Now that they had learned the basic maneuvers, Greco moved her into a pair of defensive techniques. The first one he called the two-handed upward flower. He stood before her and demonstrated, explaining that her hands needed to stay close together throughout the technique or it would not work properly.

Using a yin-yan grip in the center of the staff, he turned the staff towards his left shoulder first, directed it downwards towards his knee and calf, and then brought it back up. She noticed that his wrists had twisted slightly during this before moving into the opposite direction. The staff went past his right shoulder, down, and then back up, thus creating a flower. Throughout the demonstration, Vira paid close attention to how he positioned his arms, his feet, his shoulders and legs, how he held the staff and even how it angled.

After the various corrections he'd given already, she had observed that he often wanted her to keep the weapon relatively closer to her body, affording more protection. He completed it in slow motion a few more times before picking up the speed, speaking through it as he did so. "Make sure the staff swings close against your body, almost brushing your clothes. With time and practice, you'll be able to do this just as easily and as quickly. Now-" the staff stopped its swing. "Let me see you do it."

Nodding, Vira checked her hands and placed them in the yin-yan as he had held his with the fists right above the other. "Over the shoulder..." She murmured, rotating the weapon towards her left shoulder first, following it with her eyes. It rotated around towards her knee, her hands still holding tight. "-back up..." It twisted past and returned to an upright position and then continued over her right shoulder, following through to the knee and then back up again.

"Excellent." Greco said. "Now, faster."

The young Endal obeyed, swinging it over her right shoulder, past her knee, up, over left shoulder, past her knee, up, and again. He told her to go faster and she did, rotating the weapon with great concentration in the flower pattern. It was a relatively easy technique though from a glance it had seemed challenging. Her face had taken on a deep frown as she concentrated on keeping the rotation going at the pace he demanded of her.

"Faster, Lavira, faster!" Her called, clapping a beat with his own staff. She picked up the pace, over the shoulder, down, back up, over the next shoulder, down, back up, again past the original shoulder. "Come on, faster. Can you hear it whistling in your ears?" He picked the beat up, watching proudly as she spun the staff in the pattern until he could see the twitch of her muscles in her jaw as she focused.

She was really too tense and he now needed to break her focus to teach her relaxation so that she could better anticipate attacks without worrying about losing focus on the strikes she did. He slowed the pace for her until they were going slowly. With it, her face relaxed. "You are too tense. Relax, but keep the staff moving. Over, around, down, up, over, around, down, up. Follow me."

He took up the rhythm before her, following her moves like a mirror but keeping his face calm and smooth. "Tell me about your bird, Endal. What is your eagles name?"

"My Eagle?" She replied, her concentration breaking and making her falter in the flower move. Greco bobbed his head at her to keep up and she hastened to get back into sync, focusing there before trying to answer. "Mohya is her name, sir."

"How was your bonding? You do not look like your typical Endal." He remarked, smiling casually while he kept the pace.

"Maybe I'm not your typical Endal, sir. But our bonding was fine. It was..different...and yet better than I could have ever thought one could be." She was still struggling to keep the rhythm with him but slowly, she was getting the hang of it. She continued. "Mohya has never had a rider before and I was surprised beyond belief when she chose me. She was pretty emotionally scarred by the storm. A lot of us were." The flow of the staff faltered some and Vira fell silent in an effort to keep it steady.

The flower was not moving very quickly but she could see in his face that Greco wanted to increase the tempo. She braced herself only to close her eyes, trying to find the rhythm on her own instead. It was a challenge and his pushing of her made it even harder to concentrate. It was part of the difficulty in doing this sort of combat: Vira's lessened sight meant she had to focus more than usual in order to achieve success. It made her a beast in accuracy with the bow (though she still had a ways to go before she could compete on Kovac's level) but her speed was impossibly slow.

