She was careful not to add too much at a time, she did not want to over use the powders and make the paint too thick, and she could always add more. When she got the right consistency she set that beaker down.

Beside her is the ruined dress she had been captured in, and in the manner of the Drykas she was re-purposing it and not letting it go to waste. She wiped the paint brush clean of the red paint, meticulously wiped the bristles so that when she mixed both the yellow and the blue they would not be tainted by the red.

ReceiptPaints common are 2sm-1gm lb. I figure that red is the most difficult dye to create, so I assume that the paint would be the same, if my figures are wrong feel free to let me know.
8 SM - 1 lb red paint powder
4 SM- 1 lb Yellow Paint powder
4 SM- 1 lb Blue paint powder
5 Sm - 1 fine detail paint brush.
1 CM - Tip for Drykas boy.

Painting The Bracelet

Once the blue and yellow were mixed carefully Taylani lines the beakers filled with paint up in front of her. Next she pulls the jewelers kit from behind her, opens and rummages in it for a little bit. Various projects that were either finished and ready for Fallan to sell with his trading experience or partially finished waiting on her to get inspired. She was looking for one particular project, and there she found it. The smooth, polished bone bracelet she had made just a day or so before her run. Its surface was etched by her hand, in a series of lines and dots that reflected the riotous emotions she was feeling at the time.

This bracelet would go to this child that she now carries, be it boy or girl. A girl would be gifted for wearing, a boy gifted to give to a special girl or simply to just keep with him. She knew she could not keep the nature of her being in Endrykas a secret from them, but she did not want them to realize just how they had been conceived. However she knew that it might come up, someone might say something and she wanted something that she could give them. To know that no matter the circumstances of their conception, he or she was loved.

Picking up the tiny paintbrush, its bristles so smooth and coming to a point, perfect for those miniscule details, Taylani first dips the end into the red. Very carefully she presses the brush into the first slash. She was going to make the diagonal marks red, for they represented her anger and rage, and what color best interprets that? Red. Slowly she strokes the paint downward, occasionally using her finger to wipe excess red that spilled from inside the grooves.

Her hands shook occasionally in her effort to control the small brush, but fortunately with the bristles being so small a little shaking was not going to ruin the effect. Despite this, before she finished even half the slanted lines her fingers were stained red from corrections.

Already she was starting to grow attached to this child, she didn't think there was anything dangerous in that though she was surprised by how quickly it had happened. She could only just barely tell there was a difference in her body, and that only because she knew her body so well. Yet there it was, which made her wonder just briefly if Fallan had known that would happen when he had struck the original bargain of two children for a trip to Syliras.

That didn't matter now though, so she pushed the thought aside and sat the bracelet down on the blanket careful not to smudge the went paint. She then reaches her arm over to her ruined dress, now stained with bright colored paint and carefully cleans the brush off again. She also tried to wipe her fingers clean as well, smearing the red paint across the fabric.

Once done, she picks the bracelet back up, and dips her brush into the yellow paint this time. This color was reserved for the horizontal slashes that intersect with the now-red diagonal slash. She hoped to mimic the hot fires that had burned in her heart and belly with the rage and torment of her early captivity. She hoped to leave all that onto this bracelet, for she did not want even a shadow of that to be within her as she tried to raise this child.

Once more her tongue darts from between her lips as she carefully drags the brush through the deeply etched lines. Her blue eyes squinting from the strain of looking at the bracelet so closely but she wasn't going to stop until she had it finished.

The yellow seemed to go better with the reds, but something she noticed, the yellow wasn't as contrasting with the white of the bracelet bone. It blended too much, so she experimentally dipped the brush back in the red pigment and tried to add just a little red. Surprising, to Taylani anyway, that created an orangey pigment. That was better, and interesting to learn, mixing red and yellow gave an orange color. She mentally decided that she would have to experiment with that a little bit.

She set the bracelet down again, and eyed it as she picked up her soiled dress once more. Wiping the brush once more, she critically views how the orange and the red work together. If she could have used the yellow it would have been more effective, but the orange was ok. She might look into stains at some point.

Once the brush was clean enough she plucks the bracelet back up, and this time dips the tip of the brush in blue. The blue represented the peace after the storm, literally. While not exactly happiness, it was a peace and one that she treasured. For now, instead of self-loathing and recriminations, instead of anger and hatred, she now felt just a sense of acceptance. This was her new life, and now there was no way of getting her old one back. To try would just endanger her child, physically and mentally for she did not want him or her raised to think that humans can be bought and sold.

With the blue pigment she dabs the paint into the tiny circular holes that she had made along the top and bottom of the bracelet. The color flowed easily into the dots, and she loved the color of blue. It was almost the exact same shade as her eyes, just slightly darker but not by much. It also just spoke of serenity which is what she was going for. If she still felt flashes of sorrow, of anger she pressed them down, better the tranquil acceptance then the life lived in hardened anger. Besides, Fallan and she...had come to some sort of understanding. It was one that she was beginning to like.

She didn't understand it, but he had given her the choice to stay or to leave. To remove herself from his bedroll or not. That made all the difference, at least to Taylani. She was still a kept woman, she wasn't sure how Fallan really felt but he did seem to want to keep her. For now, considering she didn't have many options that was enough for Taylani. She didn't know how she felt about him, she knew how she should feel and knew she didn't hate him. She didn't abhor him, even though he had done so much to her. Yet he had always kept her safe, and he did do things to make her happy.

She thought it was too complicated to sort out in one painting session. She finished the blue and put down the brush. The bracelet was fully done now. It was a bit gaudy in her opinion to be properly pretty. But it seemed to fit in the Drykas fashion of being overly colorful. Smiling she set it aside to dry and then set about cleaning up her brushes and the beakers. When she was finished her former dress was as ruined and in a disarray as her former life, but that was okay because both could be set aside.

Notes :
I gave you the Philtering point for the detail you put into mixing the paints - you could have easily just thrown some stuff together, but you were very nicely detailed about it instead. Overall, nice little thread and continuing exploration of Taylani's feelings on her situation. Well done!
