Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

The roar of the crowd erupted from the stands as the warrior hit the ground with his defeat splattered around on the floor he lay on and marks of dishonour blazoned across his chest in a great slashing design. The victor raised a bloody longsword above his head and was responded by more cheering from the crowd. It had truly been a masterful spectacle to watch, the skill and precision of swordsman as he disarmed the convicted murderer, the jeers from the crowd as he scrambled on the floor trying to flee from judgement even resorting to begging before the blade had silence him. His body was silently being dragged off as the swordsman continued to feast on the admiration from the crowd but by then Davus had already sulked off, the excitement of battle was over and he had no love glory seekers. But even some part of him had been impressed by his mastery of the sword, the way he controlled the blade with such fluidity and finesse, almost like a dancer seemed to spark something within him. "Then again" He reminded himself "That bastard did just cost me three silvers", he thought a murderer capable of taking down two Akalaks would have lasted at least five chimes but no; the fight was over even quicker than the trial that man probably received. The loss of his money continued to occupy his thoughts as he made his way back to the Kulkukan inn, which no doubt would be full of patrons discussing the fight.

"Pay up" His backside had hardly touched the seat before the words spilt from Nystir's lips "Three silvers, and don't pretend you don't have the money on you because your room is just upstairs.
"Fine"
He said through clenched teeth "Take your bloody sliver" He slammed the three coins down onto the countertop "Now get me a drink already!"
"Someone is a sore loser, you should never bet what you can't stand to lose" He said curtly as he pushed the tankard away and the silver coins towards him "I still can't believe you thought that pathetic bit human scum was even going to last five chimes against an Akalak"
Ignoring the jibe at humans Davus replied "He took down two of your kind so I assumed he would be a better fighter then that, of course he might have been if he was actually given some decent armour and weapons not just some rags and a sword so rusted I thought if he had actually got a hit in it would have disintegrated or were your fellow Akalaks scared he might actually win?"
"By Wysar keep comments like that to yourself!" He exclaimed as he looked around to see if anyone had heard but fortunately the rabble of tavern meant no-one had "Remember that bastard killed two Akalak's and while it may have escaped your attention you are currently in a city with nearly five thousand of them, I know you think you can handle yourself in a fight and I faith that in a brawl you could come out of it the victor, but you don't want a reputation of a Akalak hater in this city" He warned, placing emphasis on the five thousand.

Silence hung between them as Davus set about emptying his tankard while Nystir filled other patrons' up before the Svefra asked tentatively "You Akalaks are quite aggressive, aren't you"
"Aggressive? This coming from the man whose race means that any imports that come by sea, has to come from a ship crewed by Svefra or it has to have paid homage to their main god. We are not aggressive; we just value strength and discipline. Most of us train from the day we are born to fight, there are too few of us left so all so those who remain can't afford to be weak."
"You train from birth?"
He said with a raised eyebrow "Who teaches you?"
"Varies I suppose"
He answered scratching his chin as he contemplated the answer "Generally the child in question will either be sent to a trainer or be tutored by his parents depending on their profession, then if he completes Rite of Trial at around fifteen he can choose any profession he wishes and there is nearly always an Akalak to train him, well here in Riverfall of course"
"And what if say, a human wanted to learn the art of combat? Who would they approach?"
He asked nonchalantly
"Well there a number of trainers that would happily train a human but I suppose I would recommend Soryn Vohlkhul for you"
" Soryn Vohlkhul"
He repeated "What's he like?
"Well... Very blunt, aggressive, traditional. He also is quite dismissive of other races except for Svefra weirdly"

"Weirdly? What do you mean by that?" He asked defensively
"No, no I don't mean it like that. Well I sort of do, you have to admit you are a weird bunch it just that it is strange he is not fond of other humans but likes your lot. He did spend quite a lot of his youth exploring the Suvan Sea, no doubt with some of your ancestors"
"Where can I find him?"
"Erm, I think he owns one of the apartments on the Kuahala Estate"
Davus downed the last of his ale and left quickly without saying goodbye "Tells him Nystir sent you" He called out as Davus slammed the tavern door.