She continued rotating the weapon, first flowering it on one side, then on the other, picking up the tempo while she spoke. "Mohya lost a nest of hatchlings, though...she was so spiteful to people after it. Blamed us for abandoning them; I tried many times to help her see that there'd been nothing for us to do. They'd herded us away before we could even get near the young and flightless ones. How can she blame us for that?"

The weapon twirled impossibly fast now as she continued with her eyes closed. "I can't tell you the number of nights and even days when things were slow in the rest of the nests being used that I just sat and talked to her. She never talked back, though. Mohya was so sad and I didn't know how to help her. It's funny that it took the quake and my falling for her to wake up and see. She's a good bird, sir. A really good bird, and has shown such wisdom to me that I could never hope to achieve. I'm glad she chose me."

At last, the staff began to slow and Greco stepped back, smiling at her. Vira opened her eyes and took a breath as he spoke in return. "Now, we just need to get you to do that with your eyes open. But that kind of multi-tasking can come in time. Let's learn the next strike."

Greco went over with her several similar strike patterns, including the two handed downward flower (which was basically the same as the upward, but in reverse) and the one handed upward and downward flower. The moves, he continued to remind her of, were specifically for defending yourself against oncoming attacks and could lead a fighter into more complex moves such as combos and strikes she'd already learned.

What he wanted from Vira now was something slightly new. He called it the 'shuffle step'. The weapons master took an poke strike position with a yin-yan grip as usual; but instead of poke maneuver, he brought the staff back against his shoulders, shifting his lead foot to balance slightly on the balls of his feet before thrusting it forwards, giving the weapon a two-strike advantage. She took note of how the lead-arm brought the weapon right up against his lead shoulder, the staff perfectly parallel to the ground, before thrusting it forwards.

The teen nodded as she thought she understood what he wanted. Greco took a relaxed position and observed her. Vira held the staff for a poke technique, yin-yan grip and the tip about chest level. She moved slowly to make sure she had the move right into the next step. Her weight briefly pulled to the back leg (her left) as her front slipped back, then quickly returned to the front leg as she balanced on the ball of her feet. Simultaneously, the staff was brought back until it was perpendicular and level with her body, the weapon resting at the top of her right arms bicep. Her shoulders were bunched high, however, causing the staff to not sit against the chest in quite the proper place.

Greco stepped in immediately and pressed upon her shoulders, reminding her to keep them relaxed or she could be countered quickly and easily by a more proficient fighter. Vira nodded in understanding and went back to the beginning. She moved through the first two steps from setup to the first shuffle back of her foot and the staff. It was in that moment that she noticed what he had been talking about. Before he could demand his perfection, she forced her shoulders down and took a breath to calm herself into relaxation once more. Then, the teen followed through with the move and jabbed the weapon forwards, mentally reminding herself that it was positioned higher than a thrust was, more shoulder instead of chest level and without the duck head grip.

When she snapped the weapon forward, she stepped forward with the ball-balanced foot, too, so that it was a solid strike. Frowning some, Vira shifted back with a hop of her foot and re-did that particular move a few times until she was sure that it was right. "Okay, shoulders down, staff at chest level, balance on ball of front leg...Lemme do it one more time."

Without interfering, Greco let her go once more, glad to have a pupil willing to put the work into their interest. Vira reset into the poke, snapped her foot back slightly with weight balanced over the ball, and snapped the staff up and back so that it was shoulder-level and resting against her bicep. Then, Vira stepped forwards, snapping the staff out again into the clean finish that was demanded of her.

"Excellent, I think that'll do for today."

"Alright, thanks Greco, I really appreciate the time and patience."

"So long as you keep practicing, it won't be a problem. Come by in five days. If the weather's bad, we'll meet at the Fighting Pits. Plan for a spar in ten days. And go to market and get your own staff, hm? It will help your practice when we're not training."

"Sounds like a plan; thanks again." Vira returned the practice staff to its appropriate rack, then, and headed for the front of the training grounds, reaching out to Mohya in the process. Time to head back to Market!
