60th of Fall, 513 AV
Night

She dragged herself into her room, exhausted. The market had been tiring, even for her, and she wanted to just fall on the bed and sleep until morning. However, one look to the crate that was on the top of her table made her change her mind. She needed to build something similar to a nest with the crate she had bought and transfer the egg to it before the next morning, not only because she needed to return Virat's crate to him, but also because she didn't want to damage the egg only because she was tired and didn't want to make anything right then.

Sighing, Syveris dropped what she had bought on top of her bed, taking the white vinati and bryda Azira had chosen for her and folding them carefully, before storing the clothes on her chest. They were beautiful, she had to admit. She only hoped they would fit her well enough, so she wouldn't look up completely out of place in the clothes. The Avora thought about the huntress for a moment, remembering her shameful behavior years ago. Well, at least they got along pretty well on the market.

Then, she picked up the book from the top of the table. Raising a Falcon from the Egg. It was quite thick, and from what Virat had told her it was well detailed, with almost everything she needed to know. The book didn't focus on training raptors, but she could always deal with it later, when she actually would have to. She had already read a bit, to try to understand how she should care for the egg. Virat had actually told her why he wanted her to take falconry lessons, and had asked that she familiarized herself on how to raise it. The Avora knew he wanted to make a surprise until the day of her birthday, when he would give her the egg, but she also knew that he wouldn't give it to her unless she was at least a little prepaired.

Syveris sat on her couch, laying back and thinking on the events until now. She smiled, knowing that her mentor had been planning this gift for some time. He had listed her everything she needed to buy to make a safe nest, and had also lent her a book on how to care for the egg. She would have to return the book once she finished reading it, since it was from a friend of her mentor, probably the same one from whom he got the egg, but she could always write things down somewhere. The Avora scowled, wanting to hit herself in the head for forgetting to it while she still in the market. Maybe she should go shopping again sometime soon, for a good notebook. And this time, she would also make sure to take note of everything she needed.

Syveris closed her eyes for a moment, remembering the emotion she had felt when Virat handed her a crate with an egg inside. She had already known what her birthday present was, but she still couldn't even find the words to thank her mentor. He had said that she owned him something, and that he would think of what later, but Syveris was happy all the same. She would have never expected it, and yet, now she would raise a falcon. A bird. Her heart was beating fast, and her excitement was just as big as when she had been accepted as a glassworker. Or when she had seen the Edge of the World for the first time.

Chuckling at herself, the Avora opened the book, skipping the introduction and going right to the first chapter. She would read everything later, with more calm, but she had already read the introduction of the book and the second chapter. Now, she needed to find out how to build a safe nest and focus on that.

Syveris yawned. She had finally ended the chapter, and had a good idea about how to build a relatively safe nest. Besides, she knew what the egg needed to develop, so it wouldn't be so hard, would it? Getting up and stretching, Syveris took of her waistband, putting them on the couch, before taking the crate with an egg and placing it carefully on her bed. Then, she pushed the table in the center to the right corner of the room. If the crate was close to walls, the heating system would also help to keep the egg warm.

Taking the crate she had bought, after the shopkeeper had told her again and again that it was very clean, she placed it on top of the table, close to the wall, before covering the bottom with hay. Syveris took the blanket, a big and warm one, folding and twisting it until she was able to create a bed for the egg. She eyed her work, adjusting the blanket in the crate until she was satisfied. Then, she took Virat's crate and carefully took the egg, placing it in the middle of the blanket bed, before grabbing the small water recipient and also adjusting it inside the crate, but far enough from the egg, so it wouldn't get it wet. The last thing was to lit the oil lamp, and place it close to the crate, but not close enough that it would be too hot.

She found it was good, and, to her understanding, it did had all the elements that an egg should have to be able to hatch: humidity, heat, and cleanness. Syveris had found a Chiet willing to clean the table more throughtouly than normal, but, from now on, she would do the cleaning. Daily. It was a little discouraging, since she really hated to clean, but it was something necessary, and she would do it, daily, and very carefully.

But no matter how much she tried to tell herself everything would be fine, she was still worried that the egg wouldn't hatch, or it would hatch too soon or too late. She wasn't very sure about what to do in this situation, so she probably should ask someone in the Aviary, but the Avora was still anxious about everything. It was hard to keep herself calm, but there was nothing that she could do besides do her best, and wait for whatever it ended up happening.

It was probably best for her to sleep now, since she was really tired, but the Avora couldn't even think about it. Doing the nest had raised all the anxiety she had felt when Virat had given her the egg, as she was afraid she wouldn't be able to take care of the hatchling. Sighing, she threw herself in the couch, taking the book again and wondering if she should read it a little. Probably. Maybe it would help her anxiety to go down, so she could actually sleep.

Syveris opened the book, promising herself she would go to the Aviary on the next day, to at least feel more at easy, ask some questions, anything. It wouldn't do any bad, and it would certainly make her feel more at ease.

Shaking her head and trying to relax, at least a little, she opened the book from where she had left, reading the words with care, to be able to completely understand what it was written.

... Birds' hatchlings can be divided into two big groups: those who are able to move around soon after hatching and those who are not. Birds of prey, such as falcons and eagles, fall on the second category. The hatchling characteristics are the following: they hatch with their eyes closed, have little down feathers, are incapable of leaving the nest and must be fed by the parents.

This means that a hatchling will be sensitive to heat and cold, due to their thin and scarce layer of feathers, that will begin to grow in the first few days after the egg hatches, and will be able to stand the heat and the cold after seven days, more or less. Since the hatchlings have weak legs, they will move around by crawling, but that does not mean trouble. The closed eyes will open after a couple of days.

Syveris began to hum a soft tone, thinking. It was a good thing that was explained. She highly doubted she would have been able to keep calm if she had seen the hatchling crawling around, not able to stand up. Well, there was probably a lot more of research she should do not to panic if she saw something weird for her, but normal for the birds.

After around forty days, the bird will become a fledgling, and will be able to leave the nest, although it may take more twenty days until they become fully independent from their parents.

The Avora yawned again, her eyes feeling heavy. She closed the book, carefully placing it on top of the table. She was tired. Really, really tired. Besides, she would have to get up in the morning, so it would probably be best if she just went to bed now.

Syveris wondered if she should really go to bed. Her couch was comfortable enough for her, and she was tired. It wouldn't be bad to sleep at the couch just one day, would it? Yawning once again, she adjusted herself to be more comfortable, closing her eyes and falling asleep.