Stick 'em with the pointy end

Davus knocked sharply of the heavy wooden door and stood back awaiting an answer. The apartment itself was nothing extravagant, fairly large but other than that it was an unremarkable abode. "Well who in the gods' names is that?" A voice shouted from within as heavy footsteps approached the doorway and a strong hand swung it open. "What by all that is holy do you want?" A voice erupted from the door way as a figure blocked the light attempting to enter through the opened door. Whatever Davus had imagined Soryn Vohlkhul to look like the truth was far more impressive, he stood over half a foot taller than Davus with broad shoulders, large biceps and a solid chest he had all usual imposing features of an Akalak with the addition of a multitude of scars sprawled across his face and body and a scowl that reminded him of a old mountain goat or a scarred bull. "Well spit it out boy? What do you want with me?" He barked at the Svefra.
"N-Nystir sent me" He stammered ever so slightly when confronted, rubbing his bandaged eye "I want to learn how to use a sword"
The grizzled warrior merely grunted as he examined Davus "Blue eyes, tall for a human, Oceanus mark on the neck and I am guessing that gull perched on that wall is your tavan?" Davus merely nodded and whistled for bird to come over "I don't need proof boy, I know a child of the sea when see one" He gestured for Davus to follow.
"I think you are mixing us up with an Otani or a Charoda" He muttered as he followed Soryn into his apartment with his tavan now standing upon his shoulder
"Am I boy? What do they now about the sea when they dwell below it?" He asked rhetorically "Nothing of course! No, only those who brave it's wrath on the surface are truly it's children" Davus did not favour this comment with a reply as he examined the apartment, it was mostly bare favouring practicality over comfort though with a fireplace that was probably lit when the winter winds blew in and a comfy bed for an old back that slept in it. A few trophies also adorned the walls, various teeth and claws as well as an ancient map and a human skull with suspiciously sharp teeth "Over here boy, we aren't going to start sparring in my house" He summoned him toward the balcony that looked out onto the glistening, sapphire water that filled the Suvan Sea.

It was a large balcony as it was a specific request of Soryn when he commissioned the home, it held a large ring filled with sand to be used as a sparring area with racks of weapons and armour scattered around the edge of the balcony "Did Nystir tell you about my rates?"
Davus shook his head "Uhh, no I suppose I assumed they would be free"
"Well you were wrong, that is something I suspect you will have to get used to in our future sessions, it's one Miza for each lesson but since I am kind this first on is one the house."
Davus didn't haggle over the price, you don't haggle with a man who could throw over the edge of a cliff like a pebble.

Soryn ran his fingers across the hilt of a rack containing swords before pulling one out a longsword, he wielded it with ease in one hand though he suspected an average man would need two hands to wield it and hope to use it properly. Most likely made of steel it shone in autumn sun as Soryn spun it around his figure "Is this the sort of sword you would hope to be using?" He asked
"Well ye-"
"Wrong! Do you think you are some knight of Syliras? Or perhaps some wandering hero who would save a fair maiden? You are a Svefra, a sailor and a drunk to boot. You don't use the weapons of warriors' boy, you use the weapons of pirates and rogues."
He pulled out an ugly, blackened weapon from a rack and chucked it to him, the blade landed in front of him, spraying sand all over his feet "Next time you will catch it, now" He gesture towards the assortment of shields that decorated the stone wall "Which shield do you want?"
He pointed at a plain wooded one, thinking it was a trick question "Well that small woode-"
"Wrong again!"
He interrupted "That is an offensive weapon boy, designed to do as much damage as possible as quickly as possible"
"But that would leave you vulnerable"
"No it leaves you unencumbered by a heavy shield, it makes boarding as ship easier, it makes you more agile and quicker and most importantly it leaves you hand free for another weapon. Look at yourself boy, dirty clothes, missing or damaged eye, scarred knuckles and a more often than not found in a tavern. You a brawler through and through lad, you need that hand free to be as adaptable as possible. Now do you know what the first rule of swordplay with a cutlass is?"

Davus shrugged "Stick 'em with the pointy end?"
"Wrong again! Don't try to be clever with me boy, or at all for that matter it doesn't suit you, you thrust with a sword to penetrate armour and no-one is wearing amour aboard as ship because if they fall of they will sink. Now pick up that blade and tell me what you see."
Davus bent over and picked up the cutlass, running the edge of the cold iron blade against his fingers.
"It's blunt" He said plainly
"That's obvious, I'm sure as Hai not giving you a sharp one to train with. What else?"
He swung it slowly in his hands "Gotta lot of nicks and scratches on it. It's heavy, weighted almost. And the blade is slightly curved, and pretty short as well"
"Good, we might make a swordsman out of you yet. You got most of the basics"
He pulled out another similar looking sword, though judging by the blade it had never been used it combat "That specifically is a naval cutlass, cousin to this fine example of a cavalry cutlass" He held it aloft to show the quality "Though you will notice that your blade is both shorter and heavier. There are two reasons for this, firstly that cutlass is used for close quarter combat aboard ships and must not hinder boarders as they climb aboard another ship, secondly it is heavy to provide more momentum when you slash it, you find when you have a force of a galloping horse you won't need as much weight"

"Okay so when do we start sparring?" Davus asked eagerly
"Not now that is for sure, we are done for today. Tomorrow you will arrive at the 7th bell sharp, washed and sober; I will not tolerate drunks within my lessons and you will remember what we have discussed today. Do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal"
"Good, now you know the way out, shut the door when you do so"

"Wider apart, a shoulder width" A voice barked out
"There are wide enough apart" Another voiced complained followed by metal striking each other and a muffled grunt
"See, too close together. If we were using sharpened weapons you would have just lost your left arm boy"
"Fine, you happy now"
He grumbled followed by two successive strikes before another muffle grunt
"No, you just lost your head. Your back foot needs to be lighter, you aren't trying to stop attack but just deflect it, stop trying to put the force on your back foot because it just means you can't block the next attack" The deeper voice explained,

The sun had just risen from the horizon, lighting up the white apartments that sat on of the cliffs of Riverfall. The sky was completely clear as the city started to wake up to a new day, warriors were sparring in the drill yards, the docks were flooded with workers decorating and setting up stalls for some event, and the beauties (and beasts) were busy pampering themselves for the approaching beautyfest. But these activities were of no concern to the two armed men who stood opposite each in a ring full of cool, grating sand. Despite the fresh temperature the Sverfra was starting drip with sweat in his light woollen clothes, while the bear like Akalak seemed completely comfortable in his studded leather armour.

"Look at you, you are already exhausted and the 8th bell hasn't even struck yet, I might have to get you to start running round the city if you are this unfit" Soryn complained.
"I am not unfit" Davus panted "I just have been comfortable in the city for the past fortnight"
"You mean you have been getting pissed every night and you have been sleeping in bed all day, well that ends now. Those Zith are excepted to past this place any day now and you need to be ready if you are going to go toe to toe with them"

"How did you know I had been summoned to fight"
"Resume stance"
He ordered as they started to clash blades again "Well every man able to fight can be asked to defend the city, keep you guard up!" Davus clench his teeth as the sword struck his chest "And since I still have some pull with the guards I volunteered for you to go"
"You did what!?"
He exclaimed, dropping his guard as the sword smacked his knee
"Never get distracted" Soyrn shouted as Davus cursed under his breath "Your enemy sure isn't going to make it easy for you and I won't either"
"You're the bloody reason two guards barged into the inn in the middle of the day and told me I had to fight for the city or be executed? I think I might need a drink"
He said exasperated as he blocked Soyrn's swing and pressed the attack.
"Good, keep pressing. You need to be relentless when you are fighting you enemy, and no more drinking; you are more aggressive when sober and the cutlass is all about aggression. I have seen skulls smashed open by the swing of a cutlass"

He parried Davus's thrust with ease and smacked him around the head with his sword "No thrusting remember!"
"That bloody hurts y'know, so do you think I should bring a cutlass when we leave?"
He inquired
"By the gods no" He shook his head vigorously "You know what you need to do? You want to go in there with a bag full of tricks, a couple of glass bottles, a rope as a belt to strangle someone, a dagger and maybe even some pepper to blind them with if they get too close. I may not be a brawler, but even I know that some men can use anything as a weapon and those are the men I fear most" He quickly unleashed a flurry of blows which quickly disarmed, struck and knock Davus down "A few words of warning about Zith from an old warrior" He held out his hand to pull the Svefra up "While you may be taller and heavier than them, they are going to be quick, vicious and very unpredictable. They have very sharp claws on both their hands and their feet and a little note man to man, no matter how attractive a female Zith looks don't try it. It is never going to end well"
Davus dusted himself off as he stood back up "So quick little buggers with sharp claws and a unpredictable nature" He paused to digest the information "What's the worst that could happen?"
"That's the spirit"
He exclaimed as he adjusted his grip on the sword and readied his stance "Now show me that grip of yours and then we will concluded today's lesson"

Davus stood like a silhouette in the door frame as he watched the clashing of steel on the balcony that stood out to sea, the men were enclosed in a ring of sand, bound to fight till disarmament. One warrior was bound in chainmail, his face was stern and concentrated, his dark green skin was dripping with sweat as he slashed his steel longsword at his opponent. His partner was bound in heavy plate armour, his face was completely obscured by a vicious looking great helmet but the heat of the sun no doubt meant that he was cooking in his armour, he wielded a monstrous great sword, swinging it in huge arcs. Both of them faced the same opponent, bound in no armour just a simple leather vest and cloth pants he dived in and out of the attacks, deflecting and parrying with speed, unlike his combatants he looked like he had just been out for a gentle stroll.

He caught site of Davus leaning in the doorway "Is it the seventh bell already? Well lets finish this then" He sidestepped a overhead swing from the greatsword. Slashing back with his own sword, it smacked right against his gauntlet, sending the greatsword clattering in to the sand "Pick up the sword and leave the ring" He barked at the warrior, before re-entering his combat stance facing towards the other combatant. He was on him in an instant; his chainmail weighed him down far less the plate mail, so he moved far quicker around the ring, circling the older fighter. Soryn tested his defence, swinging his sword round towards his torso, it was blocked sharply, the metal sung as he pulled his sword back, readying his defence again. Soryn swung again, this time with more force behind his own longsword as it was blocked, throwing his opponent of balance. He stepped quickly around him, swiping at his knee causing the warrior to double over in pain. Soryn stepped up the warrior and kicked the sword out his hand "You too, dismissed. You" He pointed at Davus "Step forwards"

Davus swerved out of the way of the warriors, he heard them muttered curses under their breath as they left the building. "That was incredible" He said truthfully, he suspected Soryn had been going easy on him in their sessions but he had no idea he was capable of fighting like that.
"That was nothing lad, armoured opponents are slow and cocky. They think that there are no weak points in armour and to most swordsmen there are only a few well guarded ones. Problem for them is when they are facing a lightly armoured opponent who knows where to strike, they are too quick for the armour and they tire far less easily. It is a dangerous dance though, and it is one I will teach you lad. Now, you need to be balanced lad that is very important with these types of blades so we are going to be using this" He picked up a dark wooden beam and rested across the ring. It was about five yards long and just wide enough to place a foot parallel with the beam. He chucked Davus his training sword whom caught it by the hilt "Good lad, now step on the beam" Davus did as he was told, stepping lightly onto the beam he assumed the basic combat stance "Pretty good, feet shoulder width apart, bent slightly at the knee. So let's see how balanced you are, note how I move my feet as I approach" Davus did just that, he took small steps, advancing with the front foot first before following with the back to balance his stance

"Now I am going to strike, you will parry and stay balanced on the beam. Is that clear"
"Yes"
"Good now, remember the basic parries"
He said before raising his own cutlass, Davus mimicked him, readying himself for the blows. Soryn started with a low strike, he lunged forward quickly as he slashed at Davus's hip. Davus bent his sword, "Parry one" he recalled "Like you have just drawn the sword from the scabbard", the blades clashed as he successfully parried the blow but he didn't anticipate the force as his back foot slipped from the beam and into the sand below "Nice parry lad but stay balanced, you'll find that one wrong step mean serious injury at the least. Step back on and resume your stance" Davus stepped back on as Soryn swiped again, this time aiming higher, forcing Davus to twist his wrist sharply, being mindful to not expose his wrist too much. This time the blade was simply deflected away from him, forcing Soryn to pull back sharply to avoid falling off "Nice, and again" he thrust the sword fast this time hoping to catch Davus off guard as the blade travelled towards his chest. Davus managed to raise his blade fast enough to deflect the blow but didn't have enough time to prepare for the force as he felt both his feet slip off the beam, his hands grab hopelessly at the air his back smacked against the sandy floor, knocking the wind out of him as he groaned in pain.
"You said..." He spluttered weakly "That you don't thrust a cutlass"
"No lad" He said with a smile "You don't thrust with a cutlass, you have yet to become precise with this weapon. I on the other hand" He jumped off the beam and pressed the sword up against chest "Can thrust to my heart's content. No get back on that beam, we still have a lot more to get through"

Davus jogged across the balcony, his bare feet scrapping across the white, stone floor. His breathing was laboured and his tanned face had turned a bright red, his light clothing stuck to his body, glued together by the layer of sweat that covered his body. It was a cool morning, the clear sky let the heat of the morning sun simply vanished though that seemed to provide little consolation to the huffing Svefra. "So what did the boy say next Davus" the voice came from Soryn who leant back on a wooden bench with one leg resting on the other, his arm hooked around the bench and a half empty wineskin clasped in his free hand. He looked like he was simply admiring the view of the rising sun, the spotless clear skies, and the shimmering sapphire sea. Davus was not enjoying the morning, in fact he was rather hating it as he replied, his throat burning with every dry, croaky word spoken "Then he said he and I would dance with the Zith, making the ground wet with their blood"
Soryn roared with laughter, his deep throaty laugh seemed to echo in the crisp air "Dance with the Zith" He slapped his knee repeatedly as he tried to restrain his laughter "I do apologise on behalf on my kin, they do have a tendency to be quite serious about everything. That's part of the reason why I left to explore the Suvan Sea, your people are so carefree about anything"
"How long... did you spend... on it?"
Davus asked through deep breaths
"Ohh about..." He scratched his chin thoughtfully "At least fifty and two hundred years, I was actually gutted I was never marked by Laviku, it would have made quite a few events easier. Still..." He said pulling up his sleeves "At least I have these" he declared, proudly showing off his marks of Wysar. Davus replied by pulling back the neckline of his shirt, stopping as he did so to catch his breath, he revealed his Oceanus mark circling around his right shoulder in all its aquatic glory "There isn't a single day that goes by where I wish I wasn't marked by him" He proclaimed bitterly.
"Lad..." He spoke softly to him "I don't know what you have against a god, I can make a couple of guesses based on that one but I won't, but whatever it is you shouldn't hold a grudge like that."
"Like what?"
He said aggressively
"Like one that consumes you, your kind only lives a short while, you don't have the time to waste on something so damning. Your life is fleeting, don't waste it lad, find a woman and find some friends. Don't comfort yourself with anger"
"I think we are done talking"
He uttered curtly
"You are right about that, start running again" He ordered as Davus groaned "Start running or I start hitting" he threatened as Davus finally mustered up the effort to starting running again. His arms hung idly but his side and his legs out very little effort is as well, he wiped a drop of sweat that had been determined to run down his forehead.

"Lad, think fast" Soryn called out as Davus turned his head around, a flash of confusion across his face "What do yo-" His question was answered before it had finished when a large stone made its way into his gut. Davus doubled over immediately, what little air remained within him had been knocked out by the force of the thankfully smooth stone.
"What in the gods' names is your problem you mad old man?" He shouted at him as he stood up as straight as his body would allow him
"Start dodging lad" He chucked another rock, this time it smashed into Davus's shoulder who yelped out in pay but Soryn simply laughed "Learn from your mistakes, get out of the bloody way next time" Davus took heed of his advice and started to avoid the rocks "That's it lad" He called out as Davus ducked under a particularly nasty sharp rock "Move you feet as well, you have to be quick of mind and of feet if you want to stay alive longer than one chime in a fight"
"Why am I paying you to do this to me?" He said diving out of the way of another rock, though failing to roll after his dive so more rocks continued to hit him as he lay on the floor
"Get back up" He yelled "You are paying me to do this because I know what I am doing. You don't!" Davus jumped back onto his feet, his muscles ached, his bones ached, even his brain ached and Soryn could see this "Okay, I think that is enough for today. I'll see you later"
"Who says I am coming back?"
Davus moaned bitterly
"You'll be back, don't worry about that lad"

Davus wiped the sweat of his palms on his top before gripping the hilt again, the bucket guard shielding his hand from any damage. It belonged to a weathered old iron cutlass that should really have been melted down fights ago. He stood at opposite ends in the ring of sand to Soryn, who likewise was armed, though with a much better quality sword "Okay now listen carefully, we aren't trying to kill each other; otherwise you would be dead already. Just play it how you want, develop your own style. Have you got that?" He asked, Davus merely nodded "Remember I am simply going to match your skill, which is none" He stepped forward, assuming his stance as Davus mirrored him though a lot less naturally.

Davus decided to play it aggressively, stepping forwards almost immediately and swinging his cutlass at Soryn's torso. He deflected it almost instantaneously, before assuming his neutral stance again "Nice try lad, keep 'em coming" Davus obliged, swinging with more strength at his right thigh but once again was blocked, feeling the vibrating metal in his hands shake his bones "Remember lad, more force doesn't mean it will be any harder for me to st-" He was cut of mid-flow as Davus tried to take him by surprise as swung aimlessly at his torso but to no avail "Poorly armed with little thought for how I might respond, I can see it in your eyes what you are trying to do lad". Davus was starting get annoyed, he could feel his ears burning from humiliation and responded with more force as he lunged forward suddenly, slashing his cutlass furiously. Soryn simply stepped out of the way and stuck a foot out sending Davus sprawling into the sand.

"Get up lad, you are getting angry. There is a difference between being an aggressive fighter and just being plain angry; both get you killed but one a lot quicker than the other" Davus pulled himself up and brushed the sand off his trousers "Now get ready and this time keep calm" he ordered. Once again he raised his sword and entered his stance once more and Davus likewise did the same. Davus decided to hang back in the ring, trying to find a comfortable way to move around the ring in a still unfamiliar stance, Soryn responded by approaching him and testing his defence, Soryn knew he was trying a different style so decided to develop it. He swiped at his right hip, giving Davus plenty of time of parry it "Good lad, keep calm, wear your opponent down" he pulled back and circled around him in the ring "Take your time with your feet placement, you are looking quite awkward when you walk in stance". Davus did just that, with each step he carefully placed his feet, making sure he didn't trip over his own feet as he circled around the ring making sure he was always in front of him. Soryn struck in quick succession, the first strike directed at his torso which Davus managed to deflect and but the second hit his legs, though he made sure it was with the flat of his blade "Remember don't get cocky"

Soryn then charged at him, taking him by surprise as he swung his cutlass down, Davus just managed to block his strike but did notice and opportunity, as the blades made contact he swung his left fist into the warrior's stomach before he pulled back. Soryn to stepped back "Very good, see that is the benefit of keeping your hand free" he swung overhead again and this time Davus was ready, or so he thought. When he raised his cutlass he was confident but when the metal struck he cried out in pain, the force behind it was far greater than before and it shook his bones to the core "Stupid boy, the same trick rarely works twice" He sheathed his sword "I think we are done for today"
"Actually, we are done"
He said "At least for a long time"
"You're leaving then?"
Soryn asked, Davus merely nodded in reply "Well it has been a pleasure teaching you, now where is my money? It's four Mizas I believe" He said as Davus handed over the money begrudgingly "Now since it is the middle of the day, let's get pissed"
"Couldn't agree more Soryn"
He said as they chuckled together.
